So while waiting for the Copperstate Nieuport 17 I thought I would start some work on this one. It will be finished in Markings from the Lafayette Escadrille.

Nice choice, Rick! I'll be following this one closely.

I have this kit (and CSM's early Nieuport 17), too. Like to make this one an US trainer. What version will you do?
-
Great I'm ready to watch and learn! ;D
Ryan
-
Excellent!
We will be able to see the diff between this kit and the new ones.
-
Outstanding choice(s) Rick, will be following both (this one and when your CSM 17 arrives).
-
That's a nice kit Rick. The Roden Nieuports can be made into very nice models.
I'll be following your build.

Hi Rick
I look forward to all Nieuports! I got to get up close to a full scale and airworthy one just last Monday. I look forward to seeing your version unfold. Getting that silver dope right is going to be the trick.

A very small update just to show work is being done:
Interior parts being painted. In particular working on the wood parts. Windsor Newton Acrylic Oils over a Tamiya Beige base coat.

Yep. That's where I'd start but I still can't bring myself to acrylics for wood finishes. I have to work on that because the waiting time for the oils to cure is so long. But my tries with acylics never look as good as the oils...?? Your work looks just perfectly fine in acrylic. I will have to learn.
Looking forward to more. I have started a Fokker EIV but the CSM Nieuport is next after that. One at time for me!
Cheers

Alistair,
Have you tried this product? I prefer using oils as well, over an acrylic base color.
Our local paint dealer has a small Winsor & Newton selection and was able to order this for me from his supplier. It solved the drying problem for me, reduces drying time to 24 hours or less. It's a gel of sorts, you just mix a "blob" of it about 1 part Liquin to 2 or 3 parts oil paint straight out of the tube and away you go! The bottle illustrated is a lifetime supply, I'd recommend the smaller one.
Cheers,
Lance
-
One thing I want to emphasize is that the WN Acrylic Oils are different than Straight Up Acrylics. I cant work with Acrylics for wood grain either. They have the fast drying properties of Acrylics but can be blended more like Oils! That being said I only use them for interior wood grain as I STILL PREFER OILS for overall wood finishes! Now for a small update on the Roden 24 BIS. I used the same Tamiya base in the same spraying session and had this reaction. Most likely Mold Release. Didn't even think about the possibility as the kit has been in my possession for years!

Hi RAGIII,
I use 'DecoArts' Crafters Acrylics for all of my modelling wood effects.
They are acrylic oil paints that have a smooth creamy texture and after application by brush (over a acrylic base colour), fully dry in around ten minutes. They can be blended together and also sealed with the usual acrylic or lacquer clear coats. The range of colours is good to.

Working in Retail December was not a Month with a lot of Modeling time. I have finally begun to assemble things in the CSM cockpit. JMHO but I have found things a bit tricky to align. Others have flown through this kit so I know it is simply my mediocre skills at fault. I have completed the first 3 or 4 steps and will get more done today. As for the Roden kit I managed to strip the bad interior paint today and will re do soon.

I use Valejo a lot for items that I hand brush, mostly parts in the interior that will barely be seen. It brushes quite well. I have sprayed Valejo mixed with Future as an overall color, like my Dr1, and Jasta 11 DVII and Albatros, but still prefer Tamiya Acrylics or Drooling BUlldog for spraying.

Finally I started mine – and I love this kit...

Looking great, I like the blue colour as well. I got the Late version as well, the only reason I picked it is for that unusual wood ammunition "cabinet"! The instructions and details will help the Roden version as well, I guess :)

"Others have flown through this kit so I know it is simply my mediocre skills at fault."
Rick, I have finally got around to reading through this thread after being absent from the forum for several weeks and I read this!!!! Now I do not like to do this as I retired nearly a decade ago, but I have to put my teacher's hat on just this once and reprimand you for writing such nonsense: there is absolutely nothing that is remotely mediocre about your modelling skills: we all make mistakes - so what? Making mistakes was one of the few things that I was good at teaching!!
Lecture over, I return to being an observer of other modeller's wonderful efforts, yours being no exception. This is going to be an interesting thread with two contrasting kits. I am really waiting to see how you tackle the aliminium dope finish on these models - I have never been able to do that convincingly so I always avoid it.
Stephen.

So I have gone from what seemed to be an interior that was taking forever to this. The rear fuselage is assembled and mounted and test fitting of the side panels shows just a bit of care needed. I also have decided to do N.1950 without the clear panels. Regarding that airframe I filled the holes for the elevator control lines as supplied and reversed them per the original.

