Good Morning All,
I've begun a new project this morning. This will be a conversion of the Roden #602 SE-5a to the earlier SE-5 configuration. I've had this one in the back of my mind for years, dating back to the days of the Aerodrome. At the time the kit had just be issued.
The conversion itself will entail added additional span to the wings, reshaping the nose and radiator ,lastly an engine swap to the 150hp Hisso direct drive. However I'll not be going as far as modeling the greenhouse canopy as seen in the earliest Se-5's. But I'll be modeling an example that as been modified along the line as done by Albert Ball. I'll be using Rib tapes supplied by my good friend Richard Andrews. Thank you Richard!
Ok the first photographs.

The kits, references, and the Aviattic Rib tapes both PE and decal.
(https://s19.postimg.cc/bcorodmar/IMG_2017.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Now for the first cuts. I've marked out the cut marks for the added span for the wings. The lower wing with her left tip extended to be reshaped later in the project.

As always any and all comments are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Very exciting project, my old friend! I have had this project, in 1/48 scale, on the drawing board for almost as long as you have, so I will be following very closely. Like Rick, I look forward to learning from the master!

Bud,
Glad to have along on this ride my old friend. You may remember I did this conversion in 1/48 as well. It was sort of a kit bash conversion using Monogram fuselage (cut down to 1/48), Lindberg wings and a little scratch built. I believe it was posted on the Aerodrome way back shortly after the dawn of time. I very much appreciate your more than kinds comments,Thank you. As I posted earlier in my reply to Rick, I believe I've learned more from you than you've learned from me.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Yes, Gregory, all of our old friend...ditto to all of the above in spades...so will you be doing exactly the machine that Ball personally 'refined' and flew with 56 squadron...A4850?
-
Gary & Doug,
Many thanks fellas I do appreciate your comments and your time.
Highest Regards.
Gregory Jouette
PS: @ Gary it's good to be back at.
@ Doug That's very likely ,but without the downward Lewis. Still debating especially since my other SE5 conversion project was in Ball's A'4850.

Wow Gregory, this is coming along extremely well! The wings, fuselage, seat etc. are beautifully done! You can post the photos without it taking you to the hosting site in this way Click on the share Icon. right click on the hotlink for forums. Copy then paste in your post. remove everything outside of the img brackets on both sides of the link. I don't know if I have explained this well but if not perhaps someone else can?

Great work Gregory. I'm interested to see how your wrinkled fabric turns out. I'd encourage you to follow Rick's advice on posting - your hosting site brings up a lot of dodgy links for me!!!

RB Motion is great stuff!
I use a lot on my m/c kits.
-
Alistair and Rick,
Thank you both for your kind comments. Followed the given advise and corrected the photographs.
@ Alistair: Fingers are crossed in hopes the wrinkles turn out.

Steve,
I completely agree RB Motion is great my old friend.

Dear Gregory,
I really like your progress so far, it looks great! The extension of the wings, the extra detail on the fuselage, the work on the engine: Everything looks fine! You are asking for positive and negative feedback. But I didn't find anything negative -- Sorry!
Best wishes
Andreas

I can't see any photographs. I'm using Firefox.

It appears there's a problem at Postimg.Org. They hope to have this issue rectified soon. I'm not too happy with them at the moment .

I have had this problem intermittently with Post Image. If I go back and "Modify: the post it usually clears up without doing any modification. Just hit modify and then save. Might work 8)

PS: Nope didn't work on my re post of your photo.
PPS: Just checked and all of my photos in the Albatros and Dolphin builds are also GONE! Just went to my Flickr account and downloaded @70 photos just in case Post Image fails to correct the issue

Gregory,
I have only just found this - great to see a conversion and extra details added - I really like the fabric wrinkles and I hope that they turn out as you plan them to. The engine details look very convincing too - in Fact like Andreas I too cannot find anything to criticise! Just looking forward to more....
PS. I too am pleased to be able to put a face to a name, (ansd I was not frightened away!).
Stephen.
-
Gregory,
Hope you've not lost your mojo and will eventually come back to this. great idea, and the execution is looking very promising.
-
Jeff,
Thank you for your kindly remarks my friend. The project isn't quite dead yet just moving along at a snail's pace. I've been working on the rib tapes but problems with my motor skills are making it very difficult to do. I spend way more time correcting my mistakes than anything else. I'll post photographs as soon as I finish the tapes.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Keep up the great work Greg; there is no rush and it's wonderful that you are still "at it" after your minor set back. It's a great project and going well, I'll look forward to the next update, "my old friend"! ;)

Hello All,
Well it about time for an update again. First off I'd like to publicly thank Richard Andrews of Aviattic for his support and supplying his PE Rib Tapes for this project. These tapes are an outstanding product and well worth it.

Great product fellas and not too difficult to use. In my case I fond them easy to use, that is on days when my hands weren't shaking too badly. I have the decal version of ribtapes from Aviattic for the next 1/32 project.
On with the update.

Giuseppe,
Thank you, your comment are very much appreciated my old friend. I quite happy with the PE rib tapes and look forward to seeing them under a little paint. The tapes aren't that difficult to apply and do add much in the way of additional detail. One thing for certain they do bring Roden's wings details much closer to a WNW example.

Gregory, I'm coming up for air now that my Albatros is "just that close" to completion. I saw this build of yours in the "Construction" mix and jumped all over it. A super job so far, my friend: reshaped wings, cut out pulley accesses, PE rib tapes, excellent paintwork...you are a modelling machine! :D
Best of luck with your build, Gregory, and I will visit often to watch your excellent methods. Cheers! 8)

Ed and Gary,
Many thanks fella's.Your comments are much appreciated.
@ Gary: Good to hear from you my old friend. I've been watching your Albatros D.V thread, she's just awesome! So Gary just between you and I. Will we soon be following a 1/32 scale Lanc thread from your talented bench.

Gregory, this is a fantastic build, I am glad you re-started it, the PE rib tapes are awesome, how du you glue PE to plastic by the way?
I use CA glue but often the PE details come off ...

Hi, Gregory. Well, just between you and me, I don't think that the big Lancaster is in my future for quite a while yet. I've just received a commission build for four models of 1/35th scale armoured vehicles. That will take at least a year if not a few additional months to complete. The real problem is the building of a brand new display room for the beastie. This model is, what...with a four foot wingspan? The cost of the paint alone would break my modelling budget! ;D
But the reality is that time passes, and I'm 74 now. Equally, I have a cache of over 24 kits that are my favourites, and I'll have to complete them before I can consider the good ol' Lanc. But I do note that WNW may also be offering a "forward fuselage" kit of the cockpit area forward. Now, that might fit my current display case! BTW, don't put too much emphasis on my age. I simply consider that, as of now, only half my life is gone...! ::)
Best of good luck to you with your SE5. I'll be watching, not out of criticism but out of admiration of the work you can turn out. Cheers, my old friend! 8)
-
Good to see that you are working on this one Gregory. The wires on the engine are truly marvellous - a realistic touch which really brings life to the part.
Stephen.
-
Stephen,
Thanks my old friend. Those wires came me fits. The photographs are the third and final attempt at wiring a Hisso.
