Mates, I am extremely happy to join this group build, I miss Des a lot and I want to dedicate this build to him.
I chose to have a double build based on the Pfalz DIII / DIIIa 1/48 kits I have.
The DIII kit is the old Eduard kit and it was a gift (very appreciated) from Rob Hart. He put in the box the man in the moon decals I will be using for this plane: Jasta 18 Hans Burckhard von Buttlar. Avelin, January 1918 (he changed his marking to the hunting horn in February). Rob was the one who pointed me to this forum in 2012 from the glorious Swanny's forum and this is also a way to finally thank him after a long time!
The DIIIa is a Blue Max kit, I have no idea yet of which livery it will have, I was thinking to the winged sword of Werner Hertel - jasta40, but I will examine the decals both kits provide and decide.
I guess some aftermarket will be needed seen the age of those kits....
At the moment I am taken by a non WW1 build and I should be able to complete it by the end of this month, so I will start my build(s) from March.
I'm going to post some pictures of the kits this evening.
Ciao

The Pfalz is a lovely aircraft and Eduards kit is not bad although it is not quite up to todays standards. I am sure you will do a great dual build.

Thanks for replying Rick...
You talk about the Eduard Kit... I will show the Blue Max one... a lot worst!
Antonio

Hallo guys,
here are the usual introductory photos, the two kits are very basic, the Eduard (1996) is better than the Blue Max which is much a lower quality.
Here we go:

There is no instruction sheet, only this "certificate"

This is the version I will make for the Eduard kit
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-019.jpg)
Still don't know about the other... both have the winged sword of Rudolf Berthold, I would prefer to have a different colour schema.
As I said I was thinking to the winged sword of Werner Hertel - jasta40 is anyone willing to get rid of his winged sword (in 48th)?
I also thought to use the Alfred Lenz Jasta 22 decals from the Eduard kit to make a silver plane, but it is a D III while the Blue Max kit is a D IIIa...
Open to suggetsions, I have time before I start.

Hi Antonio, not one but two builds! And of a really beautiful aircraft - just love it! Also very interesting to see you tackle a Blue Max kit - these were quite state - of - the - art in their day, but have been surpassed for sure - but still very worth building! And very interesting for us as we follow along!
Regards,
Marc
-
The Pfalz DIII were the most elegant of the fighters, and here are two on their way. Graet choice, good luck with the build.
Ciao
Giuseppe

Antonio,
Outstanding choices my old friend. I've no doubt your Pfalz's will absolutely beautiful. The best of luck to you.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Wow, I missed the Blue Max entry for some reason. You are a Brave soul tackling that Blue Max kit. I am sure you will do it up right!
RAGIII
-
Thanks everybody, your kind words are encouraging!
I have found in my decals box some Decals of the different Carlos Meyer Baldo planes (see picture attached), I bought them because I like the drooling bulldog markings.
He was using a DIIIa in Jasta 4, and it's a silver livery with the black spiral band wrapping the fuselage.
I chose this as second livery.
There are other different interpretations of this livery but I dedicde to follow the one proposed by the Aztec leaf.
Should anyone have different information please let me know!
Antonio
-
The Jasta 4 scheme should look terrific! Looking forward to your build even more now!
RAGIII
-
Oh, that builds are a heavy task! Even the Eduard is one of the first kits of that company after starting with accessories.
The later new tool D.IIIa kit is a real gem, I build it already twice. It is now also some years old, but still a great kit on a very high level compared to the latest kits.
There were also a variant with a new sprue containing D.III fuselages (I own a Limited Edition dual combo), but it was later no more available up to now. May be the tool is damaged. In opposite the D.IIIa was released very often as Profipack and Weekend.
My deep respect to try to build those old beasts. (Me would drop it to bin and buy one of the new releases.)
Cheers,
Frank
-
You all are right guys, the kits are outdated and have a poor overall quality, I would give Eduard a 6/10 mark and 4/10 to the Blue Max, but I have those boxes in my stash and don't want to spend more money purchasing new tools.
-
Hallo friends,
here are some aftermarket stuff I purchased before starting the real work. I am now ready to weigh anchor.
I got the Black Dog detail kit, essentially because I needed the exhaust, but I will evaluate if the other parts are worth to be used on the DIIIa Blue Max
Gaspatch Spandaus for the DIIIa

Yes Monty, I also have purchased a couple of jars of GERMAN PFALZ SILBERGRAU MISTER KIT GC17 for the DIIIa.
I am a bit worried by the black spiral, but will manage it in some way.

