I am moving right along with a new build. I will do another Dual Build this time using the WNW Salmson 2A2 USAS using Pheon Decals and hopefully the Aviattic USAS figures. I will also add a WNW Pfalz DIIIa in Jasta 4 markings. I will start by posting the Salmson box photo.

I have started in the usual manner by working on the wood portions of the interior. I will post photos when I am far enough along to warrant them.

This will be great to watch you build, Rick! We don't see too many Salmsons lately.
George

Rick, I'll be there, following your build! I love both, the Salmson as well as the Pfalz DIIIa! Good luck!
Richard

Glad to see you on this already Rick!!!! ;) Will be watching closely...

Rick,
I'm so looking forward to your surely outstanding USAS Salmson thread my old friend.I've had the same kit waiting for it turn at the bench since this one was first issued by WNW's . So I'll be stealing tips and ideas from you once again.
Highest Regards,

Great to see another Salmson being built, there has not been very many of them posted on the forum. Looking forward to seeing you start on this one Rick.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support and interest! Here is a shot of the Aviattic figures and as soon as I find it the Pheon decal sheet!

Cheers,

Bud,
I have narrowed it down to scheme 1: 24th Aero Sq. Eagle and Daschund Motif), or scheme 3: 99th Aero Sq. ( Seven Up Dice Motif)
RAGIII
-
Well, personally, #1 gets my vote. Love that scheme.
Cheers,

Rick,
Are you planning on swapping out the heads of those figures for Hornet heads?
MOSI
Michael,
I have no plans for a head swap. If I had your talent perhaps 8)

Well Bud, since you like it I will go with the Roll of the Dice and do the Eagle and Dog ;D
By the way, I am looking at two different approaches to the Pfalz: Either a known scheme in overall sibergrau with the black striping on the tail, or a generic Jasta 4 bird with Lozenge wings and no personal markings. ( Would give me a chance and reason to order the Aviattic Pfalz wing lozenge )
RAGIII

I strongly support the "generic" choice of subject, just to see you working with the Pfalz-specific lozenge decals.

Rick I will follow your new thread.

This is great news, Rick! I will be avidly following the Salmson build
for helpful hints when I attempt mine. Yours will be a dandy one to
watch. Enjoy this and the Pfalz, my friend. :D

I have been working on the BASIC interior including floor and side panels. Still a lot of detailing and washes to go but this is the beginning:

Rick,
Outstanding progress my old friend. I'm very much looking forward to joyfully following this thread. I thought the WNW Salmson would be a popular item and I'd see many a interesting build threads all over. But alas wrong again. To date I've only seen two or three, even allowing for my long absence that isn't many. Now I've got one to follow and have no doubts what so ever it be Outstanding.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
PS: What shade of blue is that you used on her fuel tank and metal fittings? Beautiful color too.

Hi Rick:
This is a great airplane. If you plan on having the engine buttoned up, you needn't do much painting. When I got the rigging on mine, I rigged the cabane struts first with the wing center section only; made it so much easier. Once the upper wing was on, I used EZ line to rig and when the rigging was done, I popped in the interplane struts. Made the daunting rigging quite a piece of cake.
I look forward to your build and will follow along Rick.

Thanks Lukas! Here is the next update. I have continued with the cockpit work. The firewall and instrument panel is just placed in position. I have weathered the floor with burnt sienna and black oil washes. I am now ready to do washes on the frames and rig the side panels. Still looking a bit rough but after touch up should be good to go 8)

Rick,
When I see outstanding interior details like yours disappearing during construction the old "Phantom Mustang" Kit with the clear plastic shell comes to mind. As Des says above, a real shame when all that detail disappears.. Aviattics' open frame Kit for the D.VII should produce a few stunners that can continue to be viewed, or the 1:16 Scale Camel I saw at a Competition recently appeals as well. I think that D.VII Kit addition may find it`s way to my bench once released! ;)

Thanks to both for the comments. I guess most builds are actually this way in that a lot goes MIA when its all closed up. Lance those framework kits are interesting and in the hands of real masters like yourself and some others would be real showstoppers!

