All,
I am a sick, sick man. I also noticed that my allies are sort of out numbered so here is a Camel!
I got his one from an estate sale and it's the first time I've built from this manufacturer. The textures are very nice with subtle shading and clean lines. You can make either Roy Brown's or Mellersh's. To be different, and I like the roundels on the fuselage and the neat wood work, I'll be making the latter. I also don't really like the red and black checkers on the stab so I'm going to modify that a bit. So it will be my 209th Squadron Camel!
So far I've only got the tail parts cut out, the skeletons balsa-backed and I'll start gluing soon.
Thanks for looking,
Dan

Tails and control horns complete!!
-
Looking great Dan. I agree that the printing and detail of this kit is exceptionally well done. Should be a real looker when completed.
-
You're a machine, Dan!
-
Thanks for the look, you two.
Machine? It's a disease, Zac...pure and simple! ;D
More soon...Dan
-
Nice start on what is bound to be another awesome build!

Thanks very much, Rick!
Got the main cockpit tub done. I need to make my own seat belts as the ones in the kit look more WWII vintage. I think I'll add a couple more bits in there but it all went together really well. I'm pleased. More fuselage soon!

All,
I finished the fuselage skeleton and then got the main fuselage skins on and it really looks like a Camel at this point. I think machine guns next and try to finish the forward "hump" and then it'll be on to the wings!
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
It is not only amazing how beautiful these paper models look, but also how quickly you bring them to fruition!
RAGIII

Looking really nice Dan. Are you reinforcing the fuselage with balsa?
-
Thanks Rick and Tim!
Rick...well...in most cases, I don't need to worry about painting and decaling and I take the easy way out on rigging so these things go a bit quicker indeed. Your models are painstaking and works of art!
Tim: Yes. 1/32nd balsa for the sides, formers etc. These are traditionally made from cardboard you'd steal from a cereal box! I have done that, but I work with balsa a bit better. It's also more rigid in my hands so I get straighter wings, tails etc.
This one is almost falling together and will be done rather soon, I reckon.
Thanks for looking, folks.

Got some more done including the engine. The cowling is just sitting unfinished to see how things line up. It'll look pretty nice once filled and sanded!
Thanks for looking...Dan
-
Hi Dan,
looking very good!
Balsa and paper are a great team, combining the strengh of balsa and the surface of paper.
But I never dared to cut as close to the edge as you did in the Avro vid!

Dan. This is looking fantastic! That engine looks like an injection molding. A pleasure to see what can be done with these paper kits.
-
Dan, I have been following this build on YouTube. Your videos are a great resource to the modeling community. Thanks for shooting and sharing them.
-
Thank you Joachim, Tim and PP! This is such a really nice kit it makes the builder look pretty darn good.
Since last time, I finished up the cowling, added the engine and cowl and put on the tails. Now I need to do some rigging in the back end. Oh! I also made my own seat belts if you can see them on the seat and added a ring site (that needs to be painted!).
Moving right along...Dan
P.S. PetworthPilot: I'm glad you are liking the videos. They are kind of fun to make and I do hope they are useful for someone. Cheers...
-
Dan, you are outdoing yourself on this one! The cowling looks fantastic, as do all of the other details and overall construction. This camel will be quite the showpiece! Very well done.
Best regards,
Bob

I think this your best one yet. Really clean detailing. Great work Dan!
-
Thank you very much, Bob and Tim! I really wonder why this kit is no longer in production as it really is sort of falling together and looks sweet once assembled.
More soon! Wings are not far behind.

I really like this one a lot Dan! Beautiful bird and outstanding work!

Thanks Rick...much appreciate the look!
Since last time, I got the tails rigged and started the top wing. The construction of the wings is different in that you add the skeleton parts to a paper backing. Also, there is no single main spar. It's in pieces that go in between the ribs. Not my idea of strength or a way to get a straight structure, but after a night in a heavy book, it seems ok. One issue is that the top skins seem way too long (almost a 1/4 inch) so I did some trimming. A little worried about how the ailerons will match up, now but we'll see!
More soon...Dan

The tail rigging looks fantastic as does the wing. I hope all goes well with the ailerons. I don't remember if I mentioned this but the PC color that was chosen looks perfect to My eye!

Wonderful work Dan!
-
Thank you so much, Rick and Zac. I too like the color!
So I got the top ailerons on with some fiddling and fakery, and then made the bottom wings too. They also have the top skin over-size problem. Now that it's all done, I think what would have fixed it was about 1/16th inches of extra rib leading edge. That would have made the top fold over match up to the trailing edges much better. I figure the skins are probably perfect so maybe it was the rib size or placement of said ribs.
It'll work, though.
Live and learn.
Thanks for looking,
Dan

Marvelous work Dan. You really have mastered these kits. I think you are ready for this one:
-
I kid you not, Tim. I have drooled over that one many, many times. It could very well be in my future. Love that one...
Thanks for looking and enabling. ;D
Dan
-
Nice work on the Ailerons Dan! Your roundels line up much better than My decals do on My builds 8)
RAGIII
-
Thanks, Rick! The trouble is, it's much harder to make decals match up so I think you've got me on that score... :)
Top wing on! Well...still needs some nudging and the cabanes but it seems to fit very well indeed. I'll attempt to get the cabanes on and start rigging later today. Oh yeah...and the lower ailerons!
Dan
-
Looking just fantastic Dan! Really sharp. Very well done!
Best,
Bob
-
Thanks so much, Bob!
Here's all for the weekend. Cabanes and rigged except the front cabane with the little tear-drop shaped wood piece and 4 of the double flying wires but it sure is coming along. Waiting for all the fumes from the kicker to dry before tackling the rest tomorrow.
Have a good week...Dan
-
Really cool work Dan! I’m liking this one a lot.
-
Thank you very much, Tim. Just trying to keep up with your amazing output!
This is sort of falling together. Got it all rigged and the landing great fit perfectly. Just need to rig the landing gear, make a prop and some wheels and she'll be complete!
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
Lovely string job, Dan!
-
Thanks, Zac! Easier to rig than that 504K!
Got the wheels and tires on last night. Just needs to landing gear rigging, a prop, windscreen and a couple of touch-ups with paint. Done this weekend I reckon... 8)

I'm just re-reviewing this build since I enjoyed it so much on the first go around.

Thanks, Gene. Sometimes you do get more out of stuff the second time around! Much appreciated, Gene...Dan

Very fine Camel! I like a lot!
