Title: Show your workbench
Post by: Wolf on September 15, 2014, 08:37:08 PM
I am happy to find this forum. A forum where great craftsmanship can be found. I have seen a lot of wonderfull models and work in progress here and always ask myself, where do you all built this great stuff. Where do you indulge your Hobby?
What does the place you "relax" and "work" look like?

So, if you want, show your workbench/hobbyroom to us.

And as a dont only want to ask, I start this thread with my hobbyroom/workbench.`

My hobbyroom as a cellar room. It was an common ugly cellar room with stonework and concrete floor and top until I tiled the floor, and covered the top and the walls with wood panels.

Now it is quite comfortable. I installed daylight lamps, a spray booth and have a enough drawers to store all the materials which are needed. And of course a Computer with Internet for research.

when you turn around, you find my stash, a couch where I can just relax or read and a little TV

My modeling area also doubles as a computer room where my wife and I have our own computers, I also display my completed models in the same room.

This photo shows my work bench, during the day I can open the blinds to let in natural light.

This photo shows my display area where all my models are held.

This next photo shows my computer, I spend a lot of time sitting here.

At the end of my work bench is where my wife sits with her computer.

An overall view of the room as I enter the door way. This was actually bedroom No.3 but as it is only my wife and myself living here we don't need a third bedroom, we still have bedroom 2 for visitors.

I do all of my spraying out in the attached double garage, we only have one vehicle so there was plenty of room for me to set up a small spraying booth and heat box, also keeps all the nasty fumes out of the house.

I adapted the basement of my house. Low cramped and dark but I'm happy to have a place to modeling :D

Well, I'm certainly envious!

I'm in a similar boat as Red Baron - I work from our dining room table when family has finished the evening meal, etc.

(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/001_zpsd2df009f.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/001_zpsd2df009f.jpg.html)

I also keep all my model making tools, paints and brushes, etc. all in a large plastic storage box as below

(http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i446/epee6/002_zps0646cff6.jpg) (http://s1094.photobucket.com/user/epee6/media/002_zps0646cff6.jpg.html)

The dirty looking (folded) sheet on the box the is the old plastic table cover I throw over the table to protect it.  This is one reason why I brush paint as it is not really practical in my living room and my wife would not be impressed if I tried ............

Dave

Wolf and Des, you Guys can't possibly be building in those rooms.........they are so very neat, tidy, and organised I feel nothing but shame on the condition of mine and envy of your organizational skills! :-[ Suffice it to state emphatically that my "Mrs." will not be shown your photos, I couldn't stand the questions and pressures ("your Buddies on the Forum don't have work areas that look like someone dropped a bomb in there?!?!") ::) Seriously, very nice.
I have a small converted bedroom (we now call it the den :))) which I share with the family desk top computer station. I refinished a second hand roll top desk for my bench, a little crowded but it's my space and I do the spraying and wood work portions (props, bases etc) in the attached garage. I also have my own display cabinets and books in the same room.
I had built a dedicated room in our basement, much larger, five wrap around windows with incredible natural light, several work tables and complete solitude, a beautiful setting to engage in this great hobby of ours. (We now call it the Quilting Room................... :'()
I had thought we'd run a similar thread a few years back but perhaps I'm thinking of another site.
Heres the Bench, exactly as it was this morning as I started on the wiring harness of the Mercedes 200 Au for the D.VII.

................   and here's a few shots of the den, from the entry (ignore the clutter, I've been shredding old records)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/TRIPE/IMG_3393.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/TRIPE/IMG_3393.jpg.html)

.....more of the display area

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/TRIPE/IMG_3394-1.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/TRIPE/IMG_3394-1.jpg.html)

  ......and the data central corner.....

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/TRIPE/IMG_3395.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/TRIPE/IMG_3395.jpg.html)

I won't include a shot of the purpose built model room, as it's more or less off limits to me at this time, and I don't know much about quilts, except that they take up a lot of space to make!
I like this idea of Wolf's, we'll be moving next year and I've marked this thread as I've picked up several good ideas for the future model set up already. Join in as I need all the help I can get!
Cheers,
Lance

You are correct Lance, a similar thread was started way back in July 2012, here it is;  http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=344.0

But we have so many new members since then it will be good to see their work spaces.