The Salmson Engine is complete. I have to thank Chris Johnson for pointing out the alignment requirements in his build. I have again done this OOB. The copper is Gunze. I have applied a wash of burnt sienna and black oils to give an oily look. That being said it will not be seen at all with the engine panels on ::) There is a lot of room here for someone that wants to leave off panels and do super detailing!

The Pfalz engine is almost done. I have used my normal technique , smoke and mirrors for the wiring and wiring harness ::)
A wash of Burnt Umber has been applied to represent oil stains. Still a bit to touch up and add. As an aside, more of the Engine shows after assembling the fuselage halves than on an Albatros or Fokker DVII so a little detailing is necessary.

A Mini update on the Salmson and Pfalz. I have pre painted the coaming /upper fuselage panel on the Salmson, then glued it into position. I pre paint to avoid masking around the struts and cockpit openings. I will go back and do some shading and weathering with oils. I have also assembled and attached the MGs to the Pfalz and glued the fuselage halves together.
The Salmson is being painted with Tamiya paints using the formulas given in kit instructions.

Re: "The fabric will be treated to represent the Aluminum Mixed in."
I don't know anything about Salmson practices. Do I assume this means there was aluminum powder mixed into the dope that gave it a bit of sparkle? If that's what you're after, you could try some experiments with mica powder. I use it a lot in my work and, depending on the amount added, can range from almost totally indiscernible to fully opaque. It's an amazing material. I'll be glad to expound further if you'd like.
Cheers from NYC
Thanks Michael. I would certainly like to hear more as I am sure others would. The process was used on SPADS, Nieuport 28s and other 5 color schemes. WNW recommends using 3 parts,( this is from memory and could be wrong), XF18 aluminum added to the mix.

Hey Rick,
I use Misterkit silvergrey to my Pfalz Dr1 and Pfalz D III.
I think it was not to wrong.

Martin
-
Well, I ended up going an entirely different direction than originally planned on the Silbergrau. I used a mixture of Testors Engine Silver and Hellblau . I had back up mixtures of the Misterkit paint and even Floquil old silver and French white. I like the results. The photos don't quite show the difference between the upper engine panels and the fuselage but in person one can distinguish between the Silbergrau and Aluminum panels.

I have a question reference the Salmson. What color is the cowl ring? I have failed to find any suggestion in the WNW or Pheon directions, ( Probably poor research on my part), other than those that had specific colors for squadron or personal markings. Is it French brown matching the camo with a Silver/Aluminum ring where the exhausts are, or a weathered copper? Any suggestions welcome! Just as a reminder I am doing the Pheon scheme with the Eagle and Dachshund Marking.
RAGIII
PS: Re read the instructions and found my own answer :o

A small update. I have started to do the preliminary masking of the wound ribbon. This gives the rough basic location for the stripes. Next I will use tape to outline and finalize the ribbon masking, then spray them black. I have also done a little more painting on the Salmson. Next up I will do some weathering on the metal panels.

Looking Good Rick! Can't wait to see the Pfalz with her painted with the ribbon. On the Salmson,I really like your approach to painting the camouflage. Metal sections first then the fabric. The last French camouflage I painted was done by colors metal and fabric together. Worked ok but lead to many touch ups .The only drying time between the shades for metal and fabric shades was the time it took to flush out my airbrush. Too big of a rush.

Rick, I am also looking forward to seeing the ribbon scheme pop out
on the Pfalz...It promises to be a terrific look! It is nice to see the
start of the Salmson painting. As Gregory mentioned, I too like the
idea of painting the Metal areas separate from the fabric.
One question...are you using the recommended colours in the booklet,
and if so, which brand? All in all, a great update, my friend!

Hello Rick,
I am so sorry I missed your start my friend, and what a start you made! With your Salmson you join the absolute magnificent builds of Chris and PrzemoL. The woodwork, interior, rigging and bracing are wonderful. The camo colors seems to be heading in the perfect direction. Also the Pfalz is a beauty in the make. I still do not understand how you can combine two such different builds and stay in the right properties of each build. A real multitasker is what you proof to be. Keep on this amazing work my friend!