The spiral isn't easy but not as hard as most think. I am attaching a link to my old build of the WNW kit. The only thing I would do differently now is use Tamiya tape for curves. The old tape was much more difficult to get around curves. Best of luck on your effort and I hope this helps!

Hallo everybody, I did not forget this GB, I continue to nibble at the other life few hours now and then...
Here are some pics I took from time to time:
The BLUE MAX fuselage has a very thick wall, and it's really uneven. I decided to keep it as it is, just had to remove that weird bun inside the nose.
The right half shows the horrible clump, on the left one it has been already removed.
Decisions had to be taken on the engines:
This photo shows the BLUE MAX engine and some resin details from the BLACK DOG set.
I decided to use these pieces plus a couple of pieces from the EDUARD kit.
Here you see the full PAVLA engine plus the details. I will use it for the EDUARD kit and will use the exhaust tube from the kit (light grey piece here).
The exhaust of the BLACK DOG set has a hole on the tip of the tube (left) the EDUARD one (right) was full and I had to dig a bit in it.
I decided to build the interiors structure of the cockpit in both the planes, also because there is nothing in any of the kits.
So I found a schema, reduced it to 1/48 and am using it to rebuild the internal frames piece to piece
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-032.jpg)
Thisis the BLUE MAX fuselage, I had to glue some plasticard to hold the plan where the engine will stay and traced the position of frames G (behind the seat) and D (behind the engine)
Same for the EDUARD fuselage, here they casted the vertical and horizontal frames, I had to file them off but tried to leave at least the tace of their positions that, according to my documentation, is fair enough acceptable.
Here are pieces D and G for both the kit, they were cut from a 0,5 mm plasticard sheet and filed until they allowed the two alves to lock.
The BLUE MAX are totally different from the original drawings, the EDUARD pieces are fully compatible, I just had to file away a few plastic from the external edges (I guess because of the thickness of the molded plastic)
The wooden plan holding the engine: the EDUARD piece and a piece built by me, the BLUE MAX kit did not supply any piece to hold the engine.
Here is a dry fit of the engine with the related pieces.
I drilled the two air intakes that are on the plane cheeks, both the kit have them "close"
Here is where I am at today: Engine and bearer painted and glued.
That's all for today!!!!
Thanks for watching

You are doing some outstanding work on these two builds Antonio! Your engine and exhausts are coming out quite nicely. The bulkheads and formers are turning out great and I am looking forward to seeing the completed interior structures!

Antonio, you are doing an excellent work with making two old kits into good models. I'm looking forward to your next progress int this double build.

Thanks Rick and Giuseppe for stopping by and commenting...
I'm going on with cockpit "wood"work
-
Very interesting Andonio!
I have two PFALZ too, so I fallow your post with very high interest!
The blue max seems to be nicer at the end, but both are very acceptable...
Xan
-
Thank you Xan, the BM fuselage has good and crisp details on the external but inside is really a tragedy! It has a very limited number of pieces.
The engine is fair enough but it's too small in my opinion, and its details are cast in white metal which I don't like at all.
The Eduard is good, well finished and has all the pieces you need to have a good build, the engine is very similar to the BM but at a slightly lower level, that's why I took the pavla resin engine which is really good.
As far as the cockpit details are concerned, both the kits are inadequate.
That's a kind of challenge I like, although it slows further my slowness! :-O

Hallo guys, I have a small update: the restoration of the cockpits goes on, here are a couple of pics that show the state of the art.
BLUE MAX DIIIa

In both cases I had to file out some pieces of the engine to let it fit into the fuselage...
I hope to sit longer at the bench during the weekend...
Thanks for watching

Thanks Rick and Terri, I'm working at the moment on completing the internal framework of the DIIIa
-
Andonio I have missed this until now - (as I have missed many others!). Is this a restoration job or just a reclaimation of two decent models from not very promising starts? Looking at these I am pleased that I only scratch build - it is easier!!
Both are looking very good and as usual two very fine models are now in the making - albeit with only a little help from the manufacturers.
Stephen.
-
Thank you Stephen for stopping by and commenting.
Yes I had these two kits in my stash and decided to turn them into models, as far as the Blue Max one is concerned it appears just like a plastic "suggestion", then it's up to the builder to achieve something acceptable.
The Eduard one is a kit I am fond of, it was a donation of Rob Hart (from Swanny's) who was the one suggesting me to contact Des and join this beautiful forum.
That's why I decided to dedicate it to Des' memory.
The Eduard kit is indeed a "baseline" kit, but it is a good quality and moreover leaves much less than the Blue Max one to the builder goodwill!
Antonio
-
You have opted for a hard job on these... So much different from WNW :)
Very fine work all around, looking forward to see more of it.
-
Thank you Przemol, I have nearly completed the cockpit elements of the DIIIa (BM) yesterday I started moving on with the DIII (ED) cockpit interiors, much easier.
I have not done yet photos, will make them together when both the cockpits will be at the same stage.
Antonio

