hi!!!
I decided to start a new topic on this. A little progress with the "power eggs". This Letord 4 had the most streamlined engine pods and I decided to make them of Milliput. It was fairly easy, but they are rather heavy in weight, so I need to move this one about rather delicately until I get the struts and upper wing into place. Next I will furnish the cockpits and the upper details to the fuselage.
BTW, can you suggest me any free photo hosting service, that allows me to link the photos here? Adding photos as attachements seems to be quite tedious...
cheers, Skyhook

Welcome to the club!
Your build looks very promising but the photos are indeed poor quality. They do not do justice to your work, I am sure.
As for hostimg, I am successfully using imgBB: https://imgbb.com/
Will be watching your progress with great interest.

Hi Skyhook, I would love to see your amazing work more clearly. I have been using Flickr but there is a maximum of 1000 free images, you then have to pay a subscription. I have found that it is very easy to use up the 1000 picture allowance so am looking for a new hosting site too.

A very nice looking build to date! As for Photo Hosting I use postimages. Pretty user friendly!

Take a look at Imgur for photos. Free, easy to use, and unlimited usage. I've been using it since Photo Bucket went "mercenary" a few years back and really like it.

That Letord looks very good. Using milliput for the engine acelles sound pretty heavy to me. I would have laminated palstic sheet or carved some from wood - it is lighter and as easy to work.
This type is new to me but no less interesting. Nice to see another of the lesser known types being built here.
Stephen.

Thank you all! I will look into your suggestions over the weekend and will hopefully follow with better photos after that. Yes, the French had many interesting aeroplanes apart from Nieuports and Spads... easily overlooked, because theres not that much info on them outside the realm of french language. It is easy to forget that MF 11 and especially Caudron G4 were some of the most important warplanes in the first half of the war. A lots of solid war work done and probably the planes that did most damage to the enemy, just like BE2cs and RE8s on the British sector... the actual workhorses, which should get a bit more attention in the modelling world :)
Cheers, Skyhook

OK, now they should be bigger and better :)

Now the photos are indeed much better. :)
But how about clipping them a bit (unless you really wish to show your entire workshop) ;)

Much better...and the work looks Awesome!

That's more like it, beautiful work like yours should be seen clearly.

Yes better photos allow us to appreciate your skills all the more.

Thanks to everyone for your kind help! :) I didnīt have as much time as I had hoped for modelling this weekend, but a couple of things I managed to do anyway...
I added the cockpit details for the pilot, oil and fuel caps, a few hatches and a handle and footholds to the port side. I also scrapped the idea of painting it to the 5-colour camo scheme. There simply was not enough photos to provide reliable information for it on a Letord Le 4. Seems that most of the 4s were painted in the yellowish Ecru-finish, like most of the earlier Letords too. Fortunately there are a few genuine colour photos of the earlier Letords, especially the Le 1-type, that give a good idea of the colour. I have been thinking of modelling Caudron G6 and R4 one day and thereīs a good deal of photos of them in the 4- or 5-colour scheme. So Ecru it is for this one :).
Next I will make the exhausts and the radiators for the engine pods, after that I can attach the upper wing.

Wonderful work on this unusual plane and great scratch building skills.

Just what Manni said. I think I never saw a model of a Letord before.

Thanks!!!! A little progress tonight. The radiators, exhausts + shutters and the rudder added. Next up; making of the wingstruts with the typical french white bands... that will be a bit tedious, but I think it will be worth the effort.

Continuing to be a Most Impressive build. The rudder and Radiators look great!

Hi!!!
Thanks for your encouragement :). The top wing is now in place. I made some research and noticed that the pale tapes on the struts were actually horizon bleu instead of white. It is just the orthocromatic film that makes them look whitish in the photos. This was a bit more complicated affair with the the struts. They had aerodynamic fairings at the lower attachements. I rolled little water drop shaped blobs of Milliput and halved them when nearly dry. I attached them first to the lower wings and only after that measured the actual struts to their correct lenght.
The rudder is elsewhere, waiting for a new shade of blue. The first shade was too dark for the french insignia.

Now the wing sturts are all in place. Also the complicated framework around the engines and radiators... quite a contraption! Next up, the landing gear and cocades etc.

Really Amazing work. This is turning into a Beautiful Model!

A superb piece of scratch building. This is a product of a master modelmaker.
Stephen.

Thanks! :). Heres the result this evening... propellers, armament, rigging and some smaller details still to do... so actually quite a lot!

This is looking superb, I had never heard of the Letford before so this is also a very educational build for me. Not just about aviation! :)

An exceptional build, Skyhook. Nice level of detail, complicated subject.

Even Better on it's gear!

Wow! what a superb creation.

I wholly agree with the others - as I wrote earlier a masterpiece from a master modeller.
Stephen.

That's a great build!
All is nice but I like the steering wheel and the french field blue on the undercarriage most, looks perfect! What paint did you use?
Cheers,
Frank
-
thanks guys for the overwhelmingly positive comments, much appreciated :). I think you make me finish this model properly... usually my problem is that i skip to the next subject before finishing the details of the current one!
The light blue paint for the struts etc is Revell matt light blue, might be 47 or thereabouts, I am not home right now so canīt check. Seems that especially Letord and Caudron used a lot of light blue for various parts... it just looks deceptively light in the period photos and virtually impossible to tell from grey and ecru in b/w photos.
Lately I have been making the steering wheels using thin copper wire and heat stretched sprue for the spokes. I make a loop of the wire around a thin brush handle, tighten it by turning, remove it, then cut a perfect loop, squeeze it closed (with superglue)and add the spokes + centre. I think the result looks better than just photoetched ones. The best would be adding the wire loop to a etched wheel, but I havenīt got any and havenīt got the gear for the photoetching either anymore. Next time i do a wheel, I will take a couple of photos the show you my method. Itīs economical and rather easy if you have a good magnifier and a steady hand.
cheers, Skyhook

Your method of making control wheels sounds very interesting. They are one part which I always have difficulty with - I am putting that idea in my notebook...thanks.
Stephen.

Hi! Its been a long time, but theres some progress happening... armament andsome small details still missing, but it was a good weather to do some photographing. Actually the first properly sunny day here this Spring.

Super example of scratch building. A super model - and in the right scale too!

thank you all very much!
I will complete this model rather soon... I have a Caudron G4 as well in the works, it is one of my favourites of the french subjects.