Stefan
Thanks Stephan, I appreciate your comment about the ribbon. As for the last portion on the right fuselage I think it ends before going over and around. It is pretty constant on Albatros and Pfalz fighters in Jasta 4 to have 5 stripes on the left fuselage. If I continued to wrap the ribbon around it would have been 6. SO as I am doing a conjectural scheme I think I will paint the tail a light blue or white thus eliminating the controversy!

Thanks Lance I always appreciate your comments! One thing I have run into is the lack of any plain black Iron crosses for the fuselage on the WNW decal sheet. I need to acquire some suitable crosses, then make a mask and spray my silver mixture to create a surround. This will give the outline needed over the ribbon. Anyone willing to part with some crosses from a Pheon sheet or other aftermarket decals please PM Me for Trade info. ( I will be purchasing a Pheon sheet eventually for My Pfalz DIII but I hate to wait until after the Holidays)

Rick,
The "surrounded" fus. crosses on the Kit's Sheet for Option #1 (Buddecke's 5983/17 Jasta 30) have a clear outline and could easily be trimmed. If those would work I have them. Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll launch them immediately if that works, unless you missed this possibility and still have them yourself.
Cheers,
Lance

I worked on the crosses yesterday. I had success making a mask and spraying the Iron cross silver back ground on decal paper. I was forced to use Roden Triplane decals as they were the only ones that seemed to be the correct size. I applied the silver back ground and all looked well. Then after preparing the Roden crosses with an over coat of future I apllied over the silver. All went well. I then moved to the right fuselage cross and ALL went wrong. The cross on the left was applied at an angle and so I couldn't match up the positions on the opposite side. I tried moving the original and of course that is when the Roden decals began to shatter. I lifted the decals I had applied with tape and re thought the whole thing.
My solution was based on when the one photo of the lozenge winged Jasta 4 Pfalz was taken. Within a day or two of that Photo the crosses would have been changed to the common but incorrect wide form seen on JG1 DR1s. So since this is a build based on conjecture I decided to use the crosses from the kit, outline the left one and go from there. I also applied the Lozenge to the tail. This will be over painted with a mid blue or yellow and I intend to let the lozenge show through a little.

PS: The Aviattic cookie cutter decals fit perfectly to the tail, much better than the DVII which was very good! One thing to note is that the tail lozenge is designed to go on before assembling the tail to the fuselage so I had to trim in the center.
PPS: Using the Balkan Crosses has created one more small issue... No white outlines on the undersurface crosses :(

Outstanding work, as usual, amigo! In spite of your tribulations with the starboard cross, both crosses look fantastic. The lozenge on the tail looks perfect and I know from experience that the over painting will be just right.

Thanks Guys but the comments are as always over generous ;D This one is going to be a 6 footer! I am posting a link to a Pfalz photo found on the Net. If copyrighted I will be happy to remove the Link from my post.

PS: I just noticed that the link is for WNW photos but I found it on another site/ location?
As can be seen the Aircraft is VERY dirty. My question is what is all of this grime. Certainly some oil and fuel up near the engine but it is filthy all the way back. So opinions on how best to achieve this look using oils! Burnt umber and black? Burnt sienna, black, and burnt umber? All thoughts are welcome!

Well, one step forward and two back! There were glitches in the cross application that didn't show up in the photos and I actually realized I applied them just slightly too low. So... I used masking tape to lift the right cross with no problem. Then I actually had to sand the left cross off. I have just finished re- spraying the silbergrau in the affected area and will re-do the ribbon later today. I just couldn't bring myself to continue to accept work below even my standards ::) I did apply the light blue tail overpaint and it is OK. I can now do what I should have and wait until I can order the Pheon decals and use the Iron cross that I really wanted in the first place. Once I re-do the ribbon I will set the Pfalz aside for a while and bring the Salmson back on line! In the mean time my question in the above post reference the weathering still stands!

