I just found this video on Youtube. At first glance, it looks like they did alright with the instructions - and the instrument decals are there, too.

Thanks for posting - the contents of the box look nice. As my supplier had mentioned they were ready to ship a week ago and he should have them end of the month or so. Fingers crossed!
Cheers,

Looks fantastic.
They even tried to give it the WNW "look" with the instructions.
I was also impressed with "little Manfred". Very crisp molding, kind of looks like him...
I hadn't been interested in the bust before, but I think I'd give it a shot having seen it up close.
-
Wonder if Meng will sell separate engine sprues.

My gratitude is with Meng and the Wingnuts Corp for not wasting the efforts of the WNW team. Meng was astute in making this a single boxing with both rectangular and circular access panels and what appears to be the parts to make F1 thru any Dr.I not fitted with a Clerget. OOB builds will be very nice!
I hope the decal markets are paying attention. I hope Pheon would bring back 32002 the JG2 markings.
I have a Roden kit that I will build as MvR's 152/17. I have two Meng's on order with Sprue Bros, so these may be a J6 and J19 subjects.
Looks great!
-
yes it looks very nice on the sprues indeed. I agree even the bust looks good - very crispy details - I wonder if that is an entirely MENG deal or if WNW had been planning to include a "bust" option? If all MENG, kudos for going with something different (brings back memories of the old DML/Dragon 1/48 WW1 kits with pilot busts included)
-
Thanks for that link, it has increased my confidence level in the kit. What I mean is, thank goodness there are 4 marking options! Sad not to see the familiar Wingnut logos on the sprues, ah well.
-
Does look very nice indeed. I must contact Wheels and Wings to confirm one if they are going to stock it! (so much for slowing down on new Kit purchases, but on the bright side I did maintain my resolve for almost 3 weeks ......... :-[ )

Lance

Compared to me, you're a regular pillar of strength and self-control

Fine looking kit. Anyone who complains too loudly should be sent everyone's old 1/28 Revell Dr.Is they have tucked away and made to build them all.
Looking forward to getting one soon.

The video pushed me over the edge, and I pre-ordered one this morning. I still have a bunch of Roden Dr.I kits in the stash too. It will be interesting to compare. Lots of building pleasure! ;D
Best regards,

You did better than me Lance. I have one pre-ordered from somewhere I don't know where and one from the Hobby Depot in Tempe. It is a nice looking molding alright.

Yes, I also pre-ordered/reserved (whatever) from a few different sites and cannot remember from whom. Anywhere from from 3-5 kits. Better go back and checked my CC statements and saved PayPal receipts....... :o

Streaking doesn't look right on the instructions artwork to me, it shouldn't be the same angle on the wings/fuselage/tailplane. The streaking on the wing should slant about one rib. Also the stabiliser was painted seperately to the fuselage, patterns shouldn't align. Now to go look for some photos...

I'll buy the kit and then I'll buy Aviattic's streak-decals and the probably one more kit. But the kit does not seem to have reached Germany's ports yet.

Check out the angles on this photo from the WNW website:

Resolve, backbone and other words with similar meaning seems to be non-existant in my vocabulary... I'll order a couple soonish, despite my initial resolution not to.
-
Same for me, Faf. I'd no interest in WNW's 99GBP Triplane in three different boxings. However I couldn't resist the Meng (triple version) at the Lucky Models price and I've got three on order - for the princely sum of 107GBP for all three, including shipping. (They will mark the customs form at 18 USD, so hopefully no customs charges.)
I know, I'm a tart!

I suspect there was more variation in that pattern than people think there was.
Here is a shot of a crashed Dr.1 where the streaking looks remarkably "lined up" across all the areas. It's not exact, but it's much closer than expected.

So, von R (2, if you use the late style markings), Voss, Goering and Gottsch (yellow 2?).
Can't help but kvetch that a set of serial numerals, 3 or 4 of each, would open up the possibility of modelling most Dr.1's.
-
There are already 5 sets of masks available from Montex masks. for the original Roden kit, but should fit fine as a mask to the Meng kit.
That gives you 10 more options (and at least 1 I like, much more then all the Meng options combined), but it should not be long before there are many, many options available in either mask or decal form.

Oh, my! This is pure WNW plastic - fully developed, I think! Nothing that won't stop you doing an amazing Triplane!! Decals, PE and everything else you need! Sell the car! Mortgage the house! I see pleasurable modelling coming on... even those multiple Roden colour schemes are a real possibility... Group build, Anyone?? Regards, Marc.
-
PE, instructions and plastic look very nice to me -nice that they included all the optional stuff in one box :)
The decals, honestly, don't impress me so much, I suppose I'm too much used to WNW, who had neat stuff like factory work numbers, strut markings, cowling and wing data plates and such on their sheets.
Aftermarket decals should cure that, though! (The Pheon Voss sheets come with a lot of this stuff, too)

I received mine today, from a chinese e-bay seller... Did not even bother to look inside the box, it arrived absolutely crushed... :'(
-
Ouch...! I've had boxes crushed before but never anything like that... i'm guessing the parts are equally wrecked. Was it packed properly, or just dropped off the back of the truck and run over a few times before it got to you? Maybe an insurance claim in with the postal service might be warranted - did you get a picture of the parcel before you opened it?
-
Mine is due to arrive tomorrow. I pray it doesn't look like that!
-
Mine was partially crunched and wet thru the shrink wrap

Yes I did, and set them to the seller yesterday. I got a quick response this morning from him, asking me if the parts were ok ::) and promising he would do his best to help...
It arrived packed in a soft white foam box and wrapped in black, trash bag style, plastic.