Hallo friends, I apologize for not being able to participate more in the forum, by the way I managed to steal to real life some half hours here and there and take my project forward, I still follow all the magnificent build threads going on here and of course I feel like an ant in front of elephants!
:-)
Here is the current state of things: I primed the two fuselage halves, and built and painted most of the elements that will go inside the two birds:
EDUARD
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-046.jpg)
BLUE MAX
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-047.jpg)
To paint the interiors (and some of the cockpit elements) I did not use the XF 76 as indicated on the WNW instructions (I couldn't find it from my local shop, so I mixed
Lifecolor UA 074 (Light blue RLM 76) with a couple of drops of Lifecolor UA 004 (Interior Green) and this is the result, I am satisfied with it.
Then I went on to the cockpit elements:
EDUARD
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-048.jpg)
Here I scratch built only the compass (just right of the ammo magazine) and the seat cushion (made with DAS and 5 tiny plasticard discs)
BLUE MAX
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-049.jpg)
Here everything is built from scratch but the control stick (provided by the kit in white metal, not bad).
I also found the seat in my spare box and made the cushion using halves of plasticard round rods.
Thanks for watching dear friends, I hope next update will be in a shorter time!!!!

Happy to find you here! I'm looking that you became better and better in building WWI kits. And you choose not two simple tasks!
So I'm seated looking at your work, beautiful.
In the attachments a suggestion for your D.IIIa, if you are scared by the black spiral typical of Jasta 4. (I NEVER try this kind of decoration on my kits!)
Cheers!

Hi Roberto,
thanks for your suggestion, very interesting indeed, but to be honest I am more scared by the lozenge on the wings than by the black spiral !!!!!
:-D
Thanks for your appreciation of my progresses, I just manage to steal a few minutes here and there to real life and don't bother too much about improvements, I think to some extent they come as a natural evolution, but I keep doing the same errors and keep old (sometimes bad) habits... I am satisfied all in all, modeling helps emptying my head of many things and enjoy the time I succeed in dedicating to it...

unfortunately, due to recurring real life troubles, I was not able to proceed in any way on this job since last posting, I will take it to the end but can't predict a completion date.
For the GB deadline I won't make it, so I ask Dave (or whoever is in charge of this) to move the thread to the "Under Construction" section.

Thank you Stephen, I have closed both the fuselages, I am working now on the lower wings of the Blue Max.
This is the lower left wing as found in the box

A detail oft the surface:

Here is the lower right wing as I started smoothing it:
Here is the lower surfaces of both the lower wings:
Moreover, here they are compared with the Pfalz D IIIa at war vol.1 schemas (I hope I am not infringing any copyright)
The wings ave a wrong profile at their tips and I am shaping it better, but they also appear to be larger but I won't dare filing that excess...
Thanks for watching.

Thanks Terri!
Here are the lower wings of the Blue Max (DIIIa) slightly improved on the shape:
Here are the finished wings: I smoothed the surface and used some plasticard strips (Thickness 0.25 mm, width 1 mm on bottom surfaces and 0.75 mm on top).
The white details are scratch built by me.
The center section in the BM kit is separated from the wings and I will use pins to get them together, the Eduard kit is better having cast the bottom wings in a unique piece.

Thanks Rick & Terri.
Sunday evening I put pins into the central part of the lower wing and pierced 4 holes in the two lower wings.
Next step is to drill holes in the wings (both upper and lower for both the kits) where to place the rigging or the eyelets.
-
Hallo friends, Merry Christmas to everybody!
I went on with the build and while checking the fit of the struts on the lower wings I decided to make from scratch the two struts of the Blue Max...
Here you can see:
No.1 - one strut of the Eduard kit

I'm very late to reply or your latest update , my apologizes . I really like how your scratched struts turned out . I'm not a fan on white metal struts . No flex , they just bend . ( My Bluemax kit has white metal struts ) . On the Eduard kit do you plane on changing the angel of the mounting holes on the wings ? ( it aids I found out when I built multiple Pfalz D.IIIa ) .