your work is absolutly beautiful
-
I would experiment with the oils as you suggested, and possibly some pigments near the bottom after the oils are dry. Since the overall weathering in the photo you've linked to seems to be in a vertical direction as opposed to horizontal in the direction of airflow, as well as being dirtier on the bottom, this suggests that it has been left outside in the damp elements. Dirt and mud has accumulated and either light rains or dew has slightly washed the dust and dirt in off in the direction of gravity, sort of like with armor. There also seems to be a subtle mottling and light splattering which is also more apparent towards the bottom.
Just my observations, I could be completely wrong...

Thanks Bud. I did mix aluminum, actually a mixture of Aluminum and Grey per the WNW directions. After making the aluminum dope I added it to the colors more or less as directed by WNW. The macro photo shows more than the naked eye although it can be seen. It does grey down and lighten the basic colors for some difference between doped fabric and paint on metal. I just lack the black and a little touch up on the uppers now.

So gorgeous, Rick! I'm a bit intimidated by the French 5 color camo, but you sure have a handle on it. Brilliant work, Amigo!
Cheers,
Bud
Thanks Bud. That being said I have seen you do Scrumble camo over Lozenge and similar schemes. Much more intimidating in my view ???
RAGIII
Great camo, Rick!! Not an easy task...
George
Thanks again Geaorge, Nice to have you following my builds!
RAGIII
Martin, another thanks again to you for the same reasons!
RAGIII
Rick,
Great job on both projects. I have the Salmson in the stash. One of these days I'll get to it-but as a solo build. One at a time is about all I can handle. Looking forward to your next update!
v/r,
Rob
Rob, the thing about my dual builds is they take twice as long as building one individual kit. It just gives me time while one is drying or I hit a stall out point to work on the other.

RAGIII
That makes perfect sense! As is stands now for me, I do a few steps then I have to wait while paint or glue dries. And like you say, you stall out sometimes. With more than one kit in the works I could be building more steadily with less waiting.

Rick , both are coming along really well so far . Really like your camo so far and the Pfalz looks great . Really looking forward on seeing this one finished ...

Cool! If an airliner ever loses a bag of cash in my garden, the Salmson is next on my wishlist! :)

Catching up with your build(s) Rick. The Salmson camouflage is
just superb, my friend! The Silly Putty worked a treat and your

Rick, your Salmson looks teriffic in his camo jacket. As I said before the painting is wonderfuly done and the camo colours are just what they should be! Great work my friend!!

Going to be a beautiful model -I like the slightly metallic tinge. Not too pronounced, but just noticable enough. :)

.....and +1 here as well Rick. You've captured my interpretation of the silvered effect very nicely, looking forward to seeing your shading magic!

Thanks to all of the following, I am humbled by the responses! Des, Gregory, Moustique, Ernie, Martin, Patrick, Jeroen, Justin, Lance, Lukas, and My Amigo Bud! As for the Aluminum and color mix I realize there are some who will not agree with the very slight metal look in the formula. For them I would say that by just using grey in the proportion WNW calls for including the silver, one can get a lighter more grey shade for the linen portions. With a little different sheen to the final finish I am sure it will look great! Again I have merely followed the WNW formulas!

looking good Rick. Just waiting to see how you will weather over the Aviattic decals.
Thanks Willi, Your comments are appreciated. As for the weathering I have two processes in mind. One is post shading with Tamiya smoke. The other involves something I saw on this Forum using dots of oils blended in to the lozenge. My Issue here is that I can't seem to remember/ find the Build Log that explained the method :-[ I think it was a Fokker DVII build. So if anyone remembers or is familiar with the Dot weathering method please point me in the right direction?

The Aviattic Lozenge is now applied to all surfaces of the wings. Again this is a really well done cookie cutter sheet. The few touch ups I will need to do are entirely self created! Once all is sealed and touched up I will do the weathering as stated earlier. I also intend to get back to the Salmson on my next off work rotation.

