I started this a looooooooong time ago and got burnt out on it . It was very challenging kit to say the least and I ended up getting a donor kit from a forum member just to get this far . It is at the painting stage and the all struts are all made as well , just waiting paint . Well time to get this one finally finished . Will post pic's later of the details .

:)

Looking great from were I stand Terri, I hope the second time is the charm.... ;D Looking forward to your progress.
-
Almost done ;D waiting for magic painting!

Great to see you working on one that was delayed so long. Looking Fantastic!

Nice to see that you have been able to return to this at last. Always a good feeling when a shelf queen is displaced into a display cabinet.
Stephen.
-
I'm hoping this time around I will be able to get her finished and she will be able to join the rest on the completion shelf .
Here is the low down on what has been done so far . Most of the pit is scratched build with the PE parts coming from the kit . Seat belts are made by flatting fine lead wire . The upper decking covering the engine is from the donor kit and same with the floats as well . The struts are set for paint , but I still need to pin a few first . Lower surfaces I still got one more coat of light blue to apply blending in the weathering done so far and still have the finish off the main flight controls on the upper wing . Then the white fields for the national markings . Most of the PE parts will not be used , just to damn small .

I'm so glad to see this built. It's one of my favorite aircraft. You're doing a great job so far.
-
Nice to see a CSM 1/48 scale kit being put together. I think the ultra-fine detail in this scale is Frank's territory.
-
Sometimes it's a bit surprising how close one was to the finish line when a model ended up on the shelf. Hopefully this is the case for you here! Good looking build so far!
/Fredrik
-
Hi guys and sorry for such a late reply back . Thank-you for your show of interest on the project .
Ken , It's not the detailing . I think the PE parts sit too high for the scale . I rather have some of that detail moulded in .PE is good for some details , but not all of it . And failing eyesight ;) Frank would be in all is glory on this one with the detailing and fit nicely with his W-4 . Would love to see CSM retool this kit in plastic form either 48 scale or 32 scale .
Fredrik , I still have three more shelf queens in the stash which I will work on over the winter months . Another CSM kit , Special Hobby and an Eduard all WW 1 subjects . But ...knocks on wood . If they get done they get , if not -there for next time .
Terri
-
Great recovery from the shelf of doom! Yes a retool or better yet a redo in 1/32 from CSM would be awesome to see as this is a very interesting aircraft.
-
Thanks P ! Work will continue this weekend
Terri

How about a shelf of Doom swap fest !!! We could finish each others kits :)

Wing components and struts are looking great T!

Might make a good group build ......
Terri

Thanks Rick ! :) ;)
Made a bit of progress , but not as far as I would have like . But it is the Christmas season and lunch 's and parties and folks dropping by ...all good !
I pinned the main float struts and finished drilling the rest of the holes in the fuselage for those said pins and the holes for the flight controls on the fuselage sides . Painting is under way on the struts , still the other side ( wing struts to floats ) . The undersides of the wings and fuselage have been toned down with their over coat . Almost finished with the painting now . Still have a few other struts and the white fields for the national markings .

Hi Terri!
The starting kit is a real challenge for all modellers, not for novices for sure.
Your work seems near to a great victory, I will follow next steps.
Many congrats!
Roberto
-
Oh Terri, how could I miss this?
I must admit, that the amount of interesting threads is increasing, but I'm not able (from time point of view) to read every sentence written in this forum :o
Frank would be in all is glory on this one with the detailing and fit nicely with his W-4 .
Thank you Terri, I also own some resin kits, but I have not yet build one. Only engines and things like that.
You have done a good job so far, but I also think it is a good idea to put a kit for a while aside, if some problems appear.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hi Rick , thanks for dropping by and for the support . 8)
Roberto , might be close to the finishing line , but there is still a lot which needs to be done before a victory can be called . I do look forward on hearing your feedback as I progress through this one though , great motivation :)
Danke sehr Frank ! Sooner or later you would have found it ;) , but I do understand where you are coming from . Hard to follow and keep up to date on what everyone has on the bench and I miss a few here and there . Just to many to reply to sometimes .
This isn't my first resin kit and won't be my last , still 3 more CSM kit's and a few others including WW2 and built a few in past before . I will say this though , not a fan on resin struts
Terri
-
Nice progress, Terri. Pinning the struts will make it a lot stronger.
-
Sorry I missed your post Ken didn't mean to , but thanks for dropping by and supporting my efforts :) Ja , I pin all of my struts, even the few 32 scale kits I pinned the struts . It adds a lot of strength to the joins . When I had Blau ( cat ) before his passing he would knock the builds of the shelfs if he didn't get his way ...those pins proved their worth !
I don't have an up-date but starting this Friday I'm off for 10 days ! Soooo...lots of progress to follow ;)
Terri
-
Its far past Friday, Terri! ;D
-
It is past Friday Ken and I bring photo's ;D
Painting is done , but for the life of me I couldn't remember the mixed I used for the upper surfaces and the out tips of the controls are a darker shade . I also had paint lift on the rudder and mismatched colour for that touch up . Prop is still a work in progress but I'm ready for clear coating for the decals . Engine is re-painted and I added valve springs just to give it a little more interest and re-stall the gun after the rest of it is put together .

