After a very long enforced period away from the bench due to life's interesting twists and turns, I have managed to get myself organised to attempt this build in honour of Des. I hope that I can produce a worthy build and on time, as my build pace is glacial to say the least ( 4 builds in 5 years :o ).
As of this time I am gathering the reference material and after market accessories required and am still to determine which aircraft to depict.
Photos to follow if I can find a reliable and suitable photo host, any ideas folks as I find photobucket so frustratingly slow with all the ads.
I would also at this time like to thank Des for his inspiration and encouragement throughout.

We seem to be in the same situation. Got the kit etc just figuring pic posting etc

That's good to know Steve, hoping to have everything gathered together this week , then its back to the bench, after blowing off the cobwebs ::).

I always enjoy a good Fokker DR1 build. I am Looking forward to yours very much! I still have 2 to build so I am sure I will learn a few things from your work.

Gilly,
I switched to Imgur during the photo Bucket debacle as well and highly recommend it. It's reliable, fast, and very easy to use.
Cheers,

Thank you for the encouraging comments RagIII and the heads up regarding hosting sites , all very much appreciated folks. I will investigate the alternatives to Photobucket as although I have managed to get into it after some messing it still has the speed of a striking slug :'(, however for today here is the kit from the stash and a few goodies which postie brought today. Albatros Publications for reference, Eduard PE and stunning Decals from Rich at Aviattic ;D

And a couple more references from the office bookshelf :D

Now just to decide upon the subject ::)

Nice collection of stuff for the kit! Looking forward to the build!

Hope I can pull it off :o

Excellent choice!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks Bud, that is much appreciated.
Baumer's 204/17 will be a build of many firsts for me ??? , my first 1/32 , my first triplane, :o , my first Roden build, my first use of extensive decals in such a scale and my first use of Montex paint masks, what could possibly go wrong ::) ::) ::)
-
Very nice one, looking forward to your build.
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Thank you Giuseppe , I am looking forward to starting the build in the next few days :), just a little bit more gathering to do and its prepping time :)
-
Outstanding choice of scheme. Just enough color to break it up and make it really interesting.
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick, that's the conclusion I came to after much deliberating :-\
-
If you're going to use Aviattic's decals for all the linen surfaces, you will probably have problems when you use the Montex masks. You will need to de-tack the vinyl masks as much as possible to keep the Aviattic decals from pulling up when removing the masks.

Thanks for the heads up on that Bill, I may have to review the cunning plan already. Very much appreciated thank you.

There's an awful lot of cleaning up to be done on this old girl :o . I have made my return to the bench after over a year :-[ and had a good six hours there today, yet it doesn't look as though I have achieved much except wear my fingerprints away with scraping, filing and sanding.
(https://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/Gillyf45/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0356_zpshgn8j3kq.jpg) (https://s918.photobucket.com/user/Gillyf45/media/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0356_zpshgn8j3kq.jpg.html)
its good to be back though and enjoying every minute :)

My late barber was used to say soaping is half shaving, tha same applies to cleaning parts when assembling a model. There visibly was a lot of work here. Waiting for updates.

The kit does take some clean up and you have done an excellent job. Your work to date is certainly further along than mine ::)

This is looking good and significant progress! Enjoy! Marc

Hi Gilly,
Good choice.
I built the Roden DR.1 for a Jasta 2 aircraft.
If you're interested, the PDF build log is on my site (link below) in Gallery 1 - double click the PDF icon to read or download.
It has some good research and mods etc that you might find of interest,
Mike

Thank you for your kind comments Giuseppe,Rick and Marc, they are much appreciated. I very much like the shaving analogy Giuseppe :D :D it is so true.
More preparing parts last night ??? but coming along well at the moment.
-
Thank you so much for the link to your DR. 1 build Mike, it is very much appreciated and will be invaluable. What an amazing site you have there too, with outstanding builds. Thanks I shall visit regularly ;D

Not much progress this week folks :-
Eduard PE frame fitted into fuselage sides and engine assembled

Ignition Wires attached by drilling into the back plate and then using wire strands wrapped around the spark plugs with a dash of CA

Some Priming Airbrushed using Humbrol No1 acrylic primer
(http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/Gillyf45/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0365_zpszzyzfswu.jpg) (http://s918.photobucket.com/user/Gillyf45/media/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0365_zpszzyzfswu.jpg.html)
A bit more airbrushing using a German dope linen I acquired years ago and have never used before, still debating on this, it took me an age to get the right consistency and pressure for this and then the airbrush died on me, which may have been the reason I was struggling :-\ also prior to airbrush failure I manage to lay a coat of gunmetal onto some parts.

I am undecided on the Linen colour , any thoughts folks?
-
I like the engine and plugs/plug wires. As for the linen I usually use a light greyish beige but others may have different opinions 8) All is looking great so far.
RAGIII
-
Linen has a pleasant, warm tone, I think all the tonal range between off white and light brown can do.
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Thank you RAGIII & Giuseppe for your kind comments, I will ponder and work on the linen and see what I can do, some careful weathering and toning down may help. I still have much brush work to do on the engine to get it to an acceptable standard but I have plenty of time to brush now whilst I obtain a replacement airbrush or work some magic on the old one :-\
-
Great start!!
Steve
-
Not a great deal achieved since my last update folks :-[
I resprayed the linen with a mix of the original German dope linen , flat white and light grey and am reasonably happy with the outcome. Wood graining with oils and a Tamiya clear yellow seal.
(https://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/Gillyf45/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0387_zpspriow0rc.jpg) (https://s918.photobucket.com/user/Gillyf45/media/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0387_zpspriow0rc.jpg.html)
Engine still ongoing but getting to the oiling and staining stage.
(http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/Gillyf45/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0385_zpstdtz3b5i.jpg) (http://s918.photobucket.com/user/Gillyf45/media/Roden%20Fokker%20DR1/IMG_0385_zpstdtz3b5i.jpg.html)
Slow progress I am afraid :(

That's all for now folks
-
I really like your wood tones :)
Terri
-
Thanks Terri

Good stufffs Gilly, the card board really works well for holding parts doesn't it.
Ryan
-
Engine and wood panels are looking great!
RAGIII
-
Great work!! Can you explain how to use the Tam clear colours. Spray? Thin with Tam thinner? Brush? I have always failed with it.
Steve
-
Thanks for those kind comments folks, all very much appreciated and Ryan thanks for that top tip on the cardboard, Keep those tips a rolling in :D
Regarding the Tamiya clear colours Steve, I brush it but I do use Tamiya thinners and work as quickly as possible before it starts to become tacky, I too have struggled with this before and things haven't gone well but I was lucky this time.
