How to put WnW undercarriage stronger ?
« on: April 30, 2015, 10:07:44 PM »
Hello gentlemen,
I'm looking for good ideas to put my WnW model's undercarriage stronger. I see J1's one is sagging because of the upper wing weight. Anyway, I think WnW undercarriage are very frail, don't you ?
I'm looking by SAC but there's only few model like SE5 or Fokker D VII.
Thanks for your opinion.  ;)
Best regards.
Alain.

Your choices are somewhat limited. Short of doing a Bo and scratch building your own struts out of brass or a similar material I think the few metal sets you mentioned are about all there is. Structural rigging helps some but doesn't solve an issue caused by weight.

A thin coat of Cyano glue spread over the part thinly can help, I used this method to stiffen Roden & WNW Albatros aerleron levers too.

Some undercarriages are simple enough to make from brass or scrtching in plastic around brass rod. I always pin weak looking contact area's anyway as a matter of course.

Besides fabricating from brass you can copy them in resin with a nice steel wire imbedded inside…

copy on right

strong! (that's a spool of lead wire the string is holding up. Don't try that with the kit part ;)

To be quite honest Alain, I have never had an issue with any of the undercarriage struts bending, warping, breaking or sagging. I have built a lot of the Wingnut kits and all of them are still standing nice and straight, even the Junkers J.1 with all of the weight of the top wing has not caused any problems. Even all of my early Roden kits have not displayed any undecarriage issues.

Hello gentlemen,
Thanks a lot for yours answers. In fact, Des, problems came from a passed models show. I was under a barnum with a temporary floor and for all the two days, it shaken because of the people moving, so my models too.
Best regards.

I can see how that would cause problems Alain, the constant vibration would put a lot of stress on the undercarriage and maybe the wing struts as well.
