Title: Aviatik Berg D.I, 1/33 Models by Marek (Matt77 Repaint) paper model
Post by: rhallinger on June 07, 2020, 12:57:36 PM
The oils take so long to dry on my Warneford figure that I've decided to start a new model between painting sessions.  It's a 1/33 scale paper kit of Aviatik Berg D.I 38.02, one of the many mounts of Austrian ace Godwin Brumowski, in Autumn Mottle camouflage.  Here is the kit:

The artistry of Marco's repaint is wonderful, and Autumn Mottle is one of my favorite Austrian schemes.  I will have to experiment with how to make the natural wood fuselage glossy.  This one should be fun, and I'll be following Dan's previous build log for the Austrian lozenge version of this kit.  More updates as things progress.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks everyone.  Here is some initial progress on the engine and interior:

As is usually the case, I had to think a bit on how to detail the engine, and the paper manifolds were a bridge too far for me, so I used brass and plastic rod stock bent to shape and CAed in place and painted.  As Dan noted in his build of the sister kit, the paper engine is not an accurate representation of an Austro-Daimler engine, so I tried to make it reasonably close by adding details.  The top panel on the cylinders (camshaft housing?) is strip styrene with bolts added to match drawings of the Austro-Daimler engine that powered the Berg.  I have left off the prominent front portion of the engine, the vertical component of the camshaft drive system I believe, since it is hidden under the upper cowling anyway once the fuselage wrap is applied.  I was frustrated early on with the engine and considered just building up a CSM kit of the 160 hp Austro-Daimler, but decided against it because I wanted to see what I could do with the paper parts, and the engine base or kit "frame" would have to be modified substantially for the engine to fit.  Also, the only part of the engine visible in this kit is the top, so I just want to make it look "busy" as opposed to dead-on accurate.  I'm aiming for "close enough" and the overall look of the aircraft.

I should finish the engine tonight and then move on to the fuselage.  I am waiting to intstall the exhaust pipes until after the fuslage wrap is in place, to make sure that they are properly placed to protrude over the fuselage engine compartment opening, rather than perhaps interfering with placement of the fuselage side.

More soon.

Cheers,

Bob

What a great choice Bob.

Questions
Is this kit available already printed on the correct thickness paper?
If so, where?
Are there any good tutorials on making paper card models? Again, where?

I am busting to try a paper model, but I do not have access to a working printer. I don't have in person access to paper stock and will have to order the correct thickness paper and have no idea what that would be even if I get the printer functional again.

Thanks guys.  sp, I started paper models after seeing Dan's (NinetythirdLiberator) build logs in the paper model section of "Under Construction" here on the forum.  I would suggest checking those out, as you will learn much and the models are really cool.  There are also links to Dan's YouTube site in the Nie.24 and recent Pfalz D.III logs, and his video series are very helpful in learning paper techniques for these kits.  There are also some general YouTube tutorials on various aspects of paper modeling if you poke around.

While there are many paper model "kits" of WWI aircraft (a google search will yield the sites), I got the "Models by Marek Matt77 Repaints" version of this kit as a download through internet purchase.  I copied the downloaded files onto a thumb drive and took it to my local OfficeMax copy center and they printed it out on suitably heavy paper for about $3.00US.  I think the download purchase was around $5.00 to $7.00.  I cannot remember the weight of the paper, but I recall that Dan mentioned it on one of his build logs, maybe even his Berg (with a different scheme, the colorful Austrian Hex lozenge--I have that one in the stash too).  I think the paper I'm using for the Berg might be just a tad too heavy for the small parts, so that is something you can experiment with.

I have both traditional pre-printed paper kits and downloaded kits that I have had printed at OfficeMax.  It just depends on what aircraft you want.  The Models by Marek or Matt77 Repaints used to be available at a site called E-card Models, but that site is being revamped, so the old stores are not all there.  I think Matt77 has a store there again, but I do not know if any kits are posted for download purchase yet.  You'll have to search a bit and see what you can find.

Good luck, and definately give it a try.  It takes some getting used to, but it is really very enjoyable.

