I will be showing photos here of my Wingnuts Sopwith Dolphin build but it won't be a full build log, the build log can be found on my website; https://ww1aircraftmodels.com/page59.html where there is a detailed description of the build.
The build so far has been very enjoyable, the kit itself is a remarkable piece of engineering with excellent detail and very pricise fit of parts. Main issue to date was fitting the engine to the fuselage frame, quite a bit of manipulation was needed to get the engine to site correctly but it did eventually go into position without any damage. I replaced the 16 plastic moulded spark plugs with 16 aluminium spark plugs from RB Motion.

You've got a good colour on that copper header tank, very subtle. Copper as it oxidises goes from a surprising pink to a dull brown. That looks just right
Nice work

I scoped out your build log Des: Outstanding per usual. As mentioned your use of paint to replicate tones and hues is truly an example of the modelers art. I am glad to see I am not alone in finding the engine to frame assembly a bit "challenging." I wonder if putting the engine in first and then the magazine/IP assembly wouldn't ease that assembly? I think that is the most critical part of the whole build as the entire front alignment rests on the engine/magazine/I.P. and oil tank assembly to all be in alignment otherwise, the engine hood won't sit properly and the gun barrels will be off as well. Do you plan on displaying the model with the engine hood off to show off that engine detail? I will be following your build as I get back to mine.

Beautiful Des!
I’ve just started mine and I’m wondering how to neatly tackle the internal rigging? Not a lot of plastic/ space to play with!
Proving to be a popular kit...
Guy
-
Ps is there something wrong with the engine dimensions then? Or is it just a tight fit?
Guy
-
Not bad. So you've built a model before? ;)
Steve
-
Outstanding as always Des. Now I have three great builds to look at for my Dolphin!
RAGIII

Very nice work, Des, the detail you've added is impressive to say the least. How have you done the hose clamps on all the copper lines, they look far to "crisp" for painted versions? The ignition harness is eye catching as well, a real challenge in my experience when using wire however yours are perfect!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Gobsmacked....as usual!
Stephen.
-
Thanks very much guys for all your wonderful comments, they are much appreciated.
Guy - The engine dimensions are probably correct to scale, it is just a tight fit in the frame, main issue is getting the magnetos to slide under the magazine boxes. I added ignition leads to my magnetos so they may have contributed to the tightness of fit.
Lance - For the hose clamps I simply cut a length of Tamiya tape to 0.3mm wide, then I "paint" the thin piece of tape with an Artline 900XF Silver Metallic Ink marking pen, once dry I then cut the tapes into short lengths then wrap it around each hose, small adjustments to the position of the tape can be made using a tooth pick, a small drop of CA holds it in place perfectly.
Steve - Yep, I've made one or two models in the past :)
Mark - Once all the internals were fitted and the engine added I did a trial fit of the two fuselage sides thinking that they be a bit tight as well, to my surprise they were a perfect fit if no interference at all with the fuselage frame, engineering at its finest.

Your typical top end craftsmanship, Des! Like all your builds, a joy to follow.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Wow, Des! an other proof of your outstanding craftsmanship.
Chapeau,
Manni
-
I managed to button up the fuselage today, it went together extremely well, even the front cowl and top cowl fitted with no issues what so ever.

Very neat Des...

Very nice Des as usual.
This is proving to be a very popular model indeed and it is easy to see why given the superb builds on this web site. One suggestion if I may, check orientation of the Aldis sight.
Regards
Mick

splendid work..
Xan
-
As usual Des, turning out to be quite beauty.
-
Looking outstanding as always. You are encouraging me to work a little harder on my build 8)
RAGIII

Wow, you don't loose time to tackle the newest release. Awesome progress till now, I love the engine in particular!
Best regards
Borsos

Thanks Mick for pointing out the Aldis site error :-[ it has now been corrected
Des.

