We are always excited and impressed to see the astonishing models made by our members but we don't often get a glimpse of the workbench where these works of art come to life. So it's time to relax and show everyone your workbench/ model desk and don't be worried if your work area is a bit cluttered and untidy.
Here's my happy place in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia. It always resembles a war zone and at the heart of this organised mayhem a Wingnut Wings Clerget Camel is emerging.

So let's see what everyone else's model building space looks like!

Wow, Dave! Yours is relatively tidy compared to mine...

But in my defense, I'm preparing for Telford.

You caught me with a clean bench, which in itself is worth a photo. I have been a bit under the weather as I just had all my teeth out to make room for dentures that don't fit, so the bench has stayed clean for 24 hrs now. I'm sure I'll be back to messing it up soon.

We all know about the works of model art that our late founder Des Delatorre created, so it may not be a surprise that his neat and methodical approach to model making was reflected in his hobby bench environment

I now understand why I like the opportunity to view fellow Builder's work areas; it makes me feel normal and less guilty about the general mess and chaos in my own space! With the exception of Des' pristine working environment my "Happy Place" as Dave has called it is pretty average when it comes to clutter. I compliment Bud on his effort to spruce up his bench with a cold imported Ale, my desk is no stranger to that sort of addition and I'm not even scheduled for Telford this year!
I have taken possession of our small (9 X 10 feet) Den as my Model display and work space, Computer, and Aviation Library room and placed my lifetime collection of "I love me" photos and keepsakes around the perimeter to remind me I wasn't always a 70 plus year old with arthritis, a heart condition, and 25 extra pounds to drag about daily! My "Bench" is a converted old roll top desk and I do my air brushing and soldering in the heated attached garage. I can only fit roughly half my collection in the room's self built display cases thus I have a large Ikea cabinet in the basement Family Room area for the rest and another will be required imminently.
Here's the Bench after a serious clean up in January of this year.

Evening All,
Dave has referred to the wonderful models that we see on this site and where we make them. I do not know whether space correlates with quality of product but here is my space, the core of which is the tray which measures 12inches (30cm) x 9 inches (22cm). The photo shows about 1/2 of the space on my desk. I do have some drawers in a small cupboard in the corner of the room where I store other paints, plastic sheet, rod, strip, etc, and a couple of old series 1 Airfix kit boxes with scrap and various bits which I am working on, but otherwise this is it! It may account for the small size of most of my models. When I was building the base for the Dornier flying boat I had to put it on the floor of the room in which I work. The room doubles as a study/writing area and my desktop computer on one side of the desk (not visible in photo): I have to be able to move my modelling area away during the day so that I can use the space to work on. I have a couple of glass cabinets in my lounge, and some purpose built perspex cases in my work room for displaying the models. I know that compared to those modellers who work on the dining room table/lap I am lucky!
You can see how untidy my desk is all the same...... but as a psychologist once told me, a tidy desk is the sign of an untidy mind!

Haven't built a WW 1 subject in some time , but I do come by every day and see what folks are building and I must say that this is the most active site ! Hard to keep up with all the builds .
Any way here is my bench ....

Nice to see all this "happy places".
Here is my "Man cave". Most parts of it are build by myself.Fortunately, I recently cleaned up my desk and was able to take a picture before it disappears under all kinds of stuff again. The left half is currently besieged by my wife she is making photo albums, cards and other women's stuff.

I really like this thread!
No I'm also able to show my workbench.
In the middle the main workplace below the roof window (the daylight is great), on the right storage and some small machines.

On the left side my lathe. The "hobby zone" modules in the middle are really nice!

