Hallo everybody, here I am with my new build: Revell Airco DH 2 in 1/144 scale
The box says it’s a 144 and TBH that’s the reason why I took it off the shelf in the model shop round the corner, I wouldn’t make another 72 after the Albie W4… But when I opened and measured the wingspan …
AAAAAAARGH
I realized it’s another 72!!!!
But now the match has started and I must play!
So here is some pictures and information, and perhaps some questions to the experts!
Here is the box and the main sources from where I will take information and inspiration:
After some study I decided the version I will build is s/n. 6011 - flight C - 24th Squadron RFC, Bertangles, France, July 1916.
According to Windsock and also the instuction sheet Flight C had the outer struts painted in blue / white and the wheel discs in blue.
Many profiles depict this in red / white, but Les Rogers in his monumental book confirms the colours were Red for Flight A, Black for Flight B and Blue for Flight C.
I have seen pictures of the lane after it was captured by Germans and while Oswald Boelcke inspects it, several details are visibly different in those pictures and in the kit, here are some decisions I submit here for your validation:
4 blades Propeller in the photo / 2 blades in the kit: I realized the 4 blades prop was adopted for DH2s, the pictures are dated Nov. 1916 while my version is dated July same year, therefore I assume the 2 blades prop can be a correct interpretation… (also because I don’t have a compatible 4 blades prop!)
The profile found in Ray Rimell publication shows the back outer strut in solid blue, but the picture shows it has 2 white stripes, what about the front outer strut?
24th Squadron invented the sawtooth pattern beneath the nacelle, and from the pictures it is clearly shown, so I’ll paint it, the colour of the teeth (according to Les Rogers) was either PC10 or Black, I’m not sure what colour to use, maybe PC10 would look more real in continuity with the other surfaces.
The tank which is set on the upper wing is shown clearly displaced on the left, while normally it was mounted at the center of the upper wing, I was not able to see how the tube connecting the tank to the nacelle (I suppose it ends in the engine…) goes.
I have found somewhere the design of pitot tube used for the DH2 where was it placed exactly?
-
Now let’s open the box: the kit is really dreadful, many flashes and moulding signs coming out of the plastic…
The cockpit is totally missing any detail… instead of the seat there is a sort of gangway seat divided in two parts…
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/004.jpg)
I measured the real seat dimensions from the Windsock and made it using my graphic editor
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/005.jpg)
Printed on thick paper, cut off
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/006.jpg)
And glued with Elmers glue...
Here it is dry fitted in the nacelle while the astonished pilot stares at it.
As you can see the poor guy is affected by liquid retention and I regret to say he’ll get assigned to a non operational job...
I hope to finish this by the end of the year, because on January 1 on the Italian forum I am in (MAB) starts a Great War Campaign and I want to be in whithout anything pending on my bench!
-
Let’s go further in exploring the sins of this kit
Underside of the upper wing: here are the notches where the tail booms will fit, too much similar to salami…
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/009.jpg)
I took away the salami
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/010.jpg)
Upper surface: I scribed the ailerons and created the center section joint lines
I filled the hole where the upper tank should have put, although the position is correct, the shape of the tank is totally wrong
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/011.jpg)
Lower wing, same operation
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/012.jpg)
Here is the tank, I imagine they have take nit from an old motorcycle, look at its real shape on the profile:
I build a tail using styrene
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/014.jpg)
Filled the gap with putty and added details
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/015.jpg)
Then I turn my attention to the cockpit clearing the useless extruded numbers, writings and molding signs
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/017.jpg)
Cleared the absurd apron put on the MG opening
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/018.jpg)
(I bought this Lewis on ebay to replace the shapeless worm provided by the kit)
I added some more details to the cockpit, the rudder bar handle is provisional
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/019.jpg)
On the right the column where the MG will go, it is not finished yet. The black dot on the nose’s floor represents the position of the MG column behind which the rudder pedals will be placed
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/020.jpg)
Here is a general view of the pieces done so far, on the cockpit side walls I glued some plasticard to simulate the wooden framework, I will glue the internal rigging after priming and painting them of course…
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/021.jpg)
-
Great job.
I built on of these just for rigging practice. I would chang out the booms to something stronger as the kit ones snap over time as the alignment with the tail is not quite correct and puts a strain on the top boom. I fixed the port side one then the starboard one snapped later.
-
Thanks Yorki for your advice, I'll keep it in mind!!!!

