With my 1/16 Renault FT tank almost finished, it's time to start something new.
The plan was the WNW Halberstadt (late), but I patiently wait for the release of the Pheon decals before I start with it.
No problem at all...I still have a rediculous stash of 1/48 kits from Eduard, Mirage, Gavia, Karaya and Special Hobby.
So let's do something else...something fairly easy.
An Albi D.II sounds about right. :)
I only recently started to work with oils, so a nice woody will be good practise I guess.
But...before I start.
(https://i.postimg.cc/DydBnF9v/IMG-3366.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
...I must clear...and clean...my desk. :o
No....really....
(https://i.postimg.cc/Hk6z8zWF/IMG-3367.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
...this is my desk after a couple of models. :-X
I'm terrible. I have a huge desk...a whole room even...and still, this is how it looks after building some models.
Shame on me!
Okey...the kit...
(https://i.postimg.cc/RZSG0ymc/IMG-3370.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Lovely kit...Eduard nice. Ushi van der Rosten rigging wire, apart from that...OOB.
I finsh the Renault FT and clear my desk, so...more soon,
Robin :)
-
Looking forward to your build once things are shorted ;)
Terri
-
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with a messy work area. I do try to keep it clear but always ends up cluttered. I'm looking forward to your Albatross D.II.
-
Looking forward to the Albatros build! Your Desk looks nice 8) Mine was far worse until 2 days ago. I did My Semi Annual cleaning ::)
RAGIII
-
A end of a project/start of a new one is a good moment to do a short cleanup of the work bench, at least for me.
I will watch with interest, because I'm building a Albatros W.4 (a D.I or D.II on floats) in the neighbour thread. Also Eduard, so I guess that parts of the kit are identical.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Lol...thanks guys.
It's good to know I'm not the only one who has problems with keeping the bench tidy. ::)
Halfway...tomorrow I do the rest of the room and I'll try to stay more organized, but I say that each time. ;D
(https://i.postimg.cc/qvRVJ2Kv/IMG-3374.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
But....a nice bench is...nice.
Sorted out the paint I'll use. That's always a challenge. Manuals often refer to brands I don't use, so I need to co compare, check FS numbers (when given), conversion charts and adjust to my own liking.
The artwork from Ronny Bar on WNW I like...a lot, but I noticed his artwork often doesn't really match the suggested colours there.
I tried to find colours matching his artwork....right or wrong...I like it! :)
For this kit, I checked the Roland C.IIa (late) artwork...same colours used, so a good reference.
One colour still gives me a headache....the grey green used on the engine cover. Is it more grey? more green? something like RLM2? I see all kinds of shades used and that makes it even more confusing. :o
Will start this weekend or early next week....right now I enjoy my espresso and cognac and... do nothing. 8)
Robin
-
Robin,
Doing nothing for a short period is good too. I had a good laugh seeing your cluttered desk, it looked just like mine!
Regarding your question on the Grey-Green for the engine color I've tried more grey, more green, and RLM Grey but I use primarily Tamiya Acrylics which I don't see in your photos. Like all WWI colors I'd say there is no rule, it's your call! On a Wood finish Albie I last used the lighter Grey Green XF-76 from Tamiya, and really like the results. I also used the RLM Grey on a wood finished LVG C.VI and it provides a very high contrast but it appeals to me as well.
I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.
Cheers,
Lance

Cleaning up the workspace is a good way to feel like you're getting something done... it's also gives a nice feeling of a fresh start where everything is possible!
Your workspace looks fantastic!
/Fredrik
-
As Lance alludes to, no one knows exactly what a given color look should look like. Over time, colors fade and are changed by weathering and many other things. I think of the colors called out in instructions as 'guidelines'. I frequently mix my own colors to get a certain look that I think is right for that model.
-
Thanks guys,
Playing with colours and adjusting them to your own liking...within boundaries of what's still plausible...is fun.
After several days of "research" and making numerous colour swatches....
(https://i.postimg.cc/JhBDLbhf/IMG-3383.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I think I'll use these...will do some airbrush tests and probably tweak them a bit.
The RLM2 (from Vallejo anyway) seems way too dark. The grey-green bits of the D.II I've seen on photo's seem to be fairly light.
Replaced it with Vallejo 71.103 RLM84-FS34424....might add a dash of light grey to it. Will see.
And....
(https://i.postimg.cc/tTQ1CYZY/IMG-3376.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
....a tidy bench, so I'm ready to start.
Robin :)
-
There we go!
Started with the interior parts...mainly the wooden bits.
Modified the frame behind the ammo boxes....opened up.
Also did some extra work on the "switch board", holes in the control stick frame (wires go through), did some riveting and made a missing panel line.
(https://i.postimg.cc/4xwn24wj/IMG-3385.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
A little surgery here and there.
(https://i.postimg.cc/0NQjTgBj/IMG-3387.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Rivets.
(https://i.postimg.cc/JzRGQH3b/IMG-3388.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Made the missing panel line. End of the engine cover. Eduard got this wrong. This is where the cover ends...it's not going all the way to the cockpit. :-\
(https://i.postimg.cc/02Yzm0Sk/IMG-3390.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Ready for some paint. :)
More soon,
Robin