Well my work space is a little messier than some, and not as spacious as others, but it does give me a place to go to build and play.

Well, my workbench is rather modest as for dimensions thanks to the scale I build.

There is no stash of kits as I only do scratchbuilds, another space saving factor. :) On the other hand there is a huge pile of plans, drawings, plastic sheets and profiles and various wires and brass tubes....

Des, I did a fast search but didn`t find the old thread. Maybe you can merge both together so that we have all the answers in one thread.

By the way, great answers and pictures here. It is amazing to see all these work-rooms and benches. And it is good to see, that even in the smallest enviroments fantastic models are built. Thanks for sharing all this.

And just one last comment: When I start building models, my workbench changes into a little mess also very soon. ;)

I keep my modelling stuff in a big box and compete with my toddler son and his lego for space on the coffee table.

We've all seen the calibre of your work and this just goes to show that superb models can be built just about anywhere, with very few amenities.

Cheers,

Chris

Been there, done that too Dave! It's a great way to stay involved with the family.

It was only about three years ago that I moved down into my basement workshop. Mind you I did use it for airbrushing, but the table worked well for me for a lot of years. I too employed a plastic tablecloth after spilling a bottle of Tamiya Flat Black on my wife's heirloom tablecloth.  :o :-[ :'(

awesome workplaces guys...and some awesome dining rooms :-D
I have been in the same boat for about a year (having this hobby for less than 3 years in total), and last May I decided to make a hobby room in the attic. This is one of the best hobby decisions I have ever made!

Here are the pictures:
The first picture is my workbench, it is quite a mess at the moment :) Over my head is my whole stash, I try to keep the number o fthe boxes as low as possible. Still it is increasing steadily, but two (Albatros and Roland) of teh WnW boxes are of alreayd completed models. For some reason I can't put them in the basement :-/

The second one is my "throw it when you don't need it immediately" place. This is infront of a window and usualy I take the pictures there. Ofcourse I tidy it up a bit first :) This is wehre you can see the two projects I work at the moment - WnW Fokker EIV and Aoshima 1:24 Lamborghini Aventador

The last one is the "relax" area with a small part of my books, my freshwater tank and the place where I put the completed models :)

Best regards,
Sasho

I don't have a permanent space, either using the plastic sheet covered dining table or even a fold out camping table for individual work.

I started out about 4 years ago with a craft knife, a few q tips, a paint brush and one of my better half's nail files in a spare but quite small airfix kit box.  Soon I bought a holdall style tool box with pots of paint and brushes on the tray, spray tins, thinners, solvents etc underneath.  Now I still have that toolbox but also a cupboard and shelf in the dresser with paints and plasticard, rods and a few half built kits - various jars/pots with brushes, colour pencils, sanding sticks, pliers etc stacked vertically, a wider pot with EZ line and mono reels, tamiya tapes, drill bit sets etc - airbrush booth folded away in its box, airbrush in components in jars still since the last clean on a kitchen shelf - a couple of boxes with odds and ends etc, and stash kits on top of the wardrobe and a few other places.  Models completed and gathering dust on the dresser shelves.

I probably have enough crap to populate a full width workstation with a couple of cupboards and a set of drawers, if I can find the space and get organised!

My bench looks a lot like Rick's. ;D  I'll have to grab a shot next time I have the camera out.  When my MIL visits and occupies my modeling room, I also make good use of the dining room table, so I am very impressed with the great models that some of you chaps turn out from the family living space. ;)

Lance, I couldn't help but notice all of the F-18 (CF-18?) photos in your workspace.  Were you or a family member a Hornet driver?  I've got several of those in the 1/48 stash as well, with decals for a couple of the special aniversary CF-18s.  Beautiful aircraft and very sharp schemes! ;D  But I digress; back to previous century . . .  ::)

Bob

Bob,
I flew Hornets for my last nine years in the RCAF, mostly as an Instructor. My work space also has my "I luv Me" wall and my momentos of a time when life could not have been better and we all were going to be young and invincible forever.(and you probably don't need to ask how that ended up :o) As you say, back to the previous century, now those Guys could really fly!!!
Those Anniversary Birds are magnificent schemes; the fellow who designs them, a Graphic Artist by trade actually sued one of the Decal Producers for Copyright violation and I think he now gets royalties on all sales. It's still done with a new scheme every year for the Airshow Season.

