Hello all,
Has anyone taken on the FE.2b late kit at all?
-
Mutter1,
I did one a while back, it's a fine Kit and it'll keep you real busy for a good long while. Here's a link to the completed model and there's an associated Build Log here as well. I think my old Photo Bucket Account expires tomorrow or even today but the photos are still there now.

Those FE pushers look to scare me to death!
-
It looks intimidating. But I am looking forward to it.
-
Mutter,
Looking forward to seeing your FE.2b thread my friend. Go Get'em!
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Great choice! I‘ll follow closely.

Team Fee! I'll be watchin' too. I've got an Early in the queue, and plans for a D....

Looking forward to your build also!

Hello all,
I have a question. I have seen a picture of a painted and weathered DH.2 upper wing with the roundel on the underside faded in to look like it is showing through the fabric of the lower surface.... can this be applied to all RFC aircraft?
thank you in advance!

I think that depends on how the wings were doped/painted. Clear doped wings had a shine- through effect, so you could see the roundel as a dark shadow when looking upwards at the lower side of the upper wing.
But when the upper sides of the wing were painted PC-10/12, this effect is hardly visible:
There are theories that say early DH 2s were painted in an early form of protective cellulose, called PC-8. It is possible that this paint was so thinnly applied that the thicker paint of the roundels produced a visible shadow anyway.

Well the engine is painted. In the process of finishing up the small details then onto weathering. I will post pictures when it is finished.

Excellent 😀

Very impressive result!

Thank you everyone! I haven’t had much time for building lately. And repairing my Bristol F.2b has also taken away from work on this project. I will return to it very soon!!
-
Very nice work with the engine.

Afternoon everyone!
Question....I have been thinking of wrapping some of the finer EZ Line around the tail booms to represent the linen cord instead of th kit supplied decals. I was just wondering what you all think of this. It will give the spots a little more 3D appearance instead of the @d decal.
Thank you for your opinions in advance!
-
I think adding texture will be a great idea!
Gaz
-
Evening everyone!!
Well all 76 wrappings are finished on the tail booms. I also made new pulleys and added some bolts to where the struts end.

I used fine EZ Line to do the wrapping

Superb. Will certainly be referring to this blog when I build mine.
Gary
-
The wrapping is a very nice extra touch, wish I'd done that to mine. You are really adding some nice detail to this Build, keep those updates coming! :)
Cheers,
Lance

Nice job! That will certainly improve the look.

Damn fine Modeling! Something I never would have thought to do!

Thank you all!
I wasn't happy with the kit decals. They were to 2d.
-
That wrapping is a great idea....
looked at a photo of a flying 1:1 scale one (the NZ bird) and even at what would be 1/48 on my screen it looks 3d.

Great job with the extra detailing you are adding to this kit. The tail booms look terrific.

-
thank you all for the comments!! Haven't had much time to get any work done. Hoping to get back at it on the weekend!
-
Outstanding micro-detailing. You must have infinite patience to do this.

Afternoon all,
Sorry for the absence. Life has been pretty busy as of late. Having said that..I have managed to get some work done on the FE.2b. I have the “woodwork” paint finished on the cockpit. Also got the tail boom painted as well. I’ll post pics of the boom later maybe after i get the rigging and final assembly finished before I mate it to the wings and cockpit/wing section.

Awesome interior and engine work!

Wow, that cockpit is just amazing! Great work on all of those details.

Amazing detailing of everything, making a great interior. Really ramarkable build.

I quote Gaz and Giuseppe... impressive modeling!

