Here is the Le Rhone large scale engine that I built quickly as a test piece for a variety of metal paints. The cylinders and push rods are Humbrol metalcote polished steel, handbrushed on. The front plate is rattle can polished aluminium metalcote. Manifolds are Mr Metal copper and some of the components at the rear are Mr Metal Brass. The shaft and inner components are Mr Metal chrome silver.
My conclusions are that I must have a dodgy can of polished aluminium, the look here is of cast metal. The Mr Metal works very well on the curved and tubular components, not so well on the flatter areas, but this was all hand brushed. This paint will undoubtedly work better air brushed.
I did not go to town with tidying up the kit, such as the join between the cylinder halves, the seams around the spark plugs etc.
One more out of the stash!

What a beautiful looking engine, you have done a superb job with the colour choices and the paint application looks very good, extremely well done Ian. Did the kit instructions give you a colour guide?

I'll second what Des has written Ian. The colour contrasts look very good.

I'm convinced!

Nice one, Ian. Very realistic looking Le Rhone.

Excellent work Ian, great job. Your 'test' worked extremely well ;)
Lovely colour.

Just two days ago, I've got such engine made by Vector in 32 scale and I would like to put it to my Fokker Dr.1.
Here I can see how is looking very good made engine.

Thank you for the comments folks :)

There are colour callouts on the instructions but nearly all are for mixes, say copper with silver for the manifolds, silver with a bit of gold for the bits I did in brass, etc. I used a bit of artistic licence to avoid having to mix the paints.
The stand can be painted according to taste - I chose red to provide contrast to the engine.

Really great Ian! What is the small blue/grey object on the crank shaft just forward of the intake pipes? (Apologies for not knowing as much as I should about rotaries. I'm unfamiliar with that object.)

Hello Ian !
Klasse look !
The Hasegawa 1/8 engines are nice kits; built one myself (the Camel engine).
The are also a nice add to a photo of aircraft in smaller gauges.

Hi Warren, I have no idea what this is - also the instruction sheet is mostly in Japanese and the only identifying details are the part numbers and colour codes.

Nice work Ian.
;) Now you just might have found me a stocking filler for Xmas if SWMBO gives me chance (WNW release failing of course...)

Hello Ian !
I did my 1:8 Sopwith engine to test out the metal colours (see modeler of the month for a frame).
The 1/8 engines are very nice kits and fit well with the 1/32 or other gauges in a show-case!
I recommend them to all forum members.

Ian,
How in the world did I miss this wonderful gem? Outstanding project my old friend. Excellent build and painting. Add alittle oil and sluge and the Le Rhone would look like she's just been pulled for an overhaul. Absolutely beautifully done.

Thank you folks, much appreciated :)
I chose not to weather this model as it was primarily an experimental piece for use of various metal paints. Some of my painting was more successful than others, but I learned a few lessons here. Overall I was pleased with the outcome, but oh boy this would make for a huge aircraft if completed!

I believe that the blue\gray object is a slide type carburetor.
