This is going to be a huge plane..! Drawings from Albatros productions, enlarged from 1/48 to 1/18 scale.
Working on the research now.

What a treat awaits us. Excellent choice and great engine to start off.

WOW UFAG! That's a quite ambitious project!
I will follow it closely.
It seems there's an Aviatik DI craze lately on the forum!

As most of you already know, I scratch build an Avitik DI in 1/48 many years ago, learning a lot along the way.
eg, I super glued the brass parts in stead of soldering..!!
In the larger 1/18th scale, I will be able to fine tune the details ( and more detail), and have more materials to my disposal.
Now, somewhere hidden, deep in some hide out, I do have copies of the Original building drawings, obtained from the Technische Museum in Vienna.
I will be looking for them as we speak..!
-
Found them, but hidden behind a big stack of model kits, will leave that till tomorrow.
Found also another reference.

Thanks for sharing this one. It`s sooo beyond my skills.

yes! i do agree with xmald! but I am sure i’ll learn something
can’t wait to see more!

This is a different type of scratch building to wat I am used to! Will be following with great interest.
Stephen..

Do I understand it right: you take the kit for engine and co and enhance it to a complete biplane? Sounds great!
Good luck!
Cheers,
Frank

Thanks gents..!!
Still preparing and collecting data for the build.
Working on a "handmade example" of the ribs.
Emphasis on handmade, virtually impossible to make 70 ribs ( including spare ) in this scale and make it look good.
Been working with adobe illustrator, and the lot is now with a laser cutting company, will have the first test tomorrow.
Supposed to be much neater then the handmade. ( though still working on it )

Agree with Rick, interesting comparison/preview in a smaller scale, both beautiful.

Fantastic!
Can you give some more information on resizing a PE fret? Looks like a very Fine idea that I would Love to try out elsewhere ...
Best regards
Andreas
-
(https://i.imgur.com/18aNEOb.jpg)
Step one...!!
-
Andreas, the photo of the PE fret maybe deceptive..!
What you're looking at is the actual fret (1/32) and just a paper copy of the PE fret in 1/18...!!
Now, I do not have the means to photoetch (yet), I will have to fabricate the hardware myself out of brass and alu sheet.
Regards, Martin
-
(https://i.imgur.com/Fbzob1G.jpg)
And many more steps to go....
-
The wood I use is a little bit off scale ( slightly larger ), thinner/finer wood could make the structure too fragile...there is still some bending to do later on..

The hatch cove is a work of art in itself. Building in wood and metal is so different to plastic and other materials: I take my hat off to a true master modeller.
Stephen.

On hindsight, the wood I used for the basic frame, is not that quite good on quality.
It is too brittle, I will have to do some work on that one. On the other hand, not that much will be shown once ( partially ) covered.

Great work on all that wooden parts!
If I have to decide between a 3D-printer and a Laser cutter able to cut wood veneer I would prefer the Laser ;)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Frank, that would be a treat, a laser cutter, unfortunately,
I don't have one, all parts are cut painstakingly by hand and hobby knife.
The only laser cut part here is the instrument panel, made bij HPH. The panel proofs to be 14% too small in size, so have to cut that one aswell..!!
Cheers..!! ( a lathe is next on my list though..!)

That is just incredible. To cut the wood to such accuracy with a knife takes real skill - my hat off to you sir!

Confession ; the size of the instruments are slightly off in size ( fractions of mm), I had to adapt a little bit, I was restricted by the size of the brass rods available, used for the housing of the instruments. :-[

Such detail....and I do not see any problem with the rudder bar either.
Stephen.
-
Okay, somewhere on the forum ( I do not no anymore who, where and the subject involved), a topic about covering the prop blade tip with metal, it was a four blade prop, that I do recall.
Anyhow, it inspired me to try something my self.
I used alu sheet - 0,11 mm - ( used by book printers way back in the past).
I annealed it with a torch for a very short time ( other wise the alu will melt).
Cut to shape, glued on with epoxy and let it dry for a while.
Fine sanding completed the process, rivet with a fine needle ( this was done in a hurry, no fine sequence)
After annealing, the alu is very malleable.

Just could not resist. I took the 1/24 scale HB DI out of storage and is showcasing above my work table. I still consider it my best efford up till now.
Will do my best to build the Aviatik DI equally or a little better. Many of the techniques I used on this model, is reflected in the build of the Aviatik.
Now to continue with the flight controles...

Thanks gents...!!
@Terri, I considered the option, but the wire does lack the elasticity required to keep it tight.
I experienced it on the hasegawa 1/8 sopwith camel, took "years" to install all the wiring, and in no time the wires lost tension, moving the stick and the ailerons/rudder/elevator hardly moved.
So, no....controles will be fixed.

Have you heard it? It was my jaw dropping on the floor :o :o :o
-
Fellow builders,
Y'all haven't heard from me quite a while.
I do have just one excuse....I mandatorily retired from commercial flying as from 1st of january, just because I became 65 years of age..!!
This is a worldwide requirement. Unfortunately, I still could have done some years of flying, my medical en simulator tests were up to the requirements.
Anyway, no turning back, my last flight with the dreamliner B787-8 from Curacao/dutch antilles to Amsterdam at the 27th of december was business as usual.
I got the fire brigade salute at Curacao, not permited anymore at Schiphol/Amsterdam.
Whats next..?? Well, more time for the aviatik build...!!
And not out of flying completely, will continue as a Type Rating Instructor on the 787 sim at Amsterdam and Boeing in London. But this is not full time.
Will get my Single Engine Piston ( SEP) back, and will do some banner towing in a Piper cub this summer, really looking forward to that, back to the basic's..!!
Last, but not least, enjoy my family and the little dachshund, who joined us last week.
-

Martin,
Congratulations on your retirement and I hope it proves to be both rewarding and enjoyable. Take it from me, you'll miss the joys of flying as I do but when it's time ......... it's time! The transition from a 787 to a J3 will probably prove a very pleasant experience, enjoy and I look forward to seeing many more Builds from you now!
All the "Very Best",
Lance

As long as you can retain your single prop licence you have a gateway to the clouds and to the freedom that comes from flying. ;) Lucky you!
Good luck in your retirement.
Cheers,