Really looking sharp T! As for any Mismatched paint, I don't see it but I am sure it happened in the field!! Loving this one as always!

Nice and steady progress T. :)

Thanks Rick and Robin :) 8)
It would seem with this build that LOTS has happened in the field . After clear coating and letting this dry overnight ( used future , brushed on ) decals got added and another coat of clear once dried . Future again was used , left for 6 hours to dry . Went to apply Flory's wash ( grime ) , everything was going great up to the point when I removed the wash it had stained the surface and I couldn't get it off , even washing with soap and water had no effect . At this point I wanted to bin the whole thing and forget about it . Right from the get go this build has put up one hell of battle . I pressed on and sealed the wash in with Testors dull coat . Will let this dry overnight and starting with the weathering with pastel chalks . Can also start making the many , many eyelets and turnbuckles .

Beautifully painted and decalled T!
RAGIII

Looking fantastic Terri. Nice progress.
-
I don't see anything wrong with the finish in the pictures. If it bothers you that much, maybe the pastel chalks can improve the appearance by lightening out the heavy spots?
-
Thank-you Rick , Juan and Ken for the kind comments :)
Ken , that was my plan and it did pay off for the most part . Some areas not so much , but it is an improvement .
Weathering is done and everything got a finally seal lucking in the pastels . Up next can start making the eyelets and can start assembly on this bird .

Ed
-
Ken , Rick and Ed . Thanks guys ! 8)
Ed , I actually started this build a few years ago and it ended up as a shelf queen , wish I was that quick with all my builds ....
Lower wings are fixed in place as well as the cab strut and per did the rigging lines so they can be tensioned right way once the top wing and inner inter struts are in place and glued is dried . The port side of the lower line as it's rigging lines , still have the starboard side to do before the top wing gets mounted .
-
:) Up-date started end on page 4
-
This looks like it would be a difficult plane to get in and out of, with the cabane strut behind the cockpit.
(And its sooo small ;D)
-
Great progress Terri! Excellent prep on the rigging!
RAGIII
-
Looking good Terri. What is the material you are using for the rigging? It looks metallic in the photo.
Thanks and keep up the great work,
Kevin
-
Hi Ken , Rick and Kevin . Thanks guys for the continuing support on this build . It is really needed with this one .
Ken , it's even worse with the top wing in place ...it's like the monkey bars at the local playground .
Kevin , I'm using smoked invisible thread ( mono line ) I pick this up at one of the local fabric shops about 15 years ago it was around 6 bucks for it , but there is MORE than a lifetime supply ! You can get it clear as well . The clear can be pick up at the dollar store or buck or two . ( spool in the background of photo )
After spending a few hours the top wing is now mounted and the struts in place . I only had to shorten one strut from the twist in the wing . With all the wrapping of the parts I tried my best to get everything line up and straight in relation to that warpage . I total missed making the bracing struts for the tail planes so I will do this when I rig up the flight controls ::)
This will set over night to dry up more ....the rigging begins .
-
;)
-
Impressive T! Looks fantastic "Resting" on the floats!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick ! :) Fingers crossed that the struts for the floats go well . I really haven't done much test fitting with this so I'm hoping that it doesn't come back and bite me in the ass .
Terri

Terrific work on this little gem, Terri. Hats off to you for the work you've done and how well it's looking so far. Following this one closely.
Cheers,
Gary

Impressive T! Looks fantastic "Resting" on the floats!
RAGIII
Yeah...I like it also.
Something in between a low rider and Thumper feet. ;D
Looks great already T.!
Robin :)
-
Thank you Gary and Robin ! :)
After inventing a whole new language during the rigging of this bi-plane .( Had a few lines break and one I had to redo three times !) The main rigging is now done and can move on the the floats .
-
;)
-
Gotta say Terri, you've tamed this handful of a beast rather well! The strut layout makes the top wing addition look like a real challenge and the rigging appears anything but simple. I can see why it was on the shelf for a while but it's almost there, and looking very nice!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Outstanding rigging as always Terri!
RAGIII
-
Howdy Lance ! Taming the beast is an understatement . I don't know why I punish myself so and wonder if I'm actually crazy enough to continue down the rabbit hole , but I could only come up an answer that's fitting ...dame rights I'm chasing that rabbit !!!
Thanks Rick , must say though a little out of shorts with rigging in 48 scale . Got used to rigging in 32 scale . Fingers don't work the same like they used too .
Terri
-
Okay , this has ended up back in a box and on the cornor of the work bench . While working on the float struts I ended up bending two of the pins out ruining the strut ripping the plastic in a worse way . I don't have spare contrail strut to make a new one . So until I can get a replace strip or the right size brass tubing or even a giant pain of green hands so I smash this thing and call it a puny airplane !
Terri
-
Aw. :(
Don't you dare! Sit on your hands and leave it alone for now.
Consider Albion Alloys brass tubes...great stuff. :)

