Title: Another WNW Snipe
Post by: mgunns on April 28, 2014, 10:58:53 PM
Greetings folks:  I have been working on the WNW Sopwith Snipe.  I have been following the other builds and have learned a lot from them and thought I would post some of my progress to date.  It is certainly a complex kit with a complex interior.  I tried to take short cuts, but should have followed the directions.  I managed to make it all work though.  Let's start with the fuselage:
I painted the various sections and applied the standard wood grain technique to that portion called out in the instructions.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01282.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01282.jpg.html)

Here is the almost completed interior.  I pre rigged the rudder bar parts A13 and A6.  This is a very delicate assembly and care needs to be taken to prevent breakage.  I used invisible thread and BVB's tubing.  I then pulled the lines through the completed floor board assembly and through the pre drilled holes in part A36.  I didn't CA glue the ends, but rather paper clipped the ends together until the interior side walls were assembled giving it strength.  I also included a cross brace on the underside.
(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01277.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01277.jpg.html)

I used the HGW seat belts.  If I did it again, I would overlap the buckle end over the leather side.  I like using these.  HGW has really improved their product and assembly sequence.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01275.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01275.jpg.html)

Another view of the interior with the machine gun mount in place.
(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01277.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01277.jpg.html)

Here is the fuel/oil tank.  I experimented with oils along the fuel line and the fuel line input fitting.  As this is totally invisible once assembled, I thought it would be could to practice the capillary oil method.  I was fairly pleased with the results and applied it to some of the internal plumbing on the instrument panel and framing.
(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01274.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01274.jpg.html)

Here is yet another of the port side of the interior with the oil method and dry brushing to highlight some of the mechanisms in the complex interior.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01276.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01276.jpg.html)

The instructions were a little vague about the painting of this area.  After looking at the photo's in the instruction booklet and the actual a/c photo's, I decided to paint these parts aluminum.  Some are visible once the fuselage halves are together, so I went with aluminum.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01281.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01281.jpg.html)

The machine guns in place.  I painted them Testors Model Master Non Buffing Burnt Iron and  highlighted with dry brushing.  I painted the ends leather as per the photo's and instructions.  I think they look fine.
They are a little fiddly to put into the mounts, but with care and patience they eventually popped in.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01279.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01279.jpg.html)

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01278.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01278.jpg.html)

That's it for now.  Stay tuned for more modeling excitement as it occurs.

Best

Mark

Not Another Snipe build...an absolutely Beautiful Snipe build! I agree with your decision on the painting of that not so clear portion of the interior. An argument could also be made for service grey, IMHO.

It matters not that a Snipe has been built before - it's always a fresh treat to see one of these builds come together. That and each individuals take on problem solving and finish is enough to keep me coming back time after time.

And what a fabulous start you've made to the project - this is a thread I'll be keeping an eye out for!

Thanks guys for stopping by and your compliments.  I almost did go with the service grey, but; and that's a big but; I had the silver out painting some other sub assemblies, and thought I would just go ahead with that.  With the fuselage buttoned up I can move on to the painting and wings etc.

Thanks again

Beautiful start on what is sure to be another brilliant model from your capable and talented mitts, Mark!  I had the great good fortune of seeing Javier Arango's Snipe up close and personal a few years ago at his facility in Paso Robles.  The areas that you painted aluminum were indeed aluminum, so well done, buddy.  Looking forward to more.
Cheers,
Bud
PS-How's the NorCal house search coming?

Thanks Bud:  So far the model is coming along nicely.  The interior is pretty complex and I dallied on it.  I hope to have it complete by our next model club meeting.   As to NORCAL house hunting, as mentioned, Redding beckons.  We are going to Launch Claire in a month or two to scope it out up there.  We get a lot of info from the realtor so we need to scope it out.

Take care

Mark

Sorry Mark, my message seems to have been whiped away by another incoming post.  What I wanted to say is like Rick said, this is not another Snipe build but a teriffic build of a beautiful a/c. Your interior is tremendously done and alive, with a magnificent seat, lovely cushion and very nice instrument panel. Add to this the beautiful guns and your up to make it a real winner. Well done my friend.

Kind regards
Patrick

Mark,
Is that Redding, California? If that's the case you will be riding your bikes more often. No 10 foot snow drifts to worry about  ;)
Good luck!

Looks great Mark.

Funnily enough I stripped the grey off those panels on my Snipe earlier today after realising if all the other metal parts were bare aluminium then those parts wouldn't have been painted. It'll be interesting redoing it with the fuselage already together.

Looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Hi Bob:

That is correct, Redding California, where the yearly average snowfall is 4"  not 6'!  Hopefully.

Hello, Mark -

Cockpit looking great and all coming together nicely.  This is a nice kit from WNW and it all goes together very well.  Is this the early or late version of Snipe?  What colour/marking version are you going for?

Regards

Dave

Greetings and thanks guys for the kind words and comliments.  The Snipe marches on.

@Dave:  I am doing the early Snipe using kit decals for E8015 "E", D Mulcair.  I like the red wheel covers with the CDL Border and the two tone PC10 fuselage and PC12 Wings and tail feathers.  As it is a post war photo I may just paint the side panels and back decking grey just for kicks.  Who would know?
(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01283.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01283.jpg.html)
@ James:  I originally painted the channels wood, but after it started to go together especially with the firewall, I almost left but; I had the silver and figured what the heck.  Thanks for being aboard.
@ Dave Kong:  Thanks for stopping by and scoping it out.  Glad that you will be along for this.
@ Des:  Always appreciate your looking in and your compliments.  Thanks

Okay folks:

The Snipe is done.  I was going to do a build log but time, weather, jobs, motorcycling etc., got in the way.  I managed to finish it.  It isn't one of my better efforts but I am happy with it.  I would do another one.  I think Autumn, Winter and Spring are the best modeling times, summer isn't the best.  Anyway, it is a notional war time scheme as the scheme in the instructions is post war.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01298.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01298.jpg.html)

I painted it using Tamiya acrylics as called out in the instructions.  The grey looks a little too dark, but; it is a notional scheme.  I experimented more with oils, next time I may start to weather the splatter on the underside.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01296.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01296.jpg.html)

I used EZ line for the cabane struts and in between the interplane struts prior to attaching the upper wing.  I used my 40 year old invisible thread for the rest of the rigging for strength.  I used Bob's buckles eyelets and tubes for the attachment points.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01292.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01292.jpg.html)

For some reason it was not a labor of love and I really had to push myself to finish it.  Once done, I really liked it.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01291.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01291.jpg.html)

I used EZ line for the plug wires as well, but they aren't visible at all once the engine is placed in the cowling.  I did weather the engine using a combination of acrylics and oils.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01288.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Sopwith%20Snipe/DSC01288.jpg.html)

I would like to do another one and use the brushed metal technique that I think Tom R used.  That one is a stunner.

Each kit is a learning experience and this one was no different.  The fit and assembly sequence is very nice.  No problems or surprises, very straight forward.  The tail feathers and rigging back there was a bit of touch and go, but in true Marine Corps fashion, I managed to accomplish the task.  I did use Gaspatch Turnbuckles and did double rig the rudder bar as per the instructions.  A challenge, but as mentioned, a learning experience.  Getting my chops up for a Bif.
Best

I think you have done a splendid job of the Snipe, Mark.  The cockpit
is a gem and the paint work throughout is wonderful.  Lastly, your
rigging work is absolutely first-rate.  The Biff doesn't stand a chance