Hei Antonio!
I really can't imagine how you manage to deal with such a small scale!!!
I'll follow you closely!
ciao
Edo
-
Andonio,
I'm always impressed when someone takes on an inferior Kit and, through a lot of effort and skill, produces a great result. You are certainly enjoying a real challenge with this one however your results are impressive; looking forward to more as you craft this lump of plastic into a true winner!
Nice work so far, and in a very small scale as well.
Cheers,
Lance :)
-
Thanks, Lance and Edo, I agree with you about the scale, as I wrote in the post "incipit" I took for granted it was a 144 scale which would have meant just a few pieces to glue aand a few paintbrush strokes to have it in my showcase as a toy, but it is a 72, now I'll build it (She'll not win!) and set it aside my Albatros W4, I have just another base like the one I used for the German seaplane and make a good diptych. I swear is the last 72 I'll make, too small!!!
Nevertheless I have no problem in the quality of the kit, (I already made a SMER SVA5 which was as dreadful as this) I do my best when things get tough and I have fun in modifying them!
Ciao
Antonio

Hi Antonio,
Great work on such a kit indeed and I'm sure you'll turn her into a beauty.
That machine gun looks great and very well detailed in such a small scale. What brand is it?
Cheers
Flip
-
Hi Flip, thanks for your appreciation, the MG is a Mini - world item, really great detail, I haven't yet received it will post some pics of the gun asap.
have a look here (http://henk.fox3000.com/miniworld.htm), I purchased it on ebay.
:o
-
Hi Antonio
Thanks for the link! Those machine guns are amazing. hard to believe it's 1/72 scale.
Have been thinking about tackling one of those 1/72 eduard kits. Sure will keep these guns in mind :-)
Cheers
Flip
-
Brilliant start, Antonio! I wouldn't even be able to see the sprue tree, let alone the parts. Those guns are amazing. There's nothing like that in 1/48 scale.
Cheers,
Bud

andonio64,
You're to be commended on taking on such as task as this old crate. I remember it from my youth, but I wouldn't be troubled by it now. You are storing up gold in modeling heaven by the charity you are showing this kit. ;)

Warren, they already offered me a "San AnDonio" job up there, but I'm still too busy with sinning down here...

Excellent start on what appears to be a fairly difficult kit, the work you have done so far is very good and I look forward to seeing you progress with this one.

Great work on smartening up a basic kit. Perhaps the WNW DH2 instructions could help you with detailing?
-
Antonio,
Excellent first progress my old friend. I'm looking forward to seeing you turn a sows ear into a silk purse.

Antonio,
really impressive work on this old kit! Great start with the detailing. I think your seat looks Terrific in this scale!

Nice work so far on this classic!!
Steve
-
Hello Andonio:
I am enjoying your build, but more than your building and modeling prowess your comments are most amusing. You are right; the fuel tank looks like an old Harley Davidson Sportster tank. You are doing amazing work with a crappy kit. Your description of the boom attachment points on the wing looking like sausages just cracked me up. But; you are right!
Best
Mark
-
Great work Andonio. An interesting solution to the seat, it's very effective!
Andrew
-
I love the logic that you were hoping it was 1:144 because 1:72 is too small. :D
Like Mark, your comments have me laughing out loud (wife: "what are you reading that is so funny?" )
Great work so far!

:D :D :D :D :D :D
Tony, I'm glad I bring some laugh with my comments!!!!!
I try to put some irony here and there not to take this hobby too seriously!!!!
My concern is that a 72 is too small for me but it deserves anyway a good treatment to turn the best out of the kit, I bought the box thinking that 144 would have been a way of having a sort of gadget to be kept in my showcase with a couple of days work and no rigging...
Best wishes to everybody!!!!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I have gone a bit further and spent the last modeling session in studying the rigging schema.
I decided to make the double wires as a single wire, to keep my mind as safe as possible!!!!.
Pictures asap!
-
Here they are:
detailed study of the rigging schema, it's really a mess, I should study how to place the eyelets I normally use for fixing the wire, still thinking to how to manage the tail booms rigging, as I would try to use a single wire as far as possible, but there is not enough plastic to pierce without compromising the strength of the pieces...
then here are some details I worked on
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/024.jpg)
On the nacelle: oil and fuel caps, air intake (it is scarcely visible but it's hollow)
Fuel tank to be placed behind the seat
Compass fairing to go under the nacelle floor
Fixing slips for the gravity tank
Moreover I pierced the tail planes and rudder to insert self made control horns.
Tomorrow I'll pierce the two wings to insert self made control horns and prime everything.
Any suggestion for the seat belts? Which type was used and where to find inspiration to self build them?
Goodnight!!!!
-
love(!!!) seeing your sketchbook, i do similar things when I am trying to work something out, but my drawings aren't nearly as pretty!
-
Antonio,
Outstanding update my old friend. I do love seeing these old classics like this being built up in the hands of such a talented and skilles modeler. Looking forward to your next update.