Best regards,

Bob

Thanks so much. I got some utube videos I'm watching and will follpw up with what you recommended on the paper card model section. That should answer enough of my questions to get started.
I have printed kits for a Spitfire and a 1-oh-thingie. Very old and stained, but should provide some practice in shaping various parts.
Thanks again for your help

I am making some slow progress with the Berg, but I think it will move along a bit once I get the fuselage together, which could happen tonight or tomorrow.  Here we are:

After I get the fuselage sides and top engine cowling (one piece) in place, I'll need to cut out all of the white areas on the fuselage top and bottom parts to create the tabs that will connect those parts to the fuselage side.  There is also a single bulkhead part (reinforced with balsa) at the rear of the fuselage near the fin/rudder, which I completed.

I'm still a paper rookie, but I'm learning as I go.  Hopefully this will all come together nicely.  More soon.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Rick & Dan.  I think we can all agree that Marco's repaints are really works of art, and definitely make the model--all we have to do is get the parts sliced up, formed up and put together.  The finishes on this one are just superb.  I'm looking forward to the wings and that lovely Autumn Mottle camo, and I don't ever have to crack open a bottle of paint or clean out the airbrush! ;D

Well, i have suffered a setback.  After affixing the sides of the fuselage i proceeded to glue on the bottom.  This revealed a twist in the fuselage that cannot be repaired, and will curtail further construction until i have new parts.  Three steps forward, two back. ::)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50049687158_c8dc2c94fe_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2jfHJhE)6/27/20 Berg (https://flic.kr/p/2jfHJhE) by Robert  Hallinger (https://www.flickr.com/photos/188152442@N04/), on Flickr

After the agony of defeat (and the swearing) had worn off, calm study indicated the culprit.  I had attached the cockpit covering unevenly, throwing off the alignment of the fuselage sides when they were added next.  See the area in the yellow circle, which resulted in the gap at the bottom of the rear cockpit bulkhead and the misalignment of the fuselage sides.  I must have rushed things.

Live and learn.  I have already dropped by my local Office Max and had another part sheet printed for $1.44 US.  I will salvage the engine and cockpit assembly and rebuild the fuselage more carefully this time.  Sigh.  At least the new parts are cheap and easily obtained.  I just need to slow down and test fit, test fit, test fit before committing to glue.  I will get there eventually.  I guess it's  good for the soul to be humbled now and then. ;)

Cheers,

Bob

That is SOOOO familiar.  It's nice that you can reprint parts.  I do that often.  It may be possible, after cooling down a bit, to tease it apart and re-glue.  However, I think your re-do is the safest way.  It looks SOOO cool, by the way.  Twist or not.

Keep it up and don't give up!

Thanks everyone.  Gene, I overlooked responding to your question.  The only instructions I give the local Office Max is the weight of the paper, in this case 65 lb.  The nice sheen is either from the paper itself or the printing process.  The printing really is first rate.  I think I got the 65 lb. recommendation from one of Dan's earlier build threads, maybe the Avro Spyder, although it might have been the Pfalz Dreidecker.  That is a nice weight for most structural components and the airframe, but a little heavy for small parts like exhaust pipes that have to be rolled.  For those, I've taken to just color copying the part on regular 20 lb. paper for ease of rolling.  Those pipes just get glued onto the engine cylinders and bear no weight, so lighter paper is fine.

Best regards,

Bob

Hi Gene...don't mean to hijack but Bob is right about using plain ol' typing paper for small tubes etc.  I do that a lot or thin my 65lb. stuff with a sanding stick.  Either way, thinner will roll much better.  Can't wait to see your foray into paper and scissors.  Keep us in the loop... :D

Thanks Dan and Rick!

I made some significant progress early this morning, wrestling the bottom and top deck of the fuselage into place.  I'm not used to all of the little tabs, so it took me a while to figure that out, and somehow when gluing the bottom on I got a slight misalignment on one side, but it will be fine.  It was lined up when I test-fit it, then must have crept out of alignment when glue was applied.  Still learning!  Here is where we are this morning, moving the ball forward again:

I hope things will move along more smoothly from here.  I will need to make some modifications and tweaks to get everything lined up properly, i.e., the tail planes and rudder due to that modest misalignment of the fuselage bottom, and the front end radiator, but that should be relatively easy.  I hope to get more done this weekend.  I am anxious to get to those lovely Autumn Mottle wings!

Cheers,

Bob

Love it.  I also find that no matter how many times I dry-fit (which is very important) it always seems to shift a bit when glue is added.  The paper modeling gods at it again... ;D

Yours looks great and so familiar.  I'm looking at my Berg right now and yours is lined up better than mine.  I don't think you'll have any trouble.  Good luck (just in case)!

