Hello everyone,
Here are some pictures of my latest completion, the Encore (Roden) 1/72 Pfalz D.III. This is their “Blue Max” boxing, which depicts the aircraft flown by Ltn Bruno Stachel (George Peppard) in the 1966 movie “The Blue Max”. If you haven’t seen this aviation classic, I strongly recommend it.

The kit was built with the addition of the PART photo-etched set. The kit itself is a bit rough around the edges, and requires a bit of refinement, but it looks like a Pfalz. The Lozenge decal is from Aviatik, and presents some better colours than those included in the kit. These decals are excellent; translucent (which makes them good for pre-shading), very thin, durable, and able to be contorted across compound curves (mostly). This was especially useful given the compound curves of the fuselage; I didn’t get it perfect but I was happy enough in the end. Rigging is from Uschi brand elastic.
I didn’t go for a ‘movie perfect’ model; rather, I built is as a ‘normal’ Pfalz (though I did mix up the D.III and D.IIIa parts, deliberately), with the markings broadly representative of the movie aircraft.
Here’s some pics of the model:

I also decided it would be cool to mount this one to a more appropriate base:

I added a pilot from the spares box, with a rather stern looking head from an Airfix BE-2C crewman, and a scarf made from foil. I tried to replicate a spinning propeller, but nothing I tried or looked at really looked convincing, so I simply made a prop-less spinner from scrap plastic.
Overall this was a fun little build. Good hunting, herr Leutnant!

Nicely done Brad, the second Base with the Blue Max incorporated is brilliant. Ltn. Stachel is no doubt proud!

That’s outstanding Brad!
Love the lozenge, no idea how you got that around the fuselage! The pilot is excellent too! Where did you get him?

Hi Guy - the fuselage lozenge was cut using a template before application. The Encore kit comes with some pre-cut lozenge for each fuselage half, but I wanted a complete wrap-around look, given the actual aircraft had the pattern painted. I used the Encore lozenge as a starting point for making my own template from masking tape, which I tested and adjusted a number of times to fit. I took that template and used it as a template for both the paint masking (given the lozenge decals from Aviattic are translucent, they need a light base coat), and for cutting the decal itself. That meant the decal and paint mask matched, so there would (in theory) be no overlapping. It was 90% successful; there were still some overlaps, and still some wrinkles, but I managed to get some of them out by careful cutting and application of decal softener.
A picture of some of the masks / templates I used is attached.
The pilot body I had in the spares box (not sure exactly which kit it came from, but I recollect it came from an aircrew set somewhere), the head came from one of the two pilots included in the Airfix BE-2C kit.
Hopefully this helps?
Cheers,
BC

Brad,
WOW, that is really, REALLY COOL. First the airplane is AMAZING for 1/72 scale. And then I like what you did with the base - fantastic presentation.

Lovely little Pfalz, Brad. As one expects of anything coming from your bench.

Brilliant presentation!!

Very cool! I see you went with the fill-spinner-and-remove-prop-blades option :)

Terrific and attractive small scale brilliance, as usual, from you, Brad.

That is absolutely beautiful. Perfectly displayed. I was 10 when I saw that movie in a theatre in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and it is still my favourite.

First thing I thougt was, where did he get the big Humbrol bin from.....then I realized it's 72nd scale. Love it. Very, very nice! And the presentation is the highlight
