Hello All,
This was on sale in my local hobby shop £12! I've been toying with trying one for a bit and at that price I couldn't resist. A toss up between the Fokker & the Spad - I think the weird strut fixings on the Spad tipped the balance.
I'm definitely a high tech kit man so this one will be a challenge, but the kit looks solid despite its age (60!!!)
I see Edgar on CSM has a photo etch sheet and a resin engine.. any other indispensable items that you could recommend?
Replacing the jacketed machine guns is a must - any ideas?
Thanks for looking
Guy

"I also need a prop!"
Time to start carving a wood one of your own, Guy. With your demonstrated skills it should be a breeze! I believe you'll enjoy the challenge of a vintage Kit, gets one back to the basics and is a refreshing break.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Old memories from my childhood coming back on this one, good choice Guy. CSM also has alternate decals and prop hubs. Looking forward to your progress.
-
I too remember building this more years ago than I care to mention………
I also agree with Lance - carving a prop from wood should not present any real problems for you and it would look so much better than plastic. In this scale lamination should also be straightforward(!) I am certain that this will be turned into another gem on your table.
Stephen.

Can I make a suggestion?:
any other indispensable items that you could recommend?
As you have made a 'huge' investment in this, and you are a self-confessed high-tech kit builder, have a go without buying AM stuff
I bet you can get by without most of it, and its fun
Richard
-
Thanks Chaps,
That's a nice idea, but I'm afraid it's too late Richard.. I just tracked down the Tom's Modelworks PE German Gun set #400.
If there was one thing I couldn't make it would be the guns... ::)
Guy

OK, I confess. I may enjoy scratchbuilding, some parts really deserve a more complicated approach. Guns are one such area, and there are so many good engines around that scratchbuilding one of the common ones doesn't seem worthwhile
Tom's Modelworks stuff is great, and damn close to scratchbuilding...
Richard
-
An oldie but a goodie, I will be following your build closely Guy, with your expertise it will turn out to be a real gem.
Des.

Almost done... ;D

Well, maybe not - just test fitting the major components. I'm surprisingly impressed by the overall fit - it seems really rather good! The mouldings are better than I was expecting too. I think with an overall sand the slightly overdone surface detail will look not too bad at all. The trailing edge on the elevators is razor sharp!
Pretty good so far. The obvious miss is the cockpit framework - will be addressing that next I guess.
Guy
-
Outstanding choice for building a vintage kit I am looking forward to what you do with this one!
RAGIII
-
Still a grand 'ol dame, TOM'S MODELWORKS for the Photo-etch Interior is the preferred. The CSM one is the last that was done BEFORE Edgar and Crew took over, ( thus the sale price as I believe he is going to redo that sheet) their new 1/28 engines are the best ! And if you don't want to carve your own CSM props are equal to the engines ( if there are any left )
Ed
-
Will you be attacking the 'Sawtooth' with vigour and gusto?
vB :D
-
Thanks Rick,
Bob, only inasmuch as a light sand down... what else would you suggest?
Guy
-
Too late!
Sanded down the wings and quite pleased - I've only sanded fore and aft and laterally and it gives the generic appearance of canvas (with a little imagination :) )
Tried a coat of primer on one wing and looks ok I think - it's not quite as pronounced as the photo shows as I gave the primer a gentle rub too which has accentuated the highlights. Looks fairly subtle in the flesh.

I seem to be racing along with this...
Great fun! I think I'm hooked on larger scale (please mr Wingnuts 8) ) can you imagine a WW's 1/24th Scale Be2c?!
Sanded off all the moulded on detail and am replacing with a mix of wood veneer, plastic strip, rod and brass tubing. I'd like to get Edgar's CSM instruments if nothing else - I suppose I could use Wingnut decals but they're going to look too small in this scale I reckon.

Subtlety is the name of the game.
Looking good, Guy! ;)
vB

That's looking really nice what you are doing! I am still thinking about using an 1/28 Revell Tripe to cut into pieces as background for my 75mm MvR(Vampire) figure, or buying a 1:24 Merit kit which is much more expensive. But I think I'll go with the old Revell now, seeing the pics of your progress.
Borsos
-
Nice, very nice!!!!
-
Thanks Borsos, Juan & Bob :)
The main framework is done - jus some details to add - engine control quadrant and instruments and some bits & bobs. But a very enjoyable day messing about with scraps to make up detail - I think this is more fun than a posh kit!

Ooh, this is looking very good, Guy! It always was a quite buildable kit! I do like your additions to the interior, I will be taking notes! Regards, Marc
-
Guy, it is very encouraging to see what an experienced modeler could do with such an old and basic kit.
Manni
-
Very nice indeed Guy, this is turning into a real gem.
Des.

You re certainly making a great improvement over what comes in the box. Enjoy the build!
RAGIII
-
I remember building this very may years ago - but some of the parts seem to have been missing on reflection!! Your extra cockpit details are stunning - wonderful piece of scratch building there. A complete scratch build next?
Stephen.
-
Thank you all!
Just about finished the cockpit I think. Need to look at an ammunition box but it's all fairly generic tbh - just having fun making bits here and there. The seat belts came out of the spares box - 1/32 but look fine to me - as does the couple of instrument decals from Wingnuts.
Will have a look at the engine next...

Great looking interior, Guy.

Outstanding work on the innards, Guy! She's shaping up beautifully!

