Post by: Des on June 26, 2013, 08:52:51 AM
David Wilson has sent me these photos that he took while at the Auckland War Memorial, many thanks David.

This photo shows the Avro 504 and SE.5a propellers

Propellers from the Avro 504, the SE.5a and the Nieuport 17

Image of a WW1 flying coat (true to colour)

This photo shows the same flying jacket but without the flash on the camera, David said that the first image with flash is a true to colour photo of the flying coat. This is a very good example of how we can be mislead by colours in photographs.

Nice pics. Just want to be sure - the re-charging lever is the thing that looks like a big knuckle duster not the small (wooden?) knob above the "cog" teeth?

From what I can work out they both do the same thing, but the small lever is pushed forward to charge the gun (awkward, I guess, in cramped cockpit) the big lever is pulled back.

Actually the "wooden" handle is deceptive -- the knob is steel, in this case rusty so it looks like it might be a lovely hunk of oak or something.

Notice too the details of the safety at the rear of the gun. That's something I want to try to tackle next time.

Hi Bo,

Here is an image from another angle of a Spandau as displayed in the Museum of Flight at Bieing Field, Seattle , which I took last week.
You can just see that some of the components are made from what looks like brass, and the steel colour of the cocking handle is apparent.
I have also seen the Spandau in the New Zealand War Memorial, Auckland which is in poorer condition as seen in the previous pictures.

awesome! thank you for sharing that, Dave.

Folks, this is the style of cocking levers that belongs in your Albatrosen and Fokker Dr.1s

Glad to be able to help out!

Here is another, again from the Seattle Museum of Flight which had a display of a German seatbelt, some Bosch spark plugs, a small Albatross logo, and a few other bits and pieces.
They all came from Doug Champlins collection.

Sorry the pictures aren't as sharp as I would like, but I was photographing through glass display cabinets and in very low light conditions. A pity as it is quite difficult to take pictures in these conditions.

Some interesting artifacts here if you ever get the opportunity to visit.
