I have spent recent modelling evenings on WNW DH.2. The kit was waiting over one year in my stash, finally I got to it. I am planning to build the kit option D - Leslie Aizelwood's mount from 32 Sqn.
The interior sub-assemblies, where I have added rigging, control lines and the small piece of the fuel pipe at the end of the hand pump.

Looks very good, PrzemoL.
I have this kit almost every day in my hand (inclusive the beautiful Taurus Rotary-engine for over a year on my shelf) and say to myself - finally begin it............ :-\
PrzemoL, do not forget to remove the piece of plastic waste on the lever (yellow arrow).

Beautiful work so far Przemol, you attention to detail is amazing and the interior of the cockpit is a work of art.

Brilliant start on the DH.2, Przemol. Wonderful work on the cockpit.
Are the seat belts kit parts or after market? They look great. I will surely
enjoy following your build, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Have this in my stash, and although I suspect any build is a long way down the road ... I will never the less be following this particular build with some considerable interest.
A great start, all the cable work looks to be exceptionally neat. ... Well done.
-
At the risk of being redundant, Terrific interior work! Up to the standards we have come to expect from your bench. I will use your build as a TUTORIAL on what I may be able to scratch build and add to My Roden DH2 in my stash, or maybe just get a WNW kit.....

Looks extremely good so far! I have a lot of sentiment to DH2 cause it has been my first serious WW1 model.
I`m sure that it`s going to be a beauty!
Przemek what turnbuckles are you going to use on this one?
PS. I`m really excited about the Hobbit premiere soon!
-
Brilliant work on the interior, Prez! I've got the Eduard 1/48 DH2 that I've been putting off. You've inspired me to move it up in the queue now that I'll have your build to use as a guide.
Cheers,
Bud
-
What a lovely start PrzemoL! I've got one of these tucked away and so I'm looking forward to see how things progress.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Once again terrific work on the interior Przemol. Another great build is coming out of your hands.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Excellent progress, Prez ;)
Keep going!

-
Great start Prze, and as with all your Builds detail and finishing of the highest qualities. The cockpit and particularly the Instruments and switches are outstanding. I just received this Kit as a Christmas gift, and will be watching your progress closely before starting it.
Cheers,
Lance
-
I too recieved this kit for christmas and at this moment I'm waiting for Lukasz to send the engine kit. You have a fare amount of people watching this build. Good job
-
Absolutely outstanding work: I am really waiting to see how this progresses as I have a soft spot for pushers (albeit in another scale). This is a real work of art.
-
Many thanks, everybody. I am glad that my build may be an inspiration for so many of you. I will only tell all of you who contemplate taking it to the desk - go for it, it is a pleasure build as all WNW kits are. And the puhers are especially appealing!
Bertl, thanks for the heads-up! I have indeed missed this detail! :-[
Ernie, the seat belts are from the kit - airbrushed and with some wash added.
Filip, the buckles will be from Bob Booth's stuff.
And I have already seen The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug! Great piece of movie art, though I regret slightly, that Sir Jackson strayed quite far away from the original at some important points.
-
Beautifully, I hope to see finished model in Bytom on competition :D

I may just be on time with this build. :)

Hello Prez:
It looks like you are off to a good start. I will be watching as you progress through this build as I have this and am thinking of starting it soon.
Best wishes for the New Year
Mark
-
Lovely interior there Prez, as I have come to expect from you and you never disappoint!
I too have this model in my stash, and again, your log will provide a perfect reference.
Happy new year!
-
Thanks, Mark and Ian!
In the meantime I have finished the work on the Monosoupape. Once again, let me express my admiration to Łukasz - he has done an excellent job. If anybody hesitates if to buy this marvel - do not wait, go for it. It is worth every penny.

Then I have built the engine support. Its cowling together with the outer skin of fuel and oil tanks is on, too. Sanding of filled joints at the nacelle goes on, some corrections are still needed.

And finally the lower wing got attached to the nacelle - again some filling is necessary...

One of my favourites! It's going great Prez very nice interior and details.
Cheers
P.S: Tell me something... didn't the DH2 had a blip switch?
-
Thank you, everybody.
Mark, I am using a wash of water based paints, sealed with clear acrylics.
Zabu, I suppose, that you suggest I was wrong to sand flush the top of the stick? I have looked through the available material I have on DH.2 and found no shots of the cockpit interior. Have you any? I would very much like to see a confirmation of the blip switch existence on the stick :)
-
Unfortunately i don't have any.
The only thing i have it's a rendering from Rise of Flight wich shows a late production batch cockpit. As you may see the blip switch it's on the top of the control column.
The Osprey Publishing book DH2 vs Alb D.I/D.II has a very nice rendering of what i believe to be the right layout to Azlewoods cockpit crate, being this one a early production batch aircraft (second) wich went from 7842 to 7941 serials. You may also have a look at page 29 of WD 48 if available, as it's the same layout wich goes like:
Then Osprey continues:
" Pilot engine management included... an on/off ´'blip switch' on the top of the control column. There was no throttle - the Gnome Monosoupape was either off or running at full power - so the blip switch supplied a means of pilot engine control by 'blipping' or momentarily cutting off the magnetos that supplied current to the spar plugs."
Another thing ::)... that wood bracket in front of the cockpit...hmmm. I guess that this is the right clamp that Cpt. Hawker made:
It's also depicted in a pic in WD page 28.
Don't know how importatnt this is to you, i'm just giving you what i have and no matter what you decide do to i know that you're going to build a very nice model, one for us to rejoice.
Cheers
P.S. : outstanding work with the engine Prez, very very good.

