Title: WNW Pup Night Trainer/Stars & Moon
Post by: rhallinger on December 03, 2012, 03:24:46 PM
Since I referenced this one over on the Group Build thread, here is what I am building from Rowan Broadbent's Sopwith Pup Pets and Trainers Sheet for the 1/32 WNW kit:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Y6bEGJ7Hb0Y/ULwxzWqXPmI/AAAAAAAAAAg/9ExACulqhUg/s640/IMG_5630.JPG

. . . and here is where I am at with the build:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QiU3AksGUtQ/ULwyF2M7gJI/AAAAAAAAAAw/zxcOBBFNXiY/s640/IMG_5635.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dytbpXsVunE/ULwySE_yFdI/AAAAAAAAAA4/3QGj7Q_RM6A/s640/IMG_5639.JPG

Please forgive the links and the fuzziness of the photos--they were taken hand-held and I am have problems with the photo sharing sites.  I will use a tripod for the finished photos.  I hope to be finshed within a couple of weeks.  :)

We're certainly getting some interesting Pups lately, thanks to Pheon's very cool sheet!

Regards,

Bob

Now, that is one very sweet looking Pup.  What a fantastic scheme.  You've done an outstanding job with the painting and decaling, Bob.  Another tip of the hat to Rowan, too.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks guys.  This one's a gift for my adult daughter, who picked the scheme when she saw Rowan's sheet.  I might not have been daring enough to try it on my own, but now I really like it!  :)

I hear you DrDave.  I've been thinking exactly the same thing since seeing your candy-striper taking shape.  ;)  The instructions say Rowan sells extra roundels so you can do multiple subjects from the sheet.  Of course, your C354 is very cool too, and McCudden's nightfighter is intriguing . . . how many more Pups was that?  ::)  I'm addicted!

Regards,

Bob

Hi Bob:

I have this sheet as well, and IIRC you have to place the stars individually.  You are certainly doing a great job with that scheme, and I too look forward to seeing you work through completion.  It is forums like this and seeing others work that motivates me to do more.
Best wishes and continue on with this neat build.

Best

She's starting to look like an aeroplane now:

The major work is done and I'm preparing the rigging points and adding details.  I am following Des's build log from the website, and it has proven very helpful.  Struts and rigging next, top wing and then undercarriage.  Per the Pheon instructions, I "borrowed" the night lights and Holt flares from the WNW Biff kit.  They are ready but not yet installed.  The Biff only has two lights, on the top of the lower wing, while the Pup has an extra light fixture on the turtle deck just aft of the cockpit.  I made the fuselage light from a length of clear styrene rod.  No photos of those yet.

I hope to have her finished by Christmas.  I'll post more progress and some detail shots soon.

Cheers!

Bob

Truly lovely, Bob!  Those stars must have been challenging to apply.  Can you imagine what the poor bloke who painted them on the original went through, expecially on the top wing?
Cheers,
Bud

I would guess that they took the wings off to do all those stars.

Post by: rhallinger on December 14, 2012, 02:54:36 AM
Thanks guys.  Although the Pheon instruction booklet is well detailed, it does not offer any informantion regarding how the stars were applied to the prototype.  I think Rowan had only a couple of photos of each aircraft to work from.

As for application to the model, the Pheon stars are indeed individual decals.  The color plan provided by Pheon is very helpful, although there is no guide for most of the bottom wing (except the portion not covered by the top wing) or the right side of the fuselage, which you are left to interpret, I suspect because the photos of the real thing do not show those surfaces.  Interestingly, the portion of the bottom wings shown in the color plan seem to suggest a greater density of stars on the lower wings than on the upper wing.  0:)

Although it seems like a big job, I found application of the individual stars to be quite relaxing and fun, as the surface came to life.  The secret was to not try to do too much at a single sitting.  I did the top wing in two sessions, then two more sessions for the bottom, and two sessions for the fuselage, with another for the tail surfaces.  These were probably 15-20 minute sessions, tops.  I would cut out about 4-6 stars in a strip, soak per instructions, and set with a small brush in a little MicroSol.  Once positioned where I wanted them, I then hit them with a warm hairdryer to snuggle them down.  Then back to the bench for another 4-6 stars, and repeat until I had whatever section I was working on finished.  A little tedious at times, but very rewarding!

