Started my DVII a few weeks back - just about to close it in so thought I'd share photos of the innards. These are are going to be very tricky to get into the fuselage as the alignments are defined by flexible frames and all the other added panels.
The engine is only enhanced by adding crude spark plugs. Next time I'll do them better and even try wiring them...
Lots of little touch-ups to do before sealing it all in.

The one question I have:
With all the protrusions of the innards through the cowlings and fuselage how do you mask that for final painting of the body of the plane? I see some people seem to use foam? What is that stuff you use?

Very nice interior! The wood tones are great and I absolutely Love the Leather cushion! As for the foam used by many for masking I can't help. I will say that on Mercedes engine aircraft I have tried to spray the cowl panels adjacent to the engine prior to installation. This allows me to just tape around the engine to about 1/4 inch . I then just spray away once the kit is assembled. The one different Model was the Jasta 6 bird that needed blck and white stripes at an angle aligning from the fuselage to cowl panels. In this one I just used small pieces of tape carefully applied around the engine. I hope this helps some!

for the foam I use a kitchen scourer, they come very cheap and have a thich layer of foam, handy to cut into shape. I use 2 types, one is a little less dense then the other so it can be stuffed in smaller openings.
Also I use a very thin but very dense foam they use at my work to line trays that hold tools, but I can not help you with a supplier for that.
But I would like to know what other people use for their foam!

Alistair - great work on the engine and cockpit. Thanks for asking about masking the engine. I'm at the same point on my Pfalz. RAGIII and hideous1973's answers were really helpful.

The masking worked really well in the end - tape plus kitchen scouring sponge. I did about three masking attempts and rejected the first two before committing to the brush. It is a nasty area to mask with the belts and other parts protruding through the fuselage right along the mask line.
I have just one or two minor touch ups to do and no breakages of the fragile cockpit parts. Will post photos in the next few days. The blue/yellow combo looks excellent to my eyes.
The dry fit of the cowling parts indicates problems though. There is a very faint twist to the frames at the front and it throws things out. Will need careful working as I want all the cowlings on and a tight fit on the nose. There is flex enough in the whole front end to correct everything...I think.
I'll check out your Pfalz shortly Dave. From your earlier model making evidence you'll sail through it.

I've missed this Thread until just now, beautiful work on the interior and the engine! As for the foam question I have an assortment of the stuff salvaged from the packing of various purchases over the years; tools, electronics and video stuff, glass ware etc. are great sources and offer a variety of densities. Most of it is very similar to the liner Iwata uses in their airbrush cases for example. Works like a charm and the price is right!

Just another quick comment. I have said before that this is one of my favorite schemes for a DVII. Something about the Yellow, Blue, and Lozenge that just makes the overall look terrific!

Nice to know there is some interest. The blue/yellow colour is really hard to photograph - the camera, I think, struggles with such complimentary colours. The blue also shows every bit of dust. This the best I could do. I am still working on the leather around the cockpit...

Awesome progress. The blue and yellow contrast looks great- looking forward to seeing it with the serpent decal. Your paint job looks excellent, and you did a perfect job sealing the fuselage seam. Engine and cockpit look tremendous. I'm at the same point - about to start putting the lozenges on the wings.

The blue and yellow look great! I also have to comment on how well you have erased the fuselage join seam behind the cockpit. Something that has given me fits on my WNW DVII builds!

I'm progressing with one serpent on...that was hard, it is a wrinkly thing.
But working forward I have the same problem that others have had - somewhere in this forum. The upper wings do not marry together. The upper surface is 2 to 3 mm short of the lower surface at the trailing edge. I have glued them together and corrected but will have to wait and see how the decals fit. Seems to be a rare WNW problem with this kit!?

I wonder how you painted that great looking seat -I'm struggling with mine, after 3 tries I'm inclined to wrap it in Lozenge...

Got the serpents on and they are a tricky decal - inclined to snap.
Thought you might be interested in the cut back colouring on the lozenges. This the WNW recommended mix - a brown with clear coat. Lower wing done and matte coated. Upper wing with the fresh lozenges - one more to go on. I definitely like the lower wing look.
Nearly done all the parts and ready for final assembly. A great model of an extraordinary plane.
Jeroen - I'm not a seat expert by any means. Just leather colour with added red, dark grey wash, light overcoat and seal.

From what I can see, the serpents look fine, as do the blue and yellow. That’s a great color scheme.
Regarding your comment about the upper and lower wing parts fit, I had no issues at all with my D.VII.

Congratulations on a really beautiful model, Nicely done top to bottom! The "filter" effect on the lozenge worked really well, a very effective technique to add realism. I have to ask, is the prop painted or wood? Either way it's very impressive!

Thank you for your kind comments. I'll save being proud to the next one or the one after that!
The prop is painted plastic from the kit. The observant people here will note it is the incorrect prop and the incorrect makers mark for this version. I made the correct one and added the marks and somehow completely lost it - in the garden somewhere during a nighttime model transfer from the studio to our main house. That was one of those really dumb modeling moments - I'll find it in the strings of a weedeater one day :'(.

That’s a really nice scheme for the DVII. The yellow and blue really contrast well. I was going to ask about the propeller too, amazingly realistic. The fading on the Lozenge really works, too many times the lozenge decals are left as is and look way to bright.

Dave the lozenges are over sprayed with a brown glaze - Tamiya X22 (x5) + Tamiya XF52 (x1) - it is called up in the model instructions. I finished everything with a matte clear coat which is just my preference.