Prez,
Outstanding works always come from your bench my old friend. Your Monosoupape is one awesome little gem.

-
Hello Przemo,
Your engine is teriffic and the interior is so well done as always. This will be another exceptional build.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Many thanks, Zabu for all these details and explanations. I do not have the Osprey book - these are all valuable pieces of information. Well, I will surely add the blip switch. But as for the dashboard layout and that wooden support for Lewis, I will stay with what WNW suggest for 32 Sqn modification.
Thank you, Gregory and Patrick for your kind words.
In the meantime I have prepared the main parts (except for the tail) for painting. The ailerons are glued to the wings, the struts are cleaned from flash, and most importantly - all the rigging points are fitted with Bob von Buckle's eyelets - each checked by a pull-out test to avoid nasty surprises when rigging. For those who did not read my build log on Fee - I do it by passing a bit of fishing line through each eyelet and trying to pull it from its hole. Simple as it is, it is worth to check it now, when access to the holes is almost unlimited.
Generally, nothing worthy taking photos - I will show some pictures when parts get colours. :D
-
Beautiful work on the Airco, Prze. The Lewis gun looks very good. Thanks
for the tip on the "pull-out test". That is a very helpful thing to remember.
Looking forward to the next episode, my friend.

Paint works started. CDL on and shaded. For the wings I have opted for opaque PC10 on the top sides, so no see-through effect - just rib shading. The nacelle sides will get some wash later to emphasize lacing and wrinkled linen.

Looking mighty fine indeed, Prze! The CDL is perfect; what did you use or is it your own formula?

Prze, as usual that's stunning work, mate.
Just one question- how many models are you building, if you need Bob von Bucklemäker to send an entire ship full of buckles? Or does the kit need that many?
Dal- really impressed.

-
First of all - thank you all for your kind words on my CDL efforts.
Secondly, I have ordered a modest amount of 340 eyeleys and 370 tubes. I do not know why they had to fit in a container ship, not a usual envelope. Probably the shipping costs are the reason ;) Ask Mr. von Buckle!
And thirdly, my recent order which has caused such an uproar, has nothing to do with this build. These bits are destined for DH.9, Salmson and Roland... My future builds planned for this year.
-
Your choice of CDL is absolutely perfect Prze, and the wing shading is excellent.
Des.
-
Thank you, Des!
The CDL is perfect; what did you use or is it your own formula?
Lance, the base colour is Pactra A123 Mid Stone, then postshading using a mix of clear gloss and a drop of Vallejo Beige Brown.

Thanks Prze, I figured it was a mix. You certainly "nailed" it.
Cheers,
Lance

Prze, as Des and Lance said, the CDL looks really good. I like your planned builds for this year, I look forward to following them. Now I understand why you needed so many eyelettes and tubes! :)

Careful, mate, you may push your tongue through that cheek. :) BTW, I apologise for the reporting of the last Ashes series in the media here. Our media thinks "restraint" only refers to out-of-office recreational activities and has nothing to do with styles of reporting.

So, let us return to the point. Works on this model are progressing. PC10 on the wings upper sides on and shaded.

Thanks, gentlemen.
"My" PC10 is Pactra A30, for shading I use clear gloss with a drop or two of black added.

Once again, your painting skills are astonishing. Both CDL and your interpretation of PC10 look very very convincing.
It's a pleasure just to be looking at your modelling skills.

Thank you, everybody.
FF, the surface detail is indeed emphasized with wash.
A progress? Well, I have completed staining the airframe around the engine and on the underside. I have also attached the cabane struts. They have some tolerance at their sockets, so to keep the geometry right, I have used the top wing put on them and aligned with respect to the lower one. Today I plan to add the interplane struts - some photos will follow then.
-
Beautiful.

