The Grigorovich was beginning to wear me down, so as a means of taking a break, I've started this one.

She'll be mostly OOB in this scheme:

Using Uschi decals for the wood, which will be almost entirely covered by the summer leaf camo.

kewl!

Thanks, Bo!
I actually started this project around the end of November, but what was supposed to be "quick and easy", wasn't. After applying all of the wood grain decals to the fuselage, I began "painting" the metal fittings with a new silver Sharpie. Should've tested it first. As soon as I touched the tip of the pen to the first hatch cover, the ink virtually erupted forth, destroying the underlying decal.
Fortunately, only one panel was damaged and it was an easy fix. Just set me back a few days. I thought I had photographed the repair, but I seem to have photographed the other side. Oh, well.

Know what you mean by needing a break from challenging projects . It is good , gives you time to sit back and enjoy a easy build . Relaxes the mind and gets the ideas flowing once more . Going to enjoy tagging along for this one Bud , so far you are to an excellent start and beautiful eye catching scheme !
Terri

Thank you, T! I always appreciate the support and enjoy your company!
Work has progressed and the fuselage painting and decal work is nearly completed. Just a bit of weathering and detail painting to be done.
This is how she sits as of today.
Cheers,
Bud

I use to use sharpies for detailing , but over time the ink will bleed it the surrounding area ruining the paint job . Not sure if it will bleed through decals . I would be careful using a sharpie Bud . She sure looks awesome though !
Terri

Thanks for the advice, T, but I've been using Sharpies for detailing since I got back into modeling about 10 years ago. I always seal them with an acrylic clear coat. This is the first time I've ever had a problem. Needless to say, that pen went straight into the bin.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks, Steve. Yeah. Quick 'n easy. It's all relative, I suppose. In spite of it all, this is so much easier than a resin Grigorovich M.5 with no instructions.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Good save on that one - way to stick with it!! Nice detailing, by the way.
Cheers,
Gary

Looking good!

Thank you, Gary and Steve!

Bud,
You should know there's no such thing as a 'quick & easy' build!
Looks lovely though.. the wood was beautifully done - seems a shame to cover it up.

Hi Bud,
I missed that build till now - don't know, why.
Very nice start on this one, those Austrian Albatrosses are really a different thing aesthetically.
Love your camouflage technique!
Best wishes
Andreas
-
Not sure that's what I'd class as a quick and easy build. I'd use a HobbyBoss kit for that. :)
Lovely work and the camouflage looks wonderful. Like the idea of using Ushi's wood panelling first. Look forward to seeing this develop.
-
Great start Bud, here's hoping that your quick build will go smoother. Love the effect with the wood and camo (especially the rudder).
-
I have learned, there are no quick and easy builds in the WW1 aircraft modelling. ;)
Anyway, despite the title, I like very much your work on this Albatros, Bud. Fine wood, covered with the leaf camo. I am looking forward to see more (and then to your return to Grigorovich)
-
Bud,
Nice recovery from the Sharpie incident! The wood decals looked terrific. Almost a shame to cover them with your beautiful work on the Camo ;D As always a fantastic piece of work !

Terrific work, Bud! I like the camo, how did you make it?
Highest regards,
Jörg
-
HaHa ;D I thought that title would bring some comments, I've got three "quick and easy" DVIIs in a box - unfinished!
Lovely work on the camo Bud, is that sworl decal on the rudder from Mirage?
Cheers,
Tony
-
Very nice work, hope you enjoy your build.

