Title: Fokker Dr I (Jasta 11 - Flying Circus)
Post by: kkarlsen on February 28, 2019, 05:45:09 PM
I wasn't really planning on starting this project already, as I'm currently working on another project involving the WNW Felixstowe, but I simply have to participate in this Memorial Group Build honoring Des, who's work has been such a big inspiration to me.

As some of you might know, I'm also working on a skeletal version of the Fokker Dr. I Triplane.
That build is part of a larger project of making a counterpart to my previous S.e.5a 74th Squadron diorama.
Hence the working title: 'Flying Circus'

Three Roden Fokker Dr. I + Photoetch from Eduard, Part & Tom's Modelworks. AM from Aviattic, CMK, Airscale etc.

Some very nice books on the Fokker Triplane.

Initially I wanted to do the obvious 'Richthofen' Flying Circus.
But haven't quite decided on which Jasta will be the subject.
You are welcome to add your suggestions...

Well let's see how far I get (things have been a bit slow the last couple of months, but spring is around the corner).
It is a nice occasion to get this project started and I hope I will be able to finish at least one 'Tripe'.

Cheers: Kent

Nice choice!! The Kagero book is, in my opinion, the best reference material out there for the tech side of the Tripe.

Thanks chaps.
I will dive right into this, beginning with the cockpits.

I wanted to try different approaches to the wooden floor, the two on the left are oil on acrylics, for the three on the right I've
experimented with some real wood veneer of different sorts. In the back the kit seat with some improvements before casting
copy's.

Outstanding start. I must say that the veneers have worked well but your painted ones look just as good. No major difference to my eye  8) The tread plates look great. What did you use?

A little update on the 'Fokkers'

Just to clarify. I took the photo etched  tread plates from the PART set and made a silicone mold.

Made a silicone mold for the improved seat...

The seat cushions are made from mulliput.
Not that I'm going to make 6 'Fokker's but I like to have a little extra to be able to sort out the best ones for use.

Thanks Guy's! Just to avoid any misunderstandings, I'm building 3 1/2 Fokker Dr I's alongside the skeletal Fokker Dr I.
I'm still researching what planes to do. Right now I have narrowed the subject down to Jasta 11 planes from early 1918.

Possible subjects:
Manfred von Richthofen's Fokker Dr.I 152/17
Ltn. Werner Steinhauser's Fokker Dr.I 564/17
Ltn. Hans Karl von Linsingen's Fokker Dr.I 163/17
Ltn. Eberhard Mohnicke Fokker Dr1 155/17
Pilot unknown Fokker Dr.I 502/17

These planes are all very colorfull, hence the nickname 'flying circus'.

Work on correcting the Roden parts and 'duplicate them continues...

Some of the corrections needed, tailplanes, elevators and rudders...

Covers with corrections, added machine gun blast plates etc...

The streaking is nicely done. One suggestion, I hope you don't mind, the upper cockpit decking and axle wing were painted solid olive. They were wood and metal so not streaked. That being said I really like the streaking results on the axle wing. Your wings should look great if that is a sample!

Thank you for your input.

I'm sort of feeling my way through unknown territory, so your very much welcome commenting on stuff...

Question: I'm guessing the parts you mention were still painted with a paintbrush and by hand, leaving some kind of streaking texture?

Cheers: Kent
Title: Re: Fokker Dr I (Flying Circus) Help needed
Post by: PrzemoL on March 20, 2019, 08:31:15 PM
Nice work, the streaking included.
As for the metal and wood panels they were not streaked at all - this finish was applied to linen areas only.
Still, some pilots had parts of the linen overpainted with personal emblems -this is where you may have some non-opacity effects but rather not in the texture - the paint was well penetrating the linen leaving no texture effects.

As the German army used dozens of different brands of staff cars, it’s difficult to say. You only can go with the radiator. In my opinion it is an Audi 10/28 PS (Typ B). But it might be a Dixi R 10 8/24 PS as well

Title: Re: Fokker Dr I (Flying Circus) Help needed
Post by: kkarlsen on March 21, 2019, 09:44:46 PM
Yeah I know, it's seams to be almost impossible to identify this 'automobile'.

I've been looking at many of the more 'obscure' German makes of the time, comparing the radiators.

Adler, Protos, Wanderer etc...

The closest I've come are either an early N.A.G. Neue Automobil-Gesellschaft AG or the even more obscure 'Fulmina'.
I tend to think it might have been a Fulmina, although I haven't found any surviving vehicles of that make.

What I did find is another photo of the 'move' - a lot of ideas for a diorama...

Cannot resist, at least I have to try to build a 'Jasta' Automobile.

Also looking forward to seeing the 'Jasta-mobile'!
Any idea how you will depict the wheels?
Title: Re: Fokker Dr I (Flying Circus)
Post by: kkarlsen on March 25, 2019, 10:50:14 PM
I am planning on doing the wire wheels like the ones in the photo.
Although most of the Jasta 'Automobiles' I have been able to dig up photos of, are fitted with wooden ones.

Now I will have to rewind it in my brain, how I did it then, 'scratching' the wire wheels for the Crossley tender...

https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7145.msg131699#msg131699 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7145.msg131699#msg131699)

I promised then, to get back to this subject eventually, describing the process.
Fortunately this time it looks like I will only need to complete 4 wire wheels, for the Crossley it was 8!
So, I will give it a go again, with resorting to the wooden wheels as a backup plan.