Thanks for the kind words Giuseppe.

I have gotten the front radiator/cowl in place. There were some gaps and some trimming and additional tabs added, but it worked out okay.  There were still some gaps I didn't like, so I broke out the Testor's putty and filled and sanded them, followed up by painting and a dark wash to mute the bright brass.  I think it looks fine now.  I also added the turtle deck and cockpit coaming.

... followed up by painting and a dark wash to mute the bright brass.

Really looks great, Bob.

One of the tools in my paper modeling arsenal is a good set of soft chalk pastels to touch up seams, etc. Easy to blend colors, apply with brush or fingers, and much more forgiving than paint.

Thanks everyone!  Gene, I have a nice set of weathering powders from my railroad modeling days, and I had just neglected to use them.  Thanks for the reminder.  I applied some to the cowling and they really do the trick nicely.  I will use them throughout, as needed.

She's starting to look like a real aeroplane now, and we have our first taste of the Autumn Mottle camo!  I'll rig the tail with Ez-Line or Uschi thread, then add the tail skid and other details.  Then, on to the wings.  I have two sets, so I will experiment with some embossing from the back for ribs, applying acrylic matte finish to distinguish them from the varnished fuselage, and using chalks for rib shading.  I want to break up the smooth finish and continuity of the mottle surface a bit, to give the wings some added texture and depth.  We'll see how it goes, but I'm looking forward to it.  Any tips from Gene or Dan, or anyone else?  Bueller?  Until next time,

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Kevin!  Your comment about paper modeling is so true.  I had never built a paper model until I saw Dan's original build threads on this forum (Avro Spider, Pfalz Dr.I), and decided to give it a go.  Once I did I was hooked! :D  Marco has graciously offered two beautiful Albatros Oeffag paper kits for download with no charge on his thread under this heading, so anyone can hop on the paper train!  Marco's recent build threads here are really inspirational, as are Dan's YouTube video tutorials.  It really is fun, with all of the ups and downs of plastic modeling, but far easier on the pocketbook.

sp, thanks for your kind comment as well.  The Berg is not the most beautiful of aircraft, but the Austrian schemes are really unique and attractive, and Marco's repaints are just gorgeous.  Hopefully, I can continue to get this one together well.  I shall give it my best.  This is just my second paper kit build, so I still have much to learn, but I am really enjoying it, even with the occasional missteps and frustrations.  Always nice to just print another parts sheet at Office Max for $1.50 when you foul something up beyond repair! ;)

Cheers,

Bob

This is my first attempt at embossing the ribs on a lower wing.  I used a small knitting needle.  I think i need a broader instrument, but it looks pretty good.  Maybe a bit wider for the indentations.

Hello Bob!

Looks great.  I like the embossing idea.  I ended up taking a 1/16th piece of piano wire and dremeled the tip to a nice shape for embossing.  I've also heard of people using an old ball point pen.  In any case, yours look nice.  :)

Excellent Work, it is most realistic and not overdone
@NinetythirdLiberator: I use some old and empty ballpoint pens (different tip size)
The trick is to mark the two ends of the line from the printed side of the paper, some millimeters out of the  border of the wing with a needle (punching through). then you score on the back of the paper foil using the holes as the ending points and a ruler to guide the pen

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions on embossing.  Definitely something to experiment with.

Here is the right lower wing in place:

I will touch up the leading edge.  Oh yeah, I knocked off three of the exhaust pipes while rigging the tail, so I'll need to re-attach those. ;)  Better to leave off those details until later.

I will try to match the rib embossing on the left lower wing, but maybe try something more pronounced for the upper wing.  Like I said, I've got an extra one to experiment with. ;D  In any event, the ribs tend to get lost in the busy Autumn mottle paint, but I'd like to have a bit more breakup of the wing surface in reflected light.  I'll run some tests! ::)

Cheers,

Bob

I like the rib embossing on this side better.  I did it with the same knitting needle, but on an old mouse pad rather than my bench mat, and it's more what I am looking for.  I'll do the same on the upper wing, which is up next after I add the machine gun barrels and hoods on the sides of the engine compartment near the front of the fuselage.  Time to start thinking about struts and landing gear as well. :D

Cheers,

Bob

I would say to Copper State Models that this one, in 1/32nd scale, is right up their alley.

I am thrilled with how you are making this model!

Plywood is very nice to reproduce and always creates nice effects with cardboard.