I got 2 last week from Great Models, the only nit to pick is where the front cockpit bit attaches to the middle win is pretty weak. The right side bit breaks off pretty easily from what I've heard. One of mine had that happen, the other was O.K. I have the Eagle Cals #94 which I plan to use on one of them. I'd like to try the streaked decals from Aviattic also, their decals are terrific. A very satisfied customer.

I have used Aviattic decals several times myself, and can only repeat what you mention about them being outstanding.
I'm sure lots of folks here have used them. They really are great.
I'm happy to give them a nice little plug like this because they deserve it.

Mine arrived today with the standard Meng banana wings! But no worries there. I think it’s been said before but I think that the instructions are poor. No mention at all about rigging the control cables or limited rigging although the instructions give you alternative holes below the tailplane. It seems to be the case that the instructions are aimed at someone with no knowledge of the real aeroplane so they can just build it but if you have a degree of knowledge then you need a Windsock to supply the answers if you don’t know already. I also thought the part painting info was poor - both fuselage frames gloss black? Maybe they are but it just highlights how thorough the Wingnut instructions were. I wish Dave J had a pdf set salted away!!! I will also consult my Windsock Special plans before cleaning up the trailing edges of the extended span ailerons as I don’t know if the scalloping becomes a straight trailing edge further outboard and I don’t want to scallop where none is required. But it’s an extremely cheap set of Wingnut plastic - I have two more on order from my LMS - when all is said and done and I suspect Ray will he kept very nicely by the sales of his ‘How to’ volume!!

My take on the reason for the broken part is two fold: 1. It's very thin and easily susceptible to breakage. 2. Look at the location of the seat on the sprue directly beneath the sprue of the part in question. If the seat is directly beneath the part, it will break. I have two. One the part was broken because the seat back pressed up against it during packaging. The other isn't broken because the seat was a little off to one side and the seat back didn't protrude into any vulnerable parts.

There was a post on Facebook this week - it was by either Richard Alexander or Dave Johnson... photographic evidence that the frame on MvR's crashed 425/17 was black. Also that the plywood triangles of the forward fuselage were overpainted with some sort of red primer.
-
Hmm, I would love to read that and see their evidence but I do not facebook.
For my part, at least from the really good picture on the WNW website of the wrecked 425/17 that shows the frame and plywood fairly clearly, they do not look overly dark as one one expect for black/red in a b/w pic of the time...
-
It's not so much that picture of 425 that shows it but there's a bunch of other pictures of wrecks. I went back and fourth with him on that thread on FB. He cited a bunch of examples. The main Wing Spar and that triangular piece on the side of the fuse are painted in a reddish brown primer. They are not wood grain, but essentially a painted piece. Very interesting stuff.
-
I'm hoping that Ray will be taking all of this on board when he puts together his book. Personally the grey/green frame paintwork always looks easier on the eye than stain black and red/brown paintwork for the fuselage panels sounds bit garish but if Richard A and Dave J are happy that those colours are right then I would never argue with, essentially, Wingnut info!

I have been looking through all of the crash pics I have. I am sure Richard and his team are far more experienced and have far more knowledge than me. That being said I am not 100% convinced that the triangles are primed in red/brown. My first thought is why No other "Experts" ever noticed this? I also saw some photos that show the spar and it is not always red( Many do show a dark primed spar) Just really not sure at this point. As for the tubing, yes, I think a lot of DR1s had black. As Richard said it appears some of the later ones were grey. One question I do have is the floor. If one assumes that the triangles were red primer would not the floor be done likewise? This would therefore extend to DVII's and EV's I assume ? Perhaps this has been discussed previously on the "Drome" ?

Ha and I am here building 425/17 from the Meng and have the interior parts ready for paint and now what I thought was going to be an easy color choice is up in the air. Sigh.
-
Something else I wondered about was the fabric panel behind the seat. I would not be surprised if that was lozenge fabric as per the D.VII. If Wingnut had done the decals then that would have been provided no doubt but Meng are silent on that.

No reason to wonder about that panel. Plenty of photos show just plain old CDL fabric 8)

Thank you for clarifying that. I thought that lozenge fabric got pretty much everywhere!!

WARNING! - After many messages to and from the seller, who kept asking if I could repair the broken parts, and then asked me to scan the instructions and mark exactly what parts were broken and send him pictures of every single broken part, I posted a claim through ebay's customer service, and he refunded me HALF of the price I paid. So please beware of doing business with this ebay seller. His name is applesha886
Now, can anyone recommend a site (in Europe if possible, to save on shipping costs) to buy an uncrushed Meng triplane?

I am afraid we still have to wait for this kit to appear in Europe. HSome shops do not show this kit at all, some, like Hannants have it on pre-order (future release).

Hello PrzemoL
It's good to hear from you. The Meng Fokker Dr.1 kit has only arrived in some Australian shops in the past day or so. Retail price here is around $A 120 so not that cheap a deal compared with the $US39 price for pre orders from Hong Kong.

I've found that AK-Interactive has it on pre-order and they are supposed to arrive by Sept. 15th, so I will wait... and ask them if they have arrived ok. They are located about 200 kms away from my home. :)

Good they are available Dave but I might have to wait for a possible 20% off sale at that price :)
