Well I promised this as a dual build a couple of years ago. It has taken me a while to get the PE and other stuff I felt I needed to do the build. So here is the HK Meteor under way. Interior updated with Eduard PE. The fuselage glued together, filled and sanded. I will be using Pheons Excellent decals for 56 Squadron of course!

I have finished the interior other than painting the control column. I have assembled the fuselage halves and filled, sanded, and filled again. Now I think I have a smooth finish on the seams. Next up deciding if the $40.00 Engine Nacelle correction I purchased is within my skill level to add :-\

Nice one Rick!
It keeps you sane to have the odd distraction. I was always tempted by this kit so will look forward to seeing what you do with it...

Thanks for the encouragement Guy! I am now deciding if I have the courage/ skill to use the Fischer resin engine Nacelles that I paid $40.00 to acquire :-\ If I screw up the cuts It will pretty much be the end. On the other hand Most Humans don't see the incorrect shape in the Nacelles to begin with 8)

Taking a break with a change of subjects is a smart move, Rick. The F4B4 "Yellow Wing" I recently did proved enjoyable and a nice change, "keeps the juices flowing"!
The Meteor looks great, I've heard a lot about this Kit and it should prove a real show stopper under your talented efforts. Looking forward to following your progress in getting this 56 Sqn beauty "High into the Empty Blue"!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Lance. I have felt I needed a change for a while and am enjoying the difference!

I am sure of two things:
1. you will not screw it up in the first place;
2. in the extremely unlikely event that you do nobody will notice as you have written.
Conclusion: go ahead and enjoy yourself and then show us the result so that we can enjoy it too.

Rick,
That's some serious (and very scary looking) cutting there. Nice to see you back at the Building Station and particularly enjoying yourself. A change indeed appears as good as a rest, keep at it!

The front office looks very good.

Thanks for the comments guys! I have attached the Fischer Models corrected Nacelles. My cuts weren't quite as precise as I had hoped they were :( I have filled and when the putty is dry I will smooth everything out. I also attached a simple Plastruct tube sealed with a bit of sheet plastic on the jet exhaust to keep from being able to see into the Empty Void of the engine compartment!

Although I have no idea what this item is — there are not enough wings, there’s no prop, so it cannot be an airplane... maybe an UFO? — it is looking cool. My grandma once had a quite similar device for her pills. It had a clock in it that remembered her to take them at the correct time. Hm, maybe it’s such a thing, but howewer, you are doing a great job in assembling it!

Thanks T, I appreciate you dropping by! As for the Main color I am still open for suggestions. Rowan and other sources say the Meteor Mk4 was painted High Speed Silver. There are a couple of references I have that mention NMF. Looking at photos I tend to think the High Speed Silver is correct. It will be challenging in that they were WELL Maintained so not a lot of room for weathering.

Yeah, it would be interesting to finish a Meatbox in overall black 8) Thanks for dropping in Ken!

That looks really great, Rick! I have the kit in my stash too, and had planned on converting it to a T.7 trainer. Unfortunately I put off buying Fisher's T.7 conversion for too long, and now they're gone :(
Alclad makes an RAF High Speed Silver paint. I used it on my 1/48 Airfix F.8 build in Airfix Model World May 2016, and as the Brits say, it really looks the part.

Thanks Peter! Your Meteor does "Look the Part" for sure. It is a shame that the Fire damaged so Many peoples lives. The last I heard Fisher was trying to rebuild his business. People were actually sending him items he had mastered so he could re make the molds. I don't know how successful this was.

Thanks, Rick! Hopefully Paul can get back on his feet again. I'm not sure how well re-mastering from cast parts will work, since the master has to be oversize to allow for the resin shrinking. Luckily I did grab his 1/32 Bell X-1A/B while it was still available, right after I saw the real X-1B at the USAF Museum.

So I have given the Meteor it's first coat of Silver Lacquer, AKA High Speed Silver. I ended up using Model Master Aluminum Enamel. Next I will vary a few panels, then weather( very lightly).

Thanks Robin...I think 8) It does look a bit Less Aluminum in the photo vs real life. I have some Testors chrome Silver to apply next and then something I might try is a Valejo Metal Medium paint which looks semi clear in the bottle but looks silver when painted. Lots of experimenting to do :o

I know...and even F-16 assembly at the Ypenburg Fokker factory (sadly closed now :-\)
My brother still works with Fokker, but no more planes build. Now only modifications on existing planes...mainly Fokker 50 and Fokker 100, but also oldies still flying, like the Fellowship and even the Friendship. Fokker is a fading national pride though. :(
Obviously very much alive and kicking in my family. My all time favorite Fokker is the D.XXI. :)

My sincere apologies Rick for not seeing this before: I do not normally lurk in this area!

Rick,
Lovely work as per usual 8)
Have you seen the metallic range from Mission Models? From their demo on Youtube they look the part.
I will be investing in a few of their range in the new year. If the rest of their colours are anything like their black paint, I will be one happy bunny indeed.
Keep up the good fight!
von B ;)

That looks fine, Rick. Another slightly different shade on some panels will really set it off!