Interesting work. Like your notes too!!
Steve
-
Thanks my friends, I made some holes for the control horns on the wings, prepared the horns themselves, glued some other pieces to fit the cables, then I just painted the pieces using gray primer for all the nacelle items and the flying surfaces: top of wings and tail planes, fixed part of the rudder.
Tomorrow will use white primer for the bottom of wings and tail planes and for the rudder (I plan to paint it, not to use the decals).
I am just back from a Christmas choir concert in an old church near my town, really touching atmosphere, children, youngsters and adults all singing together... it makes the world look better!
Goodnight everyone
PS How would you de-saturate PC10 to highlight the wing ribs? I never had this problem with dark surfaces...
-
Here is a link to a complete rigging guide for the DH.2, just scroll through the file to get to each page, it is very easy to follow but is quite complex. This is the guide I followed when rigging my DH.2.

Thank you so much for posting that Des, Tim West does some great work. Saved to my favorites for when I feel brave enough to tackle my stash of Eduard 1/72nd DH2's. :P
Andonio, you keep on keeping on. You're inspiring a great many of us I'm sure.

Thanks Warren, and thanks to Des as well for posting that link.
I already knew that document and I have been using it to get the most out of it.
I hope to make further steps tonight when I'll be back from work.

Hallo everybody, here is progress I succeeded to make during these holidays:
- Seatbelts, copied after an Eduard PE fret I cut them from a tin toothpaste tube
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/025.jpg)
- Upper part of the nacelle with the small holes ready to receive the rigging starting from there
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/026.jpg)
- Sides of the nacelle, I tried to replicate on the inner sides of the cockpit the CDL stained by the PC 10 coating of the outside.
The two external sides appear to have a different shade of color but it was just because of an uneven lighting.
The one which on my monitor appears closer to the real effect is the darker one (right)
- Here is the cockpit floor, before the two sides are closed. I'll close them after I mount the Lewis MG stand and the dashboards.
Everything you see in the cockpit is scratch built.
Thanks for looking and I wish you all a beautiful 2013!
-
Happy New Year, Antonio! Outstanding progress.
Cheers,
Bud
-
I tip my hat to you fellows modelling in 1/72 scale. Congratulations on your progress to date, especially that seatbelt assembly!
Cheers,
Chris
-
Antonio,
Wonderfull progress my old friend. I'm really enjoying following this excellent thread as the DH-2 is one of my favorites. Even more impressive to me is the scale of this latest project. DH-2's aren't known to be the easiest builds in the world and your chosen scale makes this one even more special. Keep up the outstanding progress.

Hallo and thanks everybody...
here are my latest development:
I prepared the surfaces for some preshading the bottom surfaces were primered in white to hold the CDL while the upper surfaces will be painted in PC10 and I will try a different way of getting the ribs enhanced.
"Half-dry" brush over the surfaces
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/030.jpg)
Here is the tailpiece: the small dents that appear on the borders of the three colors are barely seen by the naked eye...
The fin and the rudder broke apart while handling them, I think there will be no problem in glueing them together again...
For the White field I used a Misterkit (Bianco sporco Regia Marina MK-RM09) off-white which I find great! In the picture it's not well appraisable
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/032.jpg)
I am using it to paint the bottom of the nacelle.
I decide to leave open the back of the nacelle so there will be the possibility to see through where the oil tank was. Here is how the two tanks were housed.
Here's my solution (the top of the nacelle was just laid on the tanks).
I will glue them after installing the rigging cables departing from the nacelle.
This is the nose table through which the Lewis stand goes.
(the shaft will be shortened after the cockpit will be closed)
Two coats of PC10 and a slight sanding (1200 grain) of the tailplanes, I wanted to give the ribs some worn-out contrast... I drilled holes for the rigging and slots for the self made control horns ...
Here is the engine I'll try to reproduce.
The 9 cylinders are not easy to distribute symmetically on the circular structure....
During this week I should try to complete the engine and start painting the CDL.
Thanks for looking!

I will paint it tomorrow and add the stems for the valves and the spark plug ignition wires

Nice work, Antonio. Quite an improvement over the kit engine.

