So this build was suspended a while back due to Broken H Struts and also cabane strut issues. I have a FB friend, Paul Knight, that had some H struts cast in Brass. This has enabled Me to get back to this kit! So, the upper wing is mounted....Finally ::)

I have been looking at this photo and have a question. Is it Me or have the double wires with wood been replaced by standard RAF wire?

Well it wouldn't be a RAGIII build Thread without something being added ::) I sold some Old 90mm figures and picked this up:

I am pretty sure it will be French but Not sure of the pilot at this point 8)

Oh surprise! Rick has started another of his multiple builds....
Frankly Rick I do not know how you do ti. I would be completely confused if I tried to build more than one model at a time.
Stephen.

I have worked on the wings and assembled some of the interior on the SPAD XIII. Next up is painting the interior.

So I have progressed on the SPAD XIII build. Interior is painted, installed, and fuselage halves glued together. I must say that I am puzzled by some very good modelers having fit issues with the interior, This is not restricted to Very Good Modelers on this Forum but also includes FB. I have done Nothing that diifers from the kit assembly directions and all is fitting together as planned. The upper fuselage held in place with finger pressure shows No Real fit issues and did not require sanding or modifying the bulkhead in the front cockpit/ rear engine compartment.
RAGIII
I added the Canvas Bag to the right fuselage, made from sheet styrene:

I only mentioned the fit because if I knew what I did differently I could pass it on as a "Tip" for the building of this kit ::) As for the markings, I am leaning towards Edmond Moulines of SPA 3. I could use the kit Stork marking and would just need the 14 for fuselage and upper wing to be masked and painted.

She's shaping up very very nicely RAGman!
Glad to hear you found no fit issues in the fuselage.

A little bit of progress. I have painted the "Yellow" finish and the matching color to the metal areas on the SPAD. I also am getting used to a New Airbrush. I purchased an Iwata Dual Action, Gravity Feed gun. I was once a pretty talented painter with single or dual action guns. Those Days seem to have passed me by ??? I have used a PAASCHE H for about 30 years and find I cant't get as much control with the Iwata as I did with the single action gun. Yeah, I know it is just a matter of practice and learning the needed mixtures 8)

Just back from vacation so I'll need to do some more catching up on all the other great looking builds!
Wasn't the demarcation for paint/linen on the SPAD XIII different from the straight line of the VII?

Looking, like the colors, what exactly did you usa !

Thanks for commenting! The answer to the Demarcation line is Yes...and NO! I have looked at numerous photos and there are Many that have the demarcation between the colors as I have presented. ( Especially Early SPAD 3 birds) I have No clue as to when the change came about. A photo of Moulines SPA 3 bird shows it as I have done the line. I have No photo of the #11 bird flown by Heurtaux in SPA3,My other choice, so will go with what I have.

Thanks Amigo! I used Vallejo Iraqi sand for the forward section. The rear was a Tamiya leftover mix from previous builds so no real idea ::)

Today I started working on adding the basic markings and beginning the weathering processes. Lots more to do/blend together.

Shaping up nicely. I'm with you. I have used an H forever. I added the chromed brass back end, replacing the red plastic one, and it has a nice balance. I was convinced to get a Micron B and have fiddled with it for a few months to ok results but for basic painting I resort to the H. Simple to use and clean. Thinning, air pressure and masking lets me accomplish finer work with only things like Luftwaffe mottling and tight feathered edges calling for the Iwata.
Steve
-
Great, Rick!
If you are having trouble with your airbrush perhaps I could persuade you to come over to the dark side and brush paint .......!?
Regards
Dave

Absolutely gorgeous Rick! I do love the colors, BUT the change between your pics on the 29th compared to those from the 31st . . . WOW! What did you do? What method did you employ to get that variegated/modulated colo/finish?
WD

The weathering is looking top notch there Rick - well done!
Cheers,

Really excellent job on laying the paint Rick , same with the weathering as well .

Thanks Steve. The H is a nice gun. That being said I just need to get used to the New one, but still can use the H in a Crisis 8)

Thanks Warren. I have used raw sienna, and a lot of Gold Ochre oils just worked into the acrylic original paint.

I am catching up Rick and have to write that the paintwork is very impressive indeed.
Just a small point: I am with Dave - all those words about pressure and parts leaves me very confused. Clearly I am a relic of the past - spray guns were never part of my toolbox. Hairy sticks rule here!!!
Stephen.

I really like that colour! I'm still not really happy with the yellowish tones on my Caudron. This looks closer to what I want.
/Fredrik
-
Fredrik, You are dealing with a slightly different color. This one is a "Yellow" period scheme vs a CDL scheme. I think your colors are perfect! So here is the progress. Rigging started on the SPAD VII and continuing to work oils into the XIII finish!

I wanted to do the olde Glenco issue of the SPAD XIII in Rickenbacker's colors but now that I see yours, a french plane should be in french colors.

SPAD's are always a sight to behold, especially when they are as beautifully built as this bird.
The color combination in conjunction with the weathering I like really well.