Thanks Ken. I Normally have My painting plan totally figured out at this point. That isn't the case with this one. Being a "Painted" finish on the real birds I am hesitant to paint panels in different shades. I am afraid it will end up looking like a "Failed" attempt at a NMF. Photos show a pretty even Monotone finish on the Meteor, Most are also Very clean! Therefore I admit to being open for suggestions on this one!
RAGIII

Since the High Speed Silver was paint, you should weather it the way you would weather any other paint scheme. They were kept very clean, so for mine I used a panel wash only around the opening/removable panels and hatches, and left the rest of the airframe pristine.
In your larger scale, though, some subtle repainting with a slightly different silver color around fasteners and removable panel edges might give a good effect, as well as some scuffing where the pilot and ground crew step. I'd expect that the gun panels and large engine hatches would get the most wear and tear.
Peter
-
I didn't realize it was paint and not the metal skin.

Thanks for the very good suggestions Peter! I have spent days looking at Google Images of Models and Actual Meteor Photos. Final decision will be close to your suggestions. Really not much room if one wants to Model a relatively accurate scheme. Now one could go for the Artistic thing and shadow highlight etc, but I think I will Not 8)

Well I have suffered a setback! Started to apply the Pheon 56 squadron Decals and they were VERY BRITTLE. I have never encountered this issue with Pheon before so must assume that it was related to how long I had the decals( about 4 years). I managed to get the left side markings applied but the one on the right fractured into multiple pieces. Photos taken before removal. The result is this one is sidelined until I can order a replacement set. I am really afraid to try any of the other markings like stencils and roundels so will just save up for a New Set. SIDELINED for now!

Ow...that sucks. :(
When kept sealed in their bag under normal circumstances....4 years shouldn't be a problem.
I use decals much older without problems. An unlucky sheet I guess.
Without reading, I would have said: "nicely weathered markings!" :)
Best of luck Rick.

Sorry to hear about the decals >:(! You could try a coat of Micro Scale Decal Film to the decals before you wet them. I’ve had good luck with that to stabilize old decals. Try it with a decal you won’t use for this Meteor, on a scrap model.

Thanks Richard. Yeah, a real bummer for the Mojo but I think I will go to the Sabre Mk. 6 as a back up build until I can order the decals.
Maybe even something WW1 back on the bench. Taking today to Drink some good Beer( Porter) and then decide ;D

Bad luck Rick: I sincerely hope that you can get some replacements soon as this is a stunning model.
As for the next one, I would not recommend one with a hole in the back, more like one with a spare wing and fan at the front. You KNOW how you miss the rigging....

Good to read that your replacements are on their way. This aircraft model really does look good - even for one who normally likes them to have at least one spare wing....
Stephen.

Thanks Stephen, as always I appreciate you looking in ! Just for the record, There was No CHARGE from Rowan/Pheon for the replacement Decal!
RAGIII

Well this might be the Weakest update I have ever done :o All I have accomplished is painting the canopy frames. Sort of waiting on Rowans generous replacement of the markings I destroyed 8)

I have some pictures for you
The nosewheels are easy to photograph, the main undercarriage isn't easy at all and I failed on intakes as all the aeroplanes have protection bungs. I do have a picture of the front of an engine though, I'm wondering how much of that can be seen up the pipe

Thanks for the Photos Richard, Greatly appreciated ! As for what can be seen down those intakes...Not Much and the kit supplied fake front works well 8)

I also found this:

While waiting for the replacement markings for the right side I have begun to apply stencils and other markings. I ended up having to paint the walkway stripes. Applied black, masked with Bobs Strippers, then sprayed silver. Fairly happy with the results 8)

That’s great customer support! You might want to test a piece that you don’t need, just to make sure there’s no recurrence of the shattering. Better safe than sorry!

I'm a bit late to the show here. Could you tell me what sized tubing you used for the exhaust? I have one of these partially done and have been thinking of getting back to it and finishing it. I need to figure out the exhausts though and your fix looks easy enough. Thanks in advance.

My simple solution worked out well. If you look up the pipe without using a flashlight all you see is a dark tube. With a flashlight a dark tube ending in a blanked off manner 8) I measured the tube and oddly it is @ 14 mm Outside diameter and @ 12 mm inside diameter. IHTH,

You are welcome. So a small update. The replacement decals worked as expected, no coating needed. The checks are now on both sides and most of the stencils applied. Again thanks to Rowan and Sabine for the OUTSTANDING Customer Support!

Thanks for your continued interest Robin! I am not quite done but shouls be by next week. I have parts spread all over My workbench for a JG71 Sabre Mk. 6 so that is where I will start. As for My usual habit of building two at once.....something WW1 is in order 8)

I am nearing the end of this build but I have encountered issues...of My own making. I was down to the point of weathering when I took this photo and noticed the right Nacelle had a sudden crack and depression not there previously. My thought is that I melted it while using a hair dryer on the wing roundels :-[ So filled and will sand out and touch up paint.

Oh dear Rick - this really does seem to have a jinx on it. However I am certain that you will put the problem right in no time and that we will be presented with the finishhed model shortly. At least I hope that we will!

Such a beautiful aircraft. Congratulations on such a fine result!
I hear that the HK kit even comes with a 1/144 version in the same box. That alone would make it very tempting for me. If only WNW would do the same! A fellow can dream at least. :P

Thanks for dropping in William..and for the kind comment. I really have become a Fan of the Meteor and wish someone would do an F8 in 1/32nd. I am even Tempted to get a few 1/48th kits, Tamiya and Airfix. Not sure yet but Maybe :-\ Finally, yes a 1/144th F4 was included. Very basic but nice outline. I have it assembled OOB and painted silver. No decals were included which I find strange and frustrating!
