Seeing the parts and sub assemblies come together, especially in WWI as almost everything is modular!

Learning new techniques like woodgrain, rigging etc, and getting results beyond what I could believe I could do.

I love sitting in my little man-cave (6' x 9') surrounded by many of my favorite things (model kits, antique firearms, & military gear) while drinking a favorite beverage, listening to some great tunes or an interesting news story on the radio while I attempt to replicate some history in miniature.

Pretty much what Warren said: the intersection of hobby, passion, and interest; a cold beer, an interesting podcast, my pup at my feet. What could be better?

I love the fact you can build 'history' and love seeing it all come together.
I also enjoy learning (currently reading, not 'doing') new techniques and watching how the artisans on this site create their masterpieces and deal with problems, etc.

Messieurs !

Art, Relaxation, Creativity, Skill

When I was a boy modeling was an isolated hobby in the village I was born. Almost all of my lads thought it boring and the
girls were irritated by the military tinge.
That did not keep me from becoming a dedicated modeler  - and of course, we played with the models, I repainted them once in a while and so on.
While modeling one used what was handy and of course the models were not perfect at all; this did not matter, because at this
stage they seemed to be perfect.
But instantly it was not only the process of "Basteln"-kit building that caught me but also the interest for the real thing, the
background, which- as a little boy was made out of scarce information combined with imagination.

What I love is to open the box, the smell of the new kit, the process of building, how-to-do-ideas coming to my mind,
imaginations of the real context, painting and airbrushing (sometimes I only build to paint), feeling satisfied by doing all those things, feeling happy with the results, the suspense before showing it to my loving spouse ( her artistic eye knows no mercy),
take a look at the built model often, the smell of Humbrol paint (already burnt into my brain).
As a boy one learns fast; when reopening an old spare parts box after a quarter of a century I still knew from which model
the parts came... .
Some label modeling as "childish" or do not take it for a "serious" hobby; but playing is not cheap fun but the source of headway
and development.
Furthermore there is a lot to gain from life that has nothing to do with getting money out of it.

Through modeling I learned a lot .

Buying and collecting models and accessories.

Seriously though my favourite part, if I had to choose, would be the initial research and planning. A close second is the cockpits. I have serious AMS issues and models building takes me a very long time due to this.
I tend to buy ALOT of tools and accessories.

For me, it's a great feeling of accomplishment when I finish a model. None of it comes easy for me as I don't have much imagination nor any artistic aptitude at all. That's why I'm forever asking questions and pestering everyone to see in-progress images of their work. The interaction in forums like this have enabled me to improve my modelling abilities to a far greater degree than I could ever have hoped before the advent of the internet age.

Cheers,

Chris
You can have it good; You can have it fast; you can have it cheap. Pick any two, but all three are impossible.

Hey Chris, the models you've posted here look pretty impressive to me!   :D  I do agree with you about the feeling of accomplishment when a model is finished.  I sometimes look back and wonder how it actually turned out the way I wanted!   ;)

I'm a finisher completer and love the final stages, then putting the old box in the recycling as "closure" :-[