I know this is better suited for the shame corner as it's too messy, but it's my actual workbench in the attic. I'm planning to move everything in a colder and hopefully tidier location and I also need to find a new home for older and smaller models. ::)

This is my workbench, having bought the house not for long is new, finished a few months a go, still missing a pair of drawers and I'm thinking of how to do at least a shelf "dust proof", is in the garage and unfortunately living in northern Queensland in summer is practically uninhabitable, a sauna...somebody have the cat on the bench i have Veronica the chiken... ::)
-
sorry i messed up with the pictures....more
-
I admire your set up for all the room you have available. Not sure about Veronica though ....... :o ;)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks!....I must say that from a modeling point of view Veronica is better than the cat, does not lose hair and is less curious and keeps creepy Crawlings at bay and every now and then in my garage there are itsy-bitsy spiders almost as big as my hand ... but has the bad habit makes his droppings everywhere .... :o
-
Nice workbench, but that chicken is really strange... but as you say, probably better than a cat! Regards, Marc
-
Thanks Monty! ... Veronica likes to sit behind the PC which makes it even more 'strange because I'm at the workbench and I see his head playing hide and seek behind the screen .... ???

Got mine from Hobby Zone USA on Ebay, the owner is Micheal Benoklyn (spelling?) the guy who runs Cybermodeler.
Fantastic service.
Be warned though, the units come as a flat pack and require a lot of assembly.

Got mine direct from Hobbyzone in Poland. I bought them in one large order, it worked out the cheapest way once shipping was included.
As has been said, they arrive flat packed and need glue and masking tape to put together. They come with magnets to be inserted in the sides, top & bottom - this ensure they click together and hold together. Clever, but it can take a while to build them, especially if you buy a lot!
I'd recommend getting the 2 drawer units over the 6 & 3 drawer versions - they are cheaper, quicker to build and offer more flexible storage. I'd also recommend the corner units with the open shelves, rather than the version with drawers - much cheaper and again offering more flexibility. The WIP and open units allow more space for storing larger items, and the paint racks can be made to measure for differing paint sizes - for example, you could have 36mm Tamiya size holes in the 1st row, with 26mm Vallejo or AK Paints in the other rows. As I paint almost exclusively with Tamiya acrylics, I just went went with mostly 36mm.
The free standing tool holder is good.

I did some "window shopping" on the American supplier, lots to choose from! Thanks, both of you for your recommendations and information, much appreciated! 8)

Nice space Guy.
About 10 years ago we remodeled the house and I had the contractor build my shack, 10x16 with AC and Heat.
Air for the air brush is piped underground from the garage so I don't hear when the compressor turns on.
Now 10 years later it needs a bath and a paint job.

I am very lucky to live in a 1950's architecturally designed house with a downstairs studio of about 2.5 m wide x 12 m long = 30 m2 (300 sq ft) which is deep in the bush that surrounds us. It is very peaceful. The original design included many built in cupboards and the house is still entirely original. I may be slightly strange among us as between work sessions I clean everything away - I can't stand mess.
Having all these cupboards help and I know where everything is in my modelling space even if others don't. Our house is three storeys high and I once, years ago bothered to count all the cupboards and drawers that it had - 285! That doesn't include all the built in open shelving which is equal to or exceeds that. But we have our issues with this - mostly that we put stuff away and can't remember where it is. We will need serious help if we ever move as our storage capacity is almost limitless. Lots of people complain about lack of storage - we have too much!

My work area(s):

Evening All,
I have been looking at this thread recently and have to admit that I am more than a little jealous of some of you lucky .......s! I know that I have a bit of a reputation for my Heath Robinson methods but there are times when I really would like to be able to have a go with a lathe to turn some small metal parts. I have bought some sophisticated and modern tools recently - ie a Dremmel drill and soldering iron! However when it comes to workspace I still use my desk which has all sorts of things on it (mostly untidy), and I still use this, after 55 years or more, (I cannot remember the exact number):
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48652150018_7eba585e19_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h8dZbJ)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48652597461_1e8559803f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h8ghcg)
This is my modelling tray - it was given to me by my mother when I started seriously building kits (I was about 10 or 11 years old at the time) and she suggested that I could keep all of the pieces on it and not spill paint on the table or floor: it meant that I did not have to spread newspaper when I wanted to do some modelling. It is probably 80+ years old and is rigid because it is made from paper machie/fibre. It had a floral pattern on it which was very faded and slightly damaged, so I painted it with the Humbrol colours that I had to hand at the time! I put paper over the tray, (an A4 sheet fits perfectly as you can see), and replace it periodically when it gets too messy or torn. I have used this in more places than I care to mention: for 30 years it sat in a drawer waiting for me to pick up the hobby again! The tools on it are the ones I use and have used most of the time - the tweezers on the right are older than me: they were given to me by my father who had no further use for them because they were "worn out" - that was over 55 years ago! I used to have a nail file that was my mothers but that broke and had to be replaced with a new one - I use it to apply body putty and open tins of Humbrol enamels. Circumstances dictate that I have to model on a limited budget, but I also enjoy the challenge of using simple basic tools and techniques to see what I can make - sometimes my accuracy may not be quite 100% but provided that I do not say anything, nobody seems to notice. With my larger models I do have to make jigs which sit on my desk or a spare table, but these are only temporary. All my materials are kept in a small cupboard with drawers, and my references are in my rather large library. I do have two glass cabinets and some perspex boxes to store/display my models and keep the dust off.
In short modelling is integrated into my home - no special place here...!
Stephen.

