Hello all,

Following on from my idea about a model in flight encased in resin:

My first attempt will be a Flying Fokker. Or to be more precise, the 1/72 Eduard Fokker Dr.1 (although I will experiment on something old first). As it’s in flight I would need a pilot of course, so I’ve got a couple of very nice WW1 pilots from PJ Productions. These really are super for scale. The next problem will be a spinning prop - happy to listen to ideas on this?

Not sure of the scheme yet, the Eduard decal sheet gives some lovely options! I wouldn’t normally be drawn to the obvious Red Baron one, but it may look good in resin?

Cut clear plastic subtle airbrushing and a blured terrain print worked for this display:

A wooden prop offers some unique challenges , I did about 7 diff props before deciding on this method (and still would do it diff today ) . I also researched the idea as well and still chose this method.

 I would add more dynamic motion to the props by curving the blades and making the end like a 'whipsaw' with a tapered end. But thinking about this 2 things come to mind; the Tempest is moving at 400 mph and is obviously a much diff aircraft.
 This is an effective method as I watched at shows guys doing double takes thinking the prop is spinning!
I'll think about the diff here , wooden prop , slower speed. Still concerned about the heat generated , how will that affect rigging , and thin clear prop blades, hmmmmm....

Yes Steve, it may not work, but I am at least going to try!

I think you’re right about a very thin clear plastic prop melting with the resin curing. I’m going to speak to some resin companies about how best to go about it - but they’re all shut for Xmas at the moment..

But feel free to keep the ideas coming!

I will watch this with interest. At 1:72 Manfred looks incredible. Not sure how he'll feel about being encased in resin... 8)

Great attention to detail, but since the engine is a rotary it will be spinning along with the prop. . .

Bear in mind the ‘prop’ part isn’t stuck down yet to the disc.


In another corner of my workbench (kitchen) I’ve started on the resin. I’ve filled up the interior to prevent air bubbles in the final casting. Little bit over an ooze out, but I don’t think that will be a problem once encased in resin. It took a fair time to fill - by drip feeding with the pipette - as it finds its way around the nooks and crannies. It takes 24-48 hrs to set. The long setting time reduces the heat produced in curing - so I’m (reasonably) confident it won’t melt...

The resin is a slow curing epoxy.. and very expensive!  :P

    I like your new approach to the prop Guy, looks much more realistic and "subtle' compared to the earlier one.

Coming along nicely. Just out of curiosity did you perhaps check some scrap plastic painted and decaled for adverse reactions?

I was told it should be ok.. so no, I didn’t. But it’s all experimental - I expect there to be some cock ups! I plan on doing bigger & better aerial dioramas. This one is very much a learning experience.

Ps do you reckon a prop painted on the disc would be better than one stick on as I’ve done?

I'd immerse your prototype props in a glass of water to see what they will look like once encased in the resin medium. The transparent bits may partially or completely disappear - might look different from "naked" appearance. Hopefully, even better!
