This is a small diorama base I did for my Gotha WD7.I thought it might be of interest to show my way to achieve a quite realistic looking beach scene.
Ground work made with a mix of sand and white glue, over a styrofoam board .Jetsam is kitchen herbs, tobacco and modelrailroad scatter for the seaweed and algae.Painted with acrylics.

A sheet of clear plastic is cut to fit the bank and attached with clear acrylic caulk.

(http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/matzmodel/WD7/2-P1020134_zpsqib6ahj2.jpg) (http://s87.photobucket.com/user/matzmodel/media/WD7/2-P1020134_zpsqib6ahj2.jpg.html)

Thick acrylic gloss varnish tinted with a very small amount of green-grey ,applied thickly and left to dry.

When the clear coat has dried thoroughly(most important!) acrylic transparent caulk is applied and sculpted with a wet finger  or adequate tool.
Again, the base is put aside to dry,in this case it took about a week .

When the caulk has turned completely clear ,gloss varnish is applied generously and the waves are picked out with a small brush and gloss white. Details of the jetsam are painted with several greens and browns .

Fantastic, maybe Des can pin it at the "Hints and Tips/Questions about modeling"?

Is it possible to post a pictures of the materials used for recreating water? I read them in your post, but having a visual about them will be better!

best regards,
Sasho

Hi all, thanks a lot for your nice comments! Squiffy,I started exactly like you with a grass mat on the dining room table and hangar tents made of glue-drenched tissue ...that's about 15 years ago now and I'm still learning a lot with every new project I start.
I think your dioramas are pecfect as  displays for your nice models because you can rearrange everything for new sceneries.
Sasho,I used a 1mm thick plastic sheet,Revell aqua color gloss clear, and Acrylic thick material you get in every do-it-yourself market for small money.Don't use silicone, paint won't stick to it.You can see it on the top of the third photo. You could even use genuine Acrylic gloss varnish instead of revell aqua color if you want to do a larger dio ,savesw you lots of money.
Most important is to let each layer dry thoroughly until it 's clear,if it is still milky and you apply another layer it will stay like this forever.
You could also quit with the clear plastic sheet ,if you want bigger waves, and apply the acrylics to a sculpted and painted styrofoam board ,like I did here:

One hint to the colour of water:Do not paint it blue!

Great stuff Malaula. FWIW there was a recent issue of The Weathering Magazine devoted to water, with several interesting techniques demo'ed for creating realistic water...

Thanks for this Malaula, I'm definitely going to attempt a water base for one, if not both, of my WNW HB's soon, this will help a lot! Nice work, the colours are very realistic, as is the sculpting of the waves and ripples.
Cheers,
Lance

Here's another attempt I did some time ago, suitable for clear water, especially for use with smaller scales. All you need is a modelrailroad water sheet and some paint(in this case I used Dark blue and greens).Cut out the outlines of the objects on the water and seal with acrylic .Done!
