Hi!
Back to the forum with a new thread after long time.
I've never ceased to follow, but I had some busy times, so no time to take pictures and upload on the forum.
Back to topic...
Model: 1/32 Roden DH2 - kit number 612
Aftermarket: eduard PE 32645
Paints: MrPaint, Tamiya, Lifecolor
Why choose a Roden kit when there's a Wingnut one?
Well, first of all it's out of production and only available on a duellists box,
and second because once in a while it's good to stay away from the shake and bake kits and save some money!
Lets see a bit of content ( if you have probem seeing the images let me know, I've uploaded to a personal web space):
Box cover ( I like it a lot):
Sprues:
Main parts, some nice details with some flash:
I think I see some ejector marks, can you see them? [biggrin]
But details are pretty good. You can see also a comparison with Wingnut weapons. I'll see if it's worth to scratch the support to use the wingnut one.
Other details
(http://www.andymodels.altervista.org/dh2/09.jpg)
Wings. Not bad. the detail is subtle but it's there.
Sprue with tail booms and other bits.
Engine (I'll see if replace with a taurus one):
Decals.... The blue it's completely wrong I think (a comparison with a more realistic blue), I'll apint the roundels and I'll see others how they will go on...
Instructions. Very basic.
Pe from Eduard. There's also a prepainted fret, I'll show it to you during the build.
That's all for content. A good base, but it definitely needs some wor.
I've not decided the scheme yet, I'll show it to you in next post.
The first work is to prepare some parts for the build.
The tail booms are supposed to be joined to the wings and tailplane with a butt joint... not a good idea!!!
So I've drilled both the booms terminal and insertion ponts on wing and tailplane with a 0.5 mm drill.
Then I'll insert a piece of copper wire to give some strenght to the join and have some reference ponts when Iì'll join all.
That's all for today.
In the next posts I'll show you some major surgery [biggrin]
Happy modelling!
Andrew

Nice selection Andrew (the WNW Duellist boxing is also OOP). Looks like a great beginning to this little fellow. Looking forward to your updates and treatment. Pulling up a chair. :D
-
I always enjoy watching a pusher being put together so I will be in the front row too. Looking forward to more.
Stephen.

You are taking on a real challenge here Andrew. Don't forget Des has a complete build of this model in the Gallery here and Bob's Buckles website has an outstanding tutorial on the very complex rigging that could save you a lot of angst! I'm looking forward to following your progress, one of my favorite WW.I Aircraft!
Cheers,
Lance

This will be interesting to watch, good luck

Roden kits get a lot of bad press these days. It's good to see someone tackling one. I am looking forward to your build of this kit. I recently did their Sopwith Triplane and it turned out pretty decent. Keep modeling on

Yes, I saw Des build, very useful.
About the bob's buckle tutorial: I can't find the page, can someone please help me? ::)

No problem, I'll use WnW instructions.
Thanks! ;)

First let me say that your build is starting out terrific. Nice work on preparing the booms to be pinned to the wings!
I am looking forward to the next phase of the build! Finally I feel I should Mention that the Tutorial on Bobs site was done by 3D artist Tim West and posted on Bobs site with Permission. Tim originally posted this on the Aerodrome Forum IIRC.

Hi!
I've decided the scheme.
She'll be 7851.
Nice mix of natural linen and painted surfaces, lower left wing taken form another plane, well worn and a few pictures are available.
Plus is one scheme proposed also by Wingnut, so I have some details about her.
I think that I'll use only the tail code from decals and other things will all be painted.
Time for the first major work.
On the real plane the nacelle's sides where covered with canvas.
Roden offers completely flat sides, while on the pictures of the real plane you can see ripples, the underlying structures and other things.
So I've decided to remove the plastic between the wood structure and replace it with thin metal foil.
This is where I'm at the moment. Still some clean up to do, then I'll start to paint the inside of nacelles.
The stitching will be replaced by the Eduard PE one.
that's all.
In the next post I'll go on with the interior
Bye

