With the W.12 on hold for now, rather than have an empty bench, decided to break out half of a duellists kit I have - a W.29 (The Felixstowe can definately wait a while!!!).
From an early stage, I decided not to build it as a German plane, but as a Danish SAR version - I simply love the red and white colour scheme.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/colesaircraft/galleries/72157624336495042/?rb=1
This version has been modelled before - not sure if it's been done here - but it should make for a striking addiotion to the display cabinet. From what I can tell, I just need to leave the MGs off and modify the egnie's exhaust. If anyone has any other nuggest of info, please feel free to chip in ;D
Staring with the cockpit parts....

Looking forward to seeing this colorful aircraft come to life. Nice change of pace regarding markings.
-
Hi:
Maxim Lysak did this aircraft based on his interpretation of the photos posted.
-
This looks great.
The exhaust you mention and the taller radiator confirm that the engine seen in the photos is the more powerful Bz.IIIa. This is very different from the Bz.III that comes with the model.
The Bz.IIIa also powered the Roland D.VIb.
-
Interesting about the engine. I've seen Maxim's build and plan on using it for inspiration though he uses the Bz.III engine. Is there any further info on this anywhere? I can get a Bz.IIIa engine from WnW but will it fit without major surgery - and a taller radiator will be an issue too?
Looks like I need to give this version a little more thought before progressing any further.
Thoughts?

Photos 23 to 27 on pages 10 & 11 of Datafile 55 show W.29 265X (with it's Bz.IIIa misidentified as a Maybach Mb.IVa) and captured 2670 and you can see the cowling and radiator differences. Photos 32 and 50 probably also show a Bz.IIIa powered aircraft. Most don't have guns so that should help you out.
-
I can get a Bz.IIIa engine from WnW but will it fit without major surgery?
Gary
Yes, the Bz.IIIa will fit. I used the IIIa in my DLR Mailplane build, and it fit with minor fettling. Here's the posting where it fits:
https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7649.msg142563#msg142563
I had to file the edges of the slot in the engine mount just a bit to make it slid into place, and I needed to change the oil filler pipe and the radiator braces. Other than that, it pretty much dropped into place.
I also removed and faired over the machine guns.
Peter
-
Thank you gentlemen.
As much as the Datafile book would be useful, can't really justify the price for a one off build so will have to live with a few inaccuracies with the build I think.
The other info is very helpful though Peter. Will have a full read of your build (shame about the PB issue) and have placed an order with WnW for a Bz.IIIa engine.

If you’re viewing the forum on a PC or Mac, there are fixes for Firefox, Chrome and Safari. Google for [photobucket embed fix] (without the brackets, of course) and the name of your browser, and you’ll find add-ones to make the images visible again. But if you’re on an IPhone or iPad, you’re out of luck. I don’t know about Android devices, since I’m an iPhone/iPad user.

No time to get out to the man cave so far this week, but the Bz.IIIa has just arrived from WnW....

Cockpit is progressing well and will post up some piccies tomorrow.
In the meantime, however, I have run into a small mystery. The instrument panel decals were going fine until I tried to find decal #100. I simply doesn't exist on the sheet....
Anyone have any ideas? It's also interesting to note that decal #88 is actually the same size as the panel it's meant to be applied to - not like it appears in the sintructions. Decal #67 is also larger than in the instructions as it simply won't fit between decal #69 and the cut out hole for the throttle linkage. Am I missing something here or is it a minor faux pas by WnW?
Gary
-
G'day Gary.
Decal 100 is located on the lozenge decal sheet, down at the bottom. It's a map.
Cheers :)
-
Ha, ha - thanks boggie. Typical as I put the lozenge decal sheet in the spares box as I'm not going to use it. No wonder I couldn't find decal 100 :o ;D
Any thoughts on the other two seemingly oversized decals?
Gary
-
Hi Gary.
Here is a link to petero's build. His IP is shown on page 1 of his build log. Decal 67 looks like a good fit. (that's decal 67 in your instructions for kit 32801. The decal is numbered 62 in kit 32010).
looking at the decal sheet for 32801, decal 67 appears to be in the same proportion to decal 68 as decal 62 is to decal 63 on the sheet for 32010. So if your decal 68 fits then so should 67.
I have misread decal numbers on occasion but that does not seem the situation here.
According to petero's IP you are correct about decal 88.
Please let us know the answer when you solve the mystery
Good luck. :)
https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7649.0
-
Thanks boggie. Looks like the decals are the same as mine - just that the instructional drawings don't accurately represent the actual decals as #88 covers the entire plate which WnW have you paint black so there is a black surround with a white decal in the centre - not like this in reality. Also, #67 won't physically fit if you want a gap between it and #69. In the end, I've just done the best I can - guess it isn't really that important. Just odd given WnW are usually pretty accurate with their instructions.
Anyway, onto those promised pics. Control wheel is yet to be fitted as waiting for some oils to dry, but here is the cockpit. Only addition is a replacent pipe for the spare fuel tank (original is moulded in place) and HGW belts. Painting is done with acrylics and oils....

I echo all the sentiments above, masterful.

Thank you all :)
Made a start on the Bz.IIIa engine. Not a direct drop in - will need minor fettling - but nearly a perfect fit. Upon closer examination of period photos, it appears that the spent cartridge chutes were omitted on this plane, so they will be deleted on this build too eventuially....

