Eric "Winkle" Brown RIP
« on: February 22, 2016, 08:39:09 AM »
Just heard the sad news that the great man died today, age 97.
Heard him on"Desert Island Discs" last year - what a life!
He met and flew with Ernst Udet in the thirties, joined the Royal Navy and was their most decorated pilot ever and still holds the world record for most types of aircraft flown (over 400!). Was at the liberation of Bergen Belsen as an interpreter and even helped in the interrogation of Goering at Nuremberg.
What a guy.

Indeed, amongst pilots a Greatest of the Great! 487 different types in his Log Book, several records including almost 3000 Carrier Landings, first jet carrier landing and launch, and the list goes on! A great aviator and truly great man; "Blue Skies, Sir Winkle"!

Very sad news indeed.

A good friend of mine was invited to attend Captain Brown's 97th birthday at the Bucks Club in London, just a few weeks ago, where he recounted many anecdotes and a lively discussion of flying the Me 262. 100 pilots were invited to attend the celebration.

I was also priviliged to meet Captain Brown at a lecture he gave at the Brooklands Aviation Museum, many years ago.

After the lecture, he very kindly signed a copy of his book " Wings of the Liftwaffe" for me.

The account of his lifetimes work left a profound impression , and at the conclusion there was a standing ovation, by the full to capacity audience.

We will not see an aviator of his like again.