Hi!
Some updates:
I went on with fuselage.
I scratch built a floor for the cockpit with plasticard, because would be impossible to fill the seam on the floor once assembled.
Then I've looked at the point where the struts go into the fuselage. In this area the cowling is made from thin metal, so I've decided to open the hole and thin the edges, leaving an area where to glue the strut... I hope it will be enough! I've also added a plate on the rear missing from the model. At this stage I've painted the fuselage frame in wood color, but it's wrong. In the mean time I've recovered the windsock datafile from my parentìs house, so I know that all the wood parts where painted grey... I'll correct it.
The plates on the back must be connected to the frame with a smooth transition. I've used some milliput, yet to sand smooth.
In the Eduar PE set there's a nice plate that goes on the fuselage front, so I've removed the plastic area and thinned the edges.
while working on the fuselage I've also added a plastic strip to the edge. In real life this parts where made from metal and the edges where "curled up" ( I don't know the technical term).
Will be sanded thinner at a later stage.
I've started to detail some of the accessories.
I've replaced the ROden MG with one from a WnW kit. Not a massive difference, but a little bit better.
I've added Eduard PE.
I've started the assembly of the cockpit.
I've added PE instruments form Eduard and made wood floor with plasticard painted with oil technique.
Some little things to fix (the color of compass bezel, the small wood sphere and the seam on the vertical bar...), but I'm quite satisfied.
Some oil weathering added
(http://www.andymodels.altervista.org/dh2/30.jpg)
Fuselage interior painted grey with some rigging added.
And finally a test fit
(http://www.andymodels.altervista.org/dh2/32.jpg)
That's all!
A pleasant build so far!
Andrew

Wow, that one looks really cool. I will follow this build patiently as I love the DH2 and this promises to become a great model. to replace the plastic canvas with lead foil is obviously a good idea.
Best regards

Outstanding progress, your skills are shining through. You definitely did not need a WNW to commence, this is turning out to be one beauty.
-
This is modelling, or rather Modelling with capital M! Great efforts so far!
-
Wow!
Thanks for the nice comments :D
I must say that it's pleasant to do something different form WnW, it gives you the chanche to test my modelling skills! ;D
I hope to make a good progress during xmas break
Andrew
-
Well, your modeling skills seem to be in perfectly good order, Andrew...wonderful work...I'll be gasping right along with your progress. -M
-
You are doing an excellent job on this model. I like that you, being undaunted and un detered by the nay sayers, have forged a head on this kit and giving it a new lease on life with your careful planning and detailing. I will be following as you continue in this build.
-
Outstanding work to date! Removing and replacing the nacelle fabric will give a whole new scale look to this one!
RAGIII
-
No half work on this one! :) I built a few Roden kits in 1/72 and they really helped my modelling skills :)
-
Andrew
Great work on the Roden kit. I too am watching this closely as I had the Roden kit in my collection before the Wingnuts kit became available. Just been waiting for another build to go forward after Des' so I can glean more information before starting mine.

The cockpit interior is looking really good Andrew and the removal of the fabric sides is a bold move. I am really looking forward to seeing how the Aluminium foil will look, it should give a very realistic look once painted.
Des.
-
Cor!!
This is going to be fascinating watching it develop.
-
Hi!
Some other mods to the cockpit.
The oil pulsator: in real life it has two transparent cups on top,
in the kit they are offered as grey plastic.
I've stretched some transparent sprues and modelled two new cups:
Mounted. You can also see the new elevator "trim" made with PE parts and springs. Fuselages are not glued yet, so the misalignment between some parts:
I've decided to make a new MG support ( the part with wood knob in the previous posts).
In the second pic looks like it's not alligned, but it's not glued yet
(http://andymodels.altervista.org/dh2/34.jpg)
I've replaced the tubes on the instrument on the left side, with some copper wire.
Meanwhile I've also started to paint the tail.
Preshading for represent the internal structure and I've painted the tail colours instead of using decals.
In real life there is a little more contrast on the canvas parts....

That's all!
Andrea

Andrew,
I've been following your efforts from the beginning and am most impressed with the efforts you've made in detailing this Kit, most impressive! Improved and added items like the oil pulsator and the extra "plumbing" really add to what is becoming a very nicely done super-detailed Build. As I stated earlier this is one of my favorites and I'm enjoying watching you work your magic on it!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Great build so far. Looking forward to more.
Steve

Outstanding work and detail Andrea. Looking Fab :D
-
Outstanding detail additions and painting!
RAGIII