Looking awesome Robin! I love what you are doing to date!
RAGIII

Thanks! :)
My first attempt at painting wood with oils.
I used them for weathering on the Renault FT and this gave me the confidence to try wood with oils.
(https://i.postimg.cc/902Ddfjr/IMG-3392.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Oh lordy! :o
(https://i.postimg.cc/Yqp4jj3P/IMG-3394.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Phew! :)
Was fun...after it turned out to be pretty okey and it was good practise for the outside.
(https://i.postimg.cc/63n74vgk/IMG-3401.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/J0QGPW1K/IMG-3402.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/XvQZfWY8/IMG-3400.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I'll do an oil wash when dry (how long does that take?) to add a bit more depth / shading.
Furthermore: woot! this is fun!
Robin :)
-
The wood looks terrific!
RAGIII
-
Great start, your wood looks fantastic.

Thanks guys. :)
Looked at the kit's engine....
(https://i.postimg.cc/x1y9X5cK/IMG-3404.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Will do...won't see much of it anyway, but...
(https://i.postimg.cc/xjhfhqwb/IMG-3406.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I'll know and a bit of scratchbuilding is always fun. ::)
(https://i.postimg.cc/HsMYgdmv/IMG-3413.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
After the demolision party....slowly adding bits and bobs. Work in progress.
Had some fun with oils also....
(https://i.postimg.cc/bvypknt4/IMG-3409.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The seat. Cushion will follow asap.
And last for today...
(https://i.postimg.cc/7ZyxPdYH/IMG-3414.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The ammo boxes and since I opened the frame....scratch build the fuel tank.
More soon,
Robin :)

Looking Fantastic!

Interesting things you are doing with the cockpit parts!
I should have waited to build my cockpit to pick up information from you in the meantime.
I found not much about the inside of the early Albatros (D.I, D.II, W.4 ...)
Are you sure about a wooden seat?
Cheers,
Frank
-
Are you sure about a wooden seat?
No, far from sure....might as well been leather covered. I just don't know.
Only photo's of the seat I've seen are from a NZ replica D.II late...with a Teves & Braun radiator.
This plane has a rather odd open work leather covered seat.
No idea what the seat looked like back then.
The open frame...I've seen on this replica....and the 1/32 Roden kit, so it's an estimated guess that's right.
Engine update tomorrow....stamping out tiny bolt heads with my hex punch and die thingie right now. :)
Also received the WWI German Aircraft Colors from AK...interesting set.
Robin

Awesome job so far. The early Albatrosses are among the coolest. 8)
I don‘t know if it might be of any help: https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7155.0
Best regards

Awesome...thanks a lot. I'll change it to leather. :)
The "upgraded" engine..
(https://i.postimg.cc/FR2GQqgJ/IMG-3421.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/zBLp65Wr/IMG-3422.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I'll do the wiring ( with 0.2 mm lead wire) after painting.
Robin :)
-
Engine almost done...only the wires to the magneto to do.
(https://i.postimg.cc/sXDwzV9N/IMG-3427.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/FKxDwfcS/IMG-3428.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Please have mercy with me, the whole darn thing is just 2,5 cm.
And gave the interior a mellow wash around the frames, painted the inside of the engine covers and started adding the bits and pieces.
Had to borrow a compass, because it's not included....2 compass decals, but no compass. :-\
(https://i.postimg.cc/mDXV20m2/IMG-3431.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
More soon,

