Great War aircraft at The Museum Of Flight, Seattle, WA, USA
« on: October 07, 2023, 08:07:54 AM »
Hi all,
The Museum of Flight is home to the former Doug Champlin collection of Great War aircraft - originals and replicas - and on a recent visit I tried to get photos of them all. Unfortunately we were pressed for time so I didn't get the chance to note what was real and what wasn't, I trust others on the forum can help with that (although in some cases replicas are pretty obvious!). I've separated them into "teams" but they appear in the order one encounters them walking through the gallery.

And what I expect is a star of the collection, an original 1914 Caproni Ca.20. This is actually the first aircraft you see once you're in the gallery proper (the D.VIII and Snipe hang over the staircase you walk up) but I thought I'd save it for last.

It's a great museum. The Caproni & the Aviatik make it worth the trip; the Albatros replica should be burned though imo ;) Actually the large scale model next to it is much more interesting and accurate (imo). The Pfalz D.XII was all in one piece when I was there several years ago; interesting oppo to study it in its dismantled state.

There's also a nice Taube replica hanging from the ceiling in the "grand display" room -- along with a lot of other interesting stuff.

Thanks for sharing...

As for what's real:

Pfalz D.XII
Aviatik D.I
Jenny
Caproni
N.28

The rest are replicas.

uncletony has it right. I was a volunteer plane polisher and Saturday docent at Falcon Field back in the 80s and if memory serves his list is correct.
Bruno: "How many rules are there?"

Willi: "I don't know... none of zem have ever been written down."

Beautiful aeroplanes, and beautiful photos, thanks, Zac!

I'll take the Berg, to go...

Thanks for the IDs Bo and Vickers, much appreciated!

The Pfalz D.XII was all in one piece when I was there several years ago; interesting oppo to study it in its dismantled state.
There was a lovely display board explaining the missing bits but unfortunately I didn't take a photo, nor do I remember much about what was on there but I believe they're being re-covered.

I'm afraid I didn't take a picture of the Taube! But I did get the Wright glider...and the Taube engine!
