Just completed the base for the Roden Albatros D.III, which is intended to look like a factory floor. The impetus for building this one was the extensive
use of woodgrain decals. I couldn't decide exactly which Albie to do, so I decided to depict a factory fresh D.III, hence, minimal weathering and bright colors.
A nice looking build with many inaccuracies, some of my own doing. I scratchbuilt the wheels and the propeller, and added some detailing items. More info in the build thread.

Have a look at the pictures and, as always, comments and criticisms are welcome.

Beautiful Albatros!

Georgous DIII, Kenser -
All your details have really lifted this one up.

Great finish. I love the woodgrain. But I am confused, the upper wings seem to fall down a bit...

Beautiful work Ken, and I love the dio idea! So simple but it elevates "just a plane" to something so much more.
But I am confused, the upper wings seem to fall down a bit...
That stood out to me too.

Yes, the wing is warped. Something I didn't really notice until too late.
-
Shame about the wing, but that takes nothing away from a really nice presentation. Love the finish on the wooden factory floor as well :)

Fantastic modelling skills, Ken, and great attention to detail. The wood-panelling is sublime and all the internals and the nails etc are masterful.
That wing warp does catch the eye though, exaggerated probably by the angles you've photographed it. I've built this kit and have several in the stash and have never seen a warp like that - it looks like the common warp problem you get on the WNW D.V - you didn't swap out a WNW top wing did you?
Doesn't matter, the model is still in a higher league than most of us can manage!

Nicely done. And a ditto to all the above comments !

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. I have yet to build a 'perfect' model and I'm going to have to keep a sharper eye out for inaccuracies.
I think the base came out really well. It's balsa strips glued onto a wood plaque, then painted gray, sanded to give a worn look, then some splatters of AK 'engine grime' for the oil spots.

Stunning work! :o

A relatively simple presentation but it has turned a model into a very eye catching vignette. The background is very well done. The wheels are first class and infinitely better than my attempts to scratch build some!
In all a first class model despite the upper wing warp.

Ken,
The reason for your build was entirely successful! The wood grain decals look superb as does the Nail Heads and other details! As for the upper wing it seems we both have experienced things more common to the WNW DV/Va. You got Banana wing and on My DIII from Jasta 4, I got Banana Cabane :o Oh well, your DIII looks Beautiful!!

Beautifully finished an detailed Kensar and I love the little detail with the chocks, ladder and trestles etc which just bring the subject to life.
Beautiful scratchbuild work on the wheels too!

Thank you for the gracious comments. This model adds to my WW1 building experiences and as I gain a wider breath of techniques, this is still a reminder that the basics can't be forgotten.
-
Well done, Ken - I really am impressed with your scratchbuilt work and overall finish to this model. Your factory floor was quite ambitious and looks wonderful - a great way to display and excellent model. I've experienced an upper wing warp with my Roden Albatros D.II, too actually.
And thanks again for the advice you gave me on the nail head decals - yours look fantastic.
Cheers,
Gary

Wonderful work, the painting and wheels in particular are exquisite.
I note that others have commented on the upper wing. I have also made the same mistake by not checking before building, so don't feel bad about this; I bet that from here on in you'll never not check! :)
Cheers,
BC

That's true, Brad.
As Bob B. would say, 'I have a cunning plan' to fix it. However, I'm not sure when I will get to it. It involves some figures.
Thanks for your comments, Gary. I am always impressed with your work.