Looking at your post, I decided to design another model with the plywood fuselage, a KD 28/series.
I started to get familiar with the plane yesterday afternoon, but the drawing continued quickly.

The ribs are embossed on a mouse pad and may be slightly overdone, but I am happy with them.  I outlined the elevators with a fine point black roller pen, otherwise they were lost in the mottle.  I couldn't resist sitting the wing on the fuselage for a preview:

Thanks all!  I've added the gun blisters and muzzles (wire) to the fuselage:

Now the struts are done and I have her in sitting in the jig:

The original struts proved a tad too short (likely some mishap in prior construction), so I just copied the backup sheet on a color copier at 107% enlargement, and made another set--annoying, but I believe effective.  I will get to assembly soon, but even with the jig I always seem to have drama with struts and wings (the Parasol was a rare exception).  We'll see how this goes.  I just have to remember to take my time and get things lined up in the jig first.

Cheers,

Bob

I know it has been posted before and I saved it, but it was on the computer the cat killed and I no longer have it. Can you please tell me the name of the jig you use? The card model I'm currently working on is not getting both wings on straight without some sort of jig.

Thanks sp & Terri.  Sp, I will check on the brand of this jig, but there may be better ones out there.  I struggle with this one because I find it difficult to make fine adjustments because every pivot point is secured by a Phillips-head bolt and nut, meaning you need to insert a large screwdriver to make certain adjustments, which I find to be very limiting and bothersome, particularly with a model in harness (so to speak).  I will let you know as soon as I can check it, assuming it is marked.

Well, speaking of jigs and wings, I managed to get the top wing on without too much trouble, and the cabanes added as well.  I tried a different approach (for me) and it worked pretty well.  After drilling rigging points and adding von Buckle's eyelets and some of the EZ-Line rigging,  I glued the main struts to the underside of the top wing and used templates to get close to proper alignment.  After letting them dry overnight, I place the top wing on the jig supports and slowly lowered it into position with the strut wires close to the pre-drilled holes in the lower wings, then used tweezers to push them in, with a drop of CA following to secure them and a touch of craft glue to reinforce the joint.  After that dried, the cabanes were added with tweezers.  All of this seemed to work, and here she is, ready for the rigging to be completed before the landing gear is added:

Looks within tolerance to me, although the wing cutout in front of the cockpit could probably sit a bit higher.  Remember my original thought that the first set of struts was too short?  Well I was wrong and the longer struts I made were way off, so I went back to the originals.  They work pretty well actually, but some prior misstep likely leaves them just a tiny bit short.  Or maybe it's just my imagination.  I'm satisfied with it though, and like the overall look of the aeroplane.

Now, finish the rigging and then on to the wheels and langing gear assemblage.  I am going to try using the kits paper wheel inserts, but with rubber O-rings for the tires (you can see them on the bench in some of the photos).  We'll see how I make out with that.  I am not pressing my luck with the prop, and have already located a suitable plastic stand-in from the parts box.  Until next time,

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Gene, Rick & Dan for your kind comments.  Dan, I wasn't sure about the struts, but they look okay. I found an artist's marker at Hobby Lobby which is a good match for the silver gray, and it hides a multitude of sins!

The wings are now rigged with EZ-Line and von Buckle's eyelets for the main attachment points.  Nothing fancy, as I have trouble successfully mating turnbuckle tubes and elastic line (which lacks the rigidity to snake through a tiny brass tube like monofilament does).  I think the EZ-Line puts less stress on the light paper structures than more traditional rigging, and it looks pretty good although I miss the turnbuckles.

On to the undercarriage, parts of which are shown on the bench here:

I'm getting close on this one now, but have to get the prop painted and stained and details added, so it will probably be a few days depending on how much time I can spend at the bench.  This is a nice looking aeroplance and beautifully painted  by Marco, so I'm really looking forward to the finish.  Until then,

Cheers,

Bob

The rigging looks superb! No turnbuckles needed to look terrific, JMHO!

Thanks Rick!  I have gotten her up on her legs:

I think I got the forward struts attached a bit too far under the fuselage (they should be right at the juncture of the side and bottom), but I am not going to bother changing it as it will look fine as is.