Hello to all,
My turn to present my "Fortress of Solitude"... ;D
First, I have to specify I bought an old farm so...a lot of work.
For example, I got that:
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/20/140920082938845691.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140920082938845691.jpg)
I have to go through that:
(http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/09/20/140920083204755062.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140920083204755062.jpg)
A month later, I did that:
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/20/140920083252719118.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140920083252719118.jpg)
So, my understanding wife got a brilliant idea because the lack of plastic scraping had a very bad influence on my work motivation...
(http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/20/140920083551901991.jpg) (http://www.casimages.com/i/140920083551901991.jpg)
An old 200$ caravan, I put in the garden (my 7 years old bench in front of... ;))
I'm sure I have the most atypical bench of this forum...  ;D ;D ;D
But, it's very useful, confortable and...cosy.
Come in.
The bench:

In country, noise is not a problem:

The "stock":

The paint station:

Of course, I built it with remaining material of the house building.
In a few years, I'll have a real hobby room. For moment, that's not so bad.  ;)
Best regards.
Alain.

Alain,
Now this is completely different, and totally on the mark. You've got your own dedicated and private little space, lots of room for expansion, and no potential for conflict with the regular household activities. You get my vote for both the most unique and improvisational solution to the work station challenge...........I like the look of your "little world" a lot!

I'd always wondered what happened, there seems to be a fair amount of bitterness felt about the special schemes by some Canadian decal manufacturers.

That caravan shop totally rocks!

No real workbench currently here - just a giant conference table I picked up cheap off a business that went belly-up when the tech companies failed over here after y2k....

Tends to get super messy and I have to relocate when we have guests as this is also the dining or get-together table....

Although I did post pics in the last thread, I've since bought my own place, so here's an update. I bought a 3 bedroom place, rent out one, and use the third for my modelling room. There's a computer desk in one corner, but it's not very handy when sitting at my desk, so the chair with a plank on it is the base for my laptop. That way I have only to look to my right to see my reference pics when I need them.

and the "stash wardrobe"....

It's strange, but I always seem to end up with about a 1 foot square area to do my modelling, with the rest of the space taken up with bits and pieces!

This is probably not the tidiest looking workbench on the forum, but I know where everything is!

I might add that it doesn't look like this when the Mrs is in residence.

In fact she would have a fit if she saw this. :o

If I need a break from model building I just wander over to the window and stare at this:

Post by: Nigel Jackson on September 26, 2014, 05:03:18 AM
Goodness me, I'm very envious! There have already been a few dining table "workbenches", so here's mine.

(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2945/15350980315_2eb7e10dc1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/povMCp)IMG_4747 (https://flic.kr/p/povMCp) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

Of course it has to be protected by thick padding first!

One of the major challenges for me is that while over the years I've collected a huge number of modelling tools I can't leave them out for long, so they're stored away in various places. However, when I had a major post-retirement sort out, I came to realise that, in fact, I only used a very limited number of them on a regular basis; some only came out once in a blue moon. What this meant was that I could put together a small tool box. What mattered was that they were close at hand and that I knew where all of the others were should they be needed. Here's the basic tool kit - in a modified shoe box.

(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2944/15350661622_2b417887fe_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pou9TG)IMG_4739 (https://flic.kr/p/pou9TG) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

The same was true for paints and other fluid materials. I probably have enough to embark on a repaint of the entire Forth Bridge. But how many are used most of the time? So here we have a project box. I can vary it from model to model and put it away nice and quick. If I need other colours, or my oil paints they can be brought out as needs be. There's several mixes of oil paint there too for a special project.