-
Thanks Bud, I know the beams going to the cylinder valves are too thick, but at the moment I have no thinner plasticard rods so I had to prepare dinner with what I have in the fridge!!!
:-)
-
A few steps ahead!
Here is the Lewis MG I purchased from Miniworld, it's a real jewel, and supplies also a micro PE fret for the ammunition drum handle and for different sights
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/046.jpg)
I started creating the frame which holds it (I made some more but don't have pics yet)
This is the instrument panel made with APC decals
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/045.jpg)
CDL on the lower surfaces
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/047.jpg)
Decals and some attempt of wheathering
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/048.jpg)
PC10 on the upper sufraces
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/052.jpg)
I prepared the cables that come out of the nacelle here they are while hanged to dry
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/050.jpg)
once dried glued them from inside the nacelle itself
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/051.jpg)
some paint and dirty on the gravity tank
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/054.jpg)
the wheels... I know the tyres are too thick, but at the moment I have nothing to replace them...
just some mud traces
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/055.jpg)
I started working on the struts: from the picture taken at the Boelcke inspection of the captured 6011 it appears the outer back struts have this design, so I had to choose between two possible alternatives.
I chose the one indicated by the arrow, where I turned red into blue
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/056.jpg)
here they are
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/057.jpg)
here are the inner struts painted in battleship gray and with the half height marking
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/058.jpg)
then I closed the sides of the nacelle but I had the front piece going out of the profile on the port side
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/061.jpg)
it was easy to sand off the part coming out
but consequentially on the starboard alignment it stayed inside the side profile...
so I had to use putty and then sand ferociusly
On the bottom side of the nacelle I closed the gaps with a layer of CA glue, then I sanded.
The arrow indicates the starboard problem.
I have to close the top part of the nacelle with all its 12 cables then re-paint everything.
I hope to do some more work later this afternoon, by now that's all!
Ciao

Hi friends,
I did not model a lot during last 2 weeks, neither I was often on the forums I follow, but made some advancements, mostly during this weekend...
Sawtooth pattern typical of No.24 Sq. painted beneath the nacelle. I also scratch built the compass fairing, then put in place the ailerons rigging below the lower wing as you cab see in the detailed view...
This pic aims at showing the compass fairing shape from the side
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/071.jpg)
The great Oswald Boelcke is inspecting the captured 6011 : see sawtooth, compass fairing and outer rear strut painted in the banded pattern
Below are the outer struts painted
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/063.jpg)
I had to correct the sides of the nacelle, which in the kit had a vertical edge instead of the real shape as shown by the red triangles here, I also added the wires as shown in white in the picture.
This is the curved sloped piece which appears beneath the engine in some pictures, I guess to take used oil and other rubbish out, scratch built.
This is the completed assembly. The 2 horizontal bars will hold the engine in place.
That's all by now, thanks for your attention

Hello Antonio:
Great work and progress on this kit. I have to hand it to you for sticking to it. I would have given up a long time ago, but you are making good progress and your abilities and craftsmanship are top notch.
I like your analogy about supper and what is in the fridge.
Keep up the good work, and keep those pictures and color commentary coming.

Hallo everybody,
I made a little progress: the tail booms, so tiny and brittle, I prepared a sort of jig to keep the pieces up and straight
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/077.jpg)
Here are the two pieces:
And here is the way I used he jig
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/079.jpg)
But before joining the two parts I rigged them:
Here is the tail piece completed
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/081.jpg)
I added the transversal piece corresponding to the rearmost struts, it adds some stiffness and as you all know that piece existed in the real plane but not in the kit!!!!
Thanks for the attention!!!

Hello Antonio:
Thanks for the correction, I have been watching too many "Mr. Moto" detective movies lately. I remember building this kit over 40 years ago during the "Summer of Modeling". I didn't rig it. I don't know how you do or did it in that wee tiny scale, but it is looking good.
"Molto Bene"

lol I blame autocorrect fail (http://www.autocorrectfail.org/) for molto changing to motto
anyway keep up the nice work :)

Hallo fellows modelers,
after some time I was kept away from the workbench I started over again, although not yet at full steam....
Here are some pics of the completed tail sub assembly:
I thought a lot aboput how to let the wire go through the booms / struts but the piece was so thin I preferred not to pierce it in any way.
So I passed the line "around" the booms, it's not the best but it's not very evident, unless one magnifies the pictures !!!
Then I added that sort of sield to the top edge of the engine housing, the top of the nacelle was not correctly shaped in the kit
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/086.jpg)
I inserted the eyelets in the lower wing (where shown by the arrows)
on the bottom of the inner struts there are at least 4 lines going through so I prepared myself bigger eyelets to let all those wires go through
(http://www.andonio.it/model/dh2/089.jpg)
Last thing I did was the pitot tube:
this is my try, too small to get it better than this...
... painted

Thanks for your attention
