Title: 3 Hanriot HD1 78ma Squadriglia 1/144
Post by: andonio64 on January 18, 2018, 02:01:30 AM
Hallo,
here is a new work of mine, on the other forum I am in they have organized a WW1 group build starting on new year's day... but I had already started my Breguet XIV so to take part in that GB I had to start a new job.

Without stopping the BrXIV I decided to handle this kit:

As probably many of you already know, it's a double 1/144 combo.

3 out of the 4 options proposed by the decals are Italian and one is Belgian (ça va sans dire!).
I decided to tribute an hommage to the 78th Squadriglia, and in particular to Mario Fucini, one of the many aces flying for that squad on the Hanriots.
I have bought some weeks ago his wartime diary:
"Voli sul nemico" = "Flying above the enemy"
THis edition dates back to the fifties but the original book was issued in 1932.
Fucini flew also in WW2 and ended up in the 1950's his military career as Air force Brigadier-General.

The plane depicted here is the last one he flew, there are at least other two different (earlier) versions of his plane with different identification markings.

About the second plane I think I will make the other 78th squadriglia machine suggested by the kit: Sgt. Guido Nardini (not Quido as written on the box back)

Here are the sprues:
I those small plastic bags are the engine and its cowling!

Decals and PE frets...

Instructions

My usual information sources...

I see two major problems on which I ask your educated advice:
- the struts are all provided as PE parts. The problem is not being too thin but too weak. Should I make them from thin plasticard? I am afraid to set them in tension when rigging the wings...
- Yeah, rigging here needs a genial idea, I need Ondra's advice here!!!!

Fucini's Hanriot  was a Macchi built, so it was classic CDL and had the fuselage and the upper surfaces painted in a darker shade of beige.
The cockades were the normal ones, with the outside circle in green.

The camouflage of this plane was overpainted on the factory dark beige and, according to the big book by the Historic office of the Italian AF, was not exactly as depicted on the box, it should have two colours roughly painted. A reddish brown and a dark green.
Something like this:

The paint was thicker and darker on the fuselage sides and on the upper side of the top wing and less thick on the upper side of the bottom wing

This is a publicly available photo from which the historical office of the IAF deduced the colors, plus a couple of other photos in the book not available publicly on the net.

Number 78 could be black or red, in this case it seems red was the best hypothesis for visibility reasons
In another photo it appears with a white border

The big white pennant painted on the two sides had 12 black skulls representing the victories he claimed (he was officially awarded 7 kills).

My idea is to paint it like this version (http://www.kangaspuut.net/muut/hanriot_eduard2.html).

The Hanriot flown by Nardini was French built and the canvas was aluminium doped, the cockades were repainted from the French (the blue inner circle was repainted green).

Thanks for watching an I am looking forward to getting some suggestion!!!

Hi Antonio,

great to see you starting with this dual build.

Got your back with whatever assistance or advice you need. ;)

As for the struts, I would consider using a combination of brass rod and evergreen profile glued together with CA and then sanded to shape - I used this on my S.E.5a and it worked well.

As for rigging - I would recommend a test assembly of all parts using masking fluid to hold the parts in place. Once you are sure the fit is correct, glue the lower wings and all struts in place and then rig the whole construction - you wil be gluing the monofilament to the top of the struts with extra thin CA. Once rigged, the top wing goes in place.

For this purpose I use elastic monofilament by Uschi van der Rosten glued with CA to a piece of thin copper wire:

You glue the copper wire in pre-drilled holes in the lower wing (simulates turnbuckles at the same time) and once the CA has cured, you simply stretch the monofilament to the top of the strut on the other side and glue. Easy peasy. ;)

Cheers

Ondra

Hallo everybody,
here is the state of the art on the microHD project:
Here are the pieces painted while still on the sprues, too small to be held in the fingers!!!

Engines and cowlings (you can see some electrons escaping their orbits if you look at the photo very carefully...

