Nothing like a good bit of sewing on a 1/72 aircraft to help test your patience....

Looking great - not an easy model to rig,

Thanks Terri, Rick, Stephen & Mike  :D

Actually, the rigging is really easy the way I’m doing it.. just pulling it through the bottom wing - simples. The problem I’m having is attaching the top wing. I thought I’d nailed the dihedrals but they don’t quite marry up. So I’m having to elastic band the lower wings to a smaller angle, I tried to fix the wing yesterday but failed miserably.. I knocked it off after much swearing and cursing. I just couldn’t get it all to marry up.. so after scraping off glue and repainting, I’m ready to start again. Any tips most welcome!

Here’s where I’m at...

I am in complete awe that you can even come close to lining up all of those struts! I feel confident you will master the assembly!

Thanks for the encouragement Rick,

Well, just as I thought ‘that’s another kit binned’ I suddenly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! Got it all together  ;D

I did pairs of struts at a time, reinforcing with the rigging as I went along (I do love that monofilament gives such strong support). It  effectively locks everything in place. It’s now naturally forced the dihedral to the correct angles.

Phew.

Great success Guy!
I am not scared by rigging but I am scared a lot by the cabane and here I see a lot of struts also on the engine nacelles!
That would be an interesting challenge!

Thanks,

I decided to reinforce the landing strut as I could see the epoxy joint wouldn’t hold.

I took Terri’s advice and made a small ring out of brass rod then soldered it to the strut. I’ve only recently bought the soldering iron on a whim, and it was easier than I thought. Super strong too! I might go all ‘Frank’ on future builds!

This is looking fantastic!! What type of solder do you use. I’ve been using CA glue on PE and I see how much more you can do with soldering. Do you use flux as well and if so, what kind?

She's looking really good, Guy! Good job on the upper wing as well as the soldering.

Thanks Fredrik,

Fred - yes, I can see soldering opening up a whole new world of modelling possibilities! It’s almost impossible to break and it does sand down. I just ebayed a cheap as chips iron and generic solder - yes, I used Flux - again a bottle on eBay. I think the whole lot was under £20.

Bargain!

If I had put on all of those struts I would have started with the outers and then added the remainder two at a time. I built the Frog Vimy and the Airfix 0/400 kits in that way, and I regularly scratch build aircraft with multiple struts in the same way, (Caproni Ca 5 for example). I know that it is too late now but you might find the idea useful for another time.

Frank: you must use flux when soldering - it cleans the joint and makes the solder flow otherwise you will get awful joints. As Gary has commented, solder is easily filed to clean the joints and the results are very much stronger than CA or any other glue. Soldering is not nearly as difficult as many imagine (and as I used to do).

Awesome! You guys are making me think about dusting off a gift My Mother gave Me years ago...a Soldering Iron( Cool Heat). Maybe there is hope for me yet!

Great results all around, including the rigging. I am sure the final result will be superb.