Very nice progress on the fuselage, Rick. i am pretty much on the same point as you are and went through equal experiences regarding the side panels. That’s one of the trickier aeras with this kit I think. Great eye for the detail when it comes to the holes for the elevator control lines!
Best regards
Andreas

Side panels attached as well as the upper decking. Some filling will be required but I am sure it is my construction not the kit. I have learned some things I will do differently on the next one 8)

Hey Richard, looking very good, and great fit of the upper cowl)
just do not overfill side panels, they should stick out a bit, as they were plywood "cheeks"
-
Catching up again Rick: the wood finish in the cockpit is truly first class. What a pity most of the detail will not be easily seen.... - could you have left the side panels off so that we could see it more clearly?
Stephen.

Thanks Stephen! As always I appreciate your comments. Yes I believe the panels can/could be left off , actually seems to be designed to accommodate that. On the other hand a lot more details would need to be added. I don't like leaving panels open as I appreciate the closed up lines of most WW1 aircraft. Just My preference.

I have progressed on the Nieuport 17. I added some PE to the aileron control exit ports that I had re positioned earlier. I also filled, sanded, and re scribed the front/rear fuselage join. I then sprayed all major surfaces with Model Master Gull Grey as a primer prior to some subtle pre shading.

Thanks for the comment. I am enjoying the 17 so much that I have not worked on the 24. Funny because this is the point in my dual builds where I usually say something like "Now to bring the other kit to this point". So this one is kind of a "Tandem Build at this point 8) By the way this came in the post yesterday:

I have painted the airframe and wings XTRA Color Weiss Aluminum. I also have begun to apply the Markings. The Seminole Head is from Kiwi Decals and the Roundels are kit Markings. Due to no ones fault but mine the wing roundels are slightly misaligned between the wing and Aileron. I thought I had it perfect but did not :( I will do all of the weathering after markings are complete.

Continuing on. Still have the stenciling to apply but the major markings are done. I painted the cowling with Humbrol Matt Aluminum the polished with SNJ powder. Sealed with a coat of future. I attached the gear to bring it up to date. By the way I painted the tires a yellowish/pinkish/grey. Never done this rubber color before so just did it to see what it looks like. Don't know how accurate the color is but I do like the look ::)

Nice clean, precise build of the fast little French fighter. As for the gray tire color, this is correct. The tires were this color because the black coloring of tires was of yet to be added during this time frame. Looking forward to more of your thread. I also like your cowl treatment.

Some progress today. I have begun to paint a few details and add some weathering. I used oils and pastels. There have already been a few alterations since viewing these photos 8)

Very nice weathering on a super aluminium dope finish. That looks just right to me - but then I am probably biased!!

Thanks Stephen. I always appreciate you looking in. I am working from photos of the actual aircraft but still toned down a little bit of what you see in the photos. I felt it was a bit heavy on the right side. The weathering is still a WIP however 8)

I did a re-paint of the leather strip and then mounted the windscreen and other details. I couldn't resist mounting the upper wing. Still a lot of weathering and touch up to do!

Further progress. I have added the final parts including the upper wing Lewis converted to a Mk.I using parts from WNW. All that is left is to do the final weathering and finish the rigging. The pilot figure is from Manta and this kit may inspire me to actually finish the Figure ???

The weathering really adds to the look. The pilot figure looks awesome!
I would like to see it photographed against a background of another color, if possible. The white background tends to overpower the details.

Great looking Nieuport Rick.

Thanks Bill, greatly appreciated. I have more or less finished the weathering and am almost finished with the pilot ::) I will ask this here and on the proper WW1 aircraft questions section. I saw a post on FB recently that indicated French Aircraft had the rigging wires painted blue, I would assume light Horizon Blue. A photo of an "un restored" Caudron from the Smithsnian was posted as proof. So as I have never seen any other mention of this what do you all think? Xan?

Mark
Thanks Mark ! I have had an Andreas Moment. In previous photos of the left side there is a dark streaky area that looked sort of like weathering. In reality a series of stupid mistakes led to an uneven off color section on the fuselage. I finally did what I needed to do which was sand and re spray that offending section. I feel MUCH better now 8)

Thanks for looking in Stephen. So far just one Nieuport 8) These will be the last photos prior to completion. Rigging is done except for painting the wires and adding Turnbuckles from white glue.

Rick,
Now that's one outstandingly beautiful Nieuport my old freind. Looks like CSM has well truly surpassed the old Hobbycraft 17. Isn't your Nieuport piloted my an American? I can't remember the Gentleman's name but I'm certain he was an American. Looking forward to the Nieuport 24. I have the kit and will need a good example to follow.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Thanks Gregory Old friend. Yes on both counts. The CSM Nieuport 17 is leagues above the old Hobby Craft kit and yes it was flown by several Americans. Dudley Hill is the one I was thinking of when I did the weathering.

Great stuff!! On to the N24!!!!!

Steve and Terri,
Thanks for your interest in the 24 8) Honestly the Tribute build to Des and My desire to do the Jasta 10 birds have this one on the back burner. Rest assured when I finish the DVII, Albatros, and Pfalz DIIIa I will pull this one back out and probably just start a New Build Log. Perhaps July or August as a projected date ::)