Your engine looks great as does your interior work!
RAGIII
-
Thanks! :)
Ready to close the fuselage now.
Seat got leather (I left the outside wood) and all is in place now.
The "pedals frame" I'll place from underneath after I closed the fuselage.
I left the water tank on top of the engine off for now...typical something I can break.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BnfyfdYf/IMG-3433.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
A fairly smooth ride so far (fingers crossed), so more soon.
Robin :)
-
You're catching up with me!
Great progress and a brass tank.
(https://i.postimg.cc/4xwn24wj/IMG-3385.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
What have you done with the holes in the fuel selector panel?
Just for interest ;)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thank you....I try my best. :)
There was no detail worth calling detail, so I drilled matching holes and plugged those with Evergreen rod.
Gave a raised front and on the back also. Drilled small holes in the four selectors, inserted the PE switches.
An instrument decal on the fifth.
Looks neat, but not worth the effort to be honest. :-\
Robin.
-
Closed the fuselage and finished the riveting and added 2 missing round hatches near the tail.
(https://i.postimg.cc/LsVXtX3s/IMG-3435.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Rivets...
(https://i.postimg.cc/85PCtSZm/IMG-3436.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
There were zero details on the fuselage bit between the wings. Rivets, Evergreen and brass tubing to the rescue.
(https://i.postimg.cc/KYbj3LLV/IMG-3434.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I was looking for my 1/48 eyelets from Bob, but I guess I displaced them after 6 years or so....pitty.
Waiting for new ones now. :)
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Looking good Robin , I do like your details being added . Don't see many folks adding detail to the center lower wing , very promising indeed :)
Terri
-
Excellent added details. Really looking sharp!
RAGIII
-
Thanks milady, thanks Rick. :)
Painting the fuselage...Work in progress.
Primer, pre shaded with dark grey, sand and sand mixed with white.
Now busy with the engine cover...a dark grey base.
(https://i.postimg.cc/wjHqG8VP/IMG-3438.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/9FyXbFGZ/IMG-3441.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Next will be a steel drybrush followed by the grey-green. Some minor chipping with salt.
Looking forward to do the wood with oils. With the difeerent panels and time to dry in between...will prolly take a week.
I can do the machine guns, radiators, prop and maybe paint the wings....while watching paint dry.
No need to sit on my hands for sure! :)
Robin

Having fun in my own silly little universe. :)
Music on, an espresso with a glass of cognac next to it. Undisturbed bench time.
(https://i.postimg.cc/yY0tWCYn/IMG-3443.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Ammo Mig oilbrushers...Ochre, Dark mud and Starship filth.
(https://i.postimg.cc/L8R71QJS/IMG-3445.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I get myself another espresso and cognac and do a few more panels.
It's almost a therapeutic thing to do...wish I learned about it years earlier. :-\
Robin

Looks really good! I like the light wood tones.
/Fredrik

Your wood panels look great Robin.

Thanks guys,
I'm having a great time doing this...painstaking, but rewarding.
Fredrik...I try my best to keep it (sort of) light. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/rFKfB67Q/IMG-3449.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Now I stop....before I start messing things up, besides. It's 1 AM and I have to get up early for work.:-[
Robin
-
I really like your Technique! What type of paints are you using?
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick,
This is all I use...
(https://i.postimg.cc/q7QYqj1R/IMG-3456.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
3 "Oilbrushers" from Ammo-Mig, odourless thinner from the same brand, a couple of soft brushes and a piece of toilet paper.
The oilbrushers are ready to use....thinned down and with a brush...tubes with oil paint.
Ochre, Starship Filth and Dark Mud are the ones I use for my wood.
I use them on a very light sand / grey base.
Apply the dots (like used for weathering...there I got the idea from). Go make a cup of coffee...drink coffee, or just sit on your hands for 10 minutes ;D.
Now get a dry brush and spread the paint over the panel the way you like. Next a brush dipped in thinner, but remove most thinner from the brush or it will become a muddy sludge. Very lightly remove paint until you get the look you like. Can be dark or light....and anything in between.
Lighter panels are most difficult....when you remove a little too much paint, you can start again.
The very light touch seems to be the key to success.
Trial and error, but since this is my first and I'm not a wizzard....it's pretty easy.
Robin :)
-
All the wood is done now. :)
I learned a lot along the road and I think it looks pretty good....from normal viewing distance at least. :-\
Perhaps a bit too much light/dark contrast....better next one.
(https://i.postimg.cc/P5tgJ5LM/IMG-3467.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/ncY8nDLz/IMG-3464.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I like the few panels with a burled wood finish best. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/fRB69QmQ/IMG-3466.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Can anyone tell me how long I must wait until I can gloss coat this? And is it safe to use a spray can? (I have Tamiya, Vallejo and Mr.Hobby)
Thanks.
Robin
-
I made good progress....the fuselage is now ready.
(https://i.postimg.cc/C1qX93f9/IMG-3474.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/HWbFzCmy/IMG-3475.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Had some issues fitting the Spandaus, because the engine isn't perfectly placed. Kinda stupid I didn't notice that in time.
Not a big issue, but still annoying and I'll make sure that won't happen with my next build...an Albi D.III.
Gloss coated the fuselage with Mr. Hobby....before and after decals. The tail with semi-gloss.
(https://i.postimg.cc/SRb34g6R/IMG-3470.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/kGNZgWsc/IMG-3471.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I ventured into pre-shading. Still a bit clumsy, but I get the hang of it. 1 mm masking tape.
It shows neatly on the light blue underside. On top it works well with the light green...not so much with the dark green and brown.
Next up...painting the wings. I already drilled the holes for the eyelets, so I guess I'm ready to go.
More soon,
Robin :)

