This build is for publication so I won't be posting many updates until it's done and in print but I just had to show off the interior woodwork that was completed tonight. Oils over Tamiya base using different shades of both for variety. A thin mix of Tamiya Orange and Yellow clears was lightly sprayed over everything to replicate a varnished look. Still have plenty of detail work to do though so these won't be assembled any time soon.

Beautiful work Eric, the wood is perfect, but what about the leather (which is perfect as well!) ?
I am not yet satisfied with any of the colours I have to paint leather parts, which colors / method did you use on this?
-
Looking great Eric! Your woodwork is excellent.

Thank you all for those very kind words!
Andonio64, for the leather I use a technique described by Spencer Pollard which I found on Hyperscale years ago:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a method that figure painters, myself included have used to paint leather of different kinds over the years...
1. Paint the area to be 'leather' using matt black. Enamel such as Humbrol works best for this, though you can also use an acrylic such as Tamiya. Leave to dry out thoroughly.
2. Grab some oil paints. You'll need Raw Umber, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre.
3. Using a soft, flat brush dry brush the surface of the piece using small amounts of the Raw Umber oil paint used NEAT. Don't thin it...
4. With the Raw Umber in place, you'll see that the piece, especially if detailed, will have a gentle sheen over its raised surface, with dark, matt areas in the recesses - exactly as you see on really leather. You also see that the leather is nice and dark - again a feature of this material.
5. Happy with your base coat, you can now add some warmth by working in some other colours such as the more red Raw Sienna or Burnt Sienna shades. Work in small dots of colours using a fine brush and then blend the dots into the surface of the piece that you're working on. This will result in a more worn surface that exhibits different shades that reflect worn patches.
6. Highlights can now be added using the Yellow Ochre, this colour being perfect to simulate 'raw' leather, where the surface has broken down. You can also use this to add highlights along edges and also scuffs and scrapes - all of which help increase the realism of the finished part. At this point you can also add to the shading around seams and the like using a mix of Raw Umber and the Matt Black enamel that you used earlier.
The result of all of this will be a multi-toned part that has areas of dark, matt shadows and warm, glossy highlights - just as you would find on any leather item - be it a soldier's boot or an ornate sofa!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Cheers,
Eric

Interesting, I will give this a try. Thanks Eric!

I just finished the guts tonight. Bit of a shame to have to stuff all this inside the fuselage but fortunately most of it will still be visible.

I've started tinkering with the CDL undersides on the control surfaces. I'm using the same technique Des describes in his W.29 build blog - Gunze Radome base, Off White ribs, shading using a 4B lead pencil blended with finger and a rubber blender, then overcoated with another thin coat of Radome. The bottom aileron has the pencil shading and overcoat whereas the top is just the tan base and white ribs. The photo flash washes out the shading a bit but you get the idea.

A few random shots showing the current state of things. Note the engine is now missing from the fuselage. I fumbled the fuselage and while it only fell onto the table top it was enough of a shock to knock the engine loose. Very little damage occurred but I felt it best to leave said engine off until later in the build to avoid further incidents.

Thank you Marc, I wish I could share even more info but this build is destined for publication so I have to keep some stuff to myself for the time being. Eventually I'll be able to share additional details but for now I just like to post occasional update photos to get some feedback and to make sure I'm going in the right direction. :)

Lance,
Thank you! I used Gunze Mr Color 335 Medium Sea Gray for the fuselage. It is interesting to see the variety of colors used on various builds of both the W.12 and W.29. I agonized a bit over the choice of paint but in the end realized no one knows the exact color for certain. The instruction's color guide lists Humbrol 165 as one of the options for the fuselage and as I'm a big fan of the Mr Color paints, I went with their version as identified in a Humbrol cross reference chart.
http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_humbrol.htm
Oh, BTW, for the fuselage and float undersides I just used Tamiya XF-19 as indicated in the instructions.
HTH,
Eric
-
Thanks Eric, very helpful! I don't have a source for Gunze paints but a cross reference with possibly a little mixing will work...... and I agree, no one really knows for sure!
Cheers,

Very fine progress, Eric. Are you planning to address the question of those unusual buldged cockpit doors on 1414?
Thank you Prze! Hehe...no, for a couple reasons. I noticed you tackled those in your excellent build (the photos of which I've been using as references) but decided to make the assumption Pheon mentions that the mysterious bulged door modification was probably made in the field and so would originally have had the conventional doors. To that end, along with the regular doors, mine will be portrayed with grey floats and minimal weathering as befitting a newly delivered aircraft. Also, since this is being built for Airfix Model World I wanted to keep time-consuming modifications to a minimum. It take me long enough to get something built as it is. :)
Eric
-
Very clear, Eric. ;) Yours is a fair assumption. Keep it up with your fine build, a pleasure to follow!