Hallo Terri,
this time it's me to be late! I was not home until yesterday night and usually I don't use my phone to manage my accounts...
While the white metal parts are good for details such as machine guns they are totally unsuitable for long pieces that need to bear some tension such as struts, undercarriage...
So I will make from scratch also the other pieces of the BM kit (undercarriage and cabane).
I did not understand what did you mean when you say to change the angle of mounting holes in the wings of the Eduard kit.
The lower wings are cast together along with the center piece (say the floor of the cockpit) and the upper wings are one piece as well, so they don't have mounting holes...
Are you talking about the holes where the struts should fit?
Please help me understand, maybe there's a problem in the Eduard kit I haven't discovered yet!
I take the occasion to send my warmest wishes of a beautiful 2020 to everybody!!!
Antonio
-
Hi Stephen , yes the mounting holes for the struts . The holes are cast so the struts stand straight up . The inter struts are set at an outward angle . By re-drilling the holes to meet that angle of the strut you will get a better fit . I have built 6 Eduard kits and did this with all builds , worked like a charm .
-
Thanks Terri I'll keep this in mind. Will have a thought on this.

Hallo Guys and Dolls,
after more than 5 months from my last post here I am again with my pfalz duo build.
Apart from covid and lockdown this year has brought with it other major and minor bad things... one will be probably over this early afternoon, in the meantime here and there I found some time crumbles to go a bit ahead, but the progresses were not meaningful and not always deserving a picture!
I have some new pics that I will post immediately after this re-opening post, in the meantime I ask Dave to move this thread into the "Under Construction section, if possible.
If not I will keep posting here.
Thanks
Antonio

As I had done for the interwing struts of the Blue Max DIIIa, I made from scratch the cabane struts of the same plane, as the other struts they came in white metal which is difficult to polish and to handle and has an uneven surface I don't like.
Here you can see, for comparison sake:
No.1 - one strut of the Eduard kit
No.3 - the Blue Max strut in white metal
No.4 - the "raw" piece I cut from a plasticard sheet 1 mm thick before being worked
No.2 - the first self made strut ready
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-069.jpg)
Here are the two struts ready, you can see the great flex-i-file tool I use a lot in these cases
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-070.jpg)
I had closed and sealed with putty the two fuselages:
And I took care of the tail of the Blue Max, from the Black Dog resin kit I had purchased.
Holes pierced in the fuselage:
Pins inserted in the horizontal planes
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-074.jpg)
And this is how it looks all together onto the plane...
There is a gap due to the thickness of the Blue Max rear end, although the tail planes are not fully on their place and the gap should show less once glued all together, I think I will file a little the left stabilizer.
I also painted and assembled the 2 Machine guns (Gaspatch), will post later a photo of them.
I drilled two long slots in front of the cockpit to let the 2 Spandaus fit.
Thanks for watching and I hope to show something new soon!!!!

Hi again,
another information I wanted to share with you is that as far as the Blue Max DIIIa livery is concerned, looking around to take again over this build I saw Brad Cancian's beutiful “Müller’s Raben”
(have a look here: https://www.aussiemodeller.com.au/pages/Gallery/Aircraft_A-D/Cancian_PfalzDIIIA.html (https://www.aussiemodeller.com.au/pages/Gallery/Aircraft_A-D/Cancian_PfalzDIIIA.html))
and this took to my mind that I have purchased years ago the Pheon Decals sheet: Jasta 18 Volume Two "Raben’s Ravens"
So I decided to make that version.
The Eduard kit wil stay as the Man in the moon with pipe of Hans Burckhard von Buttlar, a duo of Jasta 18 pilots!
-
Nice to see these ones back on the bench , both are coming along really well so far :) :) :)
Terri
-
Great to see you going on these two again! The two fuselages look amazing glued together. With a bit of work on that left side I am sure you will nail the tail plane and elevator! I am looking forward to your progress!

Thanks Terri & Rick!

Sorry to be slow finding this Andonio - it has popped up out of the blue!
Good to see that you are working on these again. The fuselages and your new struts are very impressive - the struts in particular are a huge improvement on the kit parts. I am looking forward to following these to completion - even if you have to take your time to do so.
Stephen.