I tried to enrich a bit the pilot place, skids on the floor and control stick were not supplied by the kit.
The lumps of glue at the bottom of the sticks cannot be seen after the fuselages are closed. I used 0,5 mm diameter plasticard, a smaller size (I have 0,3) would have been nearly invisible.

Instrument panels and firewalls (not supplied by the kit)

everything at its place

At the end of the evening session I closed the two fuselages, now they need some sanding and putty...

I'm getting blind!!!!

A promising build and a very good start. And I'm very interested in Fucini's plane as I have a long time begun HD1 in my shyness cabinet waiting to be completed in the same mistery livery.

Thank you guys...
This WIP is useful to explain the meaning of field depth in photography to novices!

@giuseppe: the livery I chose for Fucini is not fully documented, but it's an interpretation of the photos by the big book on Italian Aces of WW1 which is historically very accurate and describes something very close to that model by Mikko, the finnish guy I posted the link above.

A few weeks ago I asked Václav Lomitzki of Valom to purchase a second decals sheet, to have more 78 markings, and he was so kind to send me for free 2 sheets (including 2 PE frets) and one more sprue tree...
So probably I'll add a third 1/144 HD1 from the same squadron but I'm not sure which one...

All my friends, we need to be careful here! We seems to have a virus in this forum, since now a second one starts to build biplanes in a 3-digit scale! :o
Some month ago I simply would not believe the existing of such biplanes as kits.

Andonio, I wish you a sharp eye, a steady hand and the ability to breath like an apnoe diver! And good luck  ;)

Post by: andonio64 on February 05, 2018, 06:58:35 PM
Hallo friends, as I already wrote in one of my previous posts I have added a third 78th squadriglia HD1 to my project here, it's Antonio Chiri's mount, it was in silver with the black tail.

The extra plane I got as a present from Václav Lomitzki of Valom had the engine cowling fragmented in 4 pieces so I took some time to restore it, then it came out well enough and so I decided to go with tht third plane.

Sorry for being so late, but I'm having very little time to model at the moment, so far I have closed the three fuselages, glued cowlings and motors and that sub assembly fixed on the fuselages. I also painted the bottom and top wings of the three. Photos ASAP!

Just to complete the set here is the only image I was able to find online of the plane flown by Guido "Giulio Cesare" Nardini on a minisite dedicated to his memory (http://guidonardini.it/index.html).

It show the red pennant and a black devil nose-thumbing towards the tail making a mockery of the enemy.
The black devil was painted over the cockade that should have the red circle outside.

The same type of cockade should have been the one painted on Antonio Chiri's plane, as the silver doped planes were typically coming from France (and not in Italy on Macchi-licence build) and they overpainted only the blue central circle in green.

Ciao

Hallo friends, here are some pictures illustrating the state of the work on this build...

Here are the three little brothers as they were friday evening, the one on the right shows the cowling that arrived fragmented in 4 pieces, I was able to restore it but it was very brittle and was not able to reshape the inner border, so you see the lower right border straight and not curved.
THe other cowlings had similar problems but I was able to shape them with the mini drill at a low nuber of RPM.

Yesterday evening I finally found some time to dedicate to the micro-HDs...

I made from scratch the cabane struts from zinc wire 0.44 mm diam (they were flat photoetched and they were conceived as a unique W shape, while the external struts (not yet in place at this stage) were not in continuity with the central cabane shaped as a reverse V .

I also decided to build from scratch the MGs, those provided by the kit are not satisfying, they look like a hunting rifle with the stock tilted downwards.

HD1 of Mario Renato Fucini:
I used the decals from the box. On this plane Fucini had two MGs outside the reverse V struts.

HD1 of Guido Nardini
(http://www.andonio.it/model/hdfucini/hdfucini032.jpg)
I used the decals from the box. One MG on the left side.
Here the cabane struts are not perfectly aligned, I'll see if it will be the case to replace one when glueing the topo wing...

