Title: 1/28 Spad XIII Decals
Post by: Cajun on March 23, 2015, 10:57:12 AM
Having acquired the re-release of the Spad XIII in 1/28.... It has Italian and some other markings for the decals....

Wass really hoping for Frank Luke or a French ace.

Anyone knows who makes aftermarket for this plane? Ive tried searching but came up with nothing

Terri is correct go here:  http://www.copperstatemodels.com/

Then the website is kind of hard to navigate but at the top there is a tab for products, then put in 1/28 scale and click on decals.  they have Frank Luke and Eddie Rickenbacker decals still available.

You can always keep an eye on evil-bay to see if anyone is letting go of some long OOP Americal-Gryphon decals. If memory serves, Dr. Merrill did some 1/28th sets.

Hey...while this subject is fresh in everyone's minds......RE: Eddie R'backer and Frank Luke.....I see that Copper State does markings for both pilots but where does one find a good source for what the camo. differences between these two planes would be?

I will rummage through my datafiles but just wondering if an answer I fresh in someone's brain out there.

Cheers from NYC, y'all,
Michael

PS Cajun, meh, where you be livin' at, cher?

Michael,
If memory serves me correctly, I believe the old FMP book on MOH winners has profiles. Other than that, we/you/etc. just need to determine which of their mounts was produced by which manufacturer to get the camo pattern, colors for roundels, etc.

OK, thanks, man......I've reconnected with and old HS buddy who has a few of the 1/28 SPAD kits and we've decided to do a über-mini-group (like 2 people) build. I know NADA about SPADs except that I have always liked the look of them and their connection with our countries history in WWI. So, I will start digging.

Thanks,
MS

PS.....since Neil and I both went to HS in the town that Reed Chambers lived in, I may see what I can find on his plane.

Cheers

Michael,
I don't have much on SPADS, but I have some. I'm eye-deep in Noop stuff right now, but let me know if there's anything you need pard.

Hi Michael,
Glad to hear you are doing a SPAD XIII especially in Reed Chambers markings.  knowing your artistic abilities I would recommend this one:

You can cut stencils for the many stars in the nose and tail and by the time you are done you will never have to worry about "which camouflage was used".  Do not forget though, the Revell SPAD XIII has the early rounded wingtips, in order to properly build any of the aircraft flown by Rickenbacker, Luke or Chambers you need to modify them to the squared off late style wingtips.

Hello, Dave,

Well, thank you for the endorsement, Dave! Much appreciated

I will need to have my build partner agree on which one we do, but, at some point, I will certainly do a SPAD in Chambers very Patriotic markings!

Thanks also for the tips re: the wing tips. As the build actually draws close to starting, I will do the proper do diligence and confirm all these necessary tweaks to the venerable old kit.

Cheers,
Michael

Is there a good 1/32 kit? Do we dare hope for one from WnW?

Neal and I are going to do this 1/28 build using kits and after mkt bits he and his dad purchased over the years. My dad was a huge WWI aero buff and I remember his collection of Leach prints, including the one of Frank Luke. So, for me, it is such an iconic airplane, and so identifiable with my childhood and our forces in WWI, I really hope to do a couple down the line......and in 1/32 to go with the rest of my growing collection.

Are you a Geaux Tigers or a Rajin' Cajun fan?

Yes Hobbycraft did a 1/32 scale SPAD XIII with the late style wings.  Not sure if it is currently available, but I built one a couple of years ago for a guy and it came out nice.  Here is a quick review to show you what it looks like out of the box.  http://www.modelingmadness.com/review/w1/tc/tmc13.htm

Hobbycraft's 1/32 Spad XIII 1687/88 is on par (i.e. GOOD!) with their "new-tooled" (1693/94) Camel. In addition. the Spad definitely has the late/squared wingtips,  and Kagero Famous Airplanes 8 Spad S.IX-S.XXIV includes 1/32 decals for Chambers' Stars & Stripes.  Both are currently (27 March 15) available : kit on ebay, Book from Tower Books.

Juanita Franzi's Profiles in the FMP MoH Winners book depict Luke's #26 as a Bleriot-built machine, and Rick's #1 as  Kellner-produced.

In addition, the 1/28 Revell wingtips are really "neither fish nor fowl": They are too rounded to be "Late, Squared" and too square & short to be "Early, Rounded." (See Windsock International 9 Vol 4 SPAD Special)

If you like French Spad XIII's , FFSMC Productions (available on ebay) do 1/28, 1/32, & 1/48 decal sheets for Spa 48's ("Crowing Cockerel") Jacques Roques, and Armand de Turenne. Nice touch is that the sheets include French roundels and rudder stripes for BOTH machines, so you won't have to choose between the two. Downside is that they were both Early, Rounded wingtips, but few casual observers would probably even notice.

Regards, Rob

Thanks for all this help, Rob...much appreciated.

As he already has the kits on hand, my pal Neal and I will be doing Luke's Stars and Stripes. Do I assume that the Winsock you reference has the corrections we will need?

Cheers

Yes, Windsock International Vol 9 No 4 July/August 1993 The article is "Revell's Classic Spad" on pp 28-29, which features 1/28 (says 1/27, though) templates for both upper/lower early and late wingtips, PLUS "ply-pocket extensions" for the early wings.
Bon chance, Cher!

Hey all, (Irish fan Cajun included....don't get me started about last season, cher.)

OK...here's the $64,000 question? Does anyone do 1/28 decals for Chamber's Stars and Stripes?? The stripes look like pretty straight forward masking but the stars, hmmmmm....yes, we can do stencils, but I believe decals would snuggle down a lot easier on all the nooks and crannies of the cowling.

Cheers, y'all,
Michael

None that I know of, but if you get the Rickenbacker decals that will give you your insignia and 94th hat in the ring decals, then I think you will have to get a bunch of generic white star decals, something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/decals-US-ARMY-STAR-for-different-scales-model-kits-white-31-/181402141585?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a3c690391

and apply the correct size (or close enough hopefully) over your blue painted nose and tail.  The only ones that I have seen for Chambers striped aircraft are the 1/48 scale DML/Dragon kit markings and a 1/72 scale set from Starfighter Decals http://www.internetmodeler.com/scalemodels/nraviation/Starfighter-Decals-1-72-SPAD-XIII-A-E-F-Showbirds-Part-1.php

There are also good profiles of his plane in Windsock International Vol 18 No. 1, a great article on SPAD markings and a review of the 1/32 scale Hobbycraft SPAD.

OK, Dave....as always, thanks for all the info. Very helpful indeed.

We are just getting started so there is plenty of time to sort the finishing details out.

Cheers from NYC,
Michael

PS I'd forgotten all about that DML kit with Chamber's mount as the box art.....brings back some good memories.