Glad to see updates on this, you are doing really well on these old kits.

Hallo friends,
here are some new tiny steps from the longest build in the world (source: Guinness World Record), I went on with preparing the tail planes of the DIIa (Blue Max):
I also filed the moving horizontal plan to make it match better the fixed plans:
Here is a group photo of all the resin pieces making up the tail of the DIIIa with control horns scratch made:
Here is the Horizontal plan of the DIII (Eduard): it's a unique piece and I decided to leave it as it is
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-081.jpg)
Same story for the vertical plans, I just added more evident hinges:

Nice work on the control horns. You are making progress!
RAGIII

Thanks Rick,
yes I am making slow progresses and wait to have a meaningful set of photos before publishing something...
Antonio

Your additional details will really dress up the basic kit.

It may be taking a long time Andonio, but it is still a high quality model that you are making.
As for the record for making a model - I had two which took over 30 years to complete....!
Stephen.

here are some new tiny steps from the longest build in the world (source: Guinness World Record)
Antonio, as long there is a progress and - the most important thing - you have fun, all is okay ;)
Cheers,
Frank
PS: Speed is measured in Angstrom per week ;D
-
Thanks guys for your support, I am at the workbench now, I just added to the Blue Max the Machine Guns belt feed and unload things (what's their name?) and turned the tail skid of the same kit from a lump of plastic into something more acceptable, I think this evening will go on and then share some new photos.
I moved a couple of Ångström further! ;D ;D ;D
Yes, even at this low speed I am having fun! ;)
-
Enjoying yourself doing this is IMHO the most important... I've had models I stopped working on after settling some issues, that still aren't finished, but I still had fun doing that, even if there is no final end result. I suppose my mindset is a bit different in that regard :)
Nice progress and improvements on some tough kits!
-
Nice wrok on the control horns :)
Terri
-
Thanks Jeroen and Terri...
I worked a bit on the kits (mainly on the BM) and here I can show the tail skid restored and detailed:
The red mark shows the point where I'll cut the white bar used at the moment to handle the piece.
And the things to drive the ammunition belt to and from the MGs
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-087.jpg)
I also joined the three parts of the BM lower wing, now I am completing some detail on the Eduard's lower wing and will glue them to the fuselages.
I started caring of the BM upper wings, I scribed the ailerons to make them more visible, then the right half wing fell to the floor and the aileron broke in 2 pieces (the plastic is very brittle) detaching from the wing.
I did not want to detach the ailerons from the wings but now to repair the right one I decided to take them off:
That's all for today
Thanks for watching!
Antonio

Very nice work, Antonio!

Tail skid looks good as well as the ammo feeds , well done Andonio :)

Thank you Gazza, Terri and Rick, new photos are coming...
The birds have some wings now.
As soon as the putty will dry I will file it and publish some more photo.
Then I worked on the radiator shutter on both the models:
BLUE MAX
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-090.jpg)
EDUARD
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-092.jpg)
Here I used just the PE rectangle because the handle was horribly flat, to give it some thickness and insert a 3Dish handle, I inserted a flat piece of plasticard and made a hole.
I also had to raise the two side rails to "let the slider slide".
In both cases I made a ring where the handles slide as seen in many photos on my references.
Thanks again for your attention!
Antonio

Excellent work on the shutter handle!

Hallo,
I went a little forward on this build thread:
I scratched the mechanisms that control ailerons on top of the upper wing. I used a plasticard rod (side = 0,75 mm) and cut 2 circles from a plasticard tube using the razorblade saw with 3 blades and 2 x 0,75 mm spacers.
Oops, I don't see the picture and I can't see all the other pictures of my thread...
Any idea?

It has something to do with Google Chrome and your server. Ask Mike Norris as he had the same issue. I went to Microsoft Edge and the photos show! Nicely done!
RAGIII

Thank you so much Rick, I have sent a PM to Mike to get some advice.
I also worked on the Blue Max DIIIa top wing:
I filed out the horrible "rib tapes" (here is how they were, I forced the contrast to let them show):
made pin holes and put metal pins in the 5 pieces making up the wing
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-095.jpg)
Here are the pieces joined, just without glue, they will need some putty and probably some thin plasticard piece where the half round opening of the cabane joins the trailing edge
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-096.jpg)

