Title: POLL - How big is your stash?
Post by: Des on July 14, 2013, 09:28:31 AM
Just for a bit of fun please let us know how many model kits you have stashed, join the poll but be honest with your totals.

Your stash means all models kits not just WW1 aircraft models.

Around 50 ww1 scouts ( i don't have repeated models and i know... i don't have all of them, i still have to buy some!); a Staaken; a drachen baloon all 1/72.

And a few random models that for one reason or another took my atention. Like Ouragan jet fighter; Bell H-13 Sioux heli... if you guys remeber that MASH series from tv; 1/16 Sopwith Camel (from Model Airways) and a few others.

This, plus an Academy Nieuport 17, a Roden DIII, a Hasegawa P47D, and an Eduard Roland CII from the good man Lance would be the extent of it. It's not getting any bigger.

I would love to see what a few hundred kits looks like. Do you Rolodex them?

Just over 200. Been building the stash over many, many years. There are multiples of some kits, so as to be able at some point build a different version with AM conversion parts.

Just about to add 5 more WNW when they arrive from NZ!!

25 ish - haven't counted but roughly half are WWI models.  I probably complete 5-6 in a year (some) so getting on for 5 years worth if I stop buying now!
Title: Re: POLL - How big is your stash?
Post by: IvotB on July 14, 2013, 08:27:26 PM
I guessed it: definitely more than 50, perhaps more than 100, but then I would have to really count them.

Most of the models in my stash are 1:72 models meant to become RNLAF versions or USAFE 32TFS. A few 1:48 modls and just one 1:32 model.

There is also a large number of 1:87 modelrailroad models waiting to be constructed and some wooden model ships.

When considering these groups it might well be more than 100.

My attic is getting crowded.

Definitely more than I will be able to built during a lifetime, but I also haven't finished collecting ;D

Ivo

In just over two years since switching from 48th to 32nd Scale I`ve achieved a Stash of roughly 25, 20 being in the new scale. I kept a couple of the old scale because they were gifts from family. Then there`s the ever growing After Market Stuff pile of decals, PE, and Resin bits etc. and more about to be ordered.
Life is good!

I  have just a few...
Being 66 years old and that you can't take them with you etc.........
However, my hands are still rock stable and my mind is  still razor sharp :)

As some of you are aware of, I like  all kinds of iconic vintage aircraft.
My only  problem (the same as we all have), is what to build next.  ;D

Actually,  I was thinking of that as it would be a quick, easy build and the last of the old  Pyro models I  have
It almost  all CDL with few parts and  relatively  easy rigging, etc .

I need something quick and easy  after the  Bleriot  is done.   :)

There is something elegant about this fragile little  aircraft.

Near as I can figure, I'm close to 400 after I culled the stash in the basement and threw out a ton of old kits last spring. My collection is mostly AFVs. The following shelf is two deep in AFVs with some cars and aircraft too.

This one is just more AFVs under one of my work benches with that cool Arado floatplane kit too. I'm a bit of an impulse buyer.

These are the majority of my aircraft kits and as you can see I'm relatively new to winged things.

I don't actually know but I do know if SWMBO conquered her fear of spiders and stuck her head through the loft hatch I'd get my marching orders no doubt ::)

Scores of *in progress8 a few unstarted and a sea of abandoned builds in all kinds of genres from large scale figures to Viking ships.

@180, all WWI and all 1/48 with the exception of 6 WNW kits.  I'm 64 and, unlike Joe, I believe that I can't die as long as there are still kits in my stash.  Sort of a variation on the Winchester Mansion story.  I think I enjoy collecting them nearly as much as building them.  My wife has graciously given me the entire closet in our hobby room and I keep finding ways to pack more in.

Up till a couple of years ago I managed to keep my stash under 10 pieces. In the recent years my production rate dropped but I am still happy to be below 20, counting some items I will most probably never touch. The surely-to-be-built stash includes:
1/72:
Albatros D.II
Fokker Dr.I
Aviatik D.I Berg
Bristol Scout
1/32:
DH2
and Sopwith Triplane on the bench.

Well, this has been a sobering exercise. And useful (thanks!).
165, which was a little more than I was hoping for. It's not that I don't appreciate kits in their own right - isn't it great, just browsing through a box these days? But I don't have so much space that I can be carefree with it. And as so many have written here, age will eventually become an issue.

The funny thing is, that many of the purchases spun off from a desire to actually start working through what I already had: I thought up a few projects, namely a couple of layouts (a mid-40s German 'civil' airfield, and a 60s Soviet one, ie. basically the same German looking one with the kits swapped round); various small displays I should really call vignettes; and a series of 32 scale WWI 'planes of famous pilots'. But as you can imagine, most of these entailed getting a lot more models eg. extra MiG 21s, a fuel truck to go with the 0/400 (this scene will definitely happen), a Model T ambulance to go with the American DH4... and a variety of figures to flesh it all out.

In my imagination, it all looks wonderful. I've just got to hold off getting any more for a while. Until I clear some space by getting some of these built :) The one blessing is, almost to my surprise, is that I've given a lot as gifts and people have really liked them. I think it's because they're biplanes, they have a certain weird appeal even for non-plane nuts.

Mark

112, all 1/32 aeroplanes, all pre 1946 subjects.

Around 32 WWI kits, 2 or 3 interwar planes and the rest WWII. I've also tons of associated AM, including Eduard BigEd sets, HGW detail sets, gun barrels, cockpits, decals, etc, etc.

