Hi all,
Here's a sneaky picture (or two) of my latest build, the Special Hobby 1/48 Phonix D.II, built completely out of the box.

The kit was kindly donated to the forum by Special Hobby, so... please find below a link to the full in-box review and build log (with plenty more pictures):

Many thanks again to Special Hobby for kindly donating the kit!
Cheers!

Very well done, Brad!
I have build this nice kit in the D.I "K.u.K. Kriegsmarine" release some time ago and showed it here (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=8558) in our forum, but your mottling is much better. I used the wrong paint ::)
I added real wood to the lower surface (as test for a wooden Lloyd), replaced the struts by wood and metal and used a wooden airscrew.
The details of the resin water radiator are great!

Wow! So interesting and different! Nice clean modelling! Well done, Brad! I'm sorely tempted to get one of these... ATB, Marc.

Great mottling effect and beautiful subtle wing rib shading. Thanks for sharing the model!

Now that’s a review.
Excellent work as usual.
I wonder if the mottle could have been achieved by the method wnw say to use for the splatter on the Halberstadt.

Very fine build and very nice final result!

Looking very good!
I have not seen Phonix D.II completed for a decade!

Thanks Stephen, Jason, GCN, Prez and K!
I did think about using an airbrush for the mottle; and I think it's a possibility. I was a little afraid of not quite having the control I needed using an airbrush, given that the technique in this case is seeking to replicate something applied with a sponge. In any case, I think it's a tricky finish to get right, and I don't think I got it right, but I learned for next time!

Accurate or not, I love the finish -such as the different effects on the fuselage, wings and cowling :)
