Title: Kondor D.2; 1/48 SPIN model; Update: Outdoor pictures
Post by: Bughunter on August 06, 2021, 07:56:55 AM
Kondor D.2

The "Kondor Flugzeugwerke GmbH" was founded in the Germna city Essen 1912.
My wife was born there, and my mother in law lives there. So I had to build a Kondor aircraft!
Today I finished that little biplane after working on it for one month.

I was build from a Spin model kit in 1/48 with a lot of scratch work in wood and aluminium, a Small Stuff rotary engine, Gaspatch turnbuckles and Aviattic decals.

Which is the original, which the fake?

This little biplane is smaller as a Fokker Dr.I Here a Dr.I fuselage, but the cowling and tail would add additional length.

Beautiful result with loads of scratch built additions in double quick time too.  That's another masterpiece completed with a really fun build thread.
Frank you are a bit of a genius! 👏 .

I really love this little bird Frank! All the detailing and added scratched parts are very beautifully done. Comparing the two b/w pictures, only the missing background in the second picture gives away that that's the model.

Extremely well done!

Willem

An extremely attractive little model, Frank, beautifully executed. I love the vibrant colour scheme.

She looks great, Frank.  Nice detailing, and the eyelets for the strut cross-bracing works well.  I really like the look of the upper eyelets (more visible in the construction thread).

A short stubby little fighter!

Lovely Bird, Frank! I wonder what it was like to fly this one?

Another masterpiece from the master modeller. The scratch built additions take your models from the excellent to the beyond words category. Very colourful and interesting because it is so poorly known. The build thread was, as always, extremely informative - thank you for that.

Oh and I nearly forgot: the top photograph is of the model and the lower b & w is the real aeroplane..... I think!

Stephen.

Thank you my friends!

Beautiful result with loads of scratch built additions in double quick time too.
Oh yes, this was a speed build! Not a big amount of parts, and all is very small - this saves a lot of time.

I really love this little bird Frank!
Thank you Willem, me too! As often I like the newest bird in the cabinet ???

I love the vibrant colour scheme.
Thank you Sandy! I intended the fuselage even darker, but I wanted also to keep a very light wood grain. It is difficult to tell from the b/w pictures what the colour was really like.

Nice detailing, and the eyelets for the strut cross-bracing works well.  I really like the look of the upper eyelets (more visible in the construction thread).
Thank you Ken! I always try to improve and try something new, so this was the case with the struts. Often the rigging is mounted to the wing, e.g. my recently built Halberstadt but I here I tried to replicate the strut eyelets. By the way, the way to add the strut fittings was also new  :)
Also special thanks for the hint regarding the cowling. As very last step I polished it wet yesterday, but it was more shiny than the fuselage. So I made another attempt with coarser sandpaper, now I like the outcome.

Lovely Bird, Frank! I wonder what it was like to fly this one?
Thank you Kevin! It take part in the second D-type competition at Aldershof in June 1918. The flight characteristics of the aircraft were praised, but the poor performance criticised = not ordered into production.

Another resin kit under your belt !

Fantastic results Frank on this one  :)
Thank you Alexis, but I still try to improve and get better with every project. But I guess there will be never a perfect model. Her I had some trouble with CA during mount process.
And I have more Kondor types in my stash, again resin. I selected the D.2 due to the rotary available by Small Stuff.

the hand print did blend in well after all  8)

Oh yes Rick, now we both can live with it! Thx!

Very colourful and interesting because it is so poorly known.
Stephen, you like the seldom seen types, I know. I'm glad you enjoyed the build report.
Regarding the masterpiece - I think that the Halberstadt is somehow more a masterpiece, may be due to the effort. But yes, it is a nice model.

Cheers,
Frank

Oh, some more friends discovered this thread - thank you Marc, Guy and Manni!
I have more Kondor aircraft types in my stash, but the used engines are not available (yet), so I need to wait or use the kit provided engines.

Cheers,
Frank

I’ve only tackled and finished two Spin kits and they certainly aren’t the easiest builds. Yours turned out beautifully done.  One thing is certain we aren’t buying their kits for the artwork on the boxes.

Thank you Dave and Charlie for your very nice comments!

I’ve only tackled and finished two Spin kits and they certainly aren’t the easiest builds.
This was only my second complete resin build at all, beside some conversation kits - all from Spin so far. But more to come, also from other companies, e.g. Planet Models or Karaya.

One thing is certain we aren’t buying their kits for the artwork on the boxes.
Oh yes, but this effects only collectors :D Once build, I don't care about the box - the content is more important.

Cheers,
Frank

I would have liked to have had a few more clouds, but you have to be satisfied if it's dry this August :-\

It looks even better in the outdoor photos Frank. Are you sure you didn't photograph a real replica at an aerodrome?  ;)

You can have as many clouds as you wish here Frank - a bit of blue sky would not go amiss here!

The outdoor photos are stunning - as Richie has commented, they could be mistaken for a modern full-scale replica on an aerodrome.

Stephen.

I'm glad that you like the pics!

Mission accomplished! That is the impression I wanted to achieve.
With the Triplane and Dolphin I tried this on the balcony and the result was not that bad but the trees looks much to big since I'm very limited in angles (to avoid modern structures on a biplane picture). That was the reason for the new setup.

A completely new dimension of presenting your great models, keep on taking new photos.
More just posted ;)

Oh yes Stephen, such pictures would not be possible now due to heavy rain the last days. It would wash the decals from the models ???

Cheers,
Frank
