Hello, all -
I've dithered as to whether putting up another build log but finally made up my mind. I'm therefore posting up one on Revell's ancient 1/28 scale DR1 bought as a gift for my 50th birthday by both my lads.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/005_zps80b3801c.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/005_zps80b3801c.jpg.html)
I'm now a week in so have already made a good start. This will be mostly OOB build with some odd detail work here and there. Engine built as is just adding ignition wires to the spark plugs as below.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/004_zps1afe4bbb.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/004_zps1afe4bbb.jpg.html)
Cockpit is the area that needs most work as is very sparse from the box. Some details (fuel pump/spark lever) molded on the wrong way round so cut out and and sanded down these items each fuselage half. Using stretched sprue to make up the frame work visible from outside. Knocked up fuel pump and spark lever from scratch (heat stretched again) and used left over parts from spares box to made instruments and ammo box. A little more work required to make up a seat harness and then I can paint in the added detail.

Oil paint used to simulate wood in cockpit - will work some more this evening so will post up further progress reports in due course.

Hello Dave:
Nice to see one of these being built. You are really doing outstanding work on the interior. This will be fun to watch as you work your way through. I have another one of these in the stash, not sure if I will ever do it, but it will be informational to watch your progress.

Dave,
Very nice start on this OLD CLASSIC! Your interior work looks great so far! I hope you don't mind but you might want to check references on the Pump on the right side. My latest references show a straight tube front to back with a valve on the end. GvWs Fokker Jadgestaffeln has a 1/32nd drawing showing what I mean.

Great to see one of the ancient kits grace the pages of this forum, and even better to see that you are doing a build log for us. Terrific work so far Dave, the cockpit interior is taking shape very nicely, don't you just love that red plastic :) and the engine turned out really well. I'm looking forward to seeing the cockpit all painted up and the seat fitted.

You are right it isn't worth the risk. Most of us have used the pump in the past in our builds at some point. It looks better than the other way anyway 8)
As I said your interior is great! I love the frame work improvements!

Hello Dave,
Great engine and very nice interior. You made a fantastic start.

Thank you, Patrick!
Next update -
I have now finished painting the interior and have closed up the fuselage. Seat belts knocked up from a left over paper instruction sheet from a previous build. Not a perfect interior but enough to add a bit more interest when viewed casually from outside. Everything fitted together nicely with no problems encountered here. Will now need to tidy up the fuselage join - more to follow in due course.

Hello Dave:
This is coming along nicely. When you think that these molds are 60 years old, the kits still hold up fairly well. Naturally they are no comparison with WNW or Roden, but considering these were made at the beginning of the plastic age. Just the few bits you put in the cockpit really dress it up.
Looking forward to the next update.

Very Impressive interior! Lovely painting and detailing all around! As an aside here, I remember seeing the Voss version of this kit at a place called Rinks Bargain Barn in Cincinnati Ohio when I was about 8 or 9. That would have been about 1961/2ish. 8) 8)

Mark, Rick and Patrick -
Thank you - I'm now in the process of tidying up various parts - as with all these old Revell kits, the amount of flash, seams and pin holes is horrendous so much time taken in preparing parts prior to assembly which can get tedious. Every single part needs cleaning!.

Dave

Outstanding job on the interior, Dave. I feel for you, mate, having to clean up all that diamond-hard red plastic, but I know the end result will be well worth all the effort.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks, gents
Tidied up the fuselage and attached the lower wing this evening. Whilst waiting for things to set, had a go at dealing with some of the other parts.
Firstly, filed away the insides of the lower cowling (molded thick out of the box) to try and achieve a sheet metal appearance.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/005_zpsafd1e527.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/005_zpsafd1e527.jpg.html)
I then had a look at the kit prop. Decided I did not like the overall shape which looks a bit on the wide side to me - therefore filed down the sides of the prop (as best I could) until I was a bit happier with the appearance. I also shortened the boss central nut/bolt. I hope the prop looks alright now?
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/006_zps955a5923.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/006_zps955a5923.jpg.html)
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/008_zpsabf711d4.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/008_zpsabf711d4.jpg.html)
Finally, assembled the kit MG's - yet more horrible pin holes (in really awkward places) to clean up! I did consider drilling out the cooling jackets as I did in my Revell Fok DVII model - abandoned the idea after seeing these are molded solid and therefore not worth the effort. I will therefore clean/tidy up as best I can and take it from there.

Excellent progress Dave! The prop looks 100% better to my eyes! As for the Machine guns, Photo Cut once made PE MG Parts including jackets in this scale. The originator was/is a member of the WW1 modeling list. His name is Ed, perhaps Bud remembers his full name and contact info?

Rick's right, Dave, but his name is Fred. Fred Hultberg and his email address is [email protected]. Copper State also had a set and, although it doesn't show on their site yet, if you email Ilya Sobolev, one of the new owners, he might be able to dig one up for you. His address is [email protected]. Happy hunting.