HD1 of Antonio Chiri
(http://www.andonio.it/model/hdfucini/hdfucini033.jpg)
Decals were self printed, Chiri had one central MG

Thanks for watching !

I think that you made three Hanriots before but in the true scale. Is this a trick to try to get the rest of us to drop down a scale - so that WNW kits will become 1/48 etc?

Simply wonderful Andonio - just how you manage these tiny models and yet keep them looking so good is quite beyond what I can think about.

Stephen.

Hi Stephen,
thanks for your appreciation, yes I made three HDs in 1/48 and working on these microbes is indeed difficult to me, I have not the hand and precision level Ondra reaches on the same scale.
I know you were ironic, but of course I don't want to get anyone modifying the scale preferences!
I love this forum because there are so many different minds with different ideas!

Ha ha, I don't wish WNW kits to become 1/48, I wish they keep doing their fantastic 1/32 kits at those highest quality levels. 1/32 is not a scale I feel very close to, I know I have many limits in my modeling skills and such big planes would magnify them, but I am sincerely admired by WNW kits and the fantastic modeling many of our forumites achieve. For 1/48 that is my preferred scale there is a good choice of high level kits by many great producers such as CSM, Eduard itself and even SH and I hope they keep kits coming.

What I have understood so far during this build started in parallel with the work on the Breguet XIV is that I can't bring 2 different work together because while I make one I think to the other and this is no good for both!
So I decided to take the three microbes to the end and then take back on the Breguet.

Hallo, here are some news on the three micro-amigos of the 78th Squadriglia.

I glued the top wing on the center cabane struts (on all the three planes) then, after many trials and errors, I succeeded in putting in place the outer cabane struts of the Nardini plane.
Then I made from scratch the wing struts and put them between Nardini's wings:

Here are the top wing in place with decals on for the other two amigos:

Chiri

Fucini

I am not sure I will rig these microbes, for sure I won't follow the clever solution Ondra suggested me at the beginning, It would have meant to have the cables hanging from the top and bottom wings while trying to put them into position and inserting the struts, this scared me because of the small dimensions of the spaces to handle.

But never say never, let's see after completing cabane and wing struts for the other two planes and then I'll take a decision!

Wheee this was a very tiresome step ahead, but all in all I'm happy with the result.

Ciao and thanks for watching!

Antonio

Dear Lance  and Gregory, thanks for the kind words, indeed the result is satisfying to me seen the difficulties I encountered in this walk out of my comfort zone!

As I said I will take the three microplanes to the finish line as fast as possible, but I am not so pleased by this build, the difficulties were far above the fun and enjoyment, that's why I decided not to rig or maybe rig them in a simple way I have not yet in my mind...

Yes my comfort zone is 1/48, then I would say even 1/72 is a "borderline" experience...

OK thanks again and stay tuned!

Good job, Antonio!

I understand the decision not to rig them, as this is a very challenging task in this scale in case of a kit - I had to develop a special method for my scratchbuilds to be able to rig them and it basically requires building the plane twice.

Hallo friends,
I worked a few hours during the weekend and I managed to finish my second Hanriot trio, dedicated to the 78th Squadriglia, I decided not to rig them because my thick fingers were too clumsy to manage the wires around the struts and the risk was to break things, so here they are, I know they're imperfect but I think all in all the overall effect is not that bad!

Should WNW ever produce a 1/32 HD1 I would indeed buy the kit!

Here they are on the ground:

Thanks Rick, I will borrow the giant hand Ondra uses in his builds to show how small they are!!!

;-)  (just joking, of course)

Thank you Giuseppe!
In Italy today is your "name-day" i.e. when St. Joseph is celebrated!
Greetings!

Amazing builds Andonio. Never mind the lack of rigging - the colour schems alone are something to be proud of. I for one would baulk at building these in this scale - my hat off to you for trying and being so successful.

Stephen.