There is a big improvement for such builds from IKEA:
https://www.ikea.com/de/de/p/kvissle-briefablage-weiss-70198031/
You can remove the drawers, and on each of them has a cork floor. And the lowest level can take a Eduard kit box easily.
I use two of them, and have a safe storage for all painted and glued parts of started biplane kits ;)
Cheers,
Frank

Truly, hand-on-my-heart active builds? Seven: the SPAD (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=12718.0), 1/48 Lavochkin La-9 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=12665.0), and 1/72 Harrier GR.3, Grumman Wildcat and Avenger (both Christmas gifts from my wonderful wife), Bell P-63 Kingcobra and Hawker Tempest Mk.II. There are another five mostly 1/72 builds, all WW2, waiting for bench space or other factors.
Didn't know there were tornados in New Zealand. ;D
You'd be surprised!! I'd love to see one but they always seem to happen 1) several hundred miles from where I live or b) in the same city when I'm asleep (http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5165151/Taranaki-tornados-I-curled-up-into-a-ball-screaming)! On one occasion a funnel formed over my hometown's CBD but I was living elsewhere, and didn't find out until a day or two later. One day!

He left of his own accord, thank you very much! ;D

Probably overwhelmed by what was coming his way.

Not much of a work bench for me at the moment - being in the military means constant moves and changes of address. Third move in 18 months means that again I curse myself for having purchased so many kits over the years...!
And these are just the kits... that doesn't include a similar number of boxes of tools, gear, after market parts, decals, etch, resin, etc, etc, etc.... :o :o
Bless this hobby ;D
Cheers,
BC

Oh Brad, I feel for you! Third move in 18 months?!
-
Brad, you need an old fashioned steamer trunk - the sort that opens like a wardrobe, so that one side would hold a fold-down workbench, the work-in-progress and a clipboard for all your tools etc. The other side would consist of drawers full of paints, decals, glues, brushes, files etc.
Thus on entering new home you just swing open the trunk, plug in the compressor and off you go.
(Obviously you'd still need the 120 storage boxes for the stash.....)

Sandy,
I've seen some folks build some pretty ingenious "build boxes" along the lines of your suggestion. Brad, it might work well for you sir.

Thanks for the great suggestions gents! I've just done the math; 13 moves in 23 years of service (albeit some due to my own home purchases, etc). It's no wonder I have this moving thing down pat :) That's probably why my workbench has never been anything more complicated than a desk and a couple of lamps!
Cheers,

Brad,
I fully understand you after 15 moves in 32 years of service (36 in total)

As you can see, my workbench is rather small, but for my scale it does not really matter. :)

Seeing both Zac's and Ondra's workspace, I can't think of a bigger contrast :o
Willem

I don't think Ondra is showing us the full picture - where is the battery of huge magnifying glasses to see what in earth you are doing? (I even have problems seeing the whole Camel fuselage on his workbench, let alone its innards!)

Camel? What Camel? Where?

Well, my boxes of kits have been moved to their new location and have broken free, to arrange themselves in a rather well behaved manner. Here is my stash in its entirety (save those that I intend to 'collect' and not build):

I stopped counting the number of kits I have when I worked out i'd need another couple of lifetimes to finish these, at the rate I build...!
Cheers,
Brad

Thanks for giving us a look into your candystore Brad. ;)
I think I have about 1/3 of what you have, but with the same "problem": I need more than 1 lifetime to build them.
In my defence: my wife has the same thing, only with books ;D
So, to keep things in balance; when she buys a book, I buy....