Ok folks just a verbal update here along with praise for a product I just tried for the first time. First I have gloss coated the Pfalz and Salmson in order to get them ready for applying weathering and decals. I know this is slow progress but my job gets in the way of my real passion :( Thanks to Bob of von Buckles fame I have tried out his Strippers for the first time. He cut them to my requested width and from beginning to end it took me about 20 minutes to mask the ribs on the Pfalz upper wing! What a difference between using these and cutting my own! I will NEVER go back to making my own rib masks! Pictures of the results of post shading the ribs on the Pfalz and Salmson will hopefully appear in a couple of days. Just couldn't wait to praise this product!
RAGIII
-
I lookinf forward to see the result
this product looks good
can you explain your method

Thanks for the GLOWING praise, Rick. It's more than I deserve, but thanks ;)

Worthiness is in the eye of the beholder :D In this case you were the one who thought to make this product available to those of us whom lack the finances to buy a machine and or the skills to properly use one , Like me 8)

By the way, I have now sprayed the Tamiya Smoke on the Pfalz. I think it has turned out OK but I wont know for sure until I reach a point where the wings are sprayed with a dull coat!

Hi Rick!!!
I haven't realised how much I missed on your Pfalz!!! Lozenge looks fantastic especially combined with very sexy looking fuselage ;) Looking forward for more... and will try not to miss this much! ;)

If the smoke layer is too smokey you can go back over it with heavily thinned Silber Grau. It may take a few layers, but you will get the desired results.
Less is MORE!
Looking forward to seeing your progress ;)

Thanks Lukas! I am still working on the crosses for the fuselage and wings. It seems no one makes exactly what I need? I am therefor considering trying to hand make my own masks or perhaps finding out what it would cost to have some masks custom made by someone like BvB or Bo!

OK Bob, I do appreciate the suggestion. It might look a little ODD however, if I overspray Lozenge with Silbergrau :-X If it is bad I can always do some more weathering with oils or something to even things out :o

I have mounted the upper wing on the Pfalz. This has to be the easiest wing ever to properly locate. I was actually able to just place the struts in their locating holes put the upper wing on then use liquid glue to secure. The cockpit padding has been primed with an undercoat of acrylic prior to treatment with oils.

Thanks guys and Gal! I always appreciate your comments! I am at the point where I must finish drilling holes in the Salmson. Finally got the fuselage cross on. I used a cross decal from Eduard as a pattern( Matched the size of one of the fuselage cross markings in the WNW kit.) I then cut a mask using this decal as a template.. I sprayed decal paper silver then applied the mask and sprayed black. I then cut an outline around the black cross. After drying the decal was applied, then later, after the photo, the Eduard black cross was applied over the home made cross. This photo is before I added a black cross over what is shown in the picture.

I finally have enough done to give an update. I have attached the gear legs to the Salmson and begun applying some of the Pheon Decals. I also have prepared the interplane struts( just sitting in position in the photos).

Thanks Mike, The upper wing is now mounted permanently on the Salmson. Once the rudder is painted/ decalled, I will take some more photos. Then the rigging will begin on the Pfalz, and ultimately the Salmson. I have also cleaned up the Aviattic figures and will begin to paint them soon, or so I hope ::)

Thanks for the compliment! My method is pretty simple once the holes are drilled. Just secure one end and then run the line all the way through the opposite hole. A drop of super glue, pull tight and trim the excess. Takes very little time to do the whole thing. I have used white glue to represent turnbuckles and usually I am happy with the results in scale.