Hi!
The most elderly among you may remember this thread starded when pandemic was not even a known term for most of us...
It was February 2019!
Last post was in the fall of 2020, since then, as I wrote preiously, a lot of bad things happened to me and my wife and we are still in troubled waters although a light shines at the horizon!
By the way I find some time to go on with the works every now and then and here is the result achieved so far which is meaningful enough to be documented:

It is Great to see progress on these two Antonio! Both are looking fantastic and I love the colorful schemes! Well done update!
RAGIII
-
Thank you Rick, I am glad as well for having something to show!
I like the propellers, although I would have preferred to coat them with clear yellow but it was totally dry and I had no chance to get another fresh jar in short times so coated them in orange.
I also applied some decals of the brands.
The DIII is a plastic prop, the DIIIa is a white metal, both from the box.
I made an error: I primed the DIII with white primer and the DIIIa with gray primer, I had to do the other way round, but in the end the gray primer made off white look a bit more "off" and red a bit darker and the white coat made blue and red look a bit brighter on the DIII and in th end I like the final tones I achieved.

I too am pleased to see that these are still being helped along. The paint finishes are really good, and the extra details that you are adding to the skids and undercarriage and really enhancing these models. They will be two worthy examples in your display cabinet when they are finished.
Glad to read that you can at last see a light at the end of the tunnel: life has been very difficult for very many people recently.

Hallo everybody,
here is a short update after positioning 34 eyelets on the two models:
The two cousins with the fuselage decals, the starboard "man in the moon" didn't slide well from the support cardboard and ripped in several points, but I touched it up and it became acceptable.
Both "man in the moon" decals show some silvering in the transparent areas.
Close up of the DIII showing the exhaust, windscreen and the tubes that will come out of the gravity tank under the top wing
(http://www.andonio.it/model/pfalz_duo/pfalz_duo-111.jpg)
Same for the DIIIa with the 2 MGs and the curved tube to receive the tube coming out of the radiator beneath the top wing.
Now it's time to put the top wing up and I prepared some transparente acetate mock ups to position the inter wing struts.
Thanks for watching!

Many thanks Stephen and Richie...
I just glued the cabane struts on the DIII and realized the interwing struts are too short to match the pin holes on the lower surface of the top wing!
I am getting crazy thinking to any solution that is not re making them from scratch!
Any idea?

Crikey!
The work on your Pfalz's including the painting look superb. I can see these being stunners when finally built.

I'm puzzled by this that you find the interstruts short .
How short are they and are they on both aircraft ?
Knowing how short they are by will aid in my reply on the shortness solution .
Alexis
-
Thank you Alexis, this evening I will try to measure the gap
-
Hi everybody, hi Alexis,
I measured visually the gap betweeen the top of the wing struts and the bottom surface of the top wing and it was about 1 mm and a half.
I decided to cut away the pins from the top horizontal part of the cabane struts and glued the wing on top of them.
I had still to force a bit with some weight but now it seems the wing is in a correct position, see picture:
I guess I'll have the same problem with the DIIIa, I'll make more tries.
Thanks for helping
Antonio
-
If the struts are not too short, you may consider redrilling the mounting holes on one wing or the other so the strut angle (as viewed from the front) is not so great (more vertical). This may be an acceptable solution.
-
Thanks Kensar, I had the same thought, but I have already glued the eyelets for rigging and doing all that work again (plus repainting of course) is a far too long way seen the time I have to sit at the bench and the time this bbuild has taken so far!!!!
Antonio
-
The previous photo was taken this morning.
I took the weights away and everything went to its place (or at least to an acceptable place).
The ensemble is stiff enough and I put in place the tubes coming out of the radiator and the gravity tank.
Now I will go on to rigging.
Thanks for commenting and for your support!
Antonio
-
I would have suggested making struts from strip, but you seem to have solved the problem in the second way I would have suggested - use a biit of weight and show the model who is boss!!
So pleased that you have the struts in place - they are usually the most tricky problem wen I am scratch building so I know how you must have been feeling.
Stephen.
-
Thank you Stephen, as a matter of fact I had already remade the struts from scratch and my second option was your first one!
:-)
To me this is still the most dreadful moment in building a biplane, no fear for rigging but a lot of thinking for placing the struts and the top wing.
Maybe because as I build in 48th I have on the average low quality kits and there are often precision problems.
Thanks again everybody and good night
Antonio

Glad to hear that it all work out for you :)

Happy to see you got the wing to line up and attach to the struts. Looks great as a Bi plane!