I've had the same mindset for a wee while and decided to do something about it this year. So, all my car kits, WWII stuff and the bigger WNW (which I don't have big enough cabinets to display) went on eBay.
Well, after three months I'd cleared more than 8,000 GBP!!!
Unfortunately I seem to have bought so many books since, that the stash is the same size - just books as well as kits!
Glad to see you've got other scales than just the wee guys in there - nice collection.
Sandy

Brad, the 1/48 part of your stash looks very common to mine, old kits from BlueMax, Flashback, the old Eduards, Karaya, HiTech ...
I stopped counting the number of kits I have when I worked out i'd need another couple of lifetimes to finish these, at the rate I build...!
I can really recommend Scalemates.com for stash management, what a cool web site! The usage is a bit different to what we know, but really clever.

Brad, what's your address again? ;D

Camel? What Camel? Where?
Willem, the fuselage of the Camel is in the middle of the green mat, on top of the alu vice.

Addition to the bench.
My spray booth can now move up and down on my new standing table. I bought the powered frame from Amazon for a bargain, cut and stained some particle board for the top and bob's you father's brother.

Hey gang,
I'm just getting back into the game after a 10-year hiatus. All my old supplies are in storage on the other side of the continent, so I've assembled a humble new arsenal in my NYC apartment. My 'workbench' is simply an old wooden tool box I picked up at a second-hand shop up near Harlem. I store it in the closet when not in use and use my kitchen table as my workspace:
(https://i.imgur.com/220zlIvm.jpg).(https://i.imgur.com/spd47uBm.jpg).(https://i.imgur.com/tOv2F0Pm.jpg).(https://i.imgur.com/hcLB75tm.jpg).(https://i.imgur.com/7uOTgRCm.jpg)
I'm planning to trick the toolbox out a bit but for now it has an upper tier housing its original wooden slide tray to hold paints and a plastic container of essential tools. I want to build a second tray but for the time being I found a cardboard box that fits perfectly up top and serves as a 'flat file', for sandpaper, decals, sheet styrene, plans and various accessories. Down below I have a few larger supplies including my airbrush, a pair of magnifying glasses (have never used before), and a few starter kits to practice on.
The only airbrush I ever used in the past was my grandfather's single-action Paasche from the 1940s. I've no room now for a noisy compressor with air hoses, so for a birthday give I received this great cosmetic airbrush with built-in compressor that charges via USB. Having only used enamel paints in the past I was at a loss as to what to use these days. I first went to Tamiya but have to confess I don't really like them for airbrushing. I have some AK Interactive to try further, but I really like the MRP lacquers the best so far. Instead of the old Dremel I bought a simple battery-powered rotary manicure tool. It's low power keeps me from accidentally melting or gouging plastic.
If I were stranded on a desert isle the basic five tools I'd be sure to bring are: x-acto knife, micro saw blade, flexifile, and a pinvise. Do you have a favorite tool I should know about that you rely on for every build and find irreplaceable?
-
I cannot write which are my favourite tools, but I do work from a limited space with a limited range of hand tools. See my modelling tray on page 3 of this site if you are interested. I do not use a spray gun - just hairy sticks!

Only now getting around to sharing a photo of the work bench. As you can see, pretty simple... a desk, lamp, airbrush, photobox, and some drawers where everything is pretty much shoved in. One day i'll actually get around to better setting things up to have all of my major tools to hand... i've been saying that for 20 odd years or so though...!

As an aside, my latest project, which is taking up plenty of my time, but she deserves it :)

Well, here's my stuff, spread over the house. The workspace itself is in the livingroom / kitchen.
The cabinet with the folders (documents, drawings, photographs etc., etc.) is in the hall.
And in the attic I have the spraybooth, a cabinet with paints, thinners, brushes and other stuff, the stash, more tools, and a few boxes with scratch materials (wood, paper, plastics, metals and whatnot.)
It would like to have everything in the same room, but there is simply not enough space in our house.