Really looking Terrific with the Markings in place. Nice subtle job on the pre shading.
RAGIII

Good work! Interesting to see how the whole appearance changes as markings are applied. /Fredrik

Thanks guys :)

Can anyone tell me how long I must wait until I can gloss coat this?
Wow, you are really fast!
You give the oils only 2 days? I hope there won't be any cracks.
The oils are not drying as normal paints, but reacting/oxidizing with oxygen. If you just use thin layer of artists oils in normal temprature, I would say a week. The old oil paintings (thick layers) need years!
If you use add ons e.g. Schmincke "Medium L" flow improver, higher temperatures, and improved air flow (more oxygen) - the hardening times are decreasing.
If it still smells strongly like oil I would not put coats on it.
Nice result, as usual.
I hope that my MGs will fit! :o
Cheers,
Frank
-
That is a first class wood finish - I really must try out that idea. With the markings it looks even better!
With reference to the oil paints: I use Windsor and Newton oils which have been allowed to stand for 30 minutes to tale out some of the oil and then I place the model in a warm cupboard for three days. Then I apply thin coats of acrylic but only after another two or three days: that seems to be OK and I have not had any problems so far.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Steven and Frank.
Oww....oops. Well, so far so good with the oils. ;D
Fingers crossed.
Robin :)
-
Robin,
Like Stephen I use Windsor & Newton Oils. I've had great luck with their drying agent, a gel called "Liquin". You just dip your brush in the gel, mix it with your oil paint at about 1 part gel to 10 parts paint and then do your wood graining as normal. I find that it's fully cured in 24 hours or less!
You should be able to find it at any Artist's Supply Store.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks,
I won't be surprised when the "oilbrushers" I use have something like this build in already.
They're made to be used on models...not on canvas. It seemed to be completely dry after one day.
And of course it's a miniscule thin layer...like a filter or a wash.
I used them more or less the same way on the Renault FT tank and nothing bad happened there, so I have faith.
I love the Winsor & Newton Series 7 paint brushes btw. :)

Very very interesting post.
Thanks to share your wood tecnic.
The colour you use smach very well with the idea I have...
I have an D.II in project too.
If I inderstand well you use Vallejo: model color or model air ? how do you diluate them?
Could you please tell me the references you use?
(camouflage and tail paint )
Thanks a lot and congratulations again!

Hello Xan,
Indeed Vallejo and Vallejo Air. I use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner to dilute for use with the airbrush.
For brush painting (most is airbrushed...even the very small parts), I mostly use...water. Sometimes also the airbrush thinner.
Wood is done with Ammo-Mig Jimenez oilbrushers and thinner from the same brand.
The Vallejo colours I used are:
Vallejo Air 71.021 Black Green. Used for pre-shading the wings and changing the tone of the top colour a bit.
Vallejo 70.886 Green Grey 50% + Vallejo Air 71.103 RLM84 Grey 50%. Metal covers, prop hub, etc.
Vallejo 70.906 Pale Blue. Bottom wings.
Vallejo Air 71.302 Sky Type S. Light green wing surface.
Vallejo 70.893 US Dark Green. Dark green wing surface.
Vallejo 70.846 Mahogany Brown. Red brown wing surface.
Note the black green pre-shading make the colours I used on top of it somewhat darker. Without I think the result is somewhat too light....specially the light green.
My reverences are (among others) the WNW colours (mainly the FS numbers given) and more so the artwork by Ronny Bar...made for WNW.
Disclaimer: All rather unscientific, so what I do might be way off. I'm not an expert on used colours. ;D
I just came back from a weekend R&R in Paris, so...more soon. :)
Thanks again,
Robin

Thanks a lot Robin.
even if I prefer use Gunze or tamiya , i keep your air model reference in my folder, cause you smash very well the colors i imagine this plane...