I love the way you've done the brass on that engine.
Gaz

Thanks guys.
The leads to the plugs themselves are added next. This view from the inside shows how everything is soldered in place for strength so no risk of wires falling off when bending them to shape. The brass rod is used to mount the cover to the engine using 2 small holes I have drilled out in cylinders 2 & 5...

Brilliant work on the holder and plug wires Gary; I scratched the holder out of brass as well on my W.12 Build but didn't attempt soldering the wires, I can see it's a much better method.

Fuselage halves are mated together along with cockpit fairings. Not much call for MGs on a 1920s peacetime SAR plane, so apertures are plated over to match period photos as best as I can. Pics also show only 4 louvrers on the port side engine panel, so 2 are filled in....

While there is no doubt that Maxim Lysak built a cracking version of this version - and one which inspired me to do this build - I don't agree entirely with his paint scheme. I have no reason to disagree that the fuselage was indeed red with white strips (who could 100% agree or disagree with only B&W photos available?), but I'm not 100% convinced about the wings.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/colesaircraft/galleries/72157624336495042/?rb=1
It looks like the wings and tailplane are a different colour (and lighter shade) than the fuselage. Though I do accept this could be the lighting. Without anything to back it up, I would say that the wings and tailplane are, in fact, plain grey while the main wings retained the standard linen colour. There also appear to be (black) strips along the lower leading edges of the wings.
As for the floats, I guess hey could be either colour, but not dark enough to be coated with the bitumen tar based paint often seen on wartime aircraft.
Any thoughts on this?
Gary
(https://i.imgur.com/Qe6GIl6.jpg)
-
Can'r really help with the colours, but that's one smooth-looking model! Mine invariably end up looking like a mess during construction... ;-)
Jeroen
-
I also have no answer on the color. In one photo it looks like the wings could be dark(red) and on another like you say lighter. I guess you go with your best guess :-\ Your Mods are looking great and construction is clean and neat!
RAGIII

Late type tailplane is added here....

Nice work on the floats and rigging thereof! She is looking terrific all around. I am looking forward to the painting stage!

Paint. I've started out by using Tamiya TS26 Gloss White from a rattle can. This give a nice smooth tough base to start with. I then look for any blemishes which show up quite well and use some wet 1000 grit paper so sand those areas smooth. I this case, I found the under side and the tail area needed a little more work done to hide the join lines....
I'll now leave this overnight for the paint to fully harden before the next stage.

Ed

Thank you for the kind comments everyone. But it's confession time...
I wasn't entirely happy with the result for 2 reasons. I used Tamiya Gloss from a rattle can and ended up using quite a few coats to get a decent finish. As a result, the surface detail ended up being a little 'swamped' with paint which 'softened' the detail. Secondly, and a major faux pas on my part, I got the angle of the stripes wrong. I masked everything up in the modelling shed without directly comraing with period photos. A serious schoolboy error. So, I made the decision to strip the paint and go back to bare styrene and start again. Frustrating as I was happy with how the stripes came out, but I know that if I had left things as tehy were, it would have bugged the heck out of me.
This time round, I've used gloss white through an AB and am waiting for that to harden before masking. Will get some more photos up over the coming weekend.
Annoying, but I really want this to come out well as it is a striking scheme so deserves to be dome properly.
Gary
-
I've been guilty of the same schoolboy error.
The best thing is you were honest to yourself.
Gaz
-
It's a good way to learn by making mistakes sometimes ;D
A bit sooner than planned, but started the masking process again....
More of an acute angle which also results in fewer stripes. Better reflects the actual thing now!

Your re paint looks stunning! Well Done!
RAGIII

Thank you gentlemen. It was a little frustrating at the time, but glad I made the decision I did.
Rudder is fixed in place and control lines added along with lower grab hadles. A little tidying up of paint was followed by the 'E.I' markings. Couldn't find and letters the size required so ended up modifying some left overs from an E.II kit. Radiator is finished using metal pigments - yet to add the brass 'cap'...

Thanks for the feedback. That colour is nce, but my gut feeling is either red or grey for this 'craft. I'm leaning towards red at this stage....
Radiator is complete - brass rod and tube...

Working on the elevators now - waiting for paint to dry before apply Aviattic decals to the undersides with grey on top.
Gary

Wonderful work. Your move to change the stripes was the right one (without me knowing the correct scheme..) The whole fuselage looks more dynamic and correct for that compared to your first go. Bravo - this is turning into an amazing model of an unusual variant of a great float plane. I have the W.12 in my stash - up next in my build list - and would love to know if it had such a variant...?
Cheers

That exhaust is beautifully rendered to say the least!
RAGIII
-
I am getting caught up on this build. I saw it on FB and thought: "What a neat scheme." I didn't know the Germans used a scheme like that, but; after reading the thread I see it's Danish and the colors of the Danish Flag. I bet you are glad you redid the stripes. It looks pretty darned cool and I know hard it is to mask and paint stripes; very nicely rendered and an interesting scheme for the HB to write the least. Too bad all of the neat detail work on the engine is barely visible. Looking forward to seeing the next update.
-
Very good work, Gary.
The stripes are great and the engine plus it's exhaust is very nice done!

Kudos on the re-paint.
Sometimes that relegates a model to the never to be finished pile , glad to see that's not the case here.