Now . . . on to rigging the tail and struts, then adding the top wing before main rigging!

Regards,

Bob

  Bob,
Thanks for the tip concerning the stars.Once I return to modeling I think I'll just have to order these excellent decals from Rowan for one of my Pups too. Again outstanding work my old friend. I hope they're not as tedious as applying ribtapes.

Thanks Gregory!  I found the stars much easier than ribtapes to work with.  The small roundish shape is easier to maneuver off of the backing and on the surface.

It is really taking shape.  I love the scheme and may have to do this one as well, it would make a great companion to my Candy Stripe version.  It is certainly a striking scheme.

Thanks guys.  I agree: Rowan's Pup Pets & Trainers sheet is really outstanding, with several very neat schemes.  I really love the Candy Striper you did Mark, and would like to do that one, but I also like McCudden's night fighter too.  Actually, I like them all!  ;D  So many Pups, so little time.  ;)

More progress, slow but steady, and the end is in sight.  Here is the rigged tail:

. . . oooops!  Hit the post button by mistake.  Here are some more photos and a top wing teaser:

I still have details to add, including the night lights and Holt flares.  I forgot to photograph them, but they'll show up in the next round of photos.  I hope to have the rigging completed by the end of the week, then she'll be in the home stretch!

I'll solicit help while I have a chance.  The aileron control cables are a short run from the horn to the wing.  It would be difficult to rig with monofilament, because of the short run and because the cable goes directly into the wing without a buckle eyelet.  Something stiff but bendalble would be ideal.  Any suggestions?

Regards,

Bob

Thanks guys!  I found an effective solution tonight to the aileron control wire, while taking my wife shopping at the local Michael's Craft Store (a double win!).  I found a spool of 32 guage beading wire, very fine stuff, but stiff enough to stay firm when straightened.  Worked like a charm, already installed and painted!  I'll take pix for next time.

I like this scheme Bob:  How tedious was it to put the stars on the fuselage?  I am debating on whether or not I want to do this scheme or move on to an operational scheme.  I do like the schemes on this sheet though.  Yours is coming along quite nicely.

Thanks Mark.  This was my experience with applying the stars:

As for application to the model, the Pheon stars are indeed individual decals.  The color plan provided by Pheon is very helpful, although there is no guide for most of the bottom wing (except the portion not covered by the top wing) or the right side of the fuselage, which you are left to interpret, I suspect because the photos of the real thing do not show those surfaces.  Interestingly, the portion of the bottom wings shown in the color plan seem to suggest a greater density of stars on the lower wings than on the upper wing.  0:)

Not too tedious at all.  They go on quite easily, since they are small and essentially round.  If you like the scheme, have a go!

Bob

Time for another update.  Getting closer to done.  The rigging is nearly complete and the lights are installed, but I still need to do some weathering and add the holt flares on the bottom of the lower wingtips, as well as the landing gear.  Here are some photos:

As many of you already know, this is an excellent kit and fun to build.  I can honestly say I encountered no real problems, other than a few minor self-inflicted missteps.  If you have not built the kit yet, make sure you read Des's build log first.  It is very helpful and guided me through the bottom wing fit issue with no problem (i.e., making sure the parts are paint-free and sanded so the cockpit assembly does not interfere with the wing attachment to the fuselage.  I followed Des's advice and avoided any problem.

This is a great kit and I plan to build more Pups.  Pheon's trainer/pets sheet is a wonderful supplement to the WNW kit.  I highly recommend both!  Now . . . back to that Lloyd!

Regards,

Bob