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3863/15347786991_15bafe52cb_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/poeqn6)IMG_4742 (https://flic.kr/p/poeqn6) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

And I can get to things like masking tape nice and easy too, as well as other spooled and round things:

(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2944/15350953155_86a07918f3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/povDy8)IMG_4744 (https://flic.kr/p/povDy8) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

Now my glue dispensers won't fall over all the time clogging the tubes; or the cocktail sticks leap out everywhere with the containers glued to bigger bases.

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3848/15164207429_80b6b70ba2_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/p71wye)IMG_4740 (https://flic.kr/p/p71wye) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

I understand all the signals, but please don't think of this as my being anally retentive, or having some obsessive, compulsive disorder or preaching anything. It's a function of where I have to work and a desire to avoid wrecking the surface of an expensive table. It's not for everyone, but it's helped me gain a bit more control over the model building process.

So, ensemble:

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3858/15350633492_f7e5897c8f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pou1wG)IMG_4756 (https://flic.kr/p/pou1wG) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

And yes, I finally did manage to get that Fokker E.V under way and even allowing for a major catastrophe last week it's almost there. Very soon now I'll post some photos.

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/15164243570_e197f3bdfc_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/p71Him)IMG_4758 (https://flic.kr/p/p71Him) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

It feels better with all that off my chest.

Best wishes
Nigel

I had a good tidy up of my modelling stuff the other day.  I put all the paints and thinners, spray tins and airbrush bits in one box, which fits nicely in my dresser cupboard.  All my stash is now in a couple of piles in the bedroom.

I put all the spare decals, unused pe etc into one freezer bag, sanding/filling materials in another, loose infrequently used tools in another and finally scratch materials in a fourth.  These sit in the bottom of a regular tool box along with my jar of paint brushes and in-use spray tins.  The top shelf of the tool box houses the tools, paints, sanding sticks, glues etc that are selected for use on my current build.

Much tidier as the house isn't littered with modelling gear on almost every surface.  How long this will remain in that state, is another matter!

Here is my bench, during my DH-9a build.  To the left is a file drawer that holds my decals in hanging files. I'm ambidextrous, so brushes on the left, files and sanding on the right. I work on a piece of plex and can mix paint right there as needed.

Organized chaos. Each draw has its category, knives, paints, files, specialty tools. The only ones that erk me are the after market and they could be in any one of 7 drawers. I do have to increase my work space though and should put the paints away. Then if maybe I could find some talent that would be good also.

Having moved just over a year ago from a house in which I was lucky enough to have a  dedicated room for my modelling and display cabinets (six in number) I am now relegated to the draughty old porch for my modelling  :'(. and have no display space at all  :'(, serious bad planning on my behalf.

Still at least I have my own space when the laundry is not being done and I can now after almost a year get back to the bench  :D.

There is good news however and that is I feel the need for a garden office to accomodate my bench , stash and display cabinets and if all goes well hoping to achieve this within twelve months  ;D

It's basically just a leftover kitchen worktop on a coupe of trestles. But it's fairly long and works well. Lots of little storage spaces & a very good daylight lamp makes it a good place to work. Build on one end, paint on the other.

But I need to rearrange the stash as it's taking up my leg room!

Kai,

You've only got 3 Felixstowes in your stash  :o what if you want to do more than one colour scheme of each?

Good question Guy!
Kai, I have a few S/W kits; I'm one who is happy to see WNW ventur-ing into the 1920s era of aviation, which has been non-existant until recently.

As you can see my workbench is rather modest. :)

(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag72/ondrejmokry/IMG_0158_zps1nlgvus0.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/ondrejmokry/media/IMG_0158_zps1nlgvus0.jpg.html)

It looks messy but in fact it is based on highly a sofisticated and scientific systematic which is not visible to a casual observer. :)

Well, now seriously, my flat in Prague is really smal, just one room, so this is the best I could achieve with the space available. In this respect, the scale I have chosen is a great advantage. I can hardly imagine manipulation with the WNW Felixstowe in this corner.