Some CDL work. The wing on the left has had the ribs masked around and painted white followed by a light overspray of well thinned tan (Gunze Radome). The right wing will receive that treatment next followed by the really long upper wing! The latter will be quite tedious to mask. Yes, some of this work will be covered by the white panels for the underside crosses but I wanted to start with an even appearance.

Work continues. The instructions called for the radiator pipe to be painted grey but I exercised some artistic license and made it bare copper which I think looks more interesting.

Well, I believe the lower wing undersides are done to my satisfaction. I didn't want a pristine look but also wanted to avoid an overly grubby appearance. Staining was added using AK Streaking Grime and a dark brown oil wash with excess removed using a wide brush dipped in AK thinner. So, what do you guys think?

Cheers,

Thank you Lance. Ah yes...the floats. Their lozenge decals were definitely a challenge. First, I cut each in three sections as indicated on the decal sheet. Each section was applied using the traditional Micro Set/Sol method as well as heat from a hair dryer. All that was not enough to get the decals settled around the raised ridges so a scalpel was used to slice the decal along each ridge after which several applications of Micro Sol finally got everything settled down. Unfortunately, the slicing also resulted in numerous open and damaged areas in the decals which were touched up with paint after the decals had thoroughly dried. Gloss clear, a light oil weathering wash, and a final flat coated blended everything together.
Eric
-
Fantastic work, those decal surely look that part :)

Thanks for the detailed info Eric. I've never used the hair dryer trick but from what I've read here and in the other Build Logs it's going to be required for these tricky little devils!

It's trolley time! While they may not be as interesting as the actual aircraft, I've been having fun the past few days painting and weathering the Hansa's beaching trolleys. I had trouble deciding how I wanted them to look - painted gray as the W.12's instructions indicate, dark wood as shown in the W.29's instructions, or something altogether different. I like the looks of the dark wood wheels seen on some models but most of the period photos I could find show these heavy wood wheels to be a light color.
After stumbling across an interesting video on weathered wood effects using Vallejo paints I decided to go that route with my trolley wheels. The video is about 15 minutes but is well worth watching. The subject happens to be a simple crate but as the presenter states, the technique can be used on any wood structure or item where this kind of appearance is desired.
This does not involve simulating a grain effect as we tend to do using artist oils or colored pencils but depends on layering of many different colors.
Here's the video...
http://www.plasticmodelsworld.com/node/1489
...and here are my trolleys with the wheels painted using the techniques described.

Thank you all again for those kind comments.
Just added a little exhaust staining across the upper wing and attached the prop. The latter sure brings it to life! Now I've got this sudden urge to yell "Contact!". :)

Armed and dangerous. Just finished assembling and mounting the observer's Parabellum. This is the kit-provided gun with rolled photo-etch cooling jacket.

The final bit. This particular W.12 had an anemometer air speed indicator fitted to the starboard wing so I added a GasPatch Models unit. Photos of the real aircraft in the Windsock book show the indicator was painted light gray and was attached to the forward spar between the third and fourth ribs inboard from the wing strut. Unfortunately the photos aren't clear or close enough to show how the indicator was mounted so I made an educated guess and slightly modified the part, replacing the mounting plate with a thicker piece of styrene which was drilled and a brass wire inserted which fit into a hole drilled in the wing. A small styrene wedge was added as a reinforcing plate and to help keep the indicator level as it's on the sloped part of the wing's leading edge. The indicator face was angled slightly to the rear so as to be easily viewed by the pilot.

Outstanding work Eric, the icing on the cake with that indicator.

My oh my Eric, what a great job! The detailing is exceptional, the finish flawless, and the subtle weathering and staining most convincing. Simply beautiful work! 8) 8) 8)

To finish off this thread, here's my completed W.12 with all it's accessories. I'll probably permanently attach the beaching dollies after I've taken the necessary photos for the AMW article. I'll also take a series of shots to be posted in the Completed Models section.

That is a fantastic build of the W.12. I learned quite a bit for my next one.
