Roden and Revell Albatros D.III built simultaneously. I used the Roden kit as a guide for improving the Revell kit.
-
1st the Revell kit.
1. I thinned all struts, Seat from Blackbird models, Seatbelts from Eduard. The rest of the cockpit was scratch built.
2. Added some detail to the Revell engine. Wheels extra form the Roden D.II kit. Upper wing radiator scratch built on the lower side.
3. Sanded the trailing edges and adjusted the top wing cut out
4 Kit was from 1964. Roden decals were used.

These projects were started many months ago. So the tire color is wrong. I wish I would have changed the spinner. I simply forgot until it was too late. I also should have sanded the trailing edges and wing ribs a bit more. This was not a bad kit for 1964.

The Roden kit:
1. Again the tire color is wrong. I decided to paint the fuselage black even though it is possibly dark purple. Overall this was not a bad kit but one must sand and fit a bit.

More photos.
I used Misterkit paints. My attempt at wood grain was a light beige acrylic paint base followed by an oil sand color. I enjoyed building the Revell kit as I have memories of building it 50 years ago.

Great models and their finishes really make them look like a larger scale. The wood grain is very effective for the small scale and the rigging as well. Nicely done, and I hope we'll see more! As for the black tires, write it off to "scale effect"! ;)
Cheers,

I also used after market machine guns (aeroclub) on the Revell kit. Windshields from extra acetate laying around. Soon I will finish a Revell SE5a and a Roden SE5a.

Thank you for the nice comment. I hope to get faster at this in the future.
-
Great project, really making something out of old kits :)
And I always have thought the D.III was better looking than the D.V.
Good luck with the double rigging on the SE.5 in 1:72 :)

Both of your Albatros Models are Beautiful. I really am impressed with what you have done with the Revelle kit!

Congratulations on both your builds, you should be proud.

The Revell kit may be old but it can still be made into a good model - as your photographs prove. Two lovely builds - never mind about the tyre colour - the models are first class regardless.

Many compliments for the double build!
Specially for the Revell kit, not simple to build obtaining a true replica!
Two little jewels!

Thank you for all the nice comments. I am now in the middle of the challenging Roden Fokker D.VII. Wish me luck!