Just got this kit and am tempted to start it now :P I do have a question, I took a quick look at the RB Motion site for the spark plugs. I don't see 1/32 listed did you use another scale ?
-
Yes Derrick, I used the 1:24 scale aluminium spark plugs, they are so close it doesn't matter and look really good once fitted
Des.
-
As per the comments above, wonderful work.
What did you use for the "wrappings" on the fuselage to wing attachment tubing cross brace wires?
Ed
-
Great start on your Dolphin, Des! It’s wonderful to see so many in the works. They sure did cram a lot into the nose of these!
-
A masterclass in model making.
-
That is a really good progress on the next Dolphin here!
This invites me to start my CSM 1/48 one too, but I want to stick for now on already running projects.
Your big one seems to be a great kit,. have fun with the build!
Cheers,
Frank

I completed the fuselage by adding the machine guns and windscreen then added some paint. I used a mix of 2.5 Humbrol Matt 155 to 1 of Humbrol Gloss 10, the photos show it as being more green than what it actually is, the true colour is leaning more towards brown, damn camera.
The decals are the usual Wingnuts top quality and applied very easily over a coat of clear gloss, no decal set solution was needed but I did use a hair dryer to finish off. I used the kit supplied decals for the rudder, they also went on very easy.
The entire fuselage has been given a coat of satin clear, the instructions call for a gloss on the forward half of the fuselage but when I did this it made the model look very toyish/unrealistic.

Lovely Des!
But you’re doing MY colour scheme! How dare you! ;D
You’ve also made me realise I’ve missed additional rigging on the struts.... :o
Guy

Clean and GORGEOUS paint work as always Des!
RAGIII
-
Dangit Des, I wasn't going to buy anymore WNW kits. How am I supposed to do that when you make it look so much fun?
-
Very sharp!!!
Steve
-
Cool, clean build, paintjob looks great, too.
Bye,
Manni
-
A question. Can the engine cowl be left unglued in order to display the engine?
-
The engine cowl could be left unglued, it is a nice neat fit so would sit quite comfortably, the only issue would be the machine guns which are a very neat fit into the cowl.
Des.
-
Looking good Des: As mentioned, nice paint and decal work. You gotta pay attention to those little photo insets throughout the instructions for decal placement. That engine and cockpit alignment with all of that stuff there can be a real challenge and you made it through that in good order. Looking forward to the next update.
-
The bottom wing is now fitted along with the undercarriage, after removing all traces of paint the wing and undercarriage just fell into place. The wing mounted machine guns are also fitted. The top wing has just been fitted with no glue to show what the model will look like. All of the struts have been painted, I have also painted the bomb rack and the bombs, just waiting for it all to dry

Very nice Des, looks mean with the wing-mounted guns!
-
Really like how she is coming along Des. Like the additional wing guns, looks mean....
-
Another masterpiece in the making, Des! Your paint and decal work are flawless, as always.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Lookin good Des. The overall green scheme looks menacing. The guns on the wing give it an aggressive look. Looking forward to seeing you wrap this one up. Outstanding work all around.
-
Hi mates,
I'm back and I'm always fond of your work, Des. ;)
Best regards.
Alain.

Lovely Des,
We seem to be at identical stages.
Guy
-
Looks stunning Des... but then that was what one expects fro your talented hands.
RAGIII

An all-green dress suits her perfectly as well. Very nice progress, Des!
Best regards
Andreas

Ditto all the above comments !!
Ed
-
very nice!!!
Steve
-
Great progress, Des. The guns on the wings look great, too.
Bye,
Manni
-
This looks really great Des. I go away for a few weeks at the beach and you build a perfect rendition of a nearly completed plane. That seems so quick but it looks very far from speedily done.
Cheers
Alistair
-
As always, magnificent work Des,
I like the pc10 cowl colour which looks a bit different from the other variants offered in the kit.
You must be getting close to tackling the rigging soon?
Following along with interest.
A pity much of the engine detail is hidden under the engine cowls, but the aircraft looks better with the distinctive cowls fitted to the model imho.
Looking forward to the next steps with your build.
Dave :)
-
Very fine modelling, Des. As per your usual standard!
I must confess, that the more Dolhpins being built I see and the more I work on mine, the more I like the type!
-
Very beautiful build, Des, and most interesting, too! I just jumped onto this thread and - although not being to fond of the Dolphin, will come here more regularly, now!