That's looking really good, Bud! It's a very appealing subject in a great colour scheme. I do like your wood effects. That particular colour scheme will be quite striking! Modelling is often just recovery from disasters and you have handled that very well! ATB, Marc
-
I agree with Prez - WW1models are never quick or easy - at least not in my experience. However you are applying your usual skill and patience and making a super job of this one. Shame about the Sharpie but it does not show now - excellent recovery.
Stephen.
-
I'm a little late picking up on this one Bud. Nasty experience with the Sharpie, great recovery. I like the Uschi Wood Decals and the leaf camo is really nicely finished. As for quick and easy, I've done a few of those, or rather started a few that "morphed" into the standard test of resolve and patience almost immediately. I suppose a snap together 12 piece from the 60's might qualify for that title..........! :-\
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks so much, guys! Sorry (again) to take so long to respond, but we have a new dog who's been eating up nearly all of my spare time.
He's a 2 year old German Shepard that we got from the County Animal Shelter. He's super smart and learns very quickly, just like his namesake (sorry, Bo), but he is, after all, only 2. It's getting better. Now he stays out of the model room unless I invite him in, then he lays at my feet while I'm working.
I did manage to get the bottom wings on and started the rigging anchors. Shouldn't take long to finish now.
Yeah, about that easy build stuff. I've built two of these Eduard Oeffags already and one of them I converted to a D.II and both were just that. Quick and easy. I guess the odds were against me on this one. It's all relative, I s'pose.
HaHa ;D I thought that title would bring some comments, I've got three "quick and easy" DVIIs in a box - unfinished!
Lovely work on the camo Bud, is that sworl decal on the rudder from Mirage?
Thanks, Tony. Yep, they are the Mirage decals. They were extraordinarily brittle and fragmented when I tried to slide them off the backing. Every surface is made up of multiple fragments pieced together.
Terrific work, Bud! I like the camo, how did you make it?
Thanks, Jörg. I used Model Master Euro Green, thinned, dabbed on with two small sponge pieces. I used enamel because it's slow drying and smoothed out nicely.
Hoping to finish this one quickly as I have 3 Camels on the way and I'm expecting the Copper State FK8 will be released soon. I want to jump right on that one.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi Bud, he's a handsome chap, your new pal.
Thanks, Tony. Yep, they are the Mirage decals. They were extraordinarily brittle and fragmented when I tried to slide them off the backing. Every surface is made up of multiple fragments pieced together.
Thanks for the warning on the decals, I'll give mine a coat of Microscale decal film if I ever get around to using them.
I must say though, they look really good in place, and you'd never guess that they didn't go on in one piece.
Cheers,
Tony.

Hi Bo! :)
-
Greetings Bud.
Nice camo!
Your nom de plume is certainly appropriate.
I can definately see some magic there! :)
Your new buddy looks very special too. :)
-
The wing camo looks great in spite of the fracturing! Bo looks like a terrific Animal! Two of my favorite dogs from the past were German Shepard. Like yours they learned quickly... and both were very loyal and protective!!

Well Bud, WWI Aircraft Models aren't our only common interest.................!

Thor at 8 years. (He's just turned 10) The sixth German Shepherd I've had the pleasure of owning over a lifetime. He dropped out of the RCMP's Dog Programme and quickly became a loyal and much enjoyed member of our household. Oh, and of course, beautiful Albie, great looking scheme and spectacularly finished!
Cheers,
Lance

Beautiful aircraft and dog/family member.
-
I've got a couple of sets of the Mirage 'sworl' camouflage that need to go on something. Thanks for the heads up on the brittleness.
Jamie
edited because my computer's spellcheck caught a spelling mistake in Mirage and decided that I really meant marriage. I absolutely refuse to marry a decal sheet; well I might consider one of those Aviattic sheets.
-
That swirl camouflage looks very nice indeed. I would like to try it at 1/72 and I know that there are sheets on the market but I have never applied transfers over large areas and wonder what kind of mess I would make if I did. Yours makes me think that I ought to try….
Stephen.
-
Stephen, it is not that difficult to decal large areas. Give it a try.
-
fabulous budrow.
-
Bud,
Outstanding progress to date my old friend. I've always liked the Oeffag D.III far more than the Albatros D.III mainly because of those wonderful camouflage schemes. Fantastic painting of the camo pattern on her fuselage and equally impressive work one the wing decal too. Keep up the highest excellence.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
PS: Beautiful new Shepherd
-
Thanks for you kind comments, about the model and Bo. Lance, Thor looks like he could be Bo's dad. He's a beauty.
Finally beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. Got the rigging completed, now all that's left are the undercarriage, the prop and lots of touch up, most of which is necessary due to my overall oafishness.
Got to press on so I can clear my bench for the CSM FK.8, WNW Camels and the Eduard SE5a.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Still, looking fabulous! Somehow I always have to touch things up as well... be it paint or decals chipped or worn off, CA stains... can't seem to build a model without that!
Look forward to the final result.

Have missed this recently - I am staggered by that camouflage - it is fantastic. Come to that the rest of the build is pretty good too - well up to your usual very high standard. Looking forward to seeing this one finished.
Stephen.

Really way along, looking real good (!) you are putting me to shame, need to get to my bench !!

Thanks, guys! Almost done.

Just waiting on the prop to dry, then a little touch up and a bit more weathering.
need to get to my bench !!

Yes, you do, Amigo!

Done at last and in the cabinet! More pics in the completed section.

What a stunning build and a great choice of markings.

A great thread and a stunning result on this one, Bud! I do love that very unusual camo scheme - and a favourite subject for me! Regards, Marc