German planes are the largest part of the stash, not from any planning but because they had great camo schemes in both wars. WNW, Trumpeter, Hasegawa, Revell, Roden, Special Hobby, Azur, Tamiya, PCM, Encore, Eduard and Hobbyboss are the largest contributors, but I've also J Rutman, Scrathbuilders, Dragon, GMF, Craftworks, MDC, Silver Wings, Academy, & HK Models kits in the stash.

Latest addition is HPH's superb Walrus kit, which is also the single most expensive kit I've ever bought.

I'm thinning it all down to about a dozen kits, but it's very, very hard to decide what to let go of!!!

I once had a stash of over 1,000. I actually had a garage stacked floor to ceiling on 3 walls plus some in the crawl space below the stairs and some in a small attic. Over the last 19 years I have sold or traded most. My most recent was trading all but a few in progress WW1 & WW2 1/48th scale for a few WW1 1/32nd kits.... there might have been a Messerssomething involved also  :-\Now at most 100 to 150RAGIII

I just logged on after almost a week in Nijmegen, where I met a lot of canadian, british, french, danish and swedish armed forces, whom I might have asked (although only the first groups might have known the answer), but could you enlighten me about the SWMBO abbreviation. well the last time i counted it was 225ish but it looks like about twice that now but its hard to estimate as i have 3 large storage shelf units and a closet full. my guess(and this poll may make me bother to count) would be realistically btw 350 to 450ish, 3/4s of which are ww1 aircraft.  the president of my local ipms club claims to have 2 to 3 thousand 1/72 kits of all genres but has been collecting since the 50s.

I wish I had photographed my 1,000 plus kit stash at the height of my collection. Let me put it this way: I Once had circa 1996,
Every available 1/72nd kit of Viet Nam war Aircraft
Every WW1 kit Available in Injection Molded kits of WW1 Aircraft, Including Cottage industry such as Pegasus, Merlin, and Meikraft.
Many 1/72nd WW1 Vacs
All of the Aircraft flown by JG2(WW2) and JG71 in 1/72nd
All of the Aircraft avaikable Flown by 19,43, and 56 Sq. RAF from the 30s to Tornados in 1/72nd
All of the Injection Molded Aircraft Flown by the 94th and 27th Aero Squadron in 1/72nd, WW2 through the F15
Please Note The WW1 Squadrons are included in the first list such as JG1 Albies, Tripes,DVIIs and DVIIIs, The 19,43 56 Sq. WW1 is included in the First List, and so forth.
In addition I was almost completely Transferred to 1/48th so I had all of the injection Molded WW1 Aircraft available at the time including Aurora/K&B, Lindberg, Eduard, Classic Vacs, Sierra vac, Wings 48, Koster, etc.
All of the Aircraft flown by JG2,19,43,56, the 27th and 94th , Storks, Lafayette, etc, from WW2 through the Latest Jets.
Many WW1 and WW2 Vacs
I was also into Pacific Theatre WW2 Stuff so I had all of the Available USAF, USN, And Japanese Aircraft Available at the time. (Injection)
I Loved the Phantom so had quite a few of them in 1/48th.
Battle of Britain Aircraft in 1/48th and 1/72nd, Bombers Mostly 1/72nd
and then there were the 1/32nd kits: Classic hasegawa, revelle, etc, about All Produced.
1/24th, BOB and a couple of Oddballs including the Black Knight Nieuport 17
Then there was the Armor  :o

PS, I am forgetting many I am sure

PS: When I said I had all of the Aircraft flown by JG1, the Storks, Us 1st pursuit Group, etc. I meant that I had each type for each squadron. For example there would be Fokker DVIIs for Jasta 4,6,10, and 11, Albatros DVs for the same. FG2s for 19,43, and 56 etc. etc. Nieuport 17s for N3,26,73,qand 103,the same with SPADS, Moranes, for WW2,Mirages and so on.
PPS: Also had all of the Hasegawa High Tech Kits in all scales, The Right Staff Resin kits, All of the Trimaster releases, and so on.

I own an embarrassment of plastic riches. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 1/48th kits mostly WW1. The number of WNW kits I have is strictly confidential... as is the aftermarket goodies... not to mention the stacks of decals! On top of that is the massive library of aviation books!
Never has so little been done with so much!

WNW, a dozen plus 3 Rodens
1/48 WW I, all mfgs 80+
1/48 WW II & modern, 300+
1/32 WWII, 5 plus a Tamiya F4U to come

Like Jasta B, aftermarket, decals and a big library...

Some of the earlier posts express surprise at 500 + stash, are they WW I only (as this is primarily a  WWI site), as for larger numbers I personally know of people with a stash exceeding 2000 and one with over 5000 kits all types of kits.

I've known a couple of guys like that, and I guess I'm mystified at the idea of paying a storage unit to store large boxes of boxes of kits. I do pretty much only 1/32 and am at 100 ( uh.. or so!) There are a few more I want, but I digress. My house (3 closets) is fairly full of kits, but at least I can see and touch my stash. maybe I'm lucky to stay on this side of the ragged edge of control.

I'm not saying because you never know who might read this (What, me paranoid?). I culled my personal collection to just WWI and SCW subjects in the last few years and actually counting the unbuilts kits will just make me depressed. I flip kits to fund my hobby and usually have some transitory inventory on hand too.