Btw. the small little thing on the table is the fuselage of the Nieuport XI, the Albie is now stored in the blue box next to the laptop.

Cheers

Ondra

When I last posted in this topic (at the top of page 4) I was working on the dining room table. I am still working on the dining room table but I have plans for a permanent modelling table in my shed.

The shed is 12ft. x7ft. and will have a model railway down one side, out at the end and in the other side. Half of this side will be taken up with shelf and cupboard space and the modelling table that I have been building.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l5/soddit36/Stuff2/IMG_20151004_160205.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/soddit36/media/Stuff2/IMG_20151004_160205.jpg.html)

The table legs and beams are sturdy 4-inch x 2-inch wood with a 1 inch thick plywood top of 4-ft. x 2-ft.. I've built a narrow shelf above it for the railway test track, a paint rack and a steel plate for resistance soldering. There will be a wall-mounted desk lamp above the table and a modelling vice at the far end.

they have a very cool modular system, I have the smaller version of this and is very handy, sturdy and very well made.

Hi Guys,

I will also present my workbench.
He is not the biggest, but only for myself.
I am pleased that almost all of you, the table looks like mine , if you are building on. A little chaos belongs there.
On the third photo, you've guessed it, I'm on the photo. ;)
Highly concentrated and a smile on my face.
Just Build a Albatros Va, when I have finished, they will be presented.

So, have a good time and kindly regards from Berlin! :D

I finally got around to adding some shelves. Now the stash can be a little better organized. The little dots on the box ends help me to keep track of any aftermarket bits in the box. I plan to seriously downsize this in the coming year.

Dean, That is not part of my master plan for world domination. The 1/32 Kingfisher, Do-335, Albatros, post war DH-9a are all on my want list, but I don't see too much else, except the 1/16 Tiger II, Pz IV, and nothing else, except a 1/16 T-34/76, and Su-100. But that is it.

Hello and Happy New Year to all!

Butterflies on my desk from a collection neglected. I recovered and restored. But I've prepared myself a lot. Beetles, butterflies, bugs...

Otherwise, it's my job. I am entomologist. But I'm working on bloodsucking insects, much less beautiful!  ;D

Mainly mosquitoes, bedbugs and sandflies  ;)

it is finished.  :D :D
After 5 weeks renovation is now all finished. My new Workbench is now waiting on me again and finally it can go on.
The Albatros needs a little reworking and then the diorama.

Ok, here are a few photos from the room and see you soon with new photos of my models

Best regards
Jörg

PS:On one of the photos you see the "Third Hand". My first impression is very good, easy to work on the model. But this is the first impression, later I will report more

Some of these workshops are amazing.

I do have a question for you all.  Looking at the pics of some of the rooms there are enough kits to fill a hobby shop.

My question is:  how could anyone find time to build the massive stash of kits some of you guys have?  It could take a lifetime.

Hi Robert,
Modellers tend to be collectors more so than builders. At a IPMS convention I went to back in 1987, it was stated that the average "modeller" had about 250 unbuilt kits. Not sure how they arrived at that number but I far exceed that for many reasons. Maybe that number has grown in the last few years?
Cheers,
Gary

I imposed upon myself embargo to the purchase of new models.  :P
But there are exceptions to make it convenient to break the embargo.  ;D
The first time it was the birth of granddaughter and now I have three of them.  ;D ;D ;D
It seems to me that probably will be the fourth,  ;D I'm waiting for the official statement.  ;D
Sometimes I am forced  ;D  to enlargement of the stock, eg. by the family when they want to buy me a birthday present.  ;D
Sometimes, unfortunately,  :-[ when I go into modeling shop to buy the paint, but I can not resist something that caught my eye.  ;)
I have another problem with the workshop.  :P
As I arranged a new workshop it seemed to me that I have a lot of space to modeling.  ;D
After some time, I have only a little space to make a Mercedes engine.  ;)

The second problem is too little space for ready-made models.