Thanks Dave I appreciate your generous comments! Just a reminder that the "Scheme" is a conjectural scheme like Greg van Wyngarden did for the Albatros in His Windsock JG1 fabric special, A "Typical" Jasta 4 scheme based on what colors were available. RAGIIIUnfortunately I know the feeling... :( Ony tiny bit of luck is perhaps you din't pull the decal off... (Thinking positive here!)
Yes, thank God I didn't lift the decal. I have managed to do some touch up but it will never be the same. I also managed to re spray the offending parts of the Pfalz. That's the good news. The bad news is that the fuselage cross on the left side lifted when I removed the masking. All had been sealed with Future and a clear coat of Tamiya semi gloss. No problem on the right side >:(

Rick,
It happens to all of us, I just mentioned much the same "stunt" on my Fee Build Thread. Like yours I got a bunch of CA on a wing by dragging it through a puddle of the stuff I was working with, in my case I'm fortunate that it's on the lower surface. Like yours as well it meant going all the way down to the plastic through ruined coats of primer, finish, several clear coats and weathering to remove it. I know you'll have it looking like the original in no time, just keep your sense of humour! ::)
Cheers,
Lance

I just read about your mishap. Damn annoying isn't it? I have touched up but will probably require one more light sanding and another re-spray!
RAGIII

Really annoying when this type of thing happens, no matter how careful we are there is always something that has to ruin our day. I'm sure with your talents the repair will not be noticeable.

Thats a crying shame. Do you need to replace the decals or can you do the repair safely? Let me know if you need some replacements.

Rick,
Well my old friend I wont say this sucks as it seems a little too crude for my taste. But it certainly does draw a vacuum. I have no doubt you'll be able to make a seamless repair. Glad to see the decal appears intact ,saves hunting for a replacement.

Deciding right now if it is necessary to try and pull off the portions of the decal that didn't lift or if I can get away with sanding with micro mesh and then applying a new cross. As for the Salmson decals I appreciate the offer but I have been able to mask it with silly putty and touch up around the eagle and dog. I am back on my work rotation for 4 days and wiill have time to step away and think about my next steps.

Amigo, knowing your skills, you'll soon have both kits in show winning condition. I know how frustrating something like this can be, but we both know from experience that there is almost nothing in modeling that is irreparable.

Here is the Pfalz photo. It is weathered to look dirty on the fuselage like photos I have in my reference. I will take more and post in the Completed Models section later.

I have no idea why I missed this until now - very beautiful models, the Salmson is a wonderfully built plane, but me too, I especially love the Pfalz in its Jasta 4 markings. It's absolutely one of my favoured. So I can honestly give your kind words back to you: It makes me wanting to built a Pfalz immediately :)

It has been a while since I last posted on this build log. I have been plodding away when time allows. I am almost finished with the initial rigging on the wings. Still have to paint the wires and make Smoke and Mirror turnbuckles ::) Just a few more wires to attach then photos. Probably tomorrow or the next day. On Vacation from work again ;D

Here are a few pictures of the completed wing rigging. The Macro Lens has shown a few issues I need to deal with like the finger print in the clear coat on the left fuselage >:( Next up Smoke and Mirrors Turnbuckles and attachment points. Then fix the exit holes, touch up and move on to applying the rest of the decals.

PS: Also noticed some touch up painting needed on the lines themselves.
PPS: By the way it seems the tail surfaces were in the perfect position to hit my wrist while I was rigging. SO I need to re attach the Horizontal surfaces :-[

Thanks Ernie. Your comments are always appreciated. By the way I am adding a few new photos today. I went back to look at Chris's build to check turnbuckle locations and noticed I had screwed up on the location of one wire on each side and left off one per side. That has been corrected.

Thanks Bud! It was a difficult job. I used three different superglues( before I found one that worked well), and had to go back and tighten several wires with an incense stick after they partially popped out of the hole.

A lot of "finesse" apparent in the rigging job, Rick! The number of double or parallel runs must have really tried your patience, particularly in the cabane areas. As for the finish, just a short "WOW" is all I can add. Beautiful work, doubly so with the quality of her "running mate", that beautiful Pfalz! :o :)

Thanks Lance for the somewhat overgenerous compliment :-[ something I didn't mention is that I went with the "Later" rigging option of only having double non filled and wrapped flying wires. Conversation with Rowan reference to this bird seemed to indicate that was the way to go.
RAGIII

Rick,
I'd go for the "non filled' doubles myself after the marathon task I had with the Ni 28 wrapped doubles. Doable but certainly a test of resolve!