Excellent colors on the wings. Thanks for the breakdown on what Valejo colors you used.

After applying all the eyelets (pfff!), I pinned the struts and undercarriage for a better fit and more sturdy construction.
Also scratch building the (simplified version :-X) axle ropes and replaced the wheels with aftermarket wheels.
(https://i.postimg.cc/d0DXvtZ4/IMG-3487.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I attached the rigging lines (Uschi "Fine") and turnbuckles (Bob's 2mm brass tube) near the wing root before I attached the wing to the fuselage.
It's a difficult corner to reach later I think.

Rigging is a thing and an issue...for me anyway. It's been my downfall before. So far so good, but I'm afraid of it. :-[
I'll take my time and won't rush this. When that means, just a couple of lines per day...fine.

After two days working with the Uschi line, I decided...I don't like it.
It's probably fantastic, but not for me....not with 1/48 anyway.
The line is so thin and soft...I find it a nightmare to thread it through the brass tubes.
So, I removed the lines I did already, replaced some eyelets clogged with CA glue and make a fresh start.
I now ordered the 0.12mm Maxima Chameleon fishing line Bob v B. is using. Will take at least a week to get here. :-\
While waiting I can do some other jobs still to be done. Like painting the backside of the prop, a windscreen and continue with the undercarriage.
Also making up my mind about the next build.
I'm running out of eyelets and tubes, so maybe the Eduard 1/48 D.VII(AOW) or Roland C.II. Might as well get more eyelets/tubes and do an Albi D.III or C.III.
Dunno yet. ::)

I am looking forward to the results with the Monofilament line.

Which one do you use?
There are multiple sizes, may be yours is a very fine for 1/72?
I use it for some time, but sadly I don't know which size it is. I lost the label on the package and have now only the metal drum.
I hope, the drum is never empty, otherwise I don't know, which one to order :-\

This! ::)

Replaced the kits' "secondary axle" with brass tube....slightly longer and through the struts.
Made the ropes and discs/washers on the axle from Evergreen.
All as seen on photo's by James Fahey (Jamo) of the NZ D.II replica plane.
The much nicer resin after market wheels...no clue where they're from. Got a whole bunch of them many years ago.

Test fit....fits nicely. Pinning the struts is a must I think, not something Eduard put much effort into. :-\
Before painting, I still need to sand the ropes on the right, but the glue must cure before I can do that.
More soon, but not much to do while waiting for the rigging line. Grumpf!

Great additions you are doing here Robin, the undercarriage is most impressive. You'll like the Maxima Chamelion line, I've used it for years on 1:32 and believe it will suit 1:48 Scale just as well. Like you I use Bob's Buckles with it and it's a great (and easy to work with) combination. Great Build and I'm enjoying your progress updates. :)
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Robin,
I like the way you tackled the wood panelling, but the thing that caught my eye the most is your prop. It looks superb. Please share your method when you find time.
Talking of Maxima fishing line, you may want to grab some Maxima 1.5lb and 1lb breaking strain. They will both serve you well for 48th subjects and they also work well for control rigging in 32nd. The 1.5lb doubles through the tube like a knife through butter. Well worth adding to your rigging stash!
Looking forward to seeing more updates.
Cheers,
Bob

Thanks guys :)
Still waiting for the Maxima line....hopefully next week.

I think the extra work was worth it. Also made the construction sturdy...that's a nice bonus.
The prop...

Hand painted with acrylics, a wash and varnish.

Anything but a dummy :o
Great idea!
Thanks for sharing.
If you would like me to send you some 1.5lb Maxima, just let me know. Happy to help.
Cheers,

That's very kind of you, but no need. :)

Do you have pictures of this tool in action for a dummie Dummie? Your props are outstanding.

I'll take photo's when I do the next one.

The undercarriage looks very good - I had to check that this is 1/48 scale as it looks so much larger in the photos. I really like the prop painting jig - I am looking forward to seeing how that works.