I am enjoying your build Andrew. As mentioned before, it's neat to see these much maligned Roden kits, being built with care and extra detail. As Lance mentioned, "most impressive." The interior details you have added have already brought this up to a higher standard. Outstanding work. I will be following along as you progress.
-
Hi!
Time to go on.
I went on working on the tail.
I sprayed the white, red and blue.
Then I tried kit decals... ::)
Well, you see the result. they are very brittle. I retouched the serial, and in real life looks better than in picture.
I have to do some shading to make the internal structure more visible and when the model will be finsihed I'll work with oils and pigments.
On the real plane the paint was weel worn out, so to replicate this I applied some maskol on the leading edge to simulate the discoloration.
It needs some more work but as base it's ok for me .
On to the wings.
The ailerons are moulded with the wings, so I cut them and build the hinges from plasticard.
Next I'll add some brass pin to locate the parts.
I decided to add some resins to improve the kit.
First the seat from Barracuda. The plastic lump form the kit it's orrible ;D
the resin piece it' s superb, once painted the detail will pop out.
I think I'll use the cushion from the kit. I've smoothed it and added some buttons.
The second resin "bit" it's the Taurus engine 8)
The kit engine can be improved but has some basic flaws (cylinders shape), but I decided that I wanted something better and the Taurus engine it's amazing (details pictures in next posts!)
And here I want to thanks Lukasz of Taurus.
It delayed the shipping 3 or 4 days (a problem with paypal), so it added some resin spark plugs as a bonus for the wait!
Great service thanks! ;) :D
Finally I bought a Camel Usas kit from WnW and discovered that the wheels not used in that kit are perfect form my DH.2!
Not a night and day difference, but the WnW have a sharper detail and writings on the sidewall.
That's all.
Andrew
-
You're an incredibly resourceful and creative modeler, Andrew.
I always admire threads where somebody takes a "rough" kit, and turns it into something beautiful.
You're inspiring me to consider doing something similar.
Though it won't look as good as this.
-
Hi!
The project is not dead, I only had very little time....
The first work after the break: insert metal tubes on the end of struts, the plastic ones are too short and too brittle.
Next I've started to work on taurus engine.
As you can see a huge improvement on the kit one.
I cut the small parts inside a bag, so it's no so easy to loose them! ::)
Black base
(http://andymodels.altervista.org/dh2/49.jpg)
Now I'll pause the engine build, I'll use it as is for engine mount fitting and other things and when everything will be ok I'll finish to build it.
TIme to close the fuselage.
Dry fit on wings, not bad.
Anothe bit from WnW, this time a propeller form fe.2b, shortened a little bit. I Still have to rebuild the tip reinforcements.
Time to apply the metal foil canvas sides.
PE for stitching added.
Something to fix, but not bad.
That's all.
I have also cut the masks for roundels and codes, so now I'll go on with painting of wings and nacelle.
Bye
Andrew

That's some nice work, Andrew. I really like that stitching.

Hi!
Time to work on wing.
Usual pre-shading (like the tailplane), followed by CDL color
(http://andymodels.altervista.org/dh2/57.jpg)
I made some home made masks with silohuette cutter and frisket to paint the roundels.
On the lower left wing you can see a roundel without white ( and with some treouch to do ::) ).
This is because the lower left wing was once a top left wing, so it didn't have the roundel on the bottom.
It was repainted on the field without using the white.
On the top the roundel was overpainted but it's still visible.
Also the c1 code was masked and painted.
Still some retouches to do and weathering to add, but for now I'm satisfied.
FInally I've mad the hole for the footstep. I'll have to add the PE part yet.
I still have to decide if I'll leave the sides in CDL or I'll paint with faded and chipped PC8 like in some pictures....
That's all.
Now I'll go on with nacelle and some wings weathering.
Bye
Andrew

Some great modelling going on here Andrew, your results on the canvas side panels using foil are most effective. The work on the wings is very impressive as well, this is going to be a spectacular Build! 8)

Hi!
Sorry for the pause, but the build it's not dead. ::)
A lot to do beside modelling...
and a stop because I've managed to broke the longeron that joins the 2 halfs of the wing. A weak spot of the model.
As the wing need Dihedral it was not easy to rejoin at the right angle, but now it's ok
Now it's time to smooth the join and the underside seam, but nothing too bad.

I'll try to be faster in future! ::)

Hi!"
Small update.
Before going on with fuselage painting I've decide to add metal pins to the landing gear and make some proper holes for locating it.
I think that with Roden kits it's a must, the plastic pins are too small and too fragile.
Compared to a WnW kit you have to think ahead 3 or 4 steps, compared to where you are in the building process, for not having problems later ;D
But it's great fun!
Now I'll go on with finishing and painting the fuselage.