You are doing absolute wonders with this old classic, Guy. She's already a beauty, and I'm anticipating another winner from your talented efforts. 8)
Cheers,

Thanks chaps!
I've got the Fuse together and test fitting the wings and struts and I'm astounded by the fit! All clicks together without the merest hint of a gap... I'm sure someone will tell me it's the wrong dimensions here and there but looks good!
Amazing

Hi Guy, looking good, have fun with this journey down memory lane and don't mind if someone points out some inaccuracy with the kit. Looks darn good as you progress, press on. ;D
-
Thanks juan,
Yes, probably best I don't know ::) although I have been told the ailerons are wrong (I can live with that) and the struts don't align - but they do seem to on my kit? Unless I'm missing something.
But yes, meant to be a fun, fairly quick build rather than a year long pursuit of perfection!
Guy
-
It actually looks good! This is a very nice interior. Great to hear about the fitting of this grandfather kit.
Borsos
-
Thanks Borsos ;)
Finally got the first round of painting done. Can anyone guess the Jasta? :D
I haven't tried the Fokker streaking before. Any top tips welcome. I've kicked off with a light khaki-olive. This was using the MRP paints from the Camel build - PC10 lightened with Linen. I can't praise these paints enough - beautiful to spray! The underside blue was back to Tamiya and noticeably not as nice!
The initial plan will be to use artist's oils to do the streaking - maybe in 2 colours in 2 separate sittings? A lighter and darker shade of Olive? Is there any brown in it? There seems to be looking at streaking decals?
I haven't decided on the final aircraft, just the Jasta. The markings will have to be masked & sprayed so it won't be one of the super fancy schemes.
Any input welcome.
Guy
Ps I have a pic to post but have been hijacked by Photobucket - it was useless anyway. But pi**ed off every thread I've done is now been ransomed... shocking.

Aha! Success ;)
Thanks to Des and Postimage

All this fun for, what, under £30?
Richard

Outstanding prep work and construction! As for the streaking try looking at the Hints and Tips section under Fokker Streaking show us your Method. Several good Ideas there in addition to mine.
RAGIII
-
Yes Richard,
The kit was £12 and about a fiver for the PE guns so under £20!
Thanks Rick, didn't think to look there! Unfortunately, too late. I went ahead anyway, and quite pleased with the results (ish).
I'll post some pics later...

"Can anyone guess the Jasta? :D "
Got to be Jasta 19?
You are certainly doing wonders with this old Kit.
Cheers,
Lance

Well done Lance, spot on ;)
Guy
-
Wow Guy, this is turning out to be a real head turner. ;D
-
simply amazing! great streaking!
Borsos
-
You have done a great job with the Streaking Guy, well done.
Des.
-
Yes, probably best I don't know ::) although I have been told (...) the struts don't align - but they do seem to on my kit? Unless I'm missing something.
I'm waiting on a replacement gear strut for mine, but the wings all aligned no problem! Kit was bought new in 2007.
I love your streaking and Jasta choice Guy, it looks fantastic!
-
Gorgeous streaking, Guy! Among the best I've seen.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks Juan, Des, Borsos & Bud!
And also thanks KiwiZac... I've seen pictures of completed models with the struts slightly out of line (with the top and bottom strut) when viewed from side on, and Dave (in Dubai) told me he had to modify his). But mine do seem to be ok- yet I really don't think Revell have changed the moulds? Bit of a mystery...
Just waiting for the streaking to properly dry before sealing as I'll have to mask up a lot of the surface for the markings.
Guy
-
Outstanding streaking, the choise of the colours is great.
Manni
-
And also thanks KiwiZac... I've seen pictures of completed models with the struts slightly out of line (with the top and bottom strut) when viewed from side on
Ah, I see. I have noticed my top wing has a higher angle of incidence but can live with it, hadn't paid attention to the wing struts. I'll take a look at mine and see if I've got the same thing going on. Mine's just a fun build too/stash clearer so I'm not too worried.
-
Nice model of a famous original, which today had its first flight a century ago! :)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hey, well spotted frank! Happy birthday Driedecker!

Got to agree with the others re the streaking effect. That is something to be proud of - and to repeat!
Stephen.

The streaking looks very convincing, well done!
Cheers

Thanks all,
And HB to the Tripehound.
While waiting for the drying I've been fiddling with an unusual beast for me - a 4 engined behometh Japanese seaplane in 1/72 from the 60's ... I never do 1/72 or Japanese aircraft or old kits so I don't know what I was thinking of but bought on impulse in my local model shop and it's great fun!
But I will get back to the Tripe shortly - around a run of trips away at work.
Guy
-
What's going on - you've posted and I didn't get my latest fix on this project!
How dare you go and build aeroplanes just for fun - what do you think this is, a hobby???
;D
Richard
Where are the pictures of this 1/72 Japanese abomination, I bet they are worth seeing
-
;D
Sorry Richard, bad form I know. I will post a mini log of the random abomination in the time to relax section I guess at some point.
But the Tripes calling me, so will post an update soon.

It's quite lovely, Guy! And really some of the most appealing and real looking streaking I have seen, quite authentic! Talk about rejuvenation of an old kit... Superb! Marc

Proof there is plenty of life left in the ol' 28th girl!
Ed

That is super streaking and the rest of the markings are superbly done. I am struggling to remember that this is the old Revell offering!