Lets hope it works again... Kent

looking good Kent. Have you seen the new PE sets, cowlings, and rudders from Aviattic? New triplane decal sets too.  I saw your SE5 dio at Telford, really impressive work. Regards Pete in RI

Hi Pete, yes I'm using the cowlings and rudders from Aviattic.

Richard send me some PE rib tapes, I'm not sure if I'm going to use them. They seems to be a lot of work.

He also send me a 'streaking' set, but I'm not sure about the decals either, maybe I will use them.
In fact I have been looking forward to the 'streaking' part of this build and I have already tested it on the ½ Fokker.

Once I got the rib tapes applied, lets see how the 'streaking' by hand turns out, maybe I will resolve to using Aviattic's 'streaking' decals after all.

Cheers: Kent

Thanks Guy's appreciate it!

So, I've started the'streaking' process...

I decided to use the same method for the streaking as for the first ½ Fokker. Winsor & Newton oil color
Raw Umber (Green shade) over the base fabric color. It's simple and fast too. Not unimportant looking
at the many wings to come...

Some of the other parts are also close to being finished. Cowlings and wheels etc.

Work on the wings is continuing with the opening on the top wings for the ZAK stamp.

I've spend some time working on ekstra stenciling for the 'Fokkers'

Using the 'Factory Finish & Markings' guide found in Windsock Datafile Special 'Fokker DR.I Jagdstaffeln'.
(A little hint on which Jasta 11 planes I've decided to go for)

Thanks for looking in: Kent

Well I tried OK, but I had to give up on both the PE rib tape as well as the HGW ones.
It would have taken forever to complete the many wings in this way.

So I resorted to my own 'homebrew' rib tapes. Actually it is not that far off, it's masking tape.

All the wings ready for painting...

Tails too..

The bottom side of the wings were masked to add the ribs and shadows.

White area for the markings.

Tails..

The top of the wings had the same recipe for the streaking as for the fuselages.

The upper wings. The Richthofen wing had the streaking done before covering it with red paint.
For my interpretation of Richthofen's Fokker triplane I wanted to tone down the 'red' as much as possible.
I do not want a 'stark' red color but a weathered and well used triplane.

The triple tails. I finally decided for the red stripes, it might as have been black stripes, no one really knows?

Cheers: Kent

Kent,
Your version of "Jasta 11 Red" is as close to what I would speculate the real thing was.(MY interpretation only!) Can you provide some details? ie. what is the red product you've used and particularly what was involved in "toning it down"? Incredible Build, beautiful work and a sheer pleasure to follow your progress!

Magnificent finish Kent and some really nice models, spectacular in fact! This is a most impressive display, and says a great deal about some of the older Kits we use in our efforts. I have long toyed with the idea of a Jasta 11 grouping using this Kit with a Red Baron version, Lothar's yellow trimmed 454/17, Steinhauser's mount with the red and yellow markings and the Voss F.1 to round it off. I'll be using your excellent Build Log here as a primary reference if you don't mind, lovely work!

So, after finishing the Aeromarine and the H.M.I. it's time to return to the Fokker Dr.I. project.

Long, long time ago, I promised to show ypu, how I do wire wheels.
Maybe some will think, why would you do this to yourself?

The answer is, that I never have been overly enthused over PE wire wheels.
Secondly there are so many vehicles I really need to add to my collection, more Crossley's, a Rolls-Royce Tender etc...

For the Rolls Royce Tender I will need 12 wheels!

As some of you might know, it all began in 2016 with the Crossley tender build.

https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7145.msg131699#msg131699 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7145.msg131699#msg131699)

As the Crossley build started out, as little more than an experiment, not thinking it was doable, I didn't document the procedure...
Now, for the Jasta diorama build, I want to retry it with the scratch building of a German Staff Car.

To make things a bit simpler, I've been usng the wheels from Roden's Rolls Royce Armoured Car.

Making a silicone mould of the three parts for the wheels and casting resin copy's.

This is the jig I developed back then, it's still the one I'm using. It's a fairly simple tool adding 24 wires x 2 to get
the look of a real wire wheel.

First I place a 'rim' in the middle of the jig with a axle made from 1.6mm styrene rod. Discs can be made in different sizes.
I've been experimenting with various types of monofilament, but right now I'm using 0.12 mm or 0.15 mm.
The 'wires' are glued to the rim with CA.

A second disc is glued in place for the second part. The second rim is glued on top of the other with CA to 'sandwich' the wires
between the rim parts and the second 'round of wires are mounted using the second row of 'pins' on the jig.
After that I've made a disc to 'land the wires on the rim to get the right angular shape of the spokes.

When the CA has dried the 'spokes/wires' are cut, leaving the finished wire wheel, ready for mounting.

The rim is mounted from the back into the tyre.

The five wheels for the Staff Car are ready.

I know it looks quite complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it is really fast to produce
this kind of simple spoked wheels.

Thank you Lance,Richard, Juan, Ed, Ken & Terri.
I hope you can use the instructions on some wheels-

The scratched Staff car is finally up on it's wheels...

It's been a tough one and a lot of detailing is still needed.

Very interesting method for creating those wheels - great result! May be this works also fro my smaller aircraft wheels in 1/48.
I have not understand yet the order of the winding, but I guess this will be obvious while doing it.
Thanks for sharing!

many German car types of the time: Opel, Benz, Protos, N.A.G, Fulmina, Adler,Wanderer, Mercedes etc...