Robin
-
Hi Robin ! No worries , it won't be sitting for another 3 years like before . It will be finished . Thanks for the link as well . I get my brass tubing through Hannants . I do have other contrail strut , just not the size I need . If I use a smaller diameter it won't have the strength needed ( resin is very heavy ) .
Terri
-
Terri you have been here many times before as I recall.... Just wait a few days to calm down and then come to the problem again with a new pair of eyes and before you know it this will be finished and another excellent and unusual type added to your collection. When my language turns to a darker shade of blue I have to remind myself that I wanted a challenge - after all there is no point in modelling without one - at least not in my opinion!
Stephen.
-
And when you return to the build, we'll all be here to see you reach the finish line! No pressure! 😊
/Fredrik
-
Thank you Stephen and Fredrik for the support . :)
Stephen , either way it is going to be more than a few days before I can get back to it once again , but it will get done . It's not a race I figure and if it takes me longer ..well so be it . Just hope that there will be no more mishaps with the finishing bits .In the meantime I'm deciding if I should pick up another shelf queen or start a new WW1 project .
Terri
-
Sorry about your Strut mishap T! I am sure whatever you start next will be great! I also will be on the lookout for when you return to this Beauty!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick , will be back at it hopefully by next weekend . Made contact with a friend and some contrail strut is on it's way !!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
Terri

Sorry about your Strut mishap T!
Yep, struts are always problematic, especially if they are in scale.
Terri, I hope you will be able to finish it one (not so far away) day ;)
All the best,
Frank

Will be back on her this weeked Frank . My struts where in today's mail !!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D X a whole bunch more !

Back on track and got the new strut made . I still need to add the pins and paint them . The joins have been filled with a thick ca and already sanded back to smooth them out .
-
:)
-
Nice work on the strut T! Looking forward to the next update!
RAGIII
-
Good to see that you have picked this one up again. Final straight now Terri - you can finish thia one and take it off the shelf and put it inot the cabinet.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Rick and Stephen , she is getting closer on crossing that finish line . Float struts for the fuselage are now in place . The one float is just resting in place for test fitting the outer float/wing struts and we have success there ;D I do have to change the mounting holes in the other float . It sits just to far forward by 2.5mm . However , she does sit level !!! This was a challenge with all the warpage and twistiness .
-
:) Up-date starts on the end of last page :o
Terri
-
Wow Terri, your efforts are really paying off. Getting close, look forward to the floats being on.
-
Your strut repair seems to have worked out well Terri! Seems you have met the challenge and won!
RAGIII
-
Thanks guys :) Well you don't have to wait long too see what she looks like with the floats installed . That part has been conquered ! Even got the tail struts done and painted ! I'm on a roll now ...
I did knock off the rear rad pipe will fixing the exhaust in place , it is now somewhere inside the fuselage , but no biggie . Just happy that I made it this far and it sit's levelled .
Not much more to go now . Two more rigging lines up front and the flight controls and the odd PE part which is for the very end . Or I will knock them off . So next up-date she will be finished .

Terri,
I'd say you've made it through what I would consider the most intimidating part of this build.
Well done! I look forward to seeing the finished product.
Kevin

Cheers Kevin ! :)
It was a little never racking and I took my time letting each glue join dry for 20 minutes before moving on to the next strut .
Terri
-
Terrific results Terri! Looks awesome on the floats and the wing rigging looks excellent! Glad you kept at this one!
RAGIII

Assembling the non-WNW biplane-hydroplane is always tricky. But you got it quite right, Terri. Great work on this rare model. Looking forward to see it complete.
-
Nice work on the Rumpler. It's not often you see one of these built up but you did a great job on what sounds like a pretty difficult model.
-
great news Terri - I am really looking forward to seeing this one completed. A difficult kit conquered!
Stephen.

With the continuing support and it is appreciated very much , I'm all smiles right now . It's going to make folks wonder what the hell I have been up too ! Should have this wrapped up over the weekend , the rest won't take long ...knock on wood :-X

She is finally finished folks !
More photo's of hell's build in the complete section .