Thanks, Adam and Gregory.
The struts are in. The upper wing is just put on to assure the proper alignment of the struts. The lower wing dihedral had to be increased by placing the pens for support, thus all the struts fit into their holes in the upper wing. It is not easy to fit all 10 of them but it is doable. I will have to do it once again, with the glue in the sockets - but this tomorrow!
-
Some more steps forward, though not everything went smoothly...
Everything was ready for the upper wing assembly
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/DH2/dh2-65_zps8d13ca70.jpg)
And then I erronously decided to use gel CA glue, what almost led to a disaster. I put small glue blobs into the struts sockets and tried to place all 10 struts to their places. The unstrained wing geometry in the kit is such that the upper wing has larger dihedral than the lower one. Thus the wing tips have to be gently pressed one against another to get everything in place. And it was too much, not all struts went all the way in the sockets. The glue started setting too early. I had to tear off the wing from two resisting struts, luckily the plastic glue at low wing sockets was strong enough... Swearing like tinker I had to re-drill all the sockets to remove that damned CA glue. Then I decided to use the glue only in the outermost struts. This way it went well. So now the upper wing is on but the cabane and inner interplane struts are just dry-sitting in their sockets. However the rigging I started seems to stabilise all the wing cellule. It is not over, yet, as you may see, but I have enough for today.

Great work Prez!
I find it very difficult to fit a wing, all struts together, before the glue goes off. It is a very good idea of yours to glue the critical joins and let the fit and strength of the model with the rigging hold it all together.
-
Prze, it certainly isin't coming easy is it? I had visions of building one of the
DH.2's but after seeing what you have gone through, with the talents you have,
I think I will hone my abilities a little...no a lot more before tackling such a beastie. ;) ;D
After the fight with the struts, with the rigging begun, it is really looking superb.
Even with all the adversity, you are doing a masterful job, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Hello Przemo, glad you made it in installing the upper wing. If you had some trouble doing this, you can imagine what fear I have glueing the struts. Your rigging is as always outstanding. What a great build this is going to be. Congratulations!

Many thanks, everybody for watching and kind comments.
Well the wings are rigged, (the last missing lines to come will be the elevator controls, but only when the crate stands on its legs):

I have also prepared the tail booms and the tail itself for painting - the parts were cleaned from delicate flash, fitted with Bob's eyelets, the elevators fitted with small wire pieces to strengthen their joint to the stabiliser and finally the tail piece is glued together. I have noticed the slot in the horizontal stabiliser is a bit too wide to keep tightly the vertical stabiliser - I have decided to connect them before painting and use some liquid CA glue as a filler to hide the joint. The photos will follow when colours are on.

Coming along beautifully Prze, the rigging is excellent and your shading is superb, I really like your CDL colour.

Really impressive work shown here (again). I thank you for highlighting your building mistakes, as well.

Beautiful work, Prze. Quite an achievement even now with the wing rigging done.
Are the wings and struts stable for handling now that they are rigged?
Your weathering on the wings looks superb. I'm very interested in the
upcoming updates, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thank you, again, for your kind words.
Ernie, the wing cellule is now very rigid, the rigging does its job. As a structural engineer I theoretically know the function of bracing cables quite well. But seeing how they work marvels to shaky wing-struts-wing structures never ceases to amaze me! ;)
-
Prze,
This little jewel looks better with every update. Great painting and shading, wonderful work on the weathering, and, despite the obstacles, a fine job of rigging. Very impressive so far, and I'm much looking forward to the completion.
Cheers,
Lance

Just catching up on this great build. Amazing work and colours!!
Steve

Thanks, Lance and Steve.
Next steps:
I have painted and oil-stained the tail booms, then rigged the mid spans, glued them to the wings and then rigged the front spans. Sounds easy but the key was to control the degree of rigging, checking the geometry of the booms and struts. For a moment it seems, the tail is symmetric, but there is still a couple of lines which may distort it. However, I will attach the tail piece first. It is still not painted, so this will be the next step...

BTW, I have also added the missing blip switch on the stick.

This is beautiful work Prze. It really has the 'wow' factor and with all of the recent Eindekkers around the forum we really need a DH2 to sort them out.
Best wishes

Hello Prez:
It's looking like you are nearing the end in True Prez Fashion with another outstanding build. I have this, but am just a little timid yet to try it. Your work is inspiring and I will definately review your log when I tackle mine. Thanks again for sharing your work and methods.

Prez,
Outstanding work my old friend. Your rigging looks excellent.

Thank you once more for your kind words. To those who feel timid or scary of this kit - do not be afraid; like most of WNW kits it is so well engineered, that it is a pleasure to build. And the maze of cables is feasible, too. Give it a try!
And in the meantime I have added a couple of new bits.
To the nacelle (the elevator lines are not tight yet
(http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww109/PrzemoLPP/DH2/dh2-82_zps6ff0d26b.jpg)
The propeller (here I still deliberate if I should attach the blade logos)
And the Lewis, still without the aiming devices

Well, nothing really special. The tips are well engraved in the kit part. I have used a piece of paper pressed to the blade and a pencil to draw the demarcation line, then used this template to prepare the mask from Tamiya tape. Then painted wood, placed the masks and airbrushed Vallejo brass colour. After that some dark brown wash and ready (almost). The wash is still not sealed, I will do this when I take the decision on prop logos.
Anyway, thanks Bo and Bob, for your kind words.

Excellent work as always. The prop looks terrific in my opinion!

Thanks, RAGIII!
