Title: Wingnut Wings Albatros D.V Manfred von Richthofen
Post by: Dave W on June 15, 2020, 02:10:52 PM
When not busy herding cats here on the Forum I do manage to make the occasional model. This is the latest project, best viewed from a distance, but at least completed which is more than can be said for some others I've started.

This is the Wingnuts Albatros D.V from the Manfred von Richthofen special edition, but with the kit's MvR figure replaced with the excellent Model Cellar MvR figure I reviewed here recently.

The Albatros has been one of the best selling kits in the Wingnuts catalogue and with good reason. This model was brush painted with a mix of Vallejo paints. Rigging is with rolled electrical wire.

The von Richthofen figure was painted with mixes of Citadel, Vallejo and Jo Sonja's paints.

Love it Dave. The red is exactly right. They couldn't get pigments through the British blockade, so red paint was not so bright and not so thick. To my eye you nailed it perfectly. Great figure too.

Your Albatros and MvR figure turned out great, Dave. Looks like autumn 1917 has come alive on your bench. Bravo!

Great Job Dave, bravo! And to think it's brush painted too - I can't seem to paint anything with a brush these days, how do you achieve such good results?

Cheers,

BC

I can only echo what already has been said. A really great Albatros next to a really great figure. Even the basework looks very natural and vivid.
Best regards,
Andreas

Very well done Albatros Dave! I love the Incredible Hand Painted finish! The figure looks great and really sets of the scene!. One question, How does one "Roll" wire?

Very nice Dave, and I'll add my praise on the quality of the finish; like Brad I've lost the skill of brush painting completely and wonder at how you and several other of our members can produce these flawless finishes with a "hairy stick"! Great figure as well, another skill I've always admired but find beyond my abilities. Last, the version of red is indeed perfect to my eye, dull but definitely striking in tone. Beauty!
Cheers,
Lance

As the others have said, brilliant results.  One would never guess its been brush painted.
I do like the MvR figure.

Dave,
That's a great presentation. I feel it sums up the attraction of WWI models that exists today.

Very nice. I wish my handbrushed finishes were as smooth as that, looks like an airbrush. And an outstandingly well painted figure.

Dave, that is really a very nice Albatros, and yes, your paintwork is great! The paint is may be not on a airbrushed level - but that gives, at least here in the big scale, a very authentic look of a hand painted real Albatros. The figure fits well (to paint a figure is a art of itself).

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks for the kind words folks. This model certainly looks better with social distancing viewing in place :)

For those interested in the dark arts of brush painting, have a look over on the Nostalgia Board where I have uploaded an excellent painting guide from the golden era of Scale Models. Thanks as always to Ray Rimell for his permission to run this article from the Scale Colour special.

Rick- you asked about rolled wire rigging. This is a technique I learnt from Ray's time as editor of Scale Models. It involves taking lengths of 5 or 8 amp electrical fuse wire ( or 28 gauge craft wire), and using a flat metal ruler to roll it straight and rigid on a glass or ceramic surface. Use a set of old school dividers ( mine are from high school more than 50 years ago now) to measure the length needed on the model, cut with a scalpel and apply with PVA glue or Elmer's to the model.

Real wire looks better because it's authentic and adds structural strength to the model.

Beautiful Albatros Dave, I love your wire rigging. I've been contemplating doing something similar and wondering if it would work. Now I know!

Is it Vallejo model colour paint? I have been wondering about painting a whole model with it too. It's a lovely finish you've achieved with it.

Sorry to be late to the party - I am still catching up. An excellent rendition of a famous Albatros and the figure sets the model off very well indeed. I am pleased to read that another old timer is also using the tried and tested hairy stick method for painting - which incidentally can give results as good as any spray gun, and in some cases better! I am also a fan of rolled wire (finer on models in the True Scale of course, but also cribbed from Ray Rimell and Scale Models in the 1970's!), so in my opinion this model is a complete winner.

Stephen.