Hello Dave:
The prop looks 100% better after you trimmed it down. Looks more like an Axial than a canoe paddle. It is amazing how worn out these molds get and the affects on the finished plastic. I have one of these in the original box and what a difference between the first moldings and the present molds, of which I have too. You are certainly doing yeomans work on it. Good luck with the guns, looking forward to the next update.

If you were looking for 1/28 gun jackets, Tom's Modelworks used to have a generic German gun set with the jackets. The website still opens, so I hope that means the business is still open.
-
Gentleman, than you for your help and advice regarding the MG's. However, I have decided to use the kit supplied ones anyway.
OK, update on where I am currently. Had a go at using fuse wire to simulate underside stitching. Unfortunately, one of those ideas that seem great in theory but did not work out in practice! Not brilliant, but have no intention of pulling out and starting again so will live with it.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/001_zps8827bf78.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/001_zps8827bf78.jpg.html)
filled pin holes in all the struts
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/001_zps2beb08be.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/001_zps2beb08be.jpg.html)
Underside now painted and glossed ready for applying decals. As a brush painter, it is not easy to simulate rib shading other than to use combination of light and dark shades of the light blue used for the undersides. The effect looks pretty good when seen in the flesh but has not come out well in the photo.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/003_zps549dd7b1.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/003_zps549dd7b1.jpg.html)
Lastly, started work on the undercarriage and MG's. attached legs to fairing and tidied up around the joint. Used stretched sprue to knock up ring sights for guns - this will pretty much be my limited of detailing to the MG's. They don't look brilliant but I think they still improve on the look of the kit supplied MG's - I hope!

All,
Started the painting to the undersides and fuselage. I'm deviating slightly from the Red Baron colour scheme options in the kit and going for one of his other schemes of red upper surfaces and light blue on undersides and struts. Listed as DR1 141/17. I find the overall red a bit too much and is a scheme most do in this particular aircraft.
Not sure if this is correct, but decided I would try and simulate red paint over streaked camo. Tried this by first base coating (roughly) with olive brown and then dry brushing olive grey over the top. Top coats (several) of 'carmin red' so that the undercoat shows through the red. This was another idea that seemed great in theory but now done I'm not sure it looks quite right. I suspect this method works best by spraying as opposed to brush painting. I just hope it does not look too rough and ready?
Starting work on painting lower, mid wing and interplane struts - should get mid wing on tomorrow evening so will post more updates shortly.
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,
Great update. You did a very difficult job here. It's not to reddish imho, and I suspect the camo is shining trough, though on my screen, which isn't to good, it is difficult to see but it's obviously there. I admire what you have made of this difficult kit. Keep on the great work!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Hello, Patrick -
Thank you! - I'm really pleased to have your support on my build. Yes, in the flesh, you get a better view of the camo showing through the red. It seems t have become lost in the photos.
I have made some more progress today so will add more pictures later on this evening.

Dave

Hello Dave:
The cammo under the red barely shows up, but I can see what you are doing here. I think it looks pretty neat and breaks up the overall red nicely. I like these old kits as I can appreciate what Revell was trying to do when they came out with them. I am enjoying your build and look forward to further updates. The lacing underneath is a nice touch as well.

Mark

Thanks, Mark -
I regret trying this out in some ways as this does not seem to work well by brush painting! However, as you rightly say, it does break up the red (and gives a darker tone) which overall looks better.
Anyway, have now fitted the mid wings and attached the MG's, cabane struts and eyelets in preparation for rigging. I have also weathered up things a bit on the underside.

This is coming together very well Dave, your brush painting is superb and you are achieving excellent results, the camo showing through the lovely red is subtle but evident. The underside blue is very nice and the decals look really good, well done so far.

PS, good job with the stitching under the fuselage.

All,
I'm starting to worry I've become a bit of bore on this build (I am getting this one together quickly) so apologies!
However, I did some more work over the last couple of evenings. I have now painted, applied decals, fitted and rigged the top wing. Fitting the upper wing proved to be a bit of a challenge - tricky getting the cabane struts to fit (when installed on fuselage the part that attaches to underside of wing were angled and not straight - wing attachment slots are straight) so involved twisting the cabane struts at the top to correctly meet the wing attachment point on the underside. Got there in the end though - all three wings have aligned beautifully when view from top and bottom.
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/001_zpsbcaeb56e.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/001_zpsbcaeb56e.jpg.html)
However, I have had to settle for a less than perfect fit to the cabane struts, especially on the port side. Try as I might I could not get then to match the angle of the lower strut already in place. In the end, settled (after lots of shunting around) for the best fit/angle I could obtain. I hope it does not look too bad?
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/004_zps4968047b.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/004_zps4968047b.jpg.html)
So I am now on the 'downhill slide' with this build now - only the landing gear, under wing skids and prop to go!
(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/002_zps13bcc1b8.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/002_zps13bcc1b8.jpg.html)
One thing worth mentioning is the quality of the kit decals. They are superb - very easy to work with and react especially well to decal setting/softening solutions. In fact, they put to shame some of those supplied in other, more expensive kits. I really liked working with them.
More to follow in due course.