Evening Gents!
A bit of a question. As I am building this Fee I'm planning on finishing it as 7018 "Punjab 32 Montgomery". I also have the Encore Models Albatros D.II...the kit has markings for 2 of Von Richthofen's aircraft. My question is...was the D.II painted with the light overcoat of red when he shot down Punjab 32?
Thank you in advance!
-
I would say no, this was his first kill and he was, like the others of Boelke's pupils, a brand new guy on the unit...... not likely he'd be painting up his aircraft in his own garish scheme. The Air Power Ace Profiles #3 illustrates his aircraft as either D.II 481/16 or 491/16 at the time he shot down Morris and Rees in your "Fee", and both aircraft are illustrated as natural ply and the period's 3 color wing camoflage. would guess that the most personal marks on the aircraft was the stripe behind the spinner, but that probably came later in 1916.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thank you for the info sir! I'm planning on building the D.II after I am finished with the "Fee". And at some point putting them into a dislpay together with a info card.
-
For What it is worth I agree with Lance. I wonder where the Red Painted DII came from? I remember reading that MvR and I guess some other Jasta 2 pilots used the red/brown camo color on the fuselage. IIRC MvR doesn't Mention a RED scheme in his book until after taking command of Jasta 11. But who am I to say. Not a real Historian or researcher!

Catching up again - great work!!

Hello Everyone!
Sorry for the long absence. Summer time activities have kept me away from the build. But I have managed to get a little ore done. The wings and tail section are preshaded and painted and the tail boom is done and ready for rigging

I will hopefully be clearcoating the wings and such so I can get the markings on......

The paint on the struts and their details look great!!
Steve

That tail boom is simply amazing (along with the rest of your work).
-
Thank you gentlemen! I'll try and not be so long between posts lol
-
I realised I've looked at your log but never commented. Your FE.2b is looking superb. The add of the EZ line for the straps is very clever. I'm not sure I have the courage for this plane because the rigging looks terrifying!
Just read a novel with the FE as the flown plane. Not brilliant but good enough, page turning and makes you wonder how the terrible attrition rates for pilots, observers and the planes could be sustained. Of course human lives were just fodder in all respects - in the air and in the trenches. A very different world.

Thank you for the comments! The EZ line was time consuming but I think it turned out alright. Small update. I painted the rudder this evening. I am never happy with the results of a decal that wraps around the edges of a rudder.....

This to will receive weathering once the call number decal is on and sealed.
-
The tail booms look great with those wrappings and pulleys. It is a large airframe. I saw two at the US IPMS Nats last week, it's a real jewel of a model and yours is coming along nicely.
-
Hello everyone!
I managed to get some more time in on the Fee......decals....some weathering and got the prop painted, decalled and “varnished. I tried to replicate some oil streaks on the blades...

A little more progress. I rigged up the upper control cable for the upper alerion. Made the tensioning springs out of copper wire.

Thank you! And will do!!

oh that's spot on with the reference photo.

Awesome homemade turnbuckles!

Great work on (IMHO) the best WNW kit. The tailbooms, the propeller, the cables details... Wow.

Excellent progress ;)
Well done :)

Hello everyone,
I spent the weekend working on the tail section. I finished all the flight wires for it. All that is left is the control wires which will be added after the tail is attached to the wings and cockpit.

Great photos. They look like a 1/1 scale aircraft being re-built in a restoration shop.
-
Nice work so far. Your attention to detail on the aileron control horn rigging is noteworthy as it enhances and draws attention to that area of the model. That's a lot of eye competition with the tail boom. A real Charlette's web but looks great. I have this kit and have for years. Saw one finished at the IPMS US NATS in Phoenix and was wowed by it. As Richard Alexander called it: "A real Jewel." Yours is going to be a real gem. Looking forward to seeing your progress through the build.
-
what Radarman said, with the caveat that i wonder where they got those barrels of Tamiya paint.
-
Amazing! Scary, too!
Gaz
-
Thank you all for the comments!
I can’t decide if I am going overboard with small details. I didn’t like the photoetch turnbuckles for the rudder control wires and the tension springs.....to flat. So I decided to make my own.........

+1 on your turnbuckles. Lots more detail and depth.

Hello all!
Sorry for the absence,,,,,,again. Life has been quite busy with work and little one going back to school. I have pushed on with work on the FE.2b. Wings and tail section are all attached and the rigging is underway.........
