Thanks Bud
I think my Dr 1 comes near this. It was the 477 and DSA made one colour Picture.

  Martin,
Thank you very much for posting this my friend. Do have any information on the color of this Red (FS or otherwise)? From here the color does appear blood red. That being said I would that the samples age and grime could have much to do with looking blood red.

On the last Dr.I of the baron's I build I used Master Model Insig. Red. Never thought my chosen shade of red looked right at all.I even considered repainting it using MM's RLM-23 but didn't. Decided RLM-23 looked just awful.

Gregory, I remember this little gem from way, way back!  I always liked the red you chose.  Looked just bright enough without being garish.  And your streaking is perfect.  Glad you brought her back out.
Cheers,
Bud

Gregory, Martin, and Bud,

I think Gregorys' choice of red is well within the parameters. The Albatros Publication by A.E. Ferko has photos from Australia and Canada and neither appear as dark blood red as the one posted here. I know this subject has been discussed quite often for as many years as I can remember. I remember an article from a British magazine in the early 1970's that called fro "Letter Box" red. Perhaps one of our Forum members has a match?

Given all the variables of ageing, harsh sunlight, storage and taking into account whether you want to show your model as it would appear at midday or dusk on a bright or dull day, I'd suggest the modeller can pretty well choose any red they please. If you think of an oil painting before and after cleaning I think you can disregard what the 100year old fragments tell us today!
I think the most accurate depiction of the correct colour is Des's masthead. Choose whichever part of the background to "ww1aircraftmodels.com" that you prefer!

I completely agree, a lot can change in 100 years! I've come to interpret all of the available descriptions and the aged (and logically changed) samples available as being like the right side portion of the logo, dark but still a definite rich version of red showing through. JMHO; now, about PC10............ ;)

I restored some ww 1 aircraft and the colors in the zones exposed to the sunlight, dust, moisture and the like were much different from  the same color preserved below an overlapping panel or between two ribs.
Much, much different
The white areas on the balilla were brown where exposed while they were off white under the shielding panels....

I am inclined to believe that the red  Dr 1 was red, not that sort of NIVO :-)

I think this red is about the 477 and 425 DrI from von Richthofen.
DSA has posed a dark red for the this planes.

 Martin,
Is there a photograph of your Fok.477 posted here somewhere? I prefer the shade of red your DSA profile over my red.

I took this picture in the Royal Canadian Military Institute in Toronto a few years ago.

In the display cabinet upstairs is the seat, a section of the wing, a section of strut, and the fabric from the side of MvR's 425/17.

The colours seen in the photograph are as I remember.

Hope this helps?

Best wishes,

Dave :)

  Rick,
Many thanks my old friend. My old Aurora Dr.I may indeed be in the ball park as far as the red goes. One thing I'm certain of is no more airbrushed Fokker Streaking! .... Thanks for the link too.

i would go with dsa info on this, back on the aerodrome he mentioned he had an original piece of fabric from 425/17 and had it somehow color scanned to break it down to its core, i remember distinctly him saying there was a considerable amount of lamp black tone color within the sample. so his artwork would be a good ref to go on as he had in hand a sample to make his profile from.