Since I received the Maxima Chameleon line...no more excuses to postpone the rigging. :-X
Rigging is a major fear factor to me....my eyes just stop focussing after 10 minutes or so.
I need time in between every step, so this will take a while.
But on my way. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/QCDswRk2/IMG_3648.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I like the red brown colour of the line...at least it's visible.
It goes well through the BvB eyelets and tubes. Deburring the tubes with a 0,3 mm drill bit is a must.
So far, so good... ::)
More soon, but not rushing.
Robin
-
Off to a good start with the rigging , take your time no hurry . We can wait ! :)
Terri

Looking good! One line at the time and you will be done before you know it. /F

Thanks!
So far...still...so good. :)

Just a few minor setbacks. Had to replace an eyelet and redo one cable, because it slipped.
Four more plus control surface cables to do.
More soon,
Robin :)

Your rigging is looking excellent! You are nearing the finish line and all looks Fantastic!

Rigging is nicely done!
It looks like you're finishing our Mini 48 Albatros Group build earlier than me?
Cheers,

A very silent PS: on top of the front there is a seam line? ::)
-
Thanks guys. :)
Frank...it's not a race, besides...you put so much amazing extra effort in your build. No wonder I catch up.
This said...I'm pretty proud of my effort. It's the first WWI model (with rigging) I bring to a good end after 2 disastrous tries... years ago.
An Albatros D.III and D.V never made it this far and it took me 5 years to give it another try.
Now it feels good to be back here. :)
Not ready yet....but...almost!

Thanks gentlemen,
Finished!

I enjoyed the build. The wood with oils was new to me and I was amazed how easy that was.
Even the rigging went fairly well and it was almost enjoyable....almost. ;D
May sound silly, but just finishing this feels like I've slain a dragon. Far from perfect, but I learned a lot, so hopefully a little bit better the next one.
I'll now finish the D.VII and already made up my mind about the next one.
That will be the 1/48 Roland C.II, also from Eduard.
Thanks again,
Robin

Impressive results Robin! I really enjoyed watching this one come together!

Thanks all. :)

Robin,
I just went through this whole thread step by step, and I need to thank you for sharing so many great techniques. I'm intrigued by your pinning of the struts. How small of a drill do you use for this, and are you using brass wire for your pins or something more maleable?
I want to try this for the janky looking struts that are on Eduard's Fokker D.viii
-
Thanks,
The struts I pinned were beefy enough for a 0,4 mm drill and matching brass rod.
The struts on my Fokker D.VII are really too thin for drilling and pinning I think. Yours are probably that thin also.
I've seen people make new struts from flattened brass tubes (Albion Alloys) with brass or nickel silver rods inserted.
Not done that myself yet, but it seems not overly difficult.
Robin :)
-
Beautiful build, Robin.
Your rigging looks like it was strung by a past master - you learn QUICK!
Question. I'm liking Camo paint job. Which brand of thinner did you use for the paint? And did you use retarder?
Whenever I spray Valejo paint I get tip dry and clogging. Clearly, I'm doing something drastically wrong ::)
Cheers!

On my Fokker D.VII I used 0.3mm brass pins, works fine.
And,
yesterday a nice little package arrived, containing this Eduard Profipack D.II kit ;)
So with the Gavia D.I I can build a bigger range of Albatros types (if I live long enough to build my stash ::) )
Cheers,

I only use the Vallejo Airbrush Thinner.
Very thin mixture, minimal pressure and minimal amount of paint (trigger). Only recently "seen the light" myself.
Took me a while. ;D
Frank, you're right I need new good quality 0,3 mm drill bits...the ones I have lost their edge.
The Gavia is the same kit as Eduard :-\
I have the Gavia W.4 and D.I....they're also Eduard clones.
Robin :)

Not completely - there is an additional sprue with new struts. The inner inverted V-struts are interesting.
And new decals of course.

Yeah, I have not understand the business relationship. Same boxes, same moulds but colorful manuals.
May be intended as luxury brand?
At least the W.4 mould seems to be lost since the Gavia release. The Gavia Pfalz E.I injection moulds appeared again at Special Hobby in 2016 :D
Cheers,
Frank
-
Yep....btw the different strut is for a D.I :)
-
Another thing to add to the shopping list.
Thank you!
von B ;)

For a first attempt at rigging you have done exceptionally well. I can see that in future your model builds are going to be a must to follow.
