Time for a new project. One year since the release of that lovely kit I finally decided to give it a go. But to make things more interesting I plan to build one of several post-ww1 G.3 used in Poland for pilot training. About 1920 all those G.3 were modified to have the lateral control changed from wing warping to ailerons. From the photos it can be discerned that there is a change in control cables routing but more importantly the wing outer panels have to be modified, change of outline and no visible inside batons.. So I took my courage and started the destruction.
Also some prep work for the nacelle, two visible push rod traces filled and prepared the pattern for masks to airbush the wooden structure vs the linen background. It is fun to be back to linen wood and wires after two non ww1 projects!

Very interesting: Looking forward to following your build, Przemol!!
-
It's great to see you working on a project like this again, Przemo! What an interesting subject and your ability to make fabric, wood and metal structures look so real will make this one special! I will be following carefully... Regards, Marc.
-
An interesting project. I will watch closely.
Steve

I had exactly this kit in my hands when I browsed through my stash and thought “you need to build some WWI stuff again”… Now I’ll wait patiently and watch you clearing the path…
Andreas
-
I have one of these to build for a friend (with one for myself as payment) so I'll be following with great interest!
-
Thank you for watching and all the kind words.
The wing surgery I was quite worried about is proceeding successfully and now almost complete. Just few more touches with a sandpaper and drilling the holes for the lacing around the slot on the right-hand side are left.

Some expert plastic surgery going on here! Very nice indeed.
-
I like how subtle the undulation of the fabric covering looks. Can already see this is gonna look great.
-
Thanks, gentlemen.
The work on the wings continues. The upper ones are now in one piece. The nasty slots at the outer panels connections filled and sanded smooth. I also decided I cannot leave those nasty sink marks on the undersides, they are now filled and await sanding.

Richie, for me it was a visit to Hendon too, which made me so impressed by the Caudron! (That is, besides many more..!)

As for me, I fell in love with Caudrons G.3 and G.4 after seeing them in Paris Le Bourget air and space museum.
So, now I am so much happy working on this spectacular kit. Having completed the upper wing mod I focused on the nacelle. The subassemblies are now almost ready.

Every inch as exquisite as I expected to see, Prze! Excellent work.
-
Thanks, Rick and Zac.
The nacelle almost buttoned up, except for the pilot seat which will jump in after airbrushing (to save masking it).
Also, from the onset I did not like the overdone linen bands reinforcing the struts. And lo! My example seems not to have them at all. So I am now shaving them from all the struts.

Just beautiful work going on here. Very inspiring. I’m looking more and more at my 1:72 Roseplane and Formaplane models. Definitely will be referencing this build!
-
Really nice, Przemo! And you are right, the linen taping seems a little overdone for my eyes, too. But it shouldn’t be a huge problem to thin them down with a sanding stick — even if one doesn’t have to remove them entirely.
Andreas
-
Beautiful work so far, I love it.
FWIW, I'm using sanding sticks, etc. on my Eduard Nieuport interplane struts to knock those down as well.
Warren
-
Lovely, immaculate work. It's a pleasure to see this coming together. The kit looks wonderful but the strut linen bands did look a little thick. It must be very challenging to produce a texture like that in scale by injection moulding.

This is very dangerous: I keep looking at the two on my to-do pile...

The tub looks stunning Prezmo. I very much like the beautiful lines coming together in the pointed rear and the subtle impressions of the turtleneck stringers. Looks like real fabric to me.
And a great paint job too!
Willem

Thank you.
I have finished with the tub, adding the Mr.Decal numerals decals and some wash (not in these photos, they were taken before it). I also airbrushed the linen surfaces but with the fault of Lukgraph I will pause this build for a couple of weeks. However, I promise, it will be back to my bench ASAP.

Thank you everyone.
Absolutely lovely work, Prez. I've always wondered, what is the symbolism behind the Polish red/white national insignia?
Dave V.
Not too complex. White-red was a Polish colour scheme for ages. And the checkboard itself was the invention of Stefan Stec, a Polish pilot who served in AH aviation in WW1. He used it as his personal insignia and after the war it was chosen by our military headquarters from among a handful of other red-white patterns. The order making it the official aviation emblem is dated on Dec 1st, 1918.

Beautiful work, especially love the wood effect on that undercarriage.
I'm carving test props for my Nieuport at the moment, and in particular I noticed the Gremont decal; I wish I could find a 1:32 Levasseur eagle logo... does anyone know of a source for a pair?

Mae govannen, mellon! 😉
PS But I would not carve a prop for French a/c, they were usually painted brown and all the nice wood layer effect disappears.

Better and better! Those struts are gorgeous.
And about your comment, dziękuję! I've been working on my props under the impression that they were varnished mahogany or walnut, but after reading what you wrote about painted finishes I went back and looked carefully at my reference photos. I noticed that only two out of about 25 clearly showed a varnish finish, so I posted a question on a forum dedicated to wooden propellers this morning. The moderator, who collects full-size WWI props, said to his knowledge Levasseur painted theirs as well... at least the section of a Levasseur he owns, and others he's seen, show a red-brown painted finish like your Gremont. So my prop will be more accurate thanks to you.

One question: what am I seeing when I see wood on the underside of the wing ribs. Does the fabric not cover at this point?

Quick question (apologies if I missed it) - what colour did you use for the blue metal components? It looks great!

Thank you, everyone for your cheering. It is great to know you believe in me ;)
One question: what am I seeing when I see wood on the underside of the wing ribs. Does the fabric not cover at this point?
It is my, maybe naive, thinking, that the wooden ribs will slightly see through the linen.
Quick question (apologies if I missed it) - what colour did you use for the blue metal components? It looks great!
It is a custom mix of Vallejo Azul Mate 70962 and Gris Claro 71.050. Roughly 50/50...
Today work on the rigging was not a breeze. The intricacy of the structure led to some lines loosening after others were tightened. They had to be cut off and replaced, this leading at some spots to damage to the eyelets and torn off turnbuckles. But I managed to complete the wings cellule and I even gathered my courage to attach the tail trusses. More hopefully tomorrow. (It is great to have holidays, already)

Interesting to see both sets of wheels on one plane.
This is indeed one of the reasons, I chose this example. If you look at the photo I posted in the beginning of this thread, you will notice, between the legs of the pilots standing at this a/c that it indeed had coverless wheels on the left side. ;)

Thank you, Dave. I am not sure yet, what will be next, most probably the resin RWD-4 in 72nd scale. I will make my mind very soon because this build is finished. Some rush photos here, a proper gallery will follow tomorrow.

Exceptionally nice looking and cleanly done rendition of a very complicated model, Przemol. Great photos.
The stitches on the outer wing panels are very well done.
Looking forward to seeing more pictures in the completed section.

Wow! Beautiful work on an aircraft I’ve always admired. Someday I’ll build a 1/72 version. Your build will definitely be a great reference for me.
All the best,
Tim