I am now working on the wheels and prop.  For the wheels, I decided to borrow Dan's idea of rubber O-rings.  I have used the x-acto circle cutter to cut out the inside disc of the wheels from the kit parts after they were glued to 1/32 balsa.  With a little sanding they fit nicely inside the O-rings and were affixed with craft glue.  For the wheel covers I color copied the kit parts onto regular copy paper and then used the circle cutter again, then cut a small wedge out of the cover and added a small gluing strip behind one side.  I then pulled the sides of the cover together to provide the conical shape of the wheel sides.  This will fit right over the wheel core inside the rubber tires.  I have airbrushed the tires gray and am letting them dry before proceeding.  Here are the steps:

The outer covers (with the crosses) are already completed here, and obviously the tire/wheel assemblies have not yet been painted.

Gluing strip added.

Ready to form.

Only one more to do.

These should look pretty good once they are affixed to the wheels.  I'll have more on the wheels shortly, and the prop as well.  Almost there!

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Rick!

Here she is completed, except for the prop which is still drying from the oil stain.  Once that is dry and coated with clear orange and the boss painted, she will be complete.  Here are some shots from the bench.  I think the wheels turned out pretty well.  I am still amazed that this model is made of mostly paper except for some detail bits.  Marco's artistry in creating these beauties is true mastery!  I love the Autumn Mottle camo and natural wood fuselage. ;D

Here's the prop, ready to go under the drying cover.  It's a plastic cast off from the parts box that had the correct shape.  I painted it Tamiya Desert Yellow, then tried a technique that I have not used before--artists color pencils.  I chose a red brown shade and followed a photo of a Heine prop for the laminations.  I am satisfied so far, but we'll see how it looks when complete.  I'll get to the orange clear later this week, and I think I have some AH prop decals around somewhere, leftover from my Lloyd C.V build a few years ago.

Probably just one more update from here, then over to completed models soon.  It's been a fun journey, and thanks to all who shared it!

Cheers,

That is one delicious looking piece of eye candy.  You and Marco make a great team. The construction is worthy of the repaint and the repaint is worthy of the construction. Y'all have definitely inspired me to start cutting and folding paper. I must remember to order this kit.

I may have said this before but until I saw this build I had very little interest in AH types. The repaint and your construction of this kit has certainly changed My Mind!

Thanks sp, Rick and Dan, for your support!  Well, she's done after two months, and I am very pleased with the final result.  The final construction steps were for the plastic prop I added.  I found some LF Models 1/32 Austro-Hungarian producer's propeller label decals leftover from my Lloyd C.V scratchbuild from several years ago, and since the photo of this actual aircraft in the kit showed a Jaray prop, I used that one on my prop for the Berg.

Here are a couple of final shots from the bench with the prop installed.

This was an enjoyable build despite the missteps, and I further honed my paper building skills, and maybe learned something about patience and triple-checking before committing to glue.  This is a fantastic kit, and Marco's tremendous painting makes it a real beauty, producing a model comparable to good plastic kits.  His finishes are far better than I would likely achieve left to my own devices with a plastic kit.  I am very happy to have an Autumn Mottle Berg on my shelf!  Thanks to all who followed along and offered encouragement when I needed it.  Thanks to Marco for this beautiful repaint!

I'll post more shots over in Completed models.  Until next time,

Cheers,

Bob

Where can this particular repaint of the Berg be ordered. I found a different paint scheme somewhere, but I really would like to eventually do this version.

You did a first rate assembly of this kit. Having now worked some with paper card models, I can see little things here and there and have a better appreciation for your level of craftsmanship.

What is next up on your bench?

Thanks sp!  Much appreciated.  I bought this kit by online download through the ecardmodels web store of Matt77.  Marco is no longer selling there.  If you send him a pm through the forum he might very well be willing to send you a link to obtain this particular repaint kit via download.  Let me know how you make out.

Next up, I am going rogue with an off-topic plastic kit build of a P-38 Lightning from the Southwest Pacific Theater, specifically New Guinea, circa 1943.  After that, I just have to build one of CSM's beautiful Nie.17 kits, which I will likely couple in a dual build with a Roden 1/32 Nie.24bis.  After that, it's back to paper with a Fitter's Models 1/33 kit of an Albatros W.4 floatplane.  I've always wanted one of those, and the kit is in my download file.  At least that's my plan for now, until I get distracted by something else and change my mind next week. :o ;D

Good luck with the rest of your Short!  Looks great so far.  Keep going!

Best regards,

Bob

really an incredible model, especially now that the propeller is on and it is completed.
It is really realistic
congratulations!
